The present investigation deals with the three‐dimensional flow of an Oldroyd‐B fluid over a stretching surface. The governing equations for the three‐dimensional flow are developed. Similarity transformations are invoked for the conversion of nonlinear partial differential equations into the coupled system of ordinary differential equations. Computations for the series solution are presented through implementation of homotopy analysis method. The salient features of the involved parameters have been pointed out. This paper looks at the unsteady three‐dimensional MHD flow of an elastico‐viscous fluid over a stretching surface. The analysis of mass transfer is also analyzed. The governing boundary layer equations are reduced into partial differential equations with three dependent variables through similarity transformations. The transformed system of equations is solved analytically by employing homotopy analysis method (HAM). Plots for various interesting parameters are presented and discussed. Numerical data for surface shear stresses and surface mass transfer in steady case are also tabulated. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A monotone, second‐order accurate numerical scheme is presented for solving the differential form of the adjoint shallow‐water equations in generalized two‐dimensional coordinates. Fluctuation‐splitting is utilized to achieve a high‐resolution solution of the equations in primitive form. One‐step and two‐step schemes are presented and shown to achieve solutions of similarly high accuracy in one dimension. However, the two‐step method is shown to yield more accurate solutions to problems in which unsteady wave speeds are present. In two dimensions, the two‐step scheme is tested in the context of two parameter identification problems, and it is shown to accurately transmit the information needed to identify unknown forcing parameters based on measurements of the system response. The first problem involves the identification of an upstream flood hydrograph based on downstream depth measurements. The second problem involves the identification of a long wave state in the far‐field based on near‐field depth measurements. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The MHD Falkner–Skan equation arises in the study of laminar boundary layers exhibiting similarity on the semi‐infinite domain. The proposed approach is equipped by the orthogonal Sinc functions that have perfect properties. This method solves the problem on the semi‐infinite domain without truncating it to a finite domain and transforming domain of the problem to a finite domain. In addition, the governing partial differential equations are transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations using similarity variables, and then they are solved numerically by the Sinc‐collocation method. It is shown that the Sinc‐collocation method converges to the solution at an exponential rate. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An analysis is performed to study the free convection of a dusty‐gas flow along a semi‐infinite isothermal vertical cylinder. The governing equations of the flow problem are transformed into non‐dimensional form and the resulting nonlinear, coupled parabolic partial differential equations have been solved numerically using an implicit finite difference scheme of Crank–Nicholson type. The flow variables such as gas–velocity, dust‐particle velocity and temperature, shearing stress and heat transfer coefficients are calculated numerically for various parameters occurring in the problem. It is observed that due to the presence of dust particles, the gas velocity is found to decrease. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper deals with the study of the laminar free‐convection boundary‐layer flow about a heated and rotating down‐pointing vertical cone in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. Two cases of heat transfer analysis are discussed. These are: (i) the rotating cone with prescribed surface temperature and (ii) the rotating cone with prescribed surface heat flux. By means of similarity transformation, the governing partial differential equations are reduced into highly non‐linear ordinary differential equations. The resulting non‐linear system has been solved analytically using a very efficient technique, namely homotopy analysis method. Expressions for velocity and temperature fields are developed in a series form. The influence of various pertinent parameters is also seen on the velocity and temperature fields. We consider the magnetohydrodynamic flow that is laminar and steady of a viscous, incompressible, and electrically conducting fluid in a semi‐infinite duct under an externally applied magnetic field. The flow is driven by the current produced by a pressure gradient. The applied magnetic field is perpendicular to the semi‐infinite walls that are kept at the same magnetic field value in magnitude but opposite in sign. The wall that connects the two semi‐infinite walls is partly non‐conducting and partly conducting (in the middle). A BEM solution was obtained using a fundamental solution that enables to treat the magnetohydrodynamic equations in coupled form with general wall conductivities. The inhomogeneity in the equations due to the pressure gradient was tackled, obtaining a particular solution, and the BEM was applied with a fundamental solution of coupled homogeneous convection–diffusion type partial differential equations. Constant elements were used for the discretization of the boundaries (y = 0, ?a ? x ? a) and semi‐infinite walls at x = ±a, by keeping them as finite since the boundary integral equations are restricted to these boundaries due to the regularity conditions as y → ∞ . The solution is presented in terms of equivelocity and induced magnetic field contours for several values of Hartmann number (M), conducting length (l), and non‐conducting wall conditions (k). The effect of the parameters on the solution is studied. Flow rates are also calculated for these values of parameters. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Taking Hall and ion‐slip current into account, the unsteady magnetohydrodynamic heat‐generating free convective flow of a partially ionized gas past an infinite vertical plate in a rotating frame of reference is investigated theoretically. A computer program using finite elements is employed to solve the coupled non‐linear differential equations for velocity and temperature fields. The effects of Hall and ion‐slip currents as well as the other parameters entering into the problem are discussed extensively and shown graphically. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, the unsteady three‐dimensional boundary layer flow due to a stretching surface in a viscous and incompressible micropolar fluid is considered. The partial differential equations governing the unsteady laminar boundary layer flow are solved numerically using an implicit finite‐difference scheme. The numerical solutions are obtained which are uniformly valid for all dimensionless time from initial unsteady‐state flow to final steady‐state flow in the whole spatial region. The equations for the initial unsteady‐state flow are also solved analytically. It is found that there is a smooth transition from the small‐time solution to the large‐time solution. The features of the flow for different values of the governing parameters are analyzed and discussed. The solutions of interest for the skin friction coefficient with various values of the stretching parameter c and material parameter K are presented. The lattice‐BGK method has been extended by introducing additional, free parameters in the original formulation of the lattice‐BGK methods. The relationship between these parameters and the macroscopic moment equations is analysed by Taylor series and Chapman–Enskog expansion. The parameters are determined from the macroscopic moment equations by comparisons with the governing equations to be modelled. Extensions are presented for the Navier–Stokes equations at low Mach numbers in Cartesian or axisymmetric coordinates with constant or variable density, for scalar convection–diffusion equations and for equations of Poisson type. The generalized lattice‐BGK concept is demonstrated by two applications of chemical engineering. These are the computation of chemically reacting flow through an axisymmetric reactor and of the transport and deposition of particles to filters under the action of different forces. A flexible, fully automated, computer‐algebra algorithm is developed for solving a class of non‐linear partial‐differential evolution equations arising frequently in the modeling of two‐dimensional transient free‐surface viscous thin‐film flows. The method, which is formulated for solving spatially periodic problems, is based upon an explicit multiple‐timescale asymptotic approximation of the thin‐film thickness. It admits the resolution of diverse physical phenomena by employing a finite geometric progression of increasingly slow timescales. The method is implemented on a challenging test problem comprising the evolution of an annular film of viscous liquid, with a free surface, adhering to the exterior of a horizontal rotating circular cylinder; as a model for numerous industrially motivated coating flows, this benchmark problem has been analyzed in diverse numerical and theoretical studies, against whose results those of the present method are compared. The explicit algebraic form of the solution admits a study of large‐time evolutionary dynamics that lies beyond the reach of considerably more expensive conventional numerical solvers, thereby shedding new light on the hitherto‐undiscovered explicit dependence of large‐time evolutionary fluid dynamics in terms of independent parameters describing gravitational and capillary effects. The results obtained from the new computer‐algebra procedure are demonstrated to be in good agreement with those obtained from a bespoke efficient numerical integration method that is spectrally accurate in space and 8th‐order (Runge–Kutta) in time. Newly discovered mechanisms describing the decay of free‐surface wave modes, from arbitrary initial conditions to the steady state, are presented. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper applies the finite‐volume method to computations of steady flows of viscous and viscoelastic incompressible fluids in complex two and three‐dimensional geometries. The materials adopted in the study obey different constitutive laws: Newtonian, purely viscous Carreau–Yasuda as also Upper‐Convected Maxwell and Phan‐Thien/Tanner differential models, with a Williams–Landel–Ferry (WLF) equation for temperature dependence. Specific analyses are made depending on the rheological model. A staggered grid is used for discretizing the equations and unknowns. Stockage possibilities allow us to solve problems involving a great number of degrees of freedom, up to 1 500 000 unknowns with a desk computer. In relation to the fluid properties, our numerical simulations provide flow characteristics for various 2D and 3D configurations and demonstrate the possibilities of the code to solve problems involving complex nonlinear constitutive equations with thermal effects. A lattice Boltzmann model for the fractional sub‐diffusion equation is presented. By using the Chapman–Enskog expansion and the multiscale time expansion, several higher‐order moments of equilibrium distribution functions and a series of partial differential equations in different time scales are obtained. Furthermore, the modified partial differential equation of the fractional sub‐diffusion equation with the second‐order truncation error is obtained. In the numerical simulations, comparisons between numerical results of the lattice Boltzmann models and exact solutions are given. The numerical results agree well with the classical ones. A new PLIC‐VOF method is proposed to track deformable particles, such as bubbles and liquid droplets, that can be smaller than the grid spacing. The idea is to replace the surface normal (SN) calculation used in the PLIC, by the SN vector obtained from partial differential equations that are solved together with the advection algorithm. The equations for the evolution of SN vector are derived, and examined by using the first‐order and the second‐order upwind schemes. Since the normal vector is defined in every cell, the method