The present work deals with the numerical investigation of a collapsing bubble in a liquid–gas fluid, which is modeled as a single compressible medium. The medium is characterized by the stiffened gas law using different material parameters for the two phases. For the discretization of the stiffened gas model, the approach of Saurel and Abgrall is employed where the flow equations, here the Euler equations, for the conserved quantities are approximated by a finite volume scheme, and an upwind discretization is used for the non‐conservative transport equations of the pressure law coefficients. The original first‐order discretization is extended to higher order applying second‐order ENO reconstruction to the primitive variables. The derivation of the non‐conservative upwind discretization for the phase indicator, here the gas fraction, is presented for arbitrary unstructured grids. The efficiency of the numerical scheme is significantly improved by employing local grid adaptation. For this purpose, multiscale‐based grid adaptation is used in combination with a multilevel time stepping strategy to avoid small time steps for coarse cells. The resulting numerical scheme is then applied to the numerical investigation of the 2‐D axisymmetric collapse of a gas bubble in a free flow field and near to a rigid wall. The numerical investigation predicts physical features such as bubble collapse, bubble splitting and the formation of a liquid jet that can be observed in experiments with laser‐induced cavitation bubbles. Opposite to the experiments, the computations reveal insight to the state inside the bubble clearly indicating that these features are caused by the acceleration of the gas due to shock wave focusing and reflection as well as wave interaction processes. While incompressible models have been used to provide useful predictions on the change of the bubble shape of a collapsing bubble near a solid boundary, we wish to study the effects of shock wave emissions into the ambient liquid on the bubble collapse, a phenomenon that may not be captured using an incompressible fluid model. This work discusses the development of a three-dimensional Eulerian–Lagrangian CFD model for a gas–liquid flow in a rectangular column. The model resolves the time-dependent, three-dimensional motion of small gas bubbles in a liquid to simulate the dynamic characteristics of the oscillating bubble plume. Our model incorporates drag, gravity, buoyancy, lift, pressure gradient and virtual mass forces acting on a bubble rising in a liquid, and accounts for two-way momentum coupling between the phases. We use MUSIG model that provides a framework in which the population balance method together with the break up and coalescence models can be incorporated into three-dimensional CFD calculations. We use turbulent flow to describe liquid flow field. The standard κ–ε of turbulence is selected for calculating the properties of turbulent flow. The effect of aspect ratio of the column on the flow pattern, liquid velocity and gas hold-up profiles is discussed.  相似文献

This paper presents a two‐dimensional Lagrangian–Eulerian finite element approach of non‐steady state turbulent fluid flows with free surfaces. The proposed model is based on a velocity–pressure finite element Navier–Stokes solver, including an augmented Lagrangian technique and an iterative resolution of Uzawa type. Turbulent effects are taken into account with the k–ε two‐equation statistical model. Mesh updating is carried out through an arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) method in order to describe properly the free surface evolution. Three comparisons between experimental and numerical results illustrate the efficiency of the method. The first one is turbulent flow in an academic geometry, the second one is a mould filling in effective casting conditions and the third one is a precise confrontation to a water model. The paper presents an investigation of Euler–Lagrangian methods for cavitating two-phase flows. The Euler–Euler methods, widely used for simulations of cavitating flows in ship technology, perform well in regions of moderate flow changes but fail in zones of strong, vortical flow. Reasons are the strong approximations of cavitation models in the Euler concept. Alternatively, Euler–Lagrangian concepts enable more detailed formulations for transport, dynamics and acoustic of discrete vapor bubbles. Test calculations are performed to study the influence of different parameters in the equations of motion and in the Rayleigh–Plesset equation for bubble dynamics. Results confirm that only Lagrangian models are able to describe correctly the bubble behavior in vortices, while Eulerian results deviate strongly. Lagrangian formulations enable additionally the determination of acoustic pressure of cavitation noise. Two-way coupling between the phases is required for large regions of the vapor phase. A new coupling concept between continuous fluid flow and discrete bubble phase is developed and demonstrated for flow through a nozzle. However, the iterative coupling between the phases via volume fractions is computationally expensive and should therefore be applied only in regions where Eulerian treatment fails. A corresponding local concept for combination with an Euler–Euler method is outlined and is in progress.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulation (DNS) is used to investigate turbulent flows with evaporating fuel droplets. For the solution of the carrier gas fluid, the Eulerian method is employed, while for fuel droplets, the Lagrangian method is used. The two-way coupling interactions between the carrier fluid and the fuel droplets are described by the mass, momentum and energy transfers. Direct numerical simulation is performed by a compressible code, named S3D. In this paper, the effects of evaporating and non-evaporating droplets on isotropic turbulent flows are investigated. From the simulations it is found that for the case without evaporation, the inclusion of small droplets suppresses the turbulence, while evaporation usually enhances turbulence at later times for higher mass-loading ratios.  相似文献

