A numerical investigation of the steady-state, laminar, axi-symmetric, mixed convection heat transfer in the annulus between two concentric vertical cylinders using porous inserts is carried out. The inner cylinder is subjected to constant heat flux and the outer cylinder is insulated. A finite volume code is used to numerically solve the sets of governing equations. The Darcy–Brinkman–Forchheimer model along with Boussinesq approximation is used to solve the flow in the porous region. The Navier–Stokes equation is used to describe the flow in the clear flow region. The dependence of the average Nusselt number on several flow and geometric parameters is investigated. These include: convective parameter, λ, Darcy number, Da, thermal conductivity ratio, K r, and porous-insert thickness to gap ratio (H/D). It is found that, in general, the heat transfer enhances by the presence of porous layers of high thermal conductivity ratios. It is also found that there is a critical thermal conductivity ratio on which if the values of Kr are higher than the critical value the average Nusselt number starts to decrease. Also, it found that at low thermal conductivity ratio (K r ≈ 1) and for all values of λ the porous material acts as thermal insulation.  相似文献

Mixed convection heat transfer about a semi-infinite inclined plate in the presence of magneto and thermal radiation effects is studied. The fluid is assumed to be incompressible and dense. The nonlinear coupled parabolic partial differential equations governing the flow are transformed into the non-similar boundary layer equations, which are then solved numerically using the Keller box method. The effects of the mixed convection parameter R i, the angle of inclination α, the magnetic parameter M and the radiation–conduction parameter R d on the velocity and temperature profiles as well as on the local skin friction and local heat transfer parameters. For some specific values of the governing parameters, the results are compared with those available in the literature and a fairly good agreement is obtained.  相似文献

The effects of temperature-dependent density, viscosity and thermal conductivity on the free convective steady laminar boundary layer flow by the presence of radiation for large temperature differences, are studied. The fluid density and the thermal conductivity are assumed to vary linearly with temperature. The fluid viscosity is assumed to vary as a reciprocal of a linear function of temperature. The usual Boussinesq approximation is neglected due to the large temperature difference between the plate and the fluid. The nonlinear boundary layer equations, governing the problem under consideration, are solved numerically by applying an efficient numerical technique based on the shooting method. The effects of the density/temperature parameter n, the thermal conductivity parameter , the viscosity/temperature parameter r and the radiation parameter F are examined on the velocity and temperature fields as well as the coefficient of heat flux and the shearing stress at the plate.  相似文献

The problem of non-Darcy natural convection adjacent to a vertical cylinder embedded in a thermally stratified porous medium has been analyzed. Nonsimilarity solutions are obtained for the case that the ambient temperature increases linearly with height of the cylinder. A generalized flow model was used in the present study to include the effects of the macroscopic viscous term and the microscopic inertial force. Also, the thermal dispersion effect is considered in the energy equation. Thus, the main aim of this work is to examine the effects of thermal stratification and non-Darcy flow phenomena on the free convection flow and heat transfer characteristics. It was found that the present problem depends on six parameters, namely, the local thermal stratification parameter ξ, the boundary effect parameter Bp, the modified Grashof number Gr*, wall temperature exponent m, the curvature parameter ω, and the modified Rayleigh number based on pore diameter Ra d . The impacts of these governing parameters on the local heat transfer parameter are discussed in great detail. Also, representative velocity and temperature profiles are presented at selected values of the thermal stratification parameter. In general, the local heat transfer parameter is increased with increasing the values of m, ω, and Ra d ; while it is decreased with increasing the values of ξ, Bp, and Gr*. It is the purpose of this paper to extract unlike intermolecular potential energies of five carbon dioxide-based binary gas mixtures including CO2–He, CO2–Ne, CO2–Ar, CO2–Kr, and CO2–Xe from viscosity data and compare the calculated potentials with other models potential energy reported in literature. Then, dilute transport properties consisting of viscosity, diffusion coefficient, thermal diffusion factor, and thermal conductivity of aforementioned mixtures are calculated from the calculated potential energies and compared with literature data. Rather accurate correlations for the viscosity coefficient of afore-cited mixtures embracing the temperature range 200 K < T < 3273.15 K is reproduced from the present unlike intermolecular potentials energy. Our estimated accuracies for the viscosity are to within ±2%. In addition, the calculated potential energies are used to present smooth correlations for other transport properties. The accuracies of the binary diffusion coefficients are of the order of ±3%. Finally, the unlike interaction energy and the calculated low density viscosity have been employed to calculate high density viscosities using Vesovic–Wakeham method.  相似文献

