This paper is concerned with the numerical simulation of the flow structure around a square cylinder in a uniform shear flow. The calculations were conducted by solving the unsteady 2D Navier–Stokes equations with a finite difference method. The effect of the shear parameter K of the approaching flow on the vortex-shedding Strouhal number and the force coefficients acting on the square cylinder is investigated in the range K=0·0–0·25 at various Reynolds numbers from 500 to 1500. The computational results are compared with some existing experimental data and previous studies. The effect of shear rate on the Strouhal number and the force acting on the cylinder has a tendency to reduce the oscillation. The Strouhal number, mean drag and amplitude of the fluctuating force tend to decrease as the shear rate increases, but show no significant change at low shear rate. Increasing the Reynolds number decreases the Strouhal number and increases the force acting on the cylinder. At high shear rate the shedding frequencies of the fluctuating drag and lift coefficients are identical. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Confined aspect-ratio of 6 wavy cylinders with a mean blockage-ratio of 0.5 were studied using time-resolved particle-image velocimetry at a sub-critical Reynolds number of 2700. Wavelengths and wave amplitudes of 2–4 and 0.1–0.3 mean diameters respectively were investigated. Results show that vortices are generally shed from the wavy cylinder and channel walls regularly, reminiscent of the unsteady symmetric flow configuration in confined non-wavy cylinders. Furthermore, vortex formation lengths for confined wavy cylinders are generally shorter than their unconfined counterparts, though their variations with respect to geometrical changes remain consistent with unconfined flow conditions. Gross cross-stream flow behaviour does not differ significantly between confined and unconfined wavy cylinders, indicating that finite-length effects are independent of the present confinement. Confined wavy cylinder wake regions are more sensitive towards geometrical changes and a combination of small wavelength and large wave amplitude leads to significant suppression of coherent cylinder and wall vortex-shedding. This is supported by phase-averaged flow reconstructions derived from Proper Orthogonal Decomposition analysis. Lastly, larger wave amplitudes lead to redistributions of dominant flow energy further downstream and to higher mode numbers, which suggests a causal link to the formation of stronger and more coherent streamwise vortices.  相似文献

Three-dimensional Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) are performed to investigate the shear effects on flow around a circular cylinder at Reynolds numbers of Re=60–1000. The shear parameter, β, which is based on the velocity gradient, cylinder diameter and upstream mean velocity at the center plane of the cylinder, varies from 0 to 0.30. Variations of Strouhal number, drag and lift coefficients, and unsteady wake structures with shear parameter are studied, along with their dependence on Reynolds number. The presented simulation provides detailed information for the flow field around a circular cylinder in shear flow. This study shows that the Strouhal number exhibits no significant variation with shear parameter. The stagnation point moves to the high-velocity side almost linearly with shear parameter, and this result mainly influences the aerodynamic forces acting on a circular cylinder in shear flow. Both the Reynolds number and shear parameter influence the movement of the stagnation point and separation point. Mode A wake instability is suppressed into parallel vortex shedding mode at a certain shear parameter. The lift force increases with increasing shear parameter and acts from the high-velocity side to the low-velocity side. In addition, a simple method to estimate the lift force coefficient in shear flow is provided.  相似文献

An experimental study of the dynamic characteristics of flow past a two-dimensional circular cylinder is described. The fluctuationsoof wall shear stress, surface-pressure and velocity of the flow are measured with hot-film, hot-wire and pressure transducer. The frequency feature of fluctuations of wall shear stress is given. The cross-correlation functions of these fluctuations at any two points are calculated. The experimental results reveal that there is an overall syncronous fluctuation, at the shedding frequency, in boundary layer in the flow past a two-dimensional circular cylinder at subcritical Reynolds number.  相似文献

In this work, we present an experimental study of the wall confinement effect on the wake formation behind a circular cylinder of diameter dc=10 mm and of length Lc=30dc. The experiments were performed in a water tunnel with the dimensions (length=300dc, height=3dc, span Lc=30dc). The confinement rate was r=1/3 and the Reynolds number was in the range of 30–277. The experiments were done using 2-D PIV measurements. The first instability was delayed by the confinement and the von Kármán vortices characteristics are different from the unconfined case. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of the flow was used for a filtering purpose and to extract the energetic contribution of the different modes. A low-order representation of the flow, constructed from the first pair of modes in the well-defined region of the flow, shows that von Kármán vortices are equivalent to vanishing progressive waves. Measurements done above the cylinder show the presence of 3-D span instabilities showing great similarities with “Mode A” and “Mode B” found in the unconfined case.  相似文献

The flow characteristics of both confined and unconfined air jets, impinging normally onto a flat plate have been experimentally investigated. The mean and turbulence velocities, and surface pressures were measured for Reynolds numbers ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 and the nozzle-to-plate spacings in range of 0.2–6. Smoke-wire technique is used to visualize the flow behavior. The effects of Reynolds number, nozzle-to-plate spacing and flow confinement on the flow structure are reported. In the case of confined jet, subatmospheric regions occur on both impingement and confinement surfaces at nozzle-to-plate spacings up to 2 for all Reynolds numbers in consideration and they lie up to nearly the same radial location at both surfaces. However, there is no evidence of the subatmospheric region in unconfined jet. It is concluded that there exists a linkage among the subatmospheric region, turbulence intensity and the peaks in heat transfer coefficients for low spacings in impinging jets.  相似文献

