Particle image velocimetry (PIV) has been used to investigate transitional and turbulent flow in a randomly packed bed of mono-sized transparent spheres at particle Reynolds number, \(20<{{ Re}}_{\mathrm{p}}< 3220\). The refractive index of the liquid is matched with the spheres to provide optical access to the flow within the bed without distortions. Integrated pressure drop data yield that Darcy law is valid at \({{ Re}}_{\mathrm{p}} \approx 80\). The PIV measurements show that the velocity fluctuations increase and that the time-averaged velocity distribution start to change at lower \({{ Re}}_{\mathrm{p}}\). The probability for relatively low and high velocities decreases with \({{ Re}}_{\mathrm{p}}\) and recirculation zones that appear in inertia dominated flows are suppressed by the turbulent flow at higher \({{ Re}}_{\mathrm{p}}\). Hence there is a maximum of recirculation at about \({{ Re}}_{\mathrm{p}} \approx 400\). Finally, statistical analysis of the spatial distribution of time-averaged velocities shows that the velocity distribution is clearly and weakly self-similar with respect to \({{ Re}}_{\mathrm{p}}\) for turbulent and laminar flow, respectively.  相似文献

Stereoscopic particle image velocimetry has been used to investigate inertia dominated, transitional and turbulent flow in a randomly packed bed of monosized PMMA spheres. By using an index-matched fluid, the bed is optically transparent and measurements can be performed in an arbitrary position within the porous bed. The velocity field observations are carried out for particle Reynolds numbers, \({Re}_{{p}}\), between 20 and 3220, and the sampling is done at a frequency of 75 Hz. Results show that, in porous media, the dynamics of the flow can vary significantly from pore to pore. At \({Re}_{{p}}\) around 400 the spatially averaged time fluctuations of total velocity reach a maximum and the spatial variation of the time-averaged total velocity, \(u_\mathrm{tot}\) increases up to about the same \({Re}_{{p}}\) and then it decreases. Also in the studied planes, a considerable amount of the fluid moves in the perpendicular directions to the main flow direction and the time-averaged magnitude of the velocity in the main direction, \(u_{x}\), has an averaged minimum of 40% of the magnitude of \(u_\mathrm{tot}\) at \({Re}_{{p}}\) about 400. For \({Re}_{{p}} > 1600\), this ratio is nearly constant and \(u_{x}\) is on average a little bit less than 50% of \(u_\mathrm{tot}\). The importance of the results for longitudinal and transverse dispersion is discussed.  相似文献

In this paper, a cluster model in particle flow code was used to simulate granite specimens after heat treatment under uniaxial compression. The results demonstrated that micro-cracks are randomly distributed in the specimen when the temperature is below 300?C, and have partial coalescence when the temperature is up to 450?C, then form macro-cracks when the temperature is above 600?C. There is more inter-granular cracking than intra-granular cracking, and their ratio increases with increasing temperature. The micro-cracks are almost constant when the temperature decreases from 900?C to room temperature, except for quartz α–β phase transition temperature(573?C). The fracture evolution process is obviously affected by these cracks, especially at 600–900?C. Elevated temperature leads to easily developed displacement between the grains, and the capacity to store strain energy becomes weaker, corresponding to the plasticity of granite after heat treatment.  相似文献

We prove global well-posedness for instationary Navier–Stokes equations with initial data in Besov space \({B^{0}_{n,\infty}(\Omega)}\) in whole and half space, and bounded domains of \({{\mathbb R}^{n}}\), \({n \geq 3}\). To this end, we prove maximal \({L^{\infty}_{\gamma}}\) -regularity of the sectorial operators in some Banach spaces and, in particular, maximal \({L^{\infty}_{\gamma}}\) -regularity of the Stokes operator in little Nikolskii spaces \({b^{s}_{q,\infty}(\Omega)}\), \({s \in (-1, 2)}\), which are of independent significance. Then, based on the maximal regularity results and \({b^{s_{1}}_{q_{1},\infty}-B^{s_{2}}_{q_{2,1}}}\) estimates of the Stokes semigroups, we prove global well-posedness for Navier–Stokes equations under smallness condition on \({\|u_{0}\|_{B^{0}_{n,\infty}(\Omega)}}\) via a fixed point argument using Banach fixed point theorem.  相似文献

