The turbulent pipe flow of a highly dilute aqueous cationic surfactant solution is investigated by means of a pulsed ultrasound Doppler method with special emphasis on the wall boundary layer. The velocity profiles are recorded for several Reynolds numbers at varying ages of the solution. The wall shear stress velocities u τ used for the normalization of the velocity profiles are determined by fitting the measured profiles to the universal linear velocity profile in the viscous sublayer. The theoretical pressure loss is then calculated from the numerical values of u τ and compared to the experimental values. Two different scaling methods are discussed for the velocity fluctuations concerning the correlation of the root-mean square values with the effect and the amount of drag reduction. It is shown that outer scaling with the mean velocity is appropriate for the detection of drag reduction in surfactant solutions, rather than inner scaling with the wall shear stress velocity, which is common practice in investigations of 'usual' turbulent flows.  相似文献

A digital holographic microscope is used to simultaneously measure the instantaneous 3D flow structure in the inner part of a turbulent boundary layer over a smooth wall, and the spatial distribution of wall shear stresses. The measurements are performed in a fully developed turbulent channel flow within square duct, at a moderately high Reynolds number. The sample volume size is 90 × 145 × 90 wall units, and the spatial resolution of the measurements is 3–8 wall units in streamwise and spanwise directions and one wall unit in the wall-normal direction. The paper describes the data acquisition and analysis procedures, including the particle tracking method and associated method for matching of particle pairs. The uncertainty in velocity is estimated to be better than 1 mm/s, less than 0.05% of the free stream velocity, by comparing the statistics of the normalized velocity divergence to divergence obtained by randomly adding an error of 1 mm/s to the data. Spatial distributions of wall shear stresses are approximated with the least square fit of velocity measurements in the viscous sublayer. Mean flow profiles and statistics of velocity fluctuations agree very well with expectations. Joint probability density distributions of instantaneous spanwise and streamwise wall shear stresses demonstrate the significance of near-wall coherent structures. The near wall 3D flow structures are classified into three groups, the first containing a pair of counter-rotating, quasi streamwise vortices and high streak-like shear stresses; the second group is characterized by multiple streamwise vortices and little variations in wall stress; and the third group has no buffer layer structures.  相似文献

The differential pressure reading from a static hole pair is utilized for determination of the local wall shear stress. Both the hole diameter and forward-facing angle are varied to test the sensitivity of the device. The static hole pair in tested in a two-dimensional zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer on a smooth surface. The calibrating values for the local wall shear is determined from the universal scaling laws for the mean velocity profile in the inner part of the turbulent boundary layer. The static hole pair is found to be sensitive to imperfections in the manufacturing process, and needs an individual calibration in order to make accurate measurements of the local skin friction possible.  相似文献

A turbulent boundary layer of a water flow is investigated by means of pulsed ultrasound Doppler velocimetry. The advantage of this method is the acquisition of complete velocity profiles along the sound propagation line within very short time intervals. The shear stress velocity, used for normalizing the velocity profiles, was determined by fitting the profiles to the universal profiles in a turbulent boundary layer obtained from Prandtl's mixing length theory. A coordinate transformation in the near-wall region is proposed to allocate the velocity data to "true" wall distances. From the experimental values of the wall shear stress velocity, the friction factors for a turbulent pipe flow are calculated and compared to the Blasius law. The overall error in measurement was estimated to NJ.4%.  相似文献

