A full-field speckle pattern image correlation method is presented that will determine directly the complete, two-dimensional deformation field during the image correlation process on digital images obtained using computer vision systems. In this work, a B-Spline function is used to represent the object deformation field throughout the entire image area. This is an improvement over subset-based image correlation methods by implicitly maintaining position and derivative continuity constraints among subsets up to a specified order. The control point variables within the B-Spline deformation function are optimized iteratively with the Levenberg-Marquardt method to achieve minimum disparity between the predicted and actual deformed images. Results have shown that the proposed method is computationally efficient, accurate and robust. The general framework of this method can be applied ton-dimensional image correlation systems that solve for multi-dimension vector fields.  相似文献

Recent Progress in Digital Image Correlation   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In this paper, we report the following important progress recently made in the basic theory and practical implementation of digital image correlation (DIC) for deformation measurement. First, we answer a basic but confusing question to the users of DIC: what is a good speckle pattern for DIC? We present a simple, easy-to-compute yet effective global parameter, called mean intensity gradient, for quality assessment of the entire speckle pattern. Second, we provide an overview of various correlation criteria used in DIC for evaluating the similarity of the reference and deformed subsets, and demonstrate the equivalence of three robust and most widely used correlation criteria, i.e., a zero-mean normalized cross-correlation (ZNCC) criterion, a zero-mean normalized sum of squared difference (ZNSSD) criterion and a parametric zero-mean normalized sum of squared difference (PSSDab) criterion with two additional unknown parameters, which elegantly unifies these correlation criteria for subset-based pattern matching. Third, we describe an iterative least squares (ILS) algorithm for accurate subpixel motion detection, which is proved to be equivalent to the existing Newton–Raphson algorithm, but the principle and implementation of ILS algorithm is more straightforward and easier. Finally, to overcome the two limitations of existing subset-based DIC technique, we introduce a robust and generally applicable reliability-guided DIC technique, in which the calculation path is guided by the ZNCC coefficients of computed points, to determine the genuine full-field deformation of an object with complex shape.  相似文献

A methodology based on inverse modelling for estimating viscoplastic material parameters at high strain-rate conditions is presented. The methodology is demonstrated for a mild steel exposed for compression loading in a split Hopkinson pressure bar arrangement. By using dog-bone shaped specimens nonhomogeneous states of deformation are obtained throughout the entire deformation process. The resulting nonhomogeneous deformation of the specimens is evaluated using digital speckle photography (DSP) to give in-plane point-wise displacement and strain fields. The photographs are captured with a high-speed camera of image converter type, which acquire time resolved images during the impact loading. The experiments are simulated using finite element analysis (FEA), where the material model suggested by Johnson–Cook for high-strain rate conditions are utilised. Experimental and FE-calculated field information are compared in order to estimate the viscoplastic parameter in the Johnson–Cook material model. The estimation is performed by minimising least-square functions that contain the differences in displacements and strains, respectively. The quality of the estimated parameters is studied from statistical point of view.  相似文献

Background

Images from scanning electron microscopes, transmission electron microscopes and atomic force microscopes have been widely used in digital image correlation methods to obtain accurate full-field deformation profiles of tested objects and investigate the object’s deformation mechanism. However, because of the raster-scanning imaging mode used in microscopic observation equipment, the images obtained from these instruments can only be used for quasi-static displacement measurements; otherwise, spurious displacements and strains may be introduced into the deformation results if these scanning microscopic images are used directly in general digital image correlation calculations for moving and temporally deformed surfaces.

Objective

Realizing kinematic parameter and dynamic deformation measurements on a scanning electron microscope platform.

Methods

Establishing a scanning imaging model of moving and temporally deformed objects that contains motion and deformation equations, a scanning equation and an intensity invariance assumption for small deformations. Then proposing a scanning-digital image correlation (S-DIC) method based on combing the characteristics of the scanning imaging mode with digital image correlation.

Results

Quantitatively investigating the effects of the spurious displacements and strains introduced when using scanning images to represent moving and temporally deformed surfaces in the measurement results. Numerical simulations verify that the accuracy of the S-DIC method is 10?2pix for the displacement, 10?4 for the strain, 10?4pix/s for the velocity and 10?6s?1 for the strain rate. Experiments also show that the proposed S-DIC method is effective. Conclusions: The results of this work demonstrate the utility of S-DIC on the field of microscopic dynamic measurement.