In (Isett, Regularity in time along the coarse scale flow for the Euler equations, 2013), the first author proposed a strengthening of Onsager’s conjecture on the failure of energy conservation for incompressible Euler flows with Hölder regularity not exceeding \({1/3}\). This stronger form of the conjecture implies that anomalous dissipation will fail for a generic Euler flow with regularity below the Onsager critical space \({L_t^\infty B_{3,\infty}^{1/3}}\) due to low regularity of the energy profile. This paper is the first and main paper in a series of two, the results of which may be viewed as first steps towards establishing the conjectured failure of energy regularity for generic solutions with Hölder exponent less than \({1/5}\). The main result of the present paper shows that any given smooth Euler flow can be perturbed in \({C^{1/5-\epsilon}_{t,x}}\) on any pre-compact subset of \({\mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{R}^3}\) to violate energy conservation. Furthermore, the perturbed solution is no smoother than \({C^{1/5-\epsilon}_{t,x}}\). As a corollary of this theorem, we show the existence of nonzero \({C^{1/5-\epsilon}_{t,x}}\) solutions to Euler with compact space-time support, generalizing previous work of the first author (Isett, Hölder continuous Euler flows in three dimensions with compact support in time, 2012) to the nonperiodic setting.  相似文献

In this paper, uniaxial compression tests were carried out on a series of composite rock specimens with different dip angles, which were made from two types of rock-like material with different strength. The acoustic emission technique was used to monitor the acoustic signal characteristics of composite rock specimens during the entire loading process. At the same time, an optical non-contact 3 D digital image correlation technique was used to study the evolution of axial strain field and the maximal strain field before and after the peak strength at different stress levels during the loading process. The effect of bedding plane inclination on the deformation and strength during uniaxial loading was analyzed. The methods of solving the elastic constants of hard and weak rock were described. The damage evolution process, deformation and failure mechanism, and failure mode during uniaxial loading were fully determined. The experimental results show that the θ = 0?–45?specimens had obvious plastic deformation during loading, and the brittleness of the θ = 60?–90?specimens gradually increased during the loading process. When the anisotropic angle θincreased from 0?to 90?, the peak strength, peak strain, and apparent elastic modulus all decreased initially and then increased. The failure mode of the composite rock specimen during uniaxial loading can be divided into three categories:tensile fracture across the discontinuities(θ = 0?–30?), slid-ing failure along the discontinuities(θ = 45?–75?), and tensile-split along the discontinuities(θ = 90?). The axial strain of the weak and hard rock layers in the composite rock specimen during the loading process was significantly different from that of the θ = 0?–45?specimens and was almost the same as that of the θ = 60?–90?specimens. As for the strain localization highlighted in the maximum principal strain field, the θ = 0?–30?specimens appeared in the rock matrix approximately parallel to the loading direction, while in the θ = 45?–90?specimens it appeared at the hard and weak rock layer interface.  相似文献

Regarding P.-L. Lions’ open question in Oxford Lecture Series in Mathematics and its Applications, Vol. 3 (1996) concerning the propagation of regularity for the density patch, we establish the global existence of solutions to the two-dimensional inhomogeneous incompressible Navier–Stokes system with initial density given by \({(1 - \eta){\bf 1}_{{\Omega}_{0}} + {\bf 1}_{{\Omega}_{0}^{c}}}\) for some small enough constant \({\eta}\) and some \({W^{k+2,p}}\) domain \({\Omega_{0}}\), with initial vorticity belonging to \({L^{1} \cap L^{p}}\) and with appropriate tangential regularities. Furthermore, we prove that the regularity of the domain \({\Omega_0}\) is preserved by time evolution.  相似文献