Forced convection heat transfer from an unconfined circular cylinder in the steady cross-flow regime has been studied using a finite volume method (FVM) implemented on a Cartesian grid system in the range as 10 ≤ Re ≤ 45 and 0.7 ≤ Pr ≤ 400. The numerical results are used to develop simple correlations for Nusselt number as a function of the pertinent dimensionless variables. In addition to average Nusselt number, the effects of Re, Pr and thermal boundary conditions on the temperature field near the cylinder and on the local Nusselt number distributions have also been presented to provide further physical insights into the nature of the flow. The rate of heat transfer increases with an increase in the Reynolds and/or Prandtl numbers. The uniform heat flux condition always shows higher value of heat transfer coefficient than the constant wall temperature at the surface of the cylinder for the same Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. The maximum difference between the two values is around 15–20%.  相似文献

The purpose of the present work is to study the various specific time scales of the turbulent separating flow around a square cylinder, in order to determine the Reynolds number effect on the separating shear layer, where occurs a transition to turbulence. Unsteady analysis based on large eddy simulation (LES) at intermediate Reynolds numbers and laser doppler velocimetry (LDV) measurements at high Reynolds numbers are carried out. The Reynolds number, based on the cylinder diameter D and the inflow velocity U o , is ranging from Re?=?50 to Re?=?300,000. A special focus is performed on the coherent structures developing on the sides and in the wake of a square cylinder. For a large Reynolds number range above Re?≈?1,000, both signatures of Von Karman (VK) and Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) type vortical structures are found on velocity time samples. The combination of their frequency signature is studied based on Fourier and wavelet analysis. In the present study, We observe the occurrence of KH pairings in the separating shear layer on the side of the cylinder, and confirm the intermittency nature of such a shear flow. These issues concerning the structure of the near wake shear layer which were addressed for the round cylinder case in a recent experimental publication (Rajagopalan and Antonia, Exp Fluids 38:393–402, 2005) are of interest in the present flow configuration as well.  相似文献

A detailed experimental study is performed on the separated flow structures around a low aspect-ratio circular cylinder (pin-fin) in a practical configuration of liquid cooling channel. Distinctive features of the present arrangement are the confinement of the cylinder at both ends, water flow at low Reynolds numbers (Re = 800, 1800, 2800), very high core flow turbulence and undeveloped boundary layers at the position of the obstacle. The horseshoe vortex system at the junctions between the cylinder and the confining walls and the near wake region behind the obstacle are deeply investigated by means of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Upstream of the cylinder, the horseshoe vortex system turns out to be perturbed by vorticity bursts from the incoming boundary layers, leading to aperiodical vortex oscillations at Re = 800 or to break-away and secondary vorticity eruptions at the higher Reynolds numbers. The flow structures in the near wake show a complex three-dimensional behaviour associated with a peculiar mechanism of spanwise mass transport. High levels of free-stream turbulence trigger an early instabilization of the shear layers and strong Bloor–Gerrard vortices are observed even at Re = 800. Coalescence of these vortices and intense spanwise flow inhibit the alternate primary vortex shedding for time periods whose length and frequency increase as the Reynolds number is reduced. The inhibition of alternate vortex shedding for long time periods is finally related to the very large wake characteristic lengths and to the low velocity fluctuations observed especially at the lowest Reynolds number.  相似文献

This paper presents results obtained from a numerical simulation of a two-dimensional (2-D) incompressible linear shear flow over a square cylinder. Numerical simulations are performed, using the lattice Boltzmann method, in the ranges of 50⩽Re⩽200 and 0⩽K⩽0.5, where Re and K are the Reynolds number and the shear rate, respectively. The effect of the shear rate on the frequency of vortex shedding from the cylinder, and the lift and drag forces exerted on the cylinder are quantified together with the flow patterns around the cylinder. The present results show that vortex structure behind the cylinder is strongly dependant on both the shear rate and Reynolds number. When Re=50, a small K can disturb the steady state and cause an alternative vortex shedding with uneven intensity. In contrast, a large value of K will suppress the vortex shedding from the cylinder. When Re>50, the differences in the strength and size of vortices shed from the upper and lower sides of the cylinder become more pronounced as K increases. Vortex shedding disappears when K is larger than a critical value, which depends on Re. The flow patterns around the cylinder for different Re tend towards self-similarity with increasing K. The lift and drag forces exerted on the cylinder, in general, decrease with increasing K. Unlike a shear flow past a circular cylinder, the vortex shedding frequency past a square cylinder decreases with increasing the shear rate. A significant reduction of the drag force occurs in the range 0.15<K<0.3.

