Large plastic deformation in sheets made of dual phase steel DP800 is studied experimentally and numerically. Shear testing is applied to obtain large plastic strains in sheet metals without strain localisation. In the experiments, full-field displacement measurements are carried out by means of digital image correlation, and based on these measurements the strain field of the deformed specimen is calculated. In the numerical analyses, an elastoplastic constitutive model with isotropic hardening and the Cockcroft–Latham fracture criterion is adopted to predict the observed behaviour. The strain hardening parameters are obtained from a standard uniaxial tensile test for small and moderate strains, while the shear test is used to determine the strain hardening for large strains and to calibrate the fracture criterion. Finite Element (FE) calculations with shell and brick elements are performed using the non-linear FE code LS–DYNA. The local strains in the shear zone and the nominal shear stress-elongation characteristics obtained by experiments and FE simulations are compared, and, in general, good agreement is obtained. It is demonstrated how the strain hardening at large strains and the Cockcroft–Latham fracture criterion can be calibrated from the in-plane shear test with the aid of non-linear FE analyses. In general, the shear localization process involves initiation and growth. Initiation is expected to be a stochastic process in material space where anisotropy in the elastic-plastic behavior of single crystals and inter-crystalline interactions serve to form natural perturbations to the material's local stability. A hat-shaped sample geometry was used to study shear localization growth. It is an axi-symmetric sample with an upper “hat” portion and a lower “brim” portion with the shear zone located between the hat and brim. The shear zone length was 870-890 μm with deformation imposed through a Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar system at maximum top-to-bottom velocity in the range of 8-25 m/s. The deformation behavior of tantalum tophat samples is modeled through direct polycrystal simulations. An embedded Voronoï-tessellated two-dimensional microstructure is used to represent the material within the shear zone of the sample. A thermo-mechanically coupled elasto-viscoplastic single crystal model is presented and used to represent the response of the grains within the aggregate shear zone. In the shoulder regions away from the shear zone where strain levels remain on the order of 0.05, the material is represented by an isotropic J2 flow theory based upon the elasto-viscoplastic Mechanical Threshold Stress (MTS) model for flow strength. The top surface stress versus displacement results were compared to those of the experiments and over-all the simulated stress magnitude is over-predicted. It is believed that the reason for this is that the simulations are two-dimensional. A region within the numerical shear zone was isolated for statistical examination. The vonMises stress state within this isolated shear zone region suggests an approximate normal distribution with a factor of two difference between the minimum and maximum points in the distribution. The equivalent plastic strain distribution within this same region has values ranging between 0.4 and 1.5 and is not symmetric. Other material state distributions are also given. The crystallographic texture within this isolated shear zone is also compared to the experimental texture and found to match reasonably well considering the simulations are two-dimensional.

The analytical solution is derived for the plane strain stress field around a cylindrical void in a hexagonal close-packed single crystal with three in-plane slip systems oriented at the angle π/3 with respect to one another. The critical resolved shear stress on each slip system is assumed to be equal. The crystal is loaded by both internal pressure and a far-field equibiaxial compressive stress. The deformation field takes the form of angular sectors, called slip sectors, within which only one slip system is active; the boundaries between different sectors are radial lines. The stress fields are derived by enforcing equilibrium and a rigid, ideally plastic constitutive relationship, in the spirit of anisotropic slip line theory. The results show that each slip sector is divided into smaller regions denoted as stress sectors and the stress state valid within each stress sector is derived. It is shown that stresses are unique and are continuous within stress sectors and across stress sector boundaries, but the gradient of stresses is not continuous across the boundaries between stress sectors. The solution shows self-similarity in that the stresses over the entire domain can be determined from the stresses within a small region adjacent to the void by invoking certain scaling and symmetry properties. In addition, the stress state exhibits periodicity along logarithmic spirals which emanate from the void. The results predict that the mean value of in-plane pressure required to activate plastic deformation around a void in a single crystal can be higher than that necessary for a void in an isotropic material and is sensitive to the orientation of the slip systems relative to the void.