In practice, out-of-plane motions usually are not avoidable during experiments. Since 2D–DIC measurements are vulnerable to parasitic deformations due to out-of-plane specimen motions, three-dimensional digital image correlation (StereoDIC or 3D–DIC) oftentimes is employed. The StereoDIC method is known to be capable of accurate deformation measurements for specimens subjected to general three-dimensional motions, including out-of-plane rotations and displacements. As a result, there has been limited study of the deformation measurements obtained when using StereoDIC to measure the displacement and strain fields for a specimen subjected only to out-of-plane rotation. To assess the accuracy of strain measurements obtained using stereovision systems and StereoDIC when a specimen undergoes appreciable out of plane rotation, rigid body out-of-plane rotation experiments are performed in the range ?400?≤?θ?≤?400 using a two-camera stereovision system. Results indicate that (a) for what would normally be considered “small angle” calibration processes, the measured normal strain in the foreshortened specimen direction due to specimen rotation increases in a non-linear manner with rotation angle, with measurement errors exceeding ±1400με and (b) for what would normally be considered “large angle” calibration processes, the magnitude of the errors in the strain are reduced to ±300με. To theoretically assess the effect of calibration parameters on the measurements, two separate analyses are performed. First, theoretical strains due to out-of-plane rigid body rotation are determined using a pinhole camera model to project a series of three-dimensional object points into the image plane using large angle calibration parameters and then re-project the corresponding sensor plane coordinates back into the plane using small angle calibration parameters. Secondly, the entire imaging process is also simulated in order to remove experimental error sources and to further validate the theory. Results from both approaches confirmed the same strain error trends as the experimental strain measurements, providing confidence that the source of the errors is the calibration process. Finally, variance based sensitivity analyses show that inaccuracy in the calibrated stereo angle parameter is the most significant factor affecting the accuracy of the measured strain.  相似文献

In this series of papers, we examine the propagation of waves of finite deformation in rubbers through experiments and analysis; in the present paper, Part I, attention is focused on the propagation of one-dimensional waves in strips of natural, latex and synthetic, nitrile rubber. Tensile wave propagation experiments were conducted at high strain rates by holding one end fixed and displacing the other end at a constant velocity. A high-speed video camera was used to monitor the motion and to determine the evolution of strain and particle velocity in rubber strips. Analysis of the response through the theory of finite waves indicated a need for an appropriate constitutive model for rubber; by quantitative matching between the experimental observations and analytical predictions, an appropriate instantaneous elastic response for the rubbers was obtained. This matching process suggested that a simple power-law constitutive model was capable of representing the high strain-rate response for both rubbers used.  相似文献

The 3D image correlation technique is used for full field measurement of strain (and strain rate) in compression and tensile split Hopkinson bar experiments using commercial image correlation software and two digital high-speed cameras that provide a synchronized stereo view of the specimen. Using an array of 128 × 80 (compression tests) and 258 × 48 (tensile tests) pixels, the cameras record about 110,000 frames per second. A random dot pattern is applied to the surface of the specimens. The image correlation algorithm uses the dot pattern to define a field of overlapping virtual gage boxes, and the 3-D coordinates of the center of each gage box are determined at each frame. The coordinates are then used for calculating the strains throughout the surface of the specimen. The strains determined with the image correlation method are compared with those determined from analyzing the elastic waves in the bars, and with strains measured with strain gages placed on the specimens. The system is used to study the response of OFE C10100 copper. In compression tests, the image correlation shows a nearly uniform deformation which agrees with the average strain that is determined from the waves in the bars and the strains measured with strain gages that are placed directly on the specimen. In tensile tests, the specimen geometry and properties affect the outcome from the experiment. The full field strain measurement provides means for examining the validity and accuracy of the tests. In tests where the deforming section of the specimen is well defined and the deformation is uniform, the strains measured with the image correlation technique agree with the average strain that is determined from the split Hopkinson bar wave records. If significant deformation is taking place outside the gage section, and when necking develops, the strains determined from the waves are not valid, but the image correlation method provides the accurate full field strain history.  相似文献

