In the present study, a vibration frequency analysis of a bi-layered cylindrical shell composed of two independent functionally graded layers is presented. The thickness of the shell layers is assumed to be equal and constant. Material properties of the constituents of bi-layered functionally graded cylindrical shell are assumed to vary smoothly and continuously through the thickness of the layers of the shell and are controlled by volume fraction power law distribution. The expressions for strain–displacement and curvature–displacement relationships are utilized from Love’s first approximation linear thin shell theory. The versatile Rayleigh–Ritz approach is employed to formulate the frequency equations in the form of eigenvalue problem. Influence of material distribution in the two functionally graded layers of the cylindrical shells is investigated on shell natural frequencies for various shell parameters with simply supported end conditions. To check the validity, accuracy and efficiency of the present methodology, results obtained are compared with those available in the literature.

The effects of the curvature radius of a cylindrical shell on stress intensity factors are investigated in circumferential (inner and outer) semielliptical surface cracks in a cylindrical shell. What is new in this paper is to have given: (1) The stress intensity factors for surface cracks in a cylindircal shell are determined by photoelastic technique. (2) By a special method photoelastic slices are handled for obtaining a clear caustic curve, and the stress intensity factors for surface cracks in a cylindrical shell are determined by the caustic method. (3) An approximate equation of curvature correction factor Fc is proposed. (4) Effects of the curvature radius R of a cylindrical shell on the stress intensity factors of surface cracks are obtained. The results of this paper are in fair agreement with already existing analytical results. The approximate equation of curvature correction factor Fc can be widely used for engineering purposes.

This paper considers the problem of equilibrium of a nonlinearly elastic spherical shell filled with a heavy fluid and resting on a smooth, absolutely rigid, flat surface. The weight of the shell is assumed to be negligible in comparison with the weight of the fluid filling it. The contact region with the supporting plane is one of the unknowns in the problem. Equilibrium equations for a membrane shell are obtained in an accurate nonlinear formulation. Stresses and strains of a shell made of a Mooney–Rivlin material are numerically investigated. The results are compared with calculation results for the case of inflation of a spherical shell ignoring the weight of the fluid filling. The effect of the fluid weight on shell strains and stresses is estimated.

A compressive postbuckling analysis is presented for a laminated cylindrical shell with piezoelectric actuators subjected to the combined action of mechanical, electric and thermal loads. The temperature field considered is assumed to be a uniform distribution over the shell surface and through the shell thickness, and the electric field is assumed to be the transverse component EZ only. The material properties are assumed to be independent of the temperature and the electric field. The governing equations are based on the classical shell theory with von Kármán–Donnell-type kinematic nonlinearity. The nonlinear prebuckling deformations and initial geometric imperfections of the shell are both taken into account. A boundary layer theory of shell buckling, which includes the effects of nonlinear prebuckling deformations, large deflections in the postbuckling range, and initial geometric imperfections of the shell, is extended to the case of hybrid laminated cylindrical shells. A singular perturbation technique is employed to determine the buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths. The numerical illustrations concern the compressive postbuckling behavior of perfect and imperfect, cross-ply laminated cylindrical thin shells with fully covered or embedded piezoelectric actuators under different sets of thermal and electric loading conditions. The effects played by temperature rise, applied voltage, shell geometric parameter, stacking sequence, as well as initial geometric imperfections are studied.

The paper studies the interaction of a spherical shock wave with an elastic circular cylindrical shell immersed in an infinite acoustic medium. The shell is assumed infinitely long. The wave source is quite close to the shell, causing deformation of just a small portion of the shell, which makes it possible to represent the solution by a double Fourier series. The method allows the exact determination of the hydrodynamic forces acting on the shell and analysis of its stress state. Some characteristic features of the stress state are described for different distances to the wave source. Formulas are proposed for establishing the safety conditions of the shell.Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika, Vol. 40, No. 9, pp. 94–104, September 2004.

Summary The analytical method is presented for a cylindrical shell with spiral groove. The governing equations of cylindrical shell derived by one of the authors are introduced and Kirchhoff's boundary conditions along any smooth path are deduced from the principle of energy. The analysis is carried out for a cylindrical shell under a uniform bending moment by considering the equilibrium conditions of a shell element. Numerical results are given for various geometrical parameters of cylindrical shell and the angle of the spiral groove, some of which are confirmed by an experiment.

The free flexural vibration of a hung clamped-free cylindrical shell partially submerged in a fluid is investigated. The fluid is assumed to be inviscid and irrotational. The cylindrical shell is modelled by using the Rayleigh-Ritz method based on Sanders’ shell theory. The kinetic energy of the fluid is derived by solving the boundary-value problem related to the fluid motion. The natural vibration characteristics of the partially submerged cylindrical shell are discussed with respect to the added virtual mass approach. In this study, the nondimensionalized added virtual mass incremental factor for the partially submerged finite shell is derived. This factor can be readily used to estimate the change in the natural frequency of the shell due to the presence of a fluid.