Simple shear tests are widely used for material characterization especially for sheet metals to achieve large deformations without plastic instability. This work describes three different shear tests for sheet metals in order to enhance the knowledge of the material behavior under shear conditions. The test setups are different in terms of the specimen geometry and the fixtures. A shear test setup as proposed by Miyauchi, according to the ASTM standard sample, as well as an in-plane torsion test are compared in this study. A detailed analysis of the experimental strain distribution measured by digital image correlation is discussed for each test. Finite element simulations are carried out to evaluate the effect of specimen geometries on the stress distributions in the shear zones. The experimental macroscopic flow stress vs. strain behavior shows no significant influence of the specimen geometry when similar strain measurements and evaluation schemes are used. Minor differences in terms of the stress distribution in the shear zone can be detected in the numerical results. This work attempts to give a unique overview and a detailed study of the most commonly used shear tests for sheet metal characterization. It also provides information on the applicability of each test for the observation of the material behavior under shear stress with a view to material modeling for finite element simulations.

The stereoimaging technique is an accurate, high-resolution means of measuring the in-plane displacements resulting from the deformation of a specimen so that the corresponding components of the strain tensor can be computed independently of the stresses. The example used in this paper is a fatigue-cracked specimen of a microscopically homogeneous experimental powder-metallurgy aluminum alloy, analyzed to determine the displacement and strain fields accompanying the opening of the fatigue crack. The displacement measurements are processed by a computer program which compensates for measurement fluctuations in the displacement data by smoothing, and derives the strain magnitudes. The principal strains and the maximum shear strain are determined using Mohr's circle, and the latter strain is then used to estimate the plastic-zone size. The crack-opening mode may be inferred from the displacement map, and the state of stress (plane stress or plane strain) inferred by applying the in-plane compatibility equation.

A general case of proportional loading with a complex stress state of the material in the pre-fracture zone, which is typical for polycrystalline solids with plastic deformation, is considered. A sufficient criterion of fracture is proposed for the case of a complex stress state with non-proportional deformation of the material in the pre-fracture zone. Critical parameters of fracture (pre-fracture zone length and load) for cracks propagating in quasi-brittle materials are obtained with the use of a modified Leonov-Panasyuk-Dugdale model. The pre-fracture zone width is determined by solving the problem of the plasticity theory in the vicinity of the crack tip. The proposed modification of the Leonov-Panasyuk-Dugdale model makes it possible to estimate the critical opening of the crack and the critical displacement of the crack flanks. Inequalities that describe different mechanisms of material fracture under proportional loading (predominantly shear fracture mechanism and fracture mechanism through cleavage) are derived.

Novel Technique for Static and Dynamic Shear Testing of Ti6Al4V Sheet
Few shear test techniques exist that cover the range of strain rates from static to dynamic. In this work, a novel specimen geometry is presented that can be used for the characterisation of the shear behaviour of sheet metals over a wide range of strain rates using traditional tensile test devices. The main objectives during the development of the shear specimen have been 1) obtaining a homogeneous stress state with low stress triaxiality in the zone of the specimen subjected to shear and 2) appropriateness for dynamic testing. Additionally, avoiding premature specimen failure due to edge effects was aimed at. Most dimensional and practical constraints arose from the dynamic test in which the specimen is loaded by mechanical waves in a split Hopkinson tensile bar device. Design of the specimen geometry is based on finite element simulations using ABAQUS/Explicit. The behaviour of the specimen is compared with the more commonly used simple shear specimen with clamped grips. Advantages of the new technique are shown. The technique is applied to Ti6Al4V sheet. During the high strain rate experiments high speed photography and digital image correlation are used to obtain the local shear strain in the specimen. Comparison of experimental and numerical results shows good correspondence.

Dynamic material properties inferred via experiment can be strongly influenced by the choice of test specimen geometry unless care is taken to ensure that mechanical fields (stress, strain, etc.) within the specimen adequately reflect the ideal homogeneous deformation state. In this work, finite element models of simple shear, cylindrical compression, simple tension, and bi-conical shear test specimens were analyzed in order to quantify the relative conformity of each specimen to its corresponding ideal. Three metrics of conformity were evaluated, based respectively on the distributions of stress, strain, and strain energy density. The results show that a simple shear specimen provides superior conformity. Other factors involved in the selection of test specimen geometry are also discussed. Such factors include relative linearity and symmetry of measured stress–strain data, grip slip, and heat build up.

