In this paper, an optimal fuzzy sliding mode controller is used for tracking the position of robot manipulator, is presented. In the proposed control, initially by using inverse dynamic method, the known sections of a robot manipulator’s dynamic are eliminated. This elimination is done due to reduction over structured and unstructured uncertainties boundaries. In order to overcome against existing uncertainties for the tracking position of a robot manipulator, a classic sliding mode control is designed. The mathematical proof shows the closed-loop system in the presence of this controller has the global asymptotic stability. Then, by applying the rules that are obtained from the design of classic sliding mode control and TS fuzzy model, a fuzzy sliding mode control is designed that is free of undesirable phenomena of chattering. Eventually, by applying the PSO optimization algorithm, the existing membership functions are adjusted in the way that the error tracking robot manipulator position is converged toward zero. In order to illustrate the performance of the proposed controller, a two degree-of-freedom robot manipulator is used as the case study. The simulation results confirm desirable performance of optimal fuzzy sliding mode control.

This paper proposes an active disturbance rejection adaptive controller for tracking control of a class of uncertain nonlinear systems with consideration of both parametric uncertainties and uncertain nonlinearities by effectively integrating adaptive control with extended state observer via backstepping method. Parametric uncertainties are handled by the synthesized adaptive law and the remaining uncertainties are estimated by extended state observer and then compensated in a feedforward way. Moreover, both matched uncertainties and unmatched uncertainties can be estimated by constructing an extended state observer for each channel of the considered nonlinear plant. Since parametric uncertainties can be reduced by parameter adaptation, the learning burden of extended state observer is much reduced. Consequently, high-gain feedback is avoided and improved tracking performance can be expected. The proposed controller theoretically guarantees a prescribed transient tracking performance and final tracking accuracy in general while achieving asymptotic tracking when the uncertain nonlinearities are not time-variant. The motion control of a motor-driven robot manipulator is investigated as an application example with some suitable modifications and improvements, and comparative simulation results are obtained to verify the high tracking performance nature of the proposed control strategy.

Function approximation-based sliding mode adaptive control
For the position tracking in DC motor with unknown bound time-varying dead zone uncertainties, a novel sliding mode adaptive controller is proposed by means of sliding mode and function approximation technique in this paper. First, control law with an uncertain term and another compensative term is obtained using sliding mode technique, and then the function approximation technique is employed to transform the uncertain term into finite combinations of orthonormal basis functions. The concrete expressions of uncertain term and compensative term can thus be derived based on the Lyapunov design. Actual system control experiments of the sliding adaptive control proposed are given.

This paper addresses the finite-time prescribed performance control of MEMS gyroscopes. From the perspective of practical engineering, this paper arranges the desirable transient and steady-state performances according to the engineering requirements in the controller design procedure. For the tracking performance, prescribed performance control is studied to limited the steady-state error and the maximum overshoot. For the prescribed settling time, super-twisting sliding mode control and nonsingular terminal sliding mode control are employed to achieve finite-time convergence, respectively. The system stability is verified via Lyapunov approach. Through simulation tests, it is demonstrated that prescribed performance and finite-time convergence can be obtained under the proposed control scheme.

In this paper, a novel adaptive interval type-2 fuzzy sliding mode control (AIT2FSMC) methodology is proposed based on the integration of sliding mode control and adaptive interval type-2 fuzzy control for chaotic system. The AIT2FSMC system is comprised of a fuzzy control design and a hitting control design. In the fuzzy control design, an interval type-2 fuzzy controller is designed to mimic a feedback linearization (FL) control law. In the hitting control design, a hitting controller is designed to compensate the approximation error between the FL control law and the interval type-2 fuzzy controller. The parameters of the interval type-2 fuzzy controller, as well as the uncertainty bound of the approximation error, are tuned adaptively. The adaptive laws are derived in the sense of Lyapunov stability theorem, thus the stability of the system can be guaranteed. The proposed control system compared to adaptive fuzzy sliding mode control (AFSMC). Simulation results show that the proposed control systems can achieve favorable performance and robust with respect to system uncertainties and external disturbances.