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the resolvents \({(\mathcal{A}^\varepsilon+I)^{-1}}\) of elliptic second-order differential operators \({{\mathcal{A}}^\varepsilon}\) in \({\mathbb{R}^d}\) with periodic rapidly oscillating coefficients, as the period \({\varepsilon}\) goes to zero. The class of operators covered by our analysis includes both the “classical” case of uniformly elliptic families (where the ellipticity constant does not depend on \({\varepsilon}\)) and the “double-porosity” case of coefficients that take contrasting values of order one and of order \({\varepsilon^2}\) in different parts of the period cell. We provide a construction for the leading order term of the “operator asymptotics” of \({(\mathcal{A}^\varepsilon+I)^{-1}}\) in the sense of operator-norm convergence and prove order \({O(\varepsilon)}\) remainder estimates.  相似文献

Let \({S\subset\mathbb{R}^2}\) be a bounded Lipschitz domain and denote by \({W^{2,2}_{\text{iso}}(S; \mathbb{R}^3)}\) the set of mappings \({u\in W^{2,2}(S;\mathbb{R}^3)}\) which satisfy \({(\nabla u)^T(\nabla u) = Id}\) almost everywhere. Under an additional regularity condition on the boundary \({\partial S}\) (which is satisfied if \({\partial S}\) is piecewise continuously differentiable), we prove that the strong W 2,2 closure of \({W^{2,2}_{\text{iso}}(S; \mathbb{R}^3)\cap C^{\infty}(\overline{S};\mathbb{R}^3)}\) agrees with \({W^{2,2}_{\text{iso}}(S; \mathbb{R}^3)}\).  相似文献

We present fully resolved computations of flow over periodic hills at the hill-Reynolds numbers \(\text {Re}_{H}=?5{,}600\) and \(\text {Re}_{H}=?10{,}595\) with the highest fidelity to date. The calculations are performed using spectral incompressible discontinuous Galerkin schemes of \(8^{\text {th}}\) and \(7^{\text {th}}\) order spatial accuracy, \(3^{\text {rd}}\) order temporal accuracy, as well as 34 and 180 million grid points, respectively. We show that the remaining discretization error is small by comparing the results to h- and p-coarsened simulations. We quantify the statistical averaging error of the reattachment length, as this quantity is widely used as an ‘error norm’ in comparing numerical schemes. The results exhibit good agreement with the experimental and numerical reference data, but the reattachment length at \(\text {Re}_{H}=?10{,}595\) is predicted slightly shorter than in the most widely used LES references. In the second part of this paper, we show the broad range of capabilities of the numerical method by assessing the scheme for underresolved simulations (implicit large-eddy simulation) of the higher Reynolds number in a detailed h/p convergence study.  相似文献