The present paper deals with the experimental analysis of a strong decelerated turbulent boundary layer developed on a flat plate. The aim of the study was to examine the effects of pressure gradient on a non-equilibrium boundary layer while indicating local areas of equilibrium flow. The effect of the Reynolds number on a turbulent boundary layer developed with matching the external pressure gradient conditions was also analysed. The emphasis was on the analysis of mean flow statistics i.e. mean velocity profiles, streamwise Reynolds stress and the effect of large- and small-scale interactions by analysing the skewness factor and energy isocontours maps. The comparative analysis of the external data indicated that the structure of the turbulent boundary layer depends not only on local effects of pressure gradient but also on the upstream history of the flow. For the same condition of pressure gradient, the increased momentum is observed near the wall with the increase of the Reynolds number at the Incipient Detachment, where increased turbulence production is also observed, leading to the failure of the outer scaling methods. Surprisingly, the effect of the Reynolds number decays at the intermittent transitory detachment where similar profiles were observed. The upper inflection point in the mean profile corresponded well with the outer maximum of the Reynolds stress and zero crossing of skewness factor. Position of this point occurs at different locations, depending on the flow history effects. The last observation demonstrates that the inflection points results from large- and small-scale interactions, which led to the increased convection velocity of small scales near the wall.  相似文献

Some recent studies with irregular roughness suggest that the Nikuradse [Nikuradse, J., NACA TM 1292, National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics (1933)] equivalent sand-grain roughness measure gives inconsistent results of the flow characteristics. In situations where the roughness is very strong to stifle or diminish the viscous effects the viscous scaling laws alone will not be very meaningful. The present study aims to find an alternative scaling parameter for such cases. Here, the measured mean and turbulent velocity profiles on a nonuniform roughness surface, simulating a gas turbine blade roughness, are presented. A nonzero wall normal pressure gradient is caused which is believed to contribute to the velocity deficit in the near-wall rough boundary layer velocity profile. The surface pressure variation is also directly influenced by the local roughness. The normal turbulent stresses are increased on the rough surface, the vertical component more than the longitudinal component. A pressure gradient velocity scale (similar to that proposed for adverse pressure gradient boundary layer modeling by Durbin and Belcher [Durbin, P.A. and Belcher, S.E., J. Fluid Mech. 238 (1992), 699-722] is defined to capture the pressure effects induced by such roughness on the inner layer properties.  相似文献

A turbulent separation-reattachment flow in a two-dimensional asymmetrical curved-wall diffuser is studied by a two-dimensional laser doppler velocimeter. The turbulent boundary layer separates on the lower curved wall under strong pressure gradient and then reattaches on a parallel channel. At the inlet of the diffuser, Reynolds number based on the diffuser height is 1.2×105 and the velocity is 25.2m/s. The results of experiments are presented and analyzed in new defined streamline-aligned coordinates. The experiment shows that after Transitory Detachment Reynolds shear stress is negative in the near-wall backflow region. Their characteristics are approximately the same as in simple turbulent shear layers near the maximum Reynolds shear stress. A scale is formed using the maximum Reynolds shear stresses. It is found that a Reynolds shear stress similarity exists from separation to reattachment and the Schofield-Perry velocity law exists in the forward shear flow. Both profiles are used in the experimental work that leads to the design of a new eddy-viscosity model. The length scale is taken from that developed by Schofield and Perry. The composite velocity scale is formed by the maximum Reynolds shear stress and the Schofield-Perry velocity scale as well as the edge velocity of the boundary layer. The results of these experiments are presented in this paper.  相似文献

A theoretical study of forced convective film condensation inside vertical tubes is presented. We propose a unified procedure for predicting the pressure gradient and condensation heat transfer coefficient of a vapor flowing turbulently in the core and associated with laminar or turbulent film on the tube wall. The analysis for the vapor flows is performed under the condition that the velocity profiles are locally self-similar. The laminar and turbulent film models equate the gravity, pressure and viscous forces, and consider the effect of interfacial shear. The transition from laminar to turbulent film depends not only on the liquid Reynolds number but also on the interfacial shear stress. In this work we also proposed a new eddy viscosity model which is divided into three regions: the inner region in liquid condensate near the wall; the interface region including both liquid and vapor; and the outer region for the vapor core. Comparisons of the theory with some published experimental data showed good agreement.  相似文献

Cetyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC) surfactant additives, because of their long-life characteristics, can be used as promising drag-reducers in district heating and cooling systems. In the present study we performed both numerical and experimental tests for a 75 ppm CTAC surfactant drag-reducing channel flow. A two-component PIV system was used to measure the instantaneous streamwise and wall-normal velocity components. A Giesekus constitutive equation was adopted to model the extra stress due to the surfactant additives, with the constitutive parameters being determined by well-fitting apparent shear viscosities, as measured by an Advanced Rheometric Expansion System (ARES) rheometer. In the numerical study, we connected the realistic rheological properties with the drag-reduction rate. This is different from previous numerical studies in which the model parameters were set artificially. By performing consistent comparisons between numerical and experimental results, we have obtained an insight into the mechanism of the additive-induced drag-reduction phenomena.