Roughly one-third of all strokes are caused by an embolus traveling to a cerebral artery and blocking blood flow in the brain. The objective of this study is to gain a detailed understanding of the dynamics of embolic particles within arteries. Patient computed tomography image is used to construct a three-dimensional model of the carotid bifurcation. An idealized carotid bifurcation model of same vessel diameters was also constructed for comparison. Blood flow velocities and embolic particle trajectories are resolved using a coupled Euler–Lagrange approach. Blood is modeled as a Newtonian fluid, discretized using the finite volume method, with physiologically appropriate inflow and outflow boundary conditions. The embolus trajectory is modeled using Lagrangian particle equations accounting for embolus interaction with blood as well as vessel wall. Both one- and two-way fluid–particle coupling are considered, the latter being implemented using momentum sources augmented to the discretized flow equations. It was observed that for small-to-moderate particle sizes (relative to vessel diameters), the estimated particle distribution ratio—with and without the inclusion of two-way fluid–particle momentum exchange—were found to be similar. The maximum observed differences in distribution ratio with and without the coupling were found to be higher for the idealized bifurcation model. Additionally, the distribution was found to be reasonably matching the volumetric flow distribution for the idealized model, while a notable deviation from volumetric flow was observed in the anatomical model. It was also observed from an analysis of particle path lines that particle interaction with helical flow, characteristic of anatomical vasculature models, could play a prominent role in transport of embolic particle. The results indicate therefore that flow helicity could be an important hemodynamic indicator for analysis of embolus particle transport. Additionally, in the presence of helical flow, and vessel curvature, inclusion of two-way momentum exchange was found to have a secondary effect for transporting small to moderate embolus particles—and one-way coupling could be used as a reasonable approximation, thereby causing substantial savings in computational resources.  相似文献

Multiphase flows are critical components of many physical systems; however, numerical models of multiphase flows with large parameter gradients can be challenging. Here, two different numerical methods, volume of fluid (VOF) and smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), are used to model the buoyant rise of isolated gas bubbles through quiescent fluids for a range of Bond and Reynolds numbers. The VOF is an Eulerian grid–based method, whereas the SPH is Lagrangian and mesh free. Each method has unique strengths and weaknesses, and a comparison of the two approaches as applied to multiphase phenomena has not previously been performed. The VOF and SPH simulations are compared, verified, and validated. Results using two-dimensional VOF and SPH simulations are similar to each other and are able to reproduce numerical benchmarks and experimental results for sufficiently large Morton and Reynolds numbers. It is also shown that at low Reynolds numbers, the two methods, SPH and VOF, diverge in the transient regime of the bubble rise. Regimes that require simulations capable of representing three-dimensional drag are identified as well as regimes in which results from VOF and SPH diverge.  相似文献

Many energy production and chemical processes involve vapor/liquid two-phase flows. Mass and energy are often exchanged between the vapor and the liquid phases, and the fluid mechanics of the two-phase system is strongly influenced by the exchange of momentum between each phase. Significantly, the transport of mass, energy and momentum between the phases takes place across interfaces. Therefore the interfacial area density (i.e. the interfacial area per unit volume) has to be accurately known in order to make reliable predictions of the interfacial transfers. Indeed, the interfacial area density must be known for both steady and transient two-phase flows. It is the purpose of this paper to present a first order relaxation model which is derived from the Boltzmann transport equation, and which accurately describes the evolution of interfacial area density for bubbly flows. In particular, the local, instantaneous interfacial area densities and volume fractions are predicted for vertical flow of a vapor/liquid bubbly flow involving both bubble clusters and individual bubbles.  相似文献