The presence of a finite tangential velocity on a hydrodynamically slipping surface is known to reduce vorticity production in bluff body flows substantially while at the same time enhancing its convection downstream and into the wake. Here, we investigate the effect of hydrodynamic slippage on the convective heat transfer (scalar transport) from a heated isothermal circular cylinder placed in a uniform cross-flow of an incompressible fluid through analytical and simulation techniques. At low Reynolds (\({\textit{Re}}\ll 1\)) and high Péclet (\({\textit{Pe}}\gg 1\)) numbers, our theoretical analysis based on Oseen and thermal boundary layer equations allows for an explicit determination of the dependence of the thermal transport on the non-dimensional slip length \(l_s\). In this case, the surface-averaged Nusselt number, Nu transitions gradually between the asymptotic limits of \(Nu \sim {\textit{Pe}}^{1/3}\) and \(Nu \sim {\textit{Pe}}^{1/2}\) for no-slip (\(l_s \rightarrow 0\)) and shear-free (\(l_s \rightarrow \infty \)) boundaries, respectively. Boundary layer analysis also shows that the scaling \(Nu \sim {\textit{Pe}}^{1/2}\) holds for a shear-free cylinder surface in the asymptotic limit of \({\textit{Re}}\gg 1\) so that the corresponding heat transfer rate becomes independent of the fluid viscosity. At finite \({\textit{Re}}\), results from our two-dimensional simulations confirm the scaling \(Nu \sim {\textit{Pe}}^{1/2}\) for a shear-free boundary over the range \(0.1 \le {\textit{Re}}\le 10^3\) and \(0.1\le {\textit{Pr}}\le 10\). A gradual transition from the lower asymptotic limit corresponding to a no-slip surface, to the upper limit for a shear-free boundary, with \(l_s\), is observed in both the maximum slip velocity and the Nu. The local time-averaged Nusselt number \(Nu_{\theta }\) for a shear-free surface exceeds the one for a no-slip surface all along the cylinder boundary except over the downstream portion where unsteady separation and flow reversal lead to an appreciable rise in the local heat transfer rates, especially at high \({\textit{Re}}\) and Pr. At a Reynolds number of \(10^3\), the formation of secondary recirculating eddy pairs results in appearance of additional local maxima in \(Nu_{\theta }\) at locations that are in close proximity to the mean secondary stagnation points. As a consequence, Nu exhibits a non-monotonic variation with \(l_s\) increasing initially from its lowermost value for a no-slip surface and then decreasing before rising gradually toward the upper asymptotic limit for a shear-free cylinder. A non-monotonic dependence of the spanwise-averaged Nu on \(l_s\) is observed in three dimensions as well with the three-dimensional wake instabilities that appear at sufficiently low \(l_s\), strongly influencing the convective thermal transport from the cylinder. The analogy between heat transfer and single-component mass transfer implies that our results can directly be applied to determine the dependency of convective mass transfer of a single solute on hydrodynamic slip length in similar configurations through straightforward replacement of Nu and \({\textit{Pr}}\) with Sherwood and Schmidt numbers, respectively.  相似文献

We look at the effective Hamiltonian \({\overline{H}}\) associated with the Hamiltonian \({H(p,x)=H(p)+V(x)}\) in the periodic homogenization theory. Our central goal is to understand the relation between \({V}\) and \({\overline{H}}\). We formulate some inverse problems concerning this relation. Such types of inverse problems are, in general, very challenging. In this paper, we discuss several special cases in both convex and nonconvex settings.  相似文献

We establish the existence and stability of subsonic potential flow for the steady Euler–Poisson system in a multidimensional nozzle of a finite length when prescribing the electric potential difference on a non-insulated boundary from a fixed point at the exit, and prescribing the pressure at the exit of the nozzle. The Euler–Poisson system for subsonic potential flow can be reduced to a nonlinear elliptic system of second order. In this paper, we develop a technique to achieve a priori \({C^{1,\alpha}}\) estimates of solutions to a quasi-linear second order elliptic system with mixed boundary conditions in a multidimensional domain enclosed by a Lipschitz continuous boundary. In particular, we discovered a special structure of the Euler–Poisson system which enables us to obtain \({C^{1,\alpha}}\) estimates of the velocity potential and the electric potential functions, and this leads us to establish structural stability of subsonic flows for the Euler–Poisson system under perturbations of various data.  相似文献

This numerical study describes the eddy emergence and transformations in a slow steady axisymmetric air–water flow, driven by a rotating top disk in a vertical conical container. As water height \(H_{\mathrm{w}}\) and cone half-angle \(\beta \) vary, numerous flow metamorphoses occur. They are investigated for \(\beta =30^{\circ }, 45^{\circ }\), and \(60^{\circ }\). For small \(H_{\mathrm{w}}\), the air flow is multi-cellular with clockwise meridional circulation near the disk. The air flow becomes one cellular as \(H_{\mathrm{w}}\) exceeds a threshold depending on \(\beta \). For all \(\beta \), the water flow has an unbounded number of eddies whose size and strength diminish as the cone apex is approached. As the water level becomes close to the disk, the outmost water eddy with clockwise meridional circulation expands, reaches the interface, and induces a thin layer with anticlockwise circulation in the air. Then this layer expands and occupies the entire air domain. The physical reasons for the flow transformations are provided. The results are of fundamental interest and can be relevant for aerial bioreactors.  相似文献