The effect of Reynolds number on the flow development upstream of a rigid, non-porous, static fence is investigated experimentally. The flow field is measured using time-resolved, two-component particle image velocimetry at Reynolds numbers based on fence height of 18000, 36000, and 54000. The results show that a laminar separation bubble forms upstream of the junction vortex at the base of the fence. The mean extent of the bubble decreases with increasing Reynolds number, with mean separation moving downstream and mean reattachment moving upstream. In the aft portion of the bubble, shear layer vortices form and are shed at scaled frequencies and wavelengths that are comparable to laminar separation bubble shedding in low Reynolds number airfoils and flat plates with an imposed adverse pressure gradient. The strong periodicity of the associated coherent structures and the proximity of shear layer roll-up relative to the fence should be taken into consideration in the relevant designs due to potential implications to structural loading. A simple flow separation prediction model combining inviscid fence flow solution with Thwaites’ method is introduced and shows good agreement with the experimental results for the Reynolds number range considered.  相似文献

An unsteady two-dimensional numerical simulation is performed to investigate the forced convection heat transfer for flow past a long heated equilateral triangular cylinder in an unconfined medium for the low Reynolds number laminar regime. The Reynolds number considered in this study ranges from 50 to 250 with three different values of Prandtl number (Pr?=?0.71, 7 and 100). Fictitious confining boundaries are chosen on the lateral sides of the computational domain that makes the blockage ratio β?=?5?% in order to make the problem computationally feasible. An unstructured triangular mesh is used for the computational domain discretization and the simulation is carried out with the commercial CFD solver Fluent. The flow and heat transfer characteristics are analyzed with the streamline and isotherm patterns at various Reynolds numbers. The dimensionless frequency of vortex shedding (Strouhal number), drag coefficient and Nusselt numbers are presented and discussed. The results obtained are in good agreement with the available results in the literature.  相似文献

An experimental investigation of flow around a square cylinder placed at various angles with respect to the approach fluid velocity is reported. The focus of the study is toward examining the sensitivity of the wake properties to the cylinder orientation and Reynolds number. Angles of incidence in the range of 0-60° and Reynolds numbers of 1340, 4990, and 9980 have been considered. Velocity measurements have been carried out using an X-wire hotwire anemometer. The Strouhal number and the drag coefficient of the cylinder have been computed from the wake measurements. Utilizing the velocity traces at distinct probe locations in the near and the far wake, statistical properties such as the RMS velocities and the spectra have been obtained. Results obtained in the present work revealed that for a cylinder with zero inclination, flow separates from the corners on the face exposed to the incoming flow. For inclinations greater than zero, the points of separation on the cylinder move downstream and the wake size increases, but the separated shear layer rolls up over a shorter distance. These factors lead to a reduced drag coefficient and a higher Strouhal number. The center-line recovery of the time-averaged velocity and the decay rates of velocity fluctuations depend on the Reynolds number. A marginal effect of the cylinder orientation is also seen.  相似文献

Unsteady three-dimensional (3-D) numerical simulations of linear shear flow past a square cylinder at moderate Reynolds number (Re=200) are performed. The shear parameter (K) considered in this study is varied as 0.0, 0.1, and 0.2. For the uniform flow (K=0.0) case, the chosen Re falls in the transition Reynolds number range. The low frequency force pulsations of square cylinder transition phenomena are observed to decrease with increasing shear parameter. The evolution of streamwise vortical structures indicates a mode A spanwise instability in the uniform flow. Unlike in uniform flow, mixed mode A and mode B spanwise instability is observed in the case of a shear flow. The autocorrelation function of the lift and the drag coefficients is improved for any particular separation distance with increasing K.  相似文献

It is common knowledge that flow around bluff bodies exhibits oscillatory behaviour. The aim of the present study is to compute the steady two-dimensional flow around a square cylinder at different Reynolds numbers and to determine the onset of unsteadiness through a linear stability analysis of the steady flow. Stability of the steady flow to small two-dimensional perturbations is analysed by computing the evolution of these perturbations. An analysis of various time-stepping techniques is carried out to select the most appropriate technique for predicting the growth of the perturbations and hence the stability of the flow. The critical Reynolds number is determined from the growth rate of the perturbations. Computations are then made for periodic unsteady flow at a Reynolds number above the critical value. The predicted Strouhal number agrees well with experimental data. Heat transfer from the cylinder is also studied for the unsteady laminar flow.  相似文献

An experimental investigation was made of the flow over a grooved circular cylinder of different aspect ratios. Based on the drag coefficient, Strouhal number and mean shear stress, three flow regimes of subcritical, critical and supercritical were found, all of which are below the subcritical Reynolds number of a smooth cylinder. Boundary layer characteristics within the different flow regimes were measured. The shift of the boundary layer away from the grooves and an estimated change in the virtual origin are used to establish the similarity of the flow characteristics of grooved and smooth cylinders. Now at Development and Planning Division, Hong Kong Electric Co.