This paper presents heat transfer process in a two-dimensional steady hydromagnetic convective flow of an electrically conducting fluid over a flat plate with partial slip at the surface of the boundary subjected to the convective surface heat flux at the boundary. The analysis accounts for both temperature-dependent viscosity and temperature dependent thermal conductivity. The local similarity equations are derived and solved numerically using the Nachtsheim-Swigert iteration procedure. Results for the dimensionless velocity, temperature and ambient Prandtl number within the boundary layer are displayed graphically delineating the effect of various parameters characterizing the flow. The results show that momentum boundary layer thickness significantly depends on the surface convection parameter, Hartmann number and on the sign of the variable viscosity parameter. The results also show that plate surface temperature is higher when there is no slip at the plate compared to its presence. For both slip and no-slip cases surface temperature of the plate can be controlled by controlling the strength of the applied magnetic field. In modelling the thermal boundary layer flow with variable viscosity and variable thermal conductivity, the Prandtl number must be treated as a variable irrespective of flow conditions whether there is slip or no-slip at the boundary to obtain realistic results.  相似文献

The onset of buoyancy-driven convection in an initially quiescent ferrofluid saturated horizontal porous layer in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field is investigated. The Brinkman-Lapwood extended Darcy equation with fluid viscosity different from effective viscosity is used to describe the flow in the porous medium. The lower boundary of the porous layer is assumed to be rigid-paramagnetic, while the upper paramagnetic boundary is considered to be either rigid or stress-free. The thermal conditions include fixed heat flux at the lower boundary, and a general convective–radiative exchange at the upper boundary, which encompasses fixed temperature and fixed heat flux as particular cases. The resulting eigenvalue problem is solved numerically using the Galerkin technique. It is found that increase in the Biot number Bi, porous parameter σ, viscosity ratio Λ, magnetic susceptibility χ, and decrease in the magnetic number M 1 and non-linearity of magnetization M 3 is to delay the onset of ferroconvection in a porous medium. Further, increase in M 1, M 3, and decrease in χ, Λ, σ and Bi is to decrease the size of convection cells.  相似文献

The analysis is carried out for buoyancy-induced boundary layer flow adjacent to an inclined heated surface in a saturated porous medium incorporating the variation of permeability and thermal conductivity due to paking particles with non-uniform temperature. The surface temperature is assumed to vary as a power function of the axial coordinate measured from the leading edge of the surface. Both the streamwise and normal component of the buoyancy force are retained in the momentum equations. Numerical solutions are obtained in the cases of uniform and nonuniform permeability and various values of the inclination parameter ξ (x) = (Ra x cos ϕ)1/3 tan ϕ by using finite difference method. The problem is solved using nonsimilarity solutions for the case of variable wall temperature. Results for the details of the velocity and temperature fields as well as local Nusselt number have been presented.  相似文献

A mathematical model will be analyzed in order to study the effects of variables viscosity and thermal conductivity on unsteady heat and mass transfer over a vertical wavy surface in the presence of magnetic field numerically by using a simple coordinate transformation to transform the complex wavy surface into a flat plate. The fluid viscosity is assumed to vary as a exponential function of temperature and thermal conductivity is assumed to vary linearly with temperature. An implicit marching Chebyshev collocation scheme is employed for the analysis. Numerical solutions are obtained for different values of variable viscosity, variable thermal conductivity and MHD variation parameter. Numerical results show that, variable viscosity, variable thermal conductivity and MHD variation parameter have significant influences on the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles as well as for the local skin friction, Nusselt number and Sherwood number.  相似文献