The physical occurrence that crack surfaces are in contact at the compressive edges when a flat or a shell is subjected to a bending load has been recognized. This article presents a theoretical analysis of crack–face contact effect on the stress intensity factor of various shell structures such as spherical shell, cylindrical shell containing an axial crack, cylindrical shell containing a circumferential crack and shell with two non-zero curvatures, under a bending load. The formulation of the problem is based on the shear deformation theory, incorporating crack–face contact by introducing distributed force at the compressive edge. Material orthotropy is concerned in this analysis. Three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) is conduced to compare with the theoretical solution. It is found that due to curvature effect crack–face contact behavior in shells differs from that in flat plates, in that partial contact of crack surfaces may occur in shells, depending on the shell curvature and the nature of the bending load. Crack–face contact has significant influence on the stress intensity factor and it increases the membrane component but decreases the bending component.

The paper describes how the Moiré reflective technique can be used to determine transverse-bending moments in a cylindrical shell. A cylindrical screen is used and the pattern of lines on it is reflected in the shell which acts as a lens and reduces the apparent pitch. When a photograph of the unloaded shell is considered, the lines on the negative are found to vary only slightly in width so that within the limits of movement of the ray reflected from the shell the pitch can be considered uniform. Loading the shell alters its radius and this alters the pitch of the lines as they appear on the photographic plate. It is shown that this change in line width does not affect the fringe pattern. Since the length of the reflected ray increases at distances away from the center of the photograph, a correction has to be applied to fringes at these points to obtain the correct change of slope. Photographs of the fringe pattern are obtained for various angular positions round the shell and, from these photographs, graphs of fringe against position round the shell are plotted. After correction, the slope of these graphs allows the bending moment at a point to be calculated. It is noted that transverse and radial deflections can influence the fringe pattern and this is allowed for. By taking photographs of the unloaded shell and measuring the widths of lines on the negative, the radius of the shell can be calculated and compared with spherometer readings. Knowing the bending moment at a point, the change in radius is calculated and the calculated final radius compared with that obtained from measurements on the separate photograph of the loaded shell. Finally, the deflections on the transverse center line are calculated from the fringe patterns and compared with deflection-gage readings.

The isothermal response of a viscoelastic cylindrical shell, of finite length, to arbitary axisymmetric surface forces, initial conditions, and boundary conditions is considered within the linear theory of thin shells. The problem is formulated with the effects of shear deformation and rotatory inertia included; the viscoelastic properties are assumed to be isotropic and homogeneous. The response is first found formally in terms of a causal Green's function. It is then shown that when Poisson's ratio is constant, the causal Green's function can be expanded in a series of orthonormal spatial eigenfunctions of an associated elastic shell eigenvalue problem. The resulting solution for the general problem is an eigenfunction series with Laplace transformed time-dependent coefficients. The general solution is applied to predicting the motion of a uniform, simply-supported cylindrical shell, initially quiescent, which is subjected to a step pressure moving with constant velocity. For this example, the relaxation function of the shell material in uniaxial extension is taken to be that of a standard linear solid. The motions predicted by simpler shell models, namely, shells with bending only and without bending, are also considered for comparison. Here, the absolute values of the Fourier coefficients in the shell displacement series go to zero faster than the inverse of the first or second power of positive integers when bending is excluded or included, respectively. Numerical results are presented for a moderately long and relatively thick, nearly elastic, cylindrical shell.

The stress–strain state of a deep spherical composite shell is analyzed. In the general case, the shell is weakened by openings located at the poles. The variational difference method is applied to solve the problem. Calculations are carried out for an orthotropic shell of low shear stiffness.

In this paper an optical technique for the measurement of radial deformation in circular cylindrical shells is discussed. The technique is a modification and improvement on an earlier method, using a conical mirror of simple geometry to view a grating reflected from the inner surface of the shell. The new system allows more precise alignment of the components of the optical system with the shell. Fringes obtained by superposition as in the Ligtenberg moiré method, or deviations of lines from a regular pattern in a photographic image provide a measure of the slope changes on the surface of the shell. Theoretical relations are presented for three grid orientations, at least two of which have to be used in conjunction to determine the two components of slope. Illustrations for the use and accuracy of the technique are presented for two cases. In the first, deflections due to a tilt of the axis of the test shell are measured; in the second, deformations associated with a radial point load applied at the free end of a cylindrical shell with one end built in are determined.

A general approach, based on shearable shell theory, to predict the influence of geometric non-linearities on the natural frequencies of an elastic anisotropic laminated cylindrical shell incorporating large displacements and rotations is presented in this paper. The effects of shear deformations and rotary inertia are taken into account in the equations of motion. The hybrid finite element approach and shearable shell theory are used to determine the shape function matrix. The analytical solution is divided into two parts. In part one, the displacement functions are obtained by the exact solution of the equilibrium equations of a cylindrical shell based on shearable shell theory instead of the usually used and more arbitrary interpolating polynomials. The mass and linear stiffness matrices are derived by exact analytical integration. In part two, the modal coefficients are obtained, using Green's exact strain-displacement relations, for these displacement functions. The second- and third-order non-linear stiffness matrices are then calculated by precise analytical integration and superimposed on the linear part of equations to establish the non-linear modal equations. Comparison with available results is satisfactorily good.

Partial separation of variables and reexpansion of cylindrical and plane waves are used to find the solution describing the uniform motion of a load along a thin circular cylindrical shell in an elastic half-space with the free surface parallel to the axis of the shell. This is a model problem for studying the dynamics of tunnels and shallow-buried pipelines under transport loads. Dispersion curves for the cases of sliding and tight contact between the shell and the half-space are plotted and analyzed. The effect of the shell parameters on the stress–strain state of the half-space is examined