This paper presents a novel implementation of an adaptive robust second-order sliding mode control (ARSSMC) on a mobile robot with four Mecanum wheels. Each wheel of the mobile robot is actuated by separate motors. It is the first time that higher-order sliding mode control method is implemented for the trajectory tracking control of Mecanum-wheeled mobile robot. Kinematic and dynamic modeling of the robot is done to derive an equation of motion in the presence of friction, external force disturbance, and uncertainties. In order to make the system robust, second-order sliding mode control law is derived. Further, adaptive laws are defined for adaptive estimation of switching gains. To check the tracking performance of the proposed controller, simulations are performed and comparisons of the obtained results are made with adaptive robust sliding mode control (ARSMC) and PID controller. In addition, a new and low-cost experimental approach is proposed to implement the proposed control law on a real robot. Experimental results prove that without compromising on the dynamics of the robot real-time implementation is possible in less computational time. The simulation and experimental results obtained confirms the superiority of ARSSMC over ARSMC and PID controller in terms of integral square error (ISE), integral absolute error (IAE), and integral time-weighted absolute error (ITAE), control energy and total variance (TV).

Multirotor aerial robotic vehicles attract much attention due to their increased load capacity and high maneuverability. In this paper, a robust optimal attitude controller is proposed for a kind of multirotor helicopters—hexarotors. It consists of a nominal optimal controller and a robust compensator. The nominal controller is designed based on the linear quadratic regulation (LQR) method to achieve desired tracking of the nominal system, and the robust compensator is added to restrain the influence of uncertainties. The key contributions of this work are twofold: firstly, the closed-loop control system is robust against coupling and nonlinear dynamics, parametric uncertainties, and external disturbances; secondly, a decoupled and linear time-invariant control architecture making it ideal for real-time implementation. The attitude tracking errors are proven to be ultimately bounded with specified boundaries. Simulation and experimental results on the hexarotor demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed attitude control method.

Adaptive control of a chaotic permanent magnet synchronous motor
This paper proposes a simple adaptive controller design method for a chaotic permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) based on the sliding mode control theory which has given an effective means to design robust controllers for nonlinear systems with bounded uncertainties. The proposed sliding mode adaptive controller does not require any information on the PMSM parameter and load torque values, thus it is insensitive to model parameter and load torque variations. Simulation results are given to verify that the proposed method can be successfully used to control a chaotic PMSM under model parameter and load torque variations.

This paper proposes an intelligent quadratic optimal control scheme via linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach for the synchronization of uncertain chaotic systems with both external disturbances and parametric perturbations. First, a four-layered neural fuzzy network (NFN) identifier is constructed to estimate system nonlinear dynamics. Based on the NFN identifier, an intelligent quadratic optimal controller is developed with robust hybrid control scheme, in which H ?? optimal control and variable structure control (VSC) are embedded to attenuate the effects of external disturbances and parametric perturbations. The adaptive tuning laws of network parameters are derived in the sense of the Lyapunov synthesis approach to ensure network convergence, and the sufficient criterion for existence of the controller is formulated in the linear matrix inequality (LMI) form to guarantee the quadratic optimal synchronization performance. Finally, a numerical simulation example is illustrated by the chaotic Chua??s circuit system to demonstrate the effectiveness of our scheme.

High precision motion control of permanent magnet linear motors (PMLMs) is limited by undesired nonlinear dynamics, parameter variations, and unstructured uncertainties. To tackle these problems, this paper presents a neural-network-based adaptive robust precision motion control scheme for PMLMs. The presented controller contains a robust feedback controller and an adaptive compensator. The robust controller is designed based on the robust integral of the sign of the error method, and the adaptive compensator consists of a neural network component and a parametric component. Moreover, a composite learning law is designed for the parameter adaption in the compensator to further enhance the control performance. Rigorous stability analysis is provided by using the Lyapunov theory, and asymptotic tracking is theoretically achieved. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by comparative simulations and experiments on a PMLM-driven motion stage.