Steady laminar forced convection gaseous slip-flow through parallel-plates micro-channel filled with porous medium under Local Thermal Non-Equilibrium (LTNE) condition is studied numerically. We consider incompressible Newtonian gas flow, which is hydrodynamically fully developed while thermally is developing. The Darcy–Brinkman–Forchheimer model embedded in the Navier–Stokes equations is used to model the flow within the porous domain. The present study reports the effect of several operating parameters on velocity slip and temperature jump at the wall. Mainly, the current study demonstrates the effects of: Knudsen number (Kn), Darcy number (Da), Forchheimer number (Γ), Peclet number (Pe), Biot number (Bi), and effective thermal conductivity ratio (K R) on velocity slip and temperature jump at the wall. Results are given in terms of skin friction (C f Re *) and Nusselt number (Nu). It is found that the skin friction: (1) increases as Darcy number increases; (2) decreases as Forchheimer number or Knudsen number increases. Heat transfer is found to (1) decreases as the Knudsen number, Forchheimer number, or K R increases; (2) increases as the Peclet number, Darcy number, or Biot number increases.  相似文献

An analysis of fully developed combined free and forced convective flow in a fluid saturated porous medium channel bounded by two vertical parallel plates is presented. The flow is modeled using Brinkman equation model. The viscous and Darcy dissipation terms are also included in the energy equation. Three types of thermal boundary conditions such as isothermal–isothermal, isoflux–isothermal, and isothermal–isoflux for the left–right walls of the channel are considered. Analytical solutions for the governing ordinary differential equations are obtained by perturbation series method. In addition, closed form expressions for the Nusselt number at both the left and right channel walls are derived. Results have been presented for a wide range of governing parameters such as porous parameter, ratio of Grashof number and Reynolds number, viscosity ratio, width ratio, and conductivity ratio on velocity, and temperature fields. It is found that the presence of porous matrix in one of the region reduces the velocity and temperature.  相似文献

The simultaneous effect of local thermal nonequilibrium (LTNE) and magnetic field dependent (MFD) viscosity on thermal convective instability in a horizontal ferrofluid saturated Brinkman porous layer in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field is studied analytically. The results indicate that the onset of Brinkman ferroconvection is delayed with increasing MFD viscosity parameter but the critical wave number is found to be independent of this parameter. When compared to the simultaneous presence of buoyancy and magnetic forces, it is observed that the onset of Brinkman ferroconvection is delayed more when the magnetic forces alone are present. Asymptotic solutions for both small and large values of scaled inter-phase heat transfer coefficient H t are compared with those computed numerically and good agreement is found between them. Besides, the influence of magnetic and LTNE parameters on the stability characteristics of the system is also discussed. The available results in the literature are recovered as particular cases from the present study.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the convective heat transfer enhancement mechanism of microencapsulated phase change material slurries based on the analogy between convective heat transfer and thermal conduction with thermal sources. The influence of each factor affecting the heat transfer enhancement for laminar flow in a circular tube with constant wall temperature is analyzed using an effective specific heat capacity model. The model is validated with results available in the literature. The analysis and the results clarify the heat transfer enhancement mechanism and the main factors influencing the heat transfer. In addition, the conventional Nusselt number definition of phase change slurries for internal flow is modified to describe the degree of heat transfer enhancement of microencapsulated phase change material slurries. The modification is also consistent evaluation of the convective heat transfer of internal and external flows.c volumetric concentration of microcapsules - cm mass concentration of microcapsules - cp specific heat, kJ kg–1 K–1 - hfs phase change material heat of fusion, kJ kg–1 - hm* modified convective heat transfer coefficient, W m–2 K–1 - k thermal conductivity, W m–1 K–1 - ke effective thermal conductivity of slurry, W m–1 K–1 - kb slurry bulk thermal conductivity, W m–1 K–1 - ML dimensionless initial subcooling - Mr dimensionless phase change temperature range - Nu conventional Nusselt number - Nu* improved Nusselt number - qwn wall heat flux, Wm–2 - Pe Peclet number - Pr Prandtl number - Re Reynolds number - r radial coordinate, m - r0 duct radius, m - r1 dimensionless radial coordinate - Ste Stefan number - T temperature, K - T1 lower phase change temperature limit, K - T2 upper phase change temperature limit, K - Ti slurry inlet temperature, K - u axial velocity, m/s - v radial velocity, m/s - x axial coordinate, m - x1 dimensionless axial coordinate - thermal diffusivity, m2/s - dimensionless temperature - dynamic viscosity, N·s/m2 - kinematic viscosity, m2/s - t width of thermal boundary, m - degree of heat transfer enhancement, = hm*/(hm*)single - b bulk fluid (slurry) - b0 slurry without phase change - l liquid - m mean - s solid - f suspending fluid - p microcapsule particles - w wall - single single-phase fluid  相似文献