In this paper, a general theory on the asymptotic field near the crack tip for plates and shells with and without shear deformation effect is established. It is found that four stress intensity factors, two for symmetrical and antisymmetrical stretching and two for symmetrical and antisymmetrical bending, are required to describe arbitrary asymptotic fields near the crack tip for plates without shear deformation. An additional stress intensity factor is required for the transverse shearing force induced by antisymmetrical bending when the shear deformation is included in the analysis. It is also proven by means of the complex variable technique that for problems of plates with shear deformation, there exist similarities in the asymptotic expressions of moments and membrane forces and also in the asymptotic expressions of in-plane displacements and rotations of the mid-surface. The energy release rate associated with crack growth in the direction of the crack line can be expressed in terms of stress intensity factors by means of Irwin's method of work and energy associated with a virtual crack extension. A combined stress intensity factor can be defined through the total energy release rate. The theory of the fracture of plates is generalized and applied to the study of problems in the fracture of shells. An example of an infinitely long cylindrical shell with a circumferential crack subjected to remote axial tension is given to demonstrate the application of the theory and to test the accuracy of the numerical analysis used for the problem.

In general, the shear localization process involves initiation and growth. Initiation is expected to be a stochastic process in material space where anisotropy in the elastic–plastic behavior of single crystals and inter-crystalline interactions serve to form natural perturbations to the material’s local stability. A hat-shaped sample geometry was used to study shear localization growth. It is an axi-symmetric sample with an upper “hat” portion and a lower “brim” portion with the shear zone located between the hat and brim. The shear zone length is 870–890 μm with deformation imposed through a split-Hopkinson pressure bar system at maximum top-to-bottom velocity in the range of 8–25 m/s. We present experimental results of the deformation response of tantalum and 316L stainless steel samples. The tantalum samples did not form shear bands but the stainless steel sample formed a late stage shear band. We have also modeled these experiments using both conductive and adiabatic continuum models. An anisotropic elasto-viscoplastic constitutive model with damage evolution was used within the finite element code EPIC. A Mie-Gruneisen equation of state and the rate and temperature sensitive MTS flow stress model together with a Gurson flow surface were employed. The models performed well in predicting the experimental data. The numerical results for tantalum suggested a maximum equivalent strain rate on the order of 7 × 104 s−1 in the gage section for an imposed top surface displacement rate of 17.5 m/s. The models also suggested that for an initial temperature of 298 K a temperature in the neighborhood of 900 K was reached within the shear section. The numerical results for stainless steel suggest that melting temperature was reached throughout the shear band shortly after peak load. Due to sample geometry, the stress state in the shear zone was not pure shear; a significant normal stress relative to the shear zone basis line was developed.

Effects of magnetic field on fracture toughness of soft ferromagnetic materials were studied using experimental techniques and theoretical models. The manganese–zinc ferrite with a single-edge-notch-beam (SENB) were chosen to be the specimen and the Vickers’ indentation specimen subjected to a magnetic field were chosen to be the specimens. Results indicate that there is no significant variations of the measured fracture toughness of the manganese–zinc ferrite ceramic in the presence of the magnetic field. The theoretical model involves an anti-plane shear crack with finite length in an infinite magnetostrictive body where an in-plane magnetic field prevails at infinity. Magnetoelasticity is used. The crack-tip elastic field is different from that of the classical mode III fracture problem. Furthermore, the magnetoelastic fracture of the soft ferromagnetic material was studied by solving the stress field for a soft ferromagnetic plane with a center-through elliptical crack. The stress field at the tip of a slender elliptical crack is obtained for which only external magnetic field normal to the major axis of the ellipse is applied at infinity. The results indicate that the near field stresses are governed by the magnetostriction and permeability of the soft ferromagnetic material. The induction magnetostrictive modulus is a key parameter for finding whether magnetostriction or magnetic-force-induced deformation is dominant near the front an elliptically-shaped crack. The influence of the magnetic field on the apparent toughness of a soft ferromagnetic material with a crack-like flaw can be regarded approximately in two ways: one possesses a large induction magnetostrictive modulus and the other has a small modulus. Finally, a small-scale magnetic-yielding model was developed on the basis of linear magnetization to interpret the experimental results related to the fracture of the manganese–zinc ferrite ceramics under magnetic field. Studied also is the fracture test of the soft ferromagnetic steel with compact tension specimens published in the existing literature.