We study the dynamics of gas–liquid flows experimentally and computationally in a rectangular bubble column where the gas source is introduced at the corner. The flow in this reactor is complex and inherently unsteady in nature. The two-dimensional liquid phase velocity field is calculated by an Eulerian approach solving the unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equations. The conservation equations are closed using a two parameter turbulence model. The two-way coupling was accounted for by adding source terms in the conservation equations of the continuous phase to take into account the interaction with the dispersed phase. Bubble tracking is achieved through a Lagrangian approach. Here the equations of motion are solved taking into account the drag, pressure, buoyancy and gravity forces. The time-averaged flows along with the variables which characterize turbulence are analyzed for a wide range of gas flow-rates using Euler–Lagrangian simulations. These simulation predictions are validated with Euler–Eulerian simulations where the gas-phase distribution is captured as a void fraction and PIV experiments. The motion of bubbles induces turbulence in the flow. The applicability of two parameter models for turbulence like the standard kε model on time-averaged flow properties is addressed. From the results of the time averaged velocity field, turbulence intensity, turbulent viscosity and gas hold-up profiles, it is concluded that the Euler–Lagrangian model is applicable at lower gas flow-rates. The Euler–Eulerian approach was found to be valid at lower as well as higher gas flow-rates.  相似文献

Governing equations for a two‐phase 3D helical pipe flow of a non‐Newtonian fluid with large particles are derived in an orthogonal helical coordinate system. The Lagrangian approach is utilized to model solid particle trajectories. The interaction between solid particles and the fluid that carries them is accounted for by a source term in the momentum equation for the fluid. The force‐coupling method (FCM), developed by M.R. Maxey and his group, is adopted; in this method the momentum source term is no longer a Dirac delta function but is spread on a numerical mesh by using a finite‐sized envelop with a spherical Gaussian distribution. The influence of inter‐particle and particle–wall collisions is also taken into account. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A two-fluid model suitable for the calculation of the two-phase flow field around a naval surface ship is presented. This model couples the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations with equations for the evolution of the gas-phase momentum, volume fraction and bubble number density, thereby allowing the multidimensional calculation of the two-phase flow for monodisperse variable size bubbles. The bubble field modifies the liquid solution through changes in the liquid mass and momentum conservation equations. The model is applied to the case of the scavenging of wind-induced sea-background bubbles by an unpropelled US Navy frigate under non-zero Froude number boundary conditions at the free surface. This is an important test case, because it can be simulated experimentally with a model-scale ship in a towing tank. A significant modification of the background bubble field is predicted in the wake of the ship, where bubble depletion occurs along with a reduction in the bubble size due to dissolution. This effect is due to lateral phase distribution phenomena and the generation of an upwelling plume in the near wake that brings smaller bubbles up to the surface. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We simulated the flow of a yield stress fluid around a gas bubble using an augmented Lagrange approach. The piecewise linear equal‐order finite elements for both the velocity and the pressure approximations proposed and analyzed by Latché and Vola in 2004 were applied. A mesh adaptive strategy based on this element‐pair choice was also proposed to render the yield surfaces of desired resolution. The corresponding numerical scheme was formulated for general Herschel–Bulkley fluids. Numerical results on Bingham fluid flows around a slowly rising spherical gas bubble were provided to validate the proposed algorithm. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes that are able to describe in detail the dynamic evolution of the deformable interface in gas–liquid or liquid–liquid flows may be a valuable tool to explore the potential of multi‐fluid flow in narrow channels for process intensification. In the present paper, a computational exercise for co‐current bubble‐train flow in a square vertical mini‐channel is performed to investigate the performance of well‐known CFD codes for this type of flows. The computations are based on the volume‐of‐fluid method (VOF) where the transport equation for the liquid volumetric fraction is solved either by the methods involving a geometrical reconstruction of the interface or by the methods that use higher‐order difference schemes instead. The codes contributing to the present code‐to‐code comparison are an in‐house code and the commercial CFD packages CFX, FLUENT and STAR‐CD. Results are presented for two basic cases. In the first one, the flow is driven by buoyancy only, while in the second case the flow is additionally forced by an external pressure gradient. The results of the code‐to‐code comparison show that only the VOF method with interface reconstruction leads to physically sound and consistent results, whereas the use of difference schemes for the volume fraction equation shows some deficiencies. A method is proposed to calculate the bubble distribution function in a bubbly flow. First a review is given of the equations of motion and the dynamic behaviour of a pair of bubbles moving through a liquid at moderate Reynolds number. Subsequently, a Fokker–Planck type transport equation is derived for the bubble distribution function. It is assumed that the interaction is primarily by frequent and binary encounters, each with weak hydrodynamic interaction between the bubbles. The bubble collision cross-section, which needs to be known for the transport coefficients, is presented. A comparison with PDF-methods for fluid particles in turbulent reacting flows is made.  相似文献