Our simulation showed that the addition of surfactant additives introduces several changes in turbulent flow characteristics: (1) In the viscous sublayer, the mean velocity gradient becomes gentler due to the viscoelastic forces introduced by the additives. The buffer layer becomes expanded and the slope of the velocity profile in the logarithmic layer increases. (2) The locations where the streamwise velocity fluctuation and Reynolds shear stress attain their maximum value shifted from the wall region to the bulk flow region. (3) The root-mean-square velocity fluctuations in the wall-normal direction decrease for the drag-reducing flow. (4) The Reynolds shear stress decreases dramatically and the deficit of the Reynolds shear stress is mainly compensated by the viscoelastic shear stress. (5) The turbulent production becomes much smaller and its peak-value position moves toward the bulk flow region. All of these findings agree qualitatively with experimental measurements.

Regarding flow visualization, the violent streamwise vortices in the near wall region become dramatically suppressed, indicating that the additives weaken the ejection and sweeping motion, and thereby inhibit the generation of turbulence. The reduction in turbulence is accomplished by additive-introduced viscoelastic stress. Surfactant additives have dual effects on frictional drag: (1) introduce viscoelastic shear stress, which increases frictional drag; and (2) dampen the turbulent vortical structures, decrease the turbulent shear stress, and then decrease the frictional drag. Since the second effect is greater than the first one, drag-reduction occurs.  相似文献

Spanwise space–time correlations of the wall shear stress and the longitudinal velocity fluctuations in the low buffer layer of an unsteady channel flow are reported. The imposed amplitude is 20% of the centerline velocity and the imposed frequency covers a large range going from the quasi-steady limit to the bursting frequency of the corresponding steady flow. The unsteady spanwise correlation coefficient is investigated both through its own modulation characteristics (amplitude and phase shifts) and those of the resulting streak spacing. A good correspondence is found between the modulation of the streak spacing and that of the ejection period. The data is further analyzed by temporal filtering of the wall shear stress and streamwise velocity fluctuations. It is shown that the large outer-layer structures play a “passive” role in the unsteady response of the near wall turbulence. The inner wall eddies, in return, are amply responsible for the unsteady reaction of both the turbulent wall shear stress and the streamwise velocity intensities in the buffer layer.  相似文献

The process of laminar to turbulent transition induced by a von Karman vortex street wake, was studied for the case of a flat plate boundary layer. The boundary layer developed under zero pressure gradient conditions. The vortex street was generated by a cylinder positioned in the free stream. An X-type hot-wire probe located in the boundary layer, measured the streamwise and normal to the wall velocity components. The measurements covered two areas; the region of transition onset and development and the region where the wake and the boundary layer merged producing a turbulent flow. The evolution of Reynolds stresses and rms-values of velocity fluctuations along the transition region are presented and discussed. From the profiles of the Reynolds stress and the mean velocity profile, a ‘negative' energy production region along the transition region, was identified. A quadrant splitting analysis was applied to the instantaneous Reynolds stress signals. The contributions of the elementary coherent structures to the total Reynolds stress were evaluated, for several x-positions of the near wall region. Distinct regions in the streamwise and normal to the wall directions were identified during the transition.  相似文献