generally improves the accuracy at low grid resolution. It is found that a normal vector of zero magnitude is located at the centroid of a particle, to second‐order accuracy for small particles. The motion of a subgrid particle is controlled by the arrival of the zero vector in the present PLIC/SN method, so that the particle can be translated at the right speed without any additional treatment. This has been numerically verified by simulating a particle of one‐tenth of grid spacing traveling in three different directions, in addition to a few typical test cases. Decomposition methods based on split operators are proposed for numerical integration of the time‐domain Maxwell's equations for the first time. The methods are obtained by splitting the Hamiltonian function of Maxwell's equations into two analytically computable exponential sub‐propagators in the time direction based on different order decomposition methods, and then the equations are evaluated in the spatial direction by the staggered fourth‐order finite‐difference approximations. The stability and numerical dispersion analysis for different order decomposition methods are also presented. The theoretical predictions are confirmed by our numerical results. This paper describes a method for obtaining a time continuous reduced order model (ROM) from a system of time continuous linear differential equations. These equations are first put into a time discrete form using a finite difference approximation. The unit sample responses of the discrete system are calculated for each system input and these provide the Markov parameters of the system. An eigenvalue realization algorithm (ERA) is used to construct a discrete ROM. This ROM is then used to obtain a continuous ROM of the original continuous system. The focus of this paper is on the application of this method to the calculation of unsteady flows using the linearized Euler equations on moving meshes for aerofoils undergoing heave or linearized pitch motions. Applying a standard cell‐centre spatial discretization and taking account of mesh movement a continuous system of differential equations is obtained which are continuous in time. These are put into discrete time form using an implicit finite difference approximation. Results are presented demonstrating the efficiency of the system reduction method for this system. This work describes a methodology to simulate free surface incompressible multiphase flows. This novel methodology allows the simulation of multiphase flows with an arbitrary number of phases, each of them having different densities and viscosities. Surface and interfacial tension effects are also included. The numerical technique is based on the GENSMAC front‐tracking method. The velocity field is computed using a finite‐difference discretization of a modification of the Navier–Stokes equations. These equations together with the continuity equation are solved for the two‐dimensional multiphase flows, with different densities and viscosities in the different phases. The governing equations are solved on a regular Eulerian grid, and a Lagrangian mesh is employed to track free surfaces and interfaces. The method is validated by comparing numerical with analytic results for a number of simple problems; it was also employed to simulate complex problems for which no analytic solutions are available. The method presented in this paper has been shown to be robust and computationally efficient. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents a two‐dimensional finite element model for simulating dynamic propagation of weakly dispersive waves. Shallow water equations including extra non‐hydrostatic pressure terms and a depth‐integrated vertical momentum equation are solved with linear distributions assumed in the vertical direction for the non‐hydrostatic pressure and the vertical velocity. The model is developed based on the platform of a finite element model, CCHE2D. A physically bounded upwind scheme for the advection term discretization is developed, and the quasi second‐order differential operators of this scheme result in no oscillation and little numerical diffusion. The depth‐integrated non‐hydrostatic wave model is solved semi‐implicitly: the provisional flow velocity is first implicitly solved using the shallow water equations; the non‐hydrostatic pressure, which is implicitly obtained by ensuring a divergence‐free velocity field, is used to correct the provisional velocity, and finally the depth‐integrated continuity equation is explicitly solved to satisfy global mass conservation. The developed wave model is verified by an analytical solution and validated by laboratory experiments, and the computed results show that the wave model can properly handle linear and nonlinear dispersive waves, wave shoaling, diffraction, refraction and focusing. The flow structure and isotherms of hard disk drives (HDD) are investigated using a finite element method (FEM). The governing equations are based on the three‐dimensional axisymmetric Navier–Stokes partial differential equations (PDEs) with Galerkin FE formulation. Co‐rotating models are selected that include the non‐ventilated configuration within an enclosure. With various operating conditions for the disk system, the following important parameters are considered: disk number (n), rotational speed (Ro), and wall temperature. The flow structure changes rapidly when the rotational Reynolds number (Reϕ) is increased. The flow has a greater tendency to flow radially outwards and the swirling velocity tends to be more vertically orientated, especially for high Reϕ values. The isotherms only have small varying regions near the rotating axis, forming outward arcs near the wall and inward arcs near the end gap of the disk. Different from the case without the enclosure, the vorticities exist along the outer disk ends. Both the swirling velocity and isotherms indicate nearly symmetrical characteristics, as expected. A higher temperature gradient occurs near the right outer disk ends, which implies the characteristic of higher heat flux. A commercial computational fluid dynamic (CFD) code, CFX‐5, was chosen to validate the results. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