This study investigated the physical clogging of uniformly graded porous media under constant flow rates using natural porous media and suspensions. The porous media selected for this experimental study was a fine-to-medium sandy soil fractioned into thirteen uniformly graded beds: seven unisize beds and six uniform beds. The physical clogging of the beds was studied using two types of silt suspensions as along with two suspension concentrations and three water discharges. It was found that the permeability reduction due to physical clogging \([(K_\mathrm{i} - K_\mathrm{t})/K_\mathrm{i}]\) increased with decreasing \({D}_{15}/{d}_{85}\) ratios until a critical value of \({D}_{15}/{d}_{85}\), after which a surface mat of suspension was formed on the porous media. It was also found that the value of reduced permeability at any time (at any number of pore volumes of injected suspension-laden water), \(K_\mathrm{t}\), is directly proportional to square of \({D}_{15}\) and inversely proportional to \({C}_{\mathrm{u}}\) of the porous media and \({d}_{85}\) of suspensions. The effects of suspension type and flow rates on physical clogging seemed to depend on the size of the pores in the porous media.  相似文献

In the present paper, we study the uniform regularity and vanishing dissipation limit for the full compressible Navier–Stokes system whose viscosity and heat conductivity are allowed to vanish at different orders. The problem is studied in a three dimensional bounded domain with Navier-slip type boundary conditions. It is shown that there exists a unique strong solution to the full compressible Navier–Stokes system with the boundary conditions in a finite time interval which is independent of the viscosity and heat conductivity. The solution is uniformly bounded in \({W^{1,\infty}}\) and is a conormal Sobolev space. Based on such uniform estimates, we prove the convergence of the solutions of the full compressible Navier–Stokes to the corresponding solutions of the full compressible Euler system in \({L^\infty(0,T; L^2)}\), \({L^\infty(0,T; H^{1})}\) and \({L^\infty([0,T]\times\Omega)}\) with a rate of convergence.  相似文献

The massively separated flows over a realistic aircraft configuration at 40?, 50?, and 60?angles of attack are studied using the delayed detached eddy simulation(DDES).The calculations are carried out at experimental conditions corresponding to a mean aerodynamic chord-based Reynolds number of 8.93 × 10~5 and Mach number of 0.088. The influence of the grid size is investigated using two grids, 20.0×10~6cells and 31.0 × 10~6 cells. At the selected conditions, the lift, drag, and pitching moment from DDES predictions agree with the experimental data better than that from the Reynoldsaveraged Navier–Stokes. The effect of angle of attack on the flow structure over the general aircraft is also studied, and it is found that the dominated frequency associated with the vortex shedding process decreases with increasing angle of attack.  相似文献