Study of a Crack at a Fastener Hole by Digital Image Correlation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this work the efficacy of using digital image correlation to determine stress intensity factors for a crack emanating from a fastener hole has been investigated. To this end a fatigue crack was grown in pure mode I from a 50 mm diameter hole in an Al 7010 alloy plate test-piece. This crack was then loaded elastically under several combinations of mixed mode (I + II) displacements. In each case, images of the sample surface before and after the deformation were recorded using a high resolution digital camera. The surface preparation consisted only of scratching the surface lightly with silicon carbide abrasive paper. The crack location and resulting displacements were then calculated using digital image correlation. The analytical displacement fields for a traction free crack under arbitrary loading conditions based on the Muskhelishvili’s complex function approach were fitted to the experimentally measured displacement fields and the mixed mode stress intensity factor was determined in each case. Good agreement with the nominal applied values was obtained. The uncertainty of the crack tip position has a major influence on the accuracy of the stress intensity factors and so the Sobel edge finding filter was successfully applied to experimental displacement fields to establish precisely the crack tip location. High-efficiency and high-accuracy deformation analysis using digital image correlation (DIC) has become increasingly important in recent years, considering the ongoing trend of using higher resolution digital cameras and common requirement of processing a large sequence of images recorded in a dynamic testing. In this work, to eliminate the redundant computations involved in conventional DIC method using forward additive matching strategy and classic Newton–Raphson (FA-NR) algorithm without sacrificing its sub-pixel registration accuracy, we proposed an equivalent but more efficient DIC method by combining inverse compositional matching strategy and Gauss-Newton (IC-GN) algorithm for fast, robust and accurate full-field displacement measurement. To this purpose, first, an efficient IC-GN algorithm, without the need of re-evaluating and inverting Hessian matrix in each iteration, is introduced to optimize the robust zero-mean normalized sum of squared difference (ZNSSD) criterion to determine the desired deformation parameters of each interrogated subset. Then, an improved reliability-guided displacement tracking strategy is employed to achieve further speed advantage by automatically providing accurate and complete initial guess of deformation for the IC-GN algorithm implemented on each calculation point. Finally, an easy-to-implement interpolation coefficient look-up table approach is employed to avoid the repeated calculation of bicubic interpolation at sub-pixel locations. With the above improvements, redundant calculations involved in various procedures (i.e. initial guess of deformation, sub-pixel displacement registration and sub-pixel intensity interpolation) of conventional DIC method are entirely eliminated. The registration accuracy and computational efficiency of the proposed DIC method are carefully tested using numerical experiments and real experimental images. Experimental results verify that the proposed DIC method using IC-GN algorithm and the existing DIC method using classic FA-NR algorithm generate similar results, but the former is about three to five times faster. The proposed reliability-guided IC-GN algorithm is expected to be a new standard full-field displacement tracking algorithm in DIC.  相似文献

A new technique for characterizing end-supported microbeams of coating materials is presented. Microbeams are fabricated using micro-EDM machining to isolate the material under investigation from the underlying substrate. Three- and four-point bending is realized by a custom-built microspecimen testing system, and digital image correlation is employed to capture full-field strains and displacements in theses microbeams. These experiments provide the foundation for the use of finite element modeling and inverse methods to determine the mechanical properties (elastic moduli, strength, interfacial toughness) of the coatings. Here, the experimental details of the microbeam bending experiments are explained, discussed and illustrated through application to a multilayered metal/oxide/ceramic thermal barrier coating system commonly used in aero-turbines.  相似文献

Refractory castables exhibit very low fracture strain levels when subjected to tension or bending. The main objective of this work is to show that 3-D digital image correlation (3-D DIC) allows such low strain levels to be measured. Compared to mechanical extensometer measurements, 3-D DIC makes it possible to reach similar strain resolution levels and to avoid the problem of position dependance related to the heterogeneous nature of the strain and to strain localization phenomena. First, the 3-D DIC method and the experimental set-up are presented. Secondly, an analysis of the 3-D DIC method is performed in order to evaluate the resolution, the standard uncertainty and the spatial resolution for both displacement and strain measurements. An optimized compromise between strain spatial resolution and standard uncertainty is reached for the configuration of the experimental bending test. Finally, the macroscopic mechanical behavior of a fiber reinforced refractory castable (FRRC) is studied using mechanical extensometry and 3-D DIC in the case of tensile and four-point bending tests. It is shown that similar results are obtained with both methods. Furthermore, in the case of bending tests on damaged castable, 3-D DIC results demonstrate the ability to determine Young’s modulus from heterogeneous strain fields better than by using classical beam deflection measurements.  相似文献

Using the basic equations for stereo-vision with established procedures for camera calibration, the error propagation equations for determining both bias and variability in a general 3D position are provided. The results use recent theoretical developments that quantified the bias and variance in image plane positions introduced during image plane correspondence identification for a common 3D point (e.g., pattern matching during measurement process) as a basis for preliminary application of the developments for estimation of 3D position bias and variability. Extensive numerical simulations and theoretical analyses have been performed for selected stereo system configurations amenable to closed-form solution. Results clearly demonstrate that the general formulae provide a robust framework for quantifying the effect of various stereo-vision parameters and image-plane matching procedures on both the bias and variance in an estimated 3D object position.  相似文献

A simple method for measuring surface strains around cracks   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A simple system has been developed to measure surface strains that occur during in situ deformation of mechanical test specimens. The system uses photolithographically deposited displacement markers and computer image recognition routines to determine in-plane displacements and strains from digital images. The strain calculating routines are integrated into a simple mouse-driven software package that facilitates the transformation from digital images to useful strain field information. Additional routines have been developed to determine crack tip stress fields and J integrals. Crack tip stress intensities have been calculated from strain maps obtained for traction-free cracks in stainless steel. The J integrals were found to be independent of contour and consistent with applied stress intensities. Crack tip stress intensities were calculated for bridged cracks in lamellar TiAl. The toughening effect of the bridging zones was determined by including the bridged region in the contours. Resistance curves generated from strain maps were consistent with those measured during mechanical testing.  相似文献

