The process of single liquid drop impact on thin liquid surface is numerically simulated with moving particle semi‐implicit method. The mathematical model involves gravity, viscosity and surface tension. The model is validated by the simulation of the experimental cases. It is found that the dynamic processes after impact are sensitive to the liquid pool depth and the initial drop velocity. In the cases that the initial drop velocity is low, the drop will be merged with the liquid pool and no big splash is seen. If the initial drop velocity is high enough, the dynamic process depends on the liquid depth. If the liquid film is very thin, a bowl‐shaped thin crown is formed immediately after the impact. The total crown subsequently expands outward and breaks into many tiny droplets. When the thickness of the liquid film increases, the direction of the liquid crown becomes normal to the surface and the crown propagates outward. It is also found that the radius of the crown is described by a square function of time: rC = [c(t ? t0)]0.5. When the liquid film is thick enough, a crown and a deep cavity inside it are formed shortly after the impact. The bottom of the cavity is initially oblate and then the base grows downward to form a sharp corner and subsequently the corner moves downward. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An enhancement of an existing tribometer device developed by Philippon et al. (Wear 257:777–784, 2004) is presented in this work. This experimental device is made up of a dynamometer ring and a specific load sensor allowing to apply an apparent normal force on specimens and to measure frictional forces respectively. A set of strain gauges are added to the upgraded dynamometer ring in this new configuration. The apparent normal force can be recorded accurately during the sliding process. The setup is adapted on a hydraulic testing machine to carry out steel-on-steel dry sliding tests. The first set of standard Steel on standard Steel specimens (XC 38 French standard steel) with two apparent normal pressures are imposed (8 and 80 MPa) as the range of sliding velocities varies from 0.12 to 3.72 m/s for the same contact conditions. The main set of experiments with low sliding velocities (varying from 0 to 3 m/s) for the Steel 1080 on Steel VascoMax are performed in the same tested setup. The recordings of normal and tangential forces leading to the friction coefficient determination are discussed. The values of dry friction coefficient μ according to the experimental parameters are in good agreement with those observed in the literature. Using this new configuration, the effects of the sliding velocity on the surface roughness changes and on the dry fiction coefficient are also investigated. Additionally the surface roughness changes are also investigated. Performing the scans with use of the scanning electron microscope in particular locations of the specimens show the roughness decrease and reveal the occurrence of the wear phenomenon. Moreover, very interesting relations between wear and sliding velocity are observed.  相似文献

The volume of fluid (VOF) method is used to perform two‐phase simulations (gas–liquid). The governing Navier–Stokes conservation equations of the flow field are numerically solved on two‐dimensional axisymmetric or three‐dimensional unstructured grids, using Cartesian velocity components, following the finite volume approximation and a pressure correction method. A new method of adaptive grid local refinement is developed in order to enhance the accuracy of the predictions, to capture the sharp gas–liquid interface and to speed up the calculations. Results are compared with experimental measurements in order to assess the efficiency of the method. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A 3-D free surface flow in open channels based on the Reynolds equations with thek-ε turbulence closure model is presented in this paper. Insted of the “rigid lid” approximation, the solution of the free surface equation is implemented in the velocity—pressure iterative procedure on the basis of the conventional SIMPLE method. This model was used to compute the flow in rectangular channels with trenches dredged across the bottom. The velocity, eddy viscosity coefficient, turbulent shear stress, turbulent kinetic energy and elevation of the free surface can be obtained. The computed results are in good agreement with previous experimental data.  相似文献

Theoretical and experimental data which make it possible to find the flow-rate, momentum and energy of the fluid that enters the lower pool after a discontinuity breakdown (dam break) in a rectangular channel with an even bottom, a step (sharp downstream rise in the bottom), a shelf (sharp drop in the bottom), and a threshold on the bottom are presented.  相似文献

Turbulent plane boundary layer flows of an incompressible fluid are considered. A refinement of the known Coles wake law is proposed. This refinement makes it possible to ensure the smooth matching of the turbulent boundary layer velocity profile with the outer flow and to extend the range of validity of the law to the case of large positive pressure gradients. The accuracy of the analytical approximation obtained is verified by comparison with the known experimental equilibrium velocity profiles. Using the approximation proposed, a relation for calculating the cross-sectional distribution of the Reynolds stress in the equilibrium boundary layer is derived. The pressure distributions for which the equilibrium turbulent boundary layer flows are single- and two-valued are distinguished.__________Translated from Izvestiya Rossiiskoi Academii Nauk, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 2, 2005, pp. 89–101.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by Mikhailov.  相似文献

A two‐dimensional depth‐integrated numerical model is developed using a fourth‐order Boussinesq approximation for an arbitrary time‐variable bottom boundary and is applied for submarine‐landslide‐generated waves. The mathematical formulation of model is an extension of (4,4) Padé approximant for moving bottom boundary. The mathematical formulations are derived based on a higher‐order perturbation analysis using the expanded form of velocity components. A sixth‐order multi‐step finite difference method is applied for spatial discretization and a sixth‐order Runge–Kutta method is applied for temporal discretization of the higher‐order depth‐integrated governing equations and boundary conditions. The present model is validated using available three‐dimensional experimental data and a good agreement is obtained. Moreover, the present higher‐order model is compared with fully potential three‐dimensional models as well as Boussinesq‐type multi‐layer models in several cases and the differences are discussed. The high accuracy of the present numerical model in considering the nonlinearity effects and frequency dispersion of waves is proven particularly for waves generated in intermediate and deeper water area. A direct method is proposed for verification of the quality of the method of measurements of the characteristics of free self-similar turbulent flows (the longitudinal mean velocity and the components of the tensor of the turbulent stresses), consisting in the direct substitution of experimentally obtained distributions of the longitudinal mean velocity and the turbulent stresses into the Reynolds equations. Using the proposed method, a lack of consistency is observed in the experimental data for the self-similar sections of plane [1] and axisymmetric [2] jets in a flooded space.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 6, pp. 161–164, November–December, 1978.The authors thank V. This paper presents the results of theoretical and experimental studies of open-channel waves generated by the propagation of a discontinuous dam-break wave over a bottom step. The cases where the initial tailwater level is higher than the step height (the step is under water) and where this value is smaller than the step height (at the initial time, water is absent on the step) are considered. Exact solutions are constructed using modified first-approximation equations of shallow-water theory, which admit the propagation of discontinuous waves in a dry channel. On the stationary hydraulic jump formed above the bottom step, the total free-stream energy is assumed to be conserved. These solutions agree with experimental data on various parameters (types of waves, wave propagation velocity, asymptotic depths behind the wave fronts). __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika i Tekhnicheskaya Fizika, Vol. 49, No. 1, pp. 31–44, January–February, 2008.  相似文献

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of bottom wall heating on the flow structure inside a horizontal square channel at low Reynolds numbers (Re) and high Grashof numbers (Gr). The flow field was found to be complex and three-dimensional due to the interactions of buoyancy-induced rising plumes of warm fluid, falling parcels of cold fluid and the shear flow. The mean streamwise velocity profiles were altered by bottom wall heating; and back flow was induced in the upper half of the channel when Gr/Re2 > 55. The bottom wall temperatures were found to have more significant influence on the turbulent velocity magnitudes than the flow rate. The Reynolds stress became negative in the channel core region indicating the momentum transfer from the turbulent velocity field to the buoyancy field. The POD analysis revealed the presence of convective cells primarily in the lower half of the channel.  相似文献