Particle image velocimetry (PIV) has been significantly advanced since its conception in early 1990s. With the advancement of imaging modalities, applications of 2D PIV have far expanded into biology and medicine. One example is echocardiographic particle image velocimetry that is used for in vivo mapping of the flow inside the heart chambers with opaque boundaries. Velocimetry methods can help better understanding the biomechanical problems. The current trend is to develop three-dimensional velocimetry techniques that take advantage of modern medical imaging tools. This study provides a novel framework for validation of velocimetry methods that are inherently three dimensional such as but not limited to those acquired by 3D echocardiography machines. This framework creates 3D synthetic fields based on a known 3D velocity field \({\mathbf{V}}\) and a given 3D brightness field \({\mathbf{B}}\). The method begins with computing the inverse flow \({\mathbf{V}}^{\varvec{*}} \) based on the velocity field \({\mathbf{V}}\). Then the transformation of \({\mathbf{B}}\), imposed by \({\mathbf{V}}\), is calculated using the computed inverse flow according to \({\mathbf{B}}^{\varvec{*}} \left( {\mathbf{x}} \right) = {\mathbf{B}}\left( {{\mathbf{x}} + {\mathbf{V}}^{\varvec{*}} \left( {\mathbf{x}} \right)} \right)\), where x is the coordinates of voxels in \({\mathbf{B}}^{\varvec{*}} \), with a 3D weighted average interpolation, which provides high accuracy, low memory requirement, and low computational time. To check the validity of the framework, we generate pairs of 3D brightness fields by employing Hill’s spherical vortex velocity field. \({\mathbf{B}}\) and the generated \({\mathbf{B}}^{\varvec{*}} \) are then processed by our in-house 3D particle image velocimetry software to obtain the interrelated velocity field. The results indicates that the computed and imposed velocity fields are in agreement.  相似文献

We consider the compressible Navier–Stokes equations for viscous and barotropic fluids with density dependent viscosity. The aim is to investigate mathematical properties of solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations using solutions of the pressureless Navier–Stokes equations, that we call quasi solutions. This regime corresponds to the limit of highly compressible flows. In this paper we are interested in proving the announced result in Haspot (Proceedings of the 14th international conference on hyperbolic problems held in Padova, pp 667–674, 2014) concerning the existence of global weak solution for the quasi-solutions, we also observe that for some choice of initial data (irrotationnal) the quasi solutions verify the porous media, the heat equation or the fast diffusion equations in function of the structure of the viscosity coefficients. In particular it implies that it exists classical quasi-solutions in the sense that they are \({C^{\infty}}\) on \({(0,T)\times \mathbb{R}^{N}}\) for any \({T > 0}\). Finally we show the convergence of the global weak solution of compressible Navier–Stokes equations to the quasi solutions in the case of a vanishing pressure limit process. In particular for highly compressible equations the speed of propagation of the density is quasi finite when the viscosity corresponds to \({\mu(\rho)=\rho^{\alpha}}\) with \({\alpha > 1}\). Furthermore the density is not far from converging asymptotically in time to the Barrenblatt solution of mass the initial density \({\rho_{0}}\).  相似文献

We consider the problem of characterizing the smooth, isometric deformations of a planar material region identified with an open, connected subset \({\mathcal{D}}\) of two-dimensional Euclidean point space \(\mathbb{E}^{2}\) into a surface \({\mathcal{S}}\) in three-dimensional Euclidean point space \(\mathbb{E}^{3}\). To be isometric, such a deformation must preserve the length of every possible arc of material points on \({\mathcal{D}}\). Characterizing the curves of zero principal curvature of \({\mathcal{S}}\) is of major importance. After establishing this characterization, we introduce a special curvilinear coordinate system in \(\mathbb{E}^{2}\), based upon an à priori chosen pre-image form of the curves of zero principal curvature in \({\mathcal{D}}\), and use that coordinate system to construct the most general isometric deformation of \({\mathcal{D}}\) to a smooth surface \({\mathcal{S}}\). A necessary and sufficient condition for the deformation to be isometric is noted and alternative representations are given. Expressions for the curvature tensor and potentially nonvanishing principal curvature of \({\mathcal{S}}\) are derived. A general cylindrical deformation is developed and two examples of circular cylindrical and spiral cylindrical form are constructed. A strategy for determining any smooth isometric deformation is outlined and that strategy is employed to determine the general isometric deformation of a rectangular material strip to a ribbon on a conical surface. Finally, it is shown that the representation established here is equivalent to an alternative previously established by Chen, Fosdick and Fried (J. Elast. 119:335–350, 2015).  相似文献