In this study, a steady, fully developed laminar forced convection heat augmentation via porous fins in isothermal parallel-plate duct is numerically investigated. High-thermal conductivity porous fins are attached to the inner walls of two parallel-plate channels to enhance the heat transfer characteristics of the flow under consideration. The Darcy–Brinkman–Forchheimer model is used to model the flow inside the porous fins. This study reports the effect of several operating parameters on the flow hydrodynamics and thermal characteristics. This study demonstrates, mainly, the effects of porous fin thickness, Darcy number, thermal conductivity ratio, Reynolds number, and microscopic inertial coefficient on the thermal performance of the present flow. It is found that the highest Nusselt number is achieved at fully filled porous duct which requires the highest pumping pressure. The results show that using porous fins requires less pumping pressure with comparable high heat augmentation weight against fully filled porous duct. It is found that higher Nusselt numbers are achieved by increasing the microscopic inertial coefficient (A), the Reynolds number (Re), and the thermal conductivity of the porous substrate k 2. The results show that heat transfer can be enhanced (1) with the use of high thermal conductivity fins, (2) by decreasing the Darcy number, and (3) by increasing microscopic inertial coefficient.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate the effects of temperature-dependent viscosity, thermal conductivity and internal heat generation/absorption on the MHD flow and heat transfer of a non-Newtonian UCM fluid over a stretching sheet. The governing partial differential equations are first transformed into coupled non-linear ordinary differential equation using a similarity transformation. The resulting intricate coupled non-linear boundary value problem is solved numerically by a second order finite difference scheme known as Keller-Box method for various values of the pertinent parameters. Numerical computations are performed for two different cases namely, zero and non-zero values of the fluid viscosity parameter. That is, 1/?? r ??0 and 1/?? r ??0 to get the effects of the magnetic field and the Maxwell parameter on the velocity and temperature fields, for several physical situations. Comparisons with previously published works are presented as special cases. Numerical results for the skin-friction co-efficient and the Nusselt number with changes in the Maxwell parameter and the fluid viscosity parameter are tabulated for different values of the pertinent parameters. The results obtained for the flow characteristics reveal many interesting behaviors that warrant further study on the non-Newtonian fluid phenomena, especially the UCM fluid phenomena. Maxwell fluid reduces the wall-shear stress.  相似文献