The aim of the present paper is to introduce and to discuss inconsistency errors that may arise when Eulerian and Lagrangian models are coupled for the simulations of turbulent poly-dispersed two-phase flows. In these hybrid models, two turbulence models are implicitly used at the same time and it is important to check that they are consistent, in spite of their apparent different formulations. This issue is best revealed in the case of very small particles, or tracer-limit particles, where it is assessed that coupling inconsistent turbulence models (Eulerian and Lagrangian) can result in non-physical results, notably for second-order fluid velocity moments. Computations for fluid particles in a turbulent channel flow using several coupling strategies are presented to illustrate this question.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulation of liquid–gas–solid flows is uncommon due to the considerable computational cost. As the grid spacing is determined by the smallest involved length scale, large grid sizes become necessary – in particular, if the bubble–particle aspect ratio is on the order of 10 or larger. Hence, it arises the question of both feasibility and reasonability. In this paper, we present a fully parallel, scalable method for direct numerical simulation of bubble–particle interaction at a size ratio of 1–2 orders of magnitude that makes simulations feasible on currently available super-computing resources. With the presented approach, simulations of bubbles in suspension columns consisting of more than 100,000 fully resolved particles become possible. Furthermore, we demonstrate the significance of particle-resolved simulations by comparison to previous unresolved solutions. The results indicate that fully resolved direct numerical simulation is indeed necessary to predict the flow structure of bubble–particle interaction problems correctly.  相似文献

In this paper we present a numerical model for the coarse-grid simulation of turbulent liquid jet breakup using an Eulerian–Lagrangian coupling. To picture the unresolved droplet formation near the liquid jet interface in the case of coarse grids we considered a theoretical model to describe the unresolved flow instabilities leading to turbulent breakup. These entrained droplets are then represented by an Eulerian–Lagrangian hybrid concept. On the one hand, we used a volume of fluid method (VOF) to characterize the global spreading and the initiation of droplet formation; one the other hand, Lagrangian droplets are released at the liquid–gas interface according to the theoretical model balancing consolidating and disruptive energies. Here, a numerical coupling was required between Eulerian liquid core and Lagrangian droplets using mass and momentum source terms. The presented methodology was tested for different liquid jets in Rayleigh, wind-induced and atomization regimes and validated against literature data. This comparison reveals fairly good qualitative agreement in the cases of jet spreading, jet instability and jet breakup as well as relatively accurate size distribution and Sauter mean diameter (SMD) of the droplets. Furthermore, the model was able to capture the regime transitions from Rayleigh instability to atomization appropriately. Finally, the presented sub-grid model predicts the effect of the gas-phase pressure on the droplet sizes very well.  相似文献

In the framework of the foam process modelling, this paper presents a numerical strategy for the direct 3D simulation of the expansion of gas bubbles into a molten polymer. This expansion is due to a gas overpressure. The polymer is assumed to be incompressible and to behave as a pseudo‐plastic fluid. Each bubble is governed by a simple ideal gas law. The velocity and the pressure fields, defined in the liquid by a Stokes system, are subsequently extended to each bubble in a way of not perturbing the interface velocity. Hence, a global velocity–pressure‐mixed system is solved over the whole computational domain, thanks to a discretization based on an unstructured first‐order finite element. Since dealing with an Eulerian approach, an interface capturing method is used to follow the bubble evolution. For each bubble, a pure advection equation is solved by using a space–time discontinuous‐Galerkin method, coupled with an r‐adaptation technique. Finally, the numerical strategy is achieved by considering a global mesh expansion motion, which conserves the amount of liquid into the computational domain during the expansion. The expansion of one bubble is firstly considered, and the simulations are compared with an analytical model. The formation of a cellular structure is then investigated by considering the expansion of 64 bubbles in 2D and the expansion of 400 bubbles in 3D. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