In this paper, a multi-input multi-output Takagi–Sugeno (T–S) fuzzy model is proposed to represent the nonlinear model of micro-electro mechanical systems (MEMS) gyroscope and improve the tracking and compensation performance. A robust adaptive sliding mode control with on-line identification for the upper bounds of external disturbances and an adaptive estimator for the model uncertainty parameters are proposed in the Lyapunov framework. The adaptive algorithm of model uncertainty parameters could compensate the error between the optimal T–S model and the designed T–S model, and decrease the chattering of the sliding surface. Based on Lyapunov methods, these adaptive laws can guarantee that the system is asymptotically stable. For the purpose of comparison, the designed controller is also implemented on the nonlinear model of MEMS gyroscope. Numerical simulations are investigated to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme on the T–S model and the nonlinear model.

This paper presents a robust nonlinear control strategy to deal with the trajectory tracking control problem for a laboratory helicopter. The helicopter model is considered as a nominal one with uncertainties such as unmodeled nonlinear dynamics, parametric uncertainties, and external disturbances. The proposed control approach incorporates the feedback linearization technique (FLT) and the signal compensation technique. The FLT is first applied to achieve the linearization of the nominal nonlinear model for reducing the conservation of the robust compensator design. A nominal controller based on the linear quadratic regulation method is designed for the linearized nominal system, whereas a robust compensator is introduced to restrain the influences of the uncertainties. It is shown that the trajectory tracking errors of the closed-loop system are ultimately bounded, and the boundaries can be specified by choosing the controller parameters. Simulation and experimental results on the lab helicopter verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper presents compliance characteristics of antagonistic actuation by the pair of Mckibben pneumatic artificial muscles and force tracking using a sliding control scheme for safe human-robot interaction. The variable stiffness capability of artificial muscles was investigated carefully by resilience tests from a biased initial position and impact tests based on an intended collision between a stationary object and a rotating linkage actuated by pneumatic artificial muscles. Considering the frequency response analysis of a whole pneumatic circuit for artificial muscles, a sliding control system was designed to control contacting force between a linkage actuated by artificial muscles and a rigid environment. Experimental results showed that the proposed force control scheme gave better tracking performance under model uncertainties due to air flow than the conventional PID controller whose feedback gains were well-tuned experimentally.

A robust attitude tracking control scheme for spacecraft formation flying is presented. The leader spacecraft with a rapid mobile antenna and a camera is modeled. While the camera is tracking the ground target, the antenna is tracking the follower spacecraft. By an angular velocity constraint and an angular constraint, two methods are proposed to compute the reference attitude profiles of the camera and antenna, respectively. To simplify the control design problem, this paper first derives the desired inverse system (DIS), which can convert the attitude tracking problem of 3D space into the regulator problem. Based on DIS and sliding mode control (SMC), a robust attitude tracking controller is developed in the presence of mass parameter uncertainties and external disturbance. By Lyapunov stability theory, the closed loop system stability can be achieved. The numerical simulations show that the proposed robust control scheme exhibits significant advantages for the multi-target attitude tracking of a two-spacecraft formation.

This paper presents a novel discrete adaptive fuzzy controller for electrically driven robot manipulators. It addresses how to overcome the nonlinearity, uncertainties, discretizing error and approximation error of the fuzzy system for asymptotic tracking control of robotic manipulators. The proposed controller is model-free in the form of discrete Mamdani fuzzy controller. The parameters of fuzzy controller are adaptively tuned using an adaptive mechanism derived by stability analysis. A robust control term is used to compensate the approximation error of the fuzzy system for asymptotic tracking of a desired trajectory. The controller is robust against all uncertainties associated with the robot manipulator and actuators. It is easy to implement since it requires only the joint position feedback. Compared with fuzzy controllers which employ all states to guarantee stability, the proposed controller is very simpler. Stability analysis and simulation results show its efficiency in the tracking control.