The present investigation is concerned with the effect of Hall currents on the flow and heat transfer of an electrically conducting fluid over an unsteady stretching surface in presence of a strong magnetic field. The induced magnetic field is neglected while the electron-atom collision frequency is assumed to be relatively high, so that the Hall effect is assumed to exist. The incorrect similarity transformation of Elbashbeshy and Bazid (Heat Mass Transfer 41:1–4, 2004). is corrected and a physically realistic distribution of the velocity and temperature is obtained. Using a similarity transformation the governing time dependent boundary layer equations for momentum and thermal energy are reduced to a set of coupled ordinary differential equations which are then solved numerically by the shooting method. Effects of the magnetic field, M , Hall parameter, m, and the unsteadiness parameter, S, on the velocity and temperature profiles as well as the local skin friction coefficients and the heat transfer rate are shown graphically.  相似文献

Two-dimensional numerical studies of flow and temperature fields for turbulent natural convection and surface radiation in inclined differentially heated enclosures are performed. Investigations are carried out over a wide range of Rayleigh numbers from 108 to 1012, with the angle of inclination varying between 0° and 90°. Turbulence is modeled with a novel variant of the k–ε closure model. The predicted results are validated against experimental and numerical results reported in literature. The effect of the inclination of the enclosure on pure turbulent natural convection and the latter’s interaction with surface radiation are brought out. Profiles of turbulent kinetic energy and effective viscosity are studied to observe the net effect on the intensity of turbulence caused by the interaction of natural convection and surface radiation. The variations of local Nusselt number and average Nusselt number are presented for various inclination angles. Marked change in the convective Nusselt number is found with the orientation of enclosure. Also analyzed is the influence of change in emissivity on the flow and heat transfer. A correlation relevant to practical applications in the form of average Nusselt number, as a function of Rayleigh number, Ra, radiation convection parameter, N RC and inclination angle of the enclosure, φ is proposed.  相似文献

The paper presents a study of the laminar mixed convection adjacent to vertical continuously stretching sheets, taking into account the effects of variable viscosity and variable thermal diffusivity. The similarity solutions are reported for isothermal sheet moving with a velocity of the form uw=Bx0.5 and a continuous linearly stretching sheet with a linear surface temperature distribution. The equations of conservation of mass, momentum and energy, which govern the flow and heat transfer, are solved numerically by using the shooting method. The numerical results obtained for the flow and heat transfer characteristics reveal many interesting behaviors. The numerical results show that, variable viscosity, variable thermal diffusivity, the velocity exponent parameter, the temperature exponent parameter and the buoyancy force parameter have significant influences on the velocity and temperature profiles, shear stress and Nusselt number in two cases air and water.  相似文献

A mixed convection flow of an optically dense viscous incompressible fluid along a horizontal circular cylinder has been studied with the effect of radiation when the surface temperature is uniform. Using appropriate transformations, the boundary layer equations governing the flow are reduced to local nonsimilarity form. Solutions of the governing equations are obtained employing the implicit finite difference method. Effects of varying the pertinent parameters, such as, the Planck number, R w the surface temperature parameter, θw and the buoyancy parameter, α on the local skin-friction and local heat transfer coefficients are shown graphically as well as in tabular form against the curvature parameter ξ, while taking Prandtl number Pr = 1.0. It is found that an increase of R dw or α leads to increases in the values of the local skin-friction and the local rate of heat transfer coefficients. At the stagnation point asymptotic solutions for large value of α are also obtained and the effect of the other pertinent parameters on the formation of the flow separation are studied. The effect of local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) on the onset of thermomagnetic convection in a ferromagnetic fluid-saturated horizontal porous layer in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field is investigated. A modified Forchheimer-extended Darcy equation is employed to describe the flow in the porous medium, and a two-field model is used for temperature representing the solid and fluid phases separately. It is found that both the critical Darcy–Rayleigh number and the corresponding wave number are modified by the LTNE effects. Asymptotic solutions for both small and large values of scaled interphase heat transfer coefficient H t are presented and compared with those computed numerically. An excellent agreement is obtained between the asymptotic and the numerical results. Besides, the influence of magnetic parameters on the instability of the system is also discussed. The available results in the literature are recovered as particular cases from the present study.  相似文献