Being the two primary approaches for full-field kinematics measurements, both subset-based local digital image correlation(DIC) and finite element-based global DIC have been extensively studied.Nowadays, most commercial DIC systems employ local DIC algorithm because of its advantages of straight forward principle and higher efficiency. However, several researchers argue that global DIC can provide better displacement results due to the displacement continuity constraint among adjacent elements. As such, thoroughly examining the performance of these two different DIC methods seems to be highly necessary. Here, the random errors associated with local DIC and two global DIC methods are theoretically analyzed at first.Subsequently, based on the same algorithmic details and parameters during analyses of numerical and real experiments, the performance of the different DIC approaches is fairly compared.Theoretical and experimental results reveal that local DIC outperforms its global counterpart in terms of both displacement results and computational efficiency when element(subset) size is no less than 11 pixels.  相似文献

Full-field surface 3D shape and displacement measurements using a single commercial unfocused plenoptic camera (Lytro Illum) are reported in this work. Before measurements, the unfocused plenoptic camera is calibrated with two consecutive steps, including lateral calibration and depth calibration. Each raw image of a checkerboard pattern recorded by Lytro Illum is first extracted to an array of sub-aperture images (SAIs), and the center sub-aperture images (CSAIs) at diverse poses are used for lateral calibration to determine intrinsic and extrinsic parameters. The parallax maps between the CSAI and the remaining SAIs at each pose are then determined for depth parameters estimation using depth calibration. Furthermore, a newly developed physical-based depth distortion model is established to correct the serious distortion of the depth field. To realize shape and deformation measurements, the raw images of a test sample with speckle patterns premade on its surface are captured by Lytro Illum and extracted to arrays of SAIs. The parallax maps between the CSAI and the target SAIs are obtained using subset-based digital image correlation. Based on the pre-computed intrinsic and depth parameters and the disparity map, the full-field surface 3D shape and displacement of a test object are finally determined. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed approach are evaluated by a set of experiments involving the shape reconstruction of a cylinder, in-plane and out-of-plane displacement measurements of a flat plate and 3D full-field displacement measurements of a cantilever beam. The preliminary results indicate that the proposed method is expected to become a novel approach for full-field surface 3D shape and displacement measurements.  相似文献

In Part I of this two part paper, we developed analytical expressions for the crack face displacements due to an applied point traction as well as a moving point source of dilatation. In this sequel to Part I, we present numerical results for the crack face displacements in the form of displacement-time records at fixed locations on the crack face. For the stationary point traction problem, the results are more or less in keeping with the predictions made in Part I, with the Rayleigh pulse giving a large contribution for an applied step load.In the case of the moving point microfracture with a step time dependence, in addition to the diffracted compressional, shear and Rayleigh arrivals there is observed the evolution of a new pulse whose amplitude and position on the time record shifts changes if the calculations are done for a different crack speed. Results are also presented for a microfracture with an oscillatory time dependence. Once again, the first arrival of the surface pulse appears to be the most prominent arrival on the record. Further explorations of the parameters and source functions would be required before comparisons with experimental data can be made.  相似文献

Digital image correlation (DIC) is a full field three dimensional measurement technique that can quantify displacements and strains of a surface. In this paper, digital image correlation is used as a slip measurement technique during coupon scale fretting fatigue experiments. Slip measured with the novel DIC technique is compared to conventional slip measurement techniques as clip gauges and modified clip gauge measurements proposed by Wittkowsky et al. Slip measurements with the DIC system show lower slip values and higher tangential contact stiffness’s compared to (modified) clip gauge measurements. Slip measured with DIC is obtained closer to the contact compared to clip gauges, eliminating the influence of elastic deformations or fitting parameters. During the fretting fatigue experiments are two equal contacts simultaneously tested. However, the slip of both contacts is not identical with outliers of more than 10% difference in slip amplitude.  相似文献

The three-dimensional small deformation of a single Newtonian drop immersed in an immiscible Newtonian liquid was investigated, both in slow steady shear and during retraction after cessation of shear. The experiments were performed in a parallel plate apparatus equipped with video- enhanced microscopy. The drop was observed from two perpendicular directions, and accurate measurements were obtained in each view by image analysis. The results were compared to existing theoretical predictions from the exact fluid dynamic problem, obtained perturbatively for the case of small deformations of the drop. Excellent agreement between data and theory was found, thus providing the first assessment of drop shape predictions in steady flow and relaxation for Newtonian fluids.