Distributions of shear strains and strain states (triaxiality) were analysed for two in-plane shear test fixtures (Iosipescu and V-notched rail), using digital image correlation and numerical simulations. Three different polypropylene-based materials (two talc-filled compounds and one unfilled homopolymer) were tested. The three materials behaved differently in the shear tests. Most notably, cracks developed in tension near the notches for the particle-filled materials, while the unfilled homopolymer did not fracture. There were also differences between the materials regarding strain localisation between the notches, strain rates vs. strain level (for a given cross-head speed), thickness change in the sheared section, and triaxiality. The yield stresses in shear, uniaxial tension and uniaxial compression showed pressure sensitivity. At least for equivalent strain rates below 1?s?1, the strain rate sensitivity of the yield stress was approximately the same in these three stress states. The stress?Cstrain curves obtained with the two methods were quite similar for these materials. There were some differences between the methods regarding the ease of mounting and aligning specimens, the complexity of specimen deformation patterns, and the uniformity of the shear strain distribution between the notches.

The nonlinear behavior in shear and transverse compression of unidirectional AS4/PEEK and their interaction are investigated experimentally. The composite is rate dependent even at room temperature and its rate exponent is similar to that of neat PEEK. The material is tested under pure shear, pure compression and under biaxial loading histories. The biaxial tests are performed in a custom facility on thin strips of the material. The facility allows freedom to choose the loading path in the biaxial stress and strain spaces of interest. Tests are performed for three biaxial loading paths. In the first, the specimen is sheared then compressed while the shear stress is held constant; in the second, the specimen is compressed then sheared while the compressive stress is held constant; and in the third, the specimen is loaded simultaneously by proportional amounts of compression and shear. It was found that the induced deformation is influenced significantly by the loading history followed. Also, initial loading in shear or compression has only a modest effect on subsequent loading of the other type. An unorthodox yielding behavior for the composite results from this lack of interaction. Finally, the stresses at failure are found to trace an elliptical path in the shear–transverse compression plane, but the failure stress state is not significantly affected by the loading path followed.

In the present work, shear-compression specimen was successfully employed to study the shear flow behavior of AZ31 magnesium alloy at high temperatures and in quasi-static regime. The loading process of shear-compression testing was simulated using ABAQUS software. This was carried out in the temperature range of 250–450°C and displacement rates of 1.5, 15 and 150 mm/min. In addition, to validate the numerical simulation results, the shear compression specimens were also compressed experimentally at the same conditions of numerical ones. Equivalent stress–strain curves obtained from numerical simulation results along with microstructural observations were utilized to investigate the effect of loading conditions on deformation behavior of the experimental alloy. The results indicated a homogenous distribution of shear strains within the gage and the high applicability of shear-compression specimen to study shear flow behavior of materials at hot deformation conditions.

This paper presents the research results concerning the microcracking zone near the notch tip in rock by compressive shear fracture specimen. By the white light speckles method, photoelastic coating test and microscopic observation on rock slices, it is has been found that the said microcracking zone is of asymmetric mulberry leaf shape and the rock grains in the zone are broken so as to form many cracks. In addition, a full field displacement pattern is obtained. The tests also demonstrate that the principal fracture plane of the rock in the compressive shear state is to propagate along the boundary plane of the microcracking zone. Finally, this paper gives a shape equation which describes the microcracking zone, of fracture nucleus for the rock under compression and shear. The project Supported by National Natural Science Foundation of ChinaThe engineers involved in this projcet are Shao-Ping Gong, Shan-Yu Zhang, Xiang-Gui Long, Zhi-Jun Li, Cui-Yun Zhou, Chun-Ming Hu, Zhong-Jian Chen and Ru-Qiang Zhang.

A combined Moiré-Sagnac interferometry method is developed for in-plane (u andv) and out-of-plane (w) surface deformation measurement. The combined optical setup is used to measure three-dimensional crack tip deformations of AI 2024-0 and AI 2024-T4 specimens at room temperature and an inconel 909 specimen at 570°C. Measured displacements near the crack tip region of the AI 2024-T4 specimen are used as input nodal displacements to determine stress intensity factors based on two-dimensional and three-dimensional Jacobian derivative method. The values compare favorably with theoretical calculations. The extent of the three-dimensional crack tip deformation zone is also discussed.