This paper investigates the layered structure of a turbulent plane wall jet at a distance from the nozzle exit. Based on the force balances in the mean momentum equation, the turbulent plane wall jet is divided into three regions: a boundary layer-like region (BLR) adjacent to the wall, a half free jet-like region (HJR) away from the wall, and a plug flow-like region (PFR) in between. In the PFR, the mean streamwise velocity is essentially the maximum velocity, and the simplified mean continuity and mean momentum equations result in a linear variation of the mean wall-normal velocity and Reynolds shear stress. In the HJR, as in a turbulent free jet, a proper scale for the mean wall-normal flow is the mean wall-normal velocity far from the wall and a proper scale for the Reynolds shear stress is the product of the maximum mean streamwise velocity and the velocity scale for the mean wall-normal flow. The BLR region can be divided into four sub-layers, similar to those in a canonical pressure-driven turbulent channel flow or shear-driven turbulent boundary layer flow. Building on the log-law for the mean streamwise velocity in the BLR, a new skin friction law is proposed for a turbulent wall jet. The new prediction agrees well with the correlation of Bradshaw and Gee (1960) over moderate Reynolds numbers, but gives larger skin frictions at higher Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

An adjoint optimization method is utilized to design an inviscid outer wall shape required for a turbulent flow field solution of the So–Mellor convex curved wall experiment using the Navier–Stokes equations. The associated cost function is the desired pressure distribution on the inner wall. Using this optimized wall shape with a Navier–Stokes method, the abilities of various turbulence models to simulate the effects of curvature without the complicating factor of streamwise pressure gradient are evaluated. The one-equation Spalart–Allmaras (SA) turbulence model overpredicts eddy viscosity, and its boundary layer profiles are too full. A curvature-corrected version of this model improves results, which are sensitive to the choice of a particular constant. An explicit algebraic stress model does a reasonable job predicting this flow field. However, results can be slightly improved by modifying the assumption on anisotropy equilibrium in the model's derivation. The resulting curvature-corrected explicit algebraic stress model (EASM) possesses no heuristic functions or additional constants. It slightly lowers the computed skin friction coefficient and the turbulent stress levels for this case, in better agreement with experiment. The effect on computed velocity profiles is minimal.  相似文献

Near-wall measurements are performed to study the effects of surface roughness and viscous shear stresses on the transitionally rough regime (5 < k + < 70) of a zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer. The x-dependence is known from the eleven consecutive measurements in the streamwise direction, which allows for the computation of the streamwise gradients in the boundary layer equations. Thus, the skin friction is computed from the integrated boundary layer equation with errors of 3 and 5% for smooth and rough, respectively. It is found that roughness destroys the viscous layer near the wall, thus, reducing the contribution of the viscous stress in the wall region. As a result, the contribution in the wall shear stress due to form drag increases, while the viscous stress decreases. This yields Reynolds number invariance in the skin friction as k + increases into the fully rough regime. Furthermore, the roughness at the wall reduces the high peak of the streamwise component of the Reynolds stress in the near-wall region. However, for the Reynolds wall-normal and shear stress components, its contribution is not significantly altered for sand grain roughness.  相似文献

The results of direct numerical simulation of turbulent flows of non-Newtonian pseudoplastic fluids in a straight pipe are presented. The data on the distributions of the turbulent stress tensor components and the shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy balances are obtained for steady turbulent flows at the Reynolds numbers of 104 and 2×104. As distinct from Newtonian fluid flows, the viscous shear stresses turn out to be significant even far from the wall. In power-law fluid flows the mechanism of the energy transport from axial to transverse component fluctuations is suppressed. It is shown that with decrease in the fluid index the turbulent transfer of the momentum and the velocity fluctuations between the wall layer and the flow core reduces, while the turbulent energy flux toward the wall increases. The earlier-proposed models for the average viscosity and the non-Newtonian one-point correlations are in good agreement with the data of direct numerical simulation.  相似文献

In this paper, direct numerical simulation is performed to investigate a pulsatile flow in a constricted channel to gain physical insights into laminar–turbulent–laminar flow transitions. An in-house computer code is used to conduct numerical simulations based on available high-performance shared memory parallel computing facilities. The Womersley number tested is fixed to 10.5 and the Reynolds number varies from 500 to 2000. The influences of the degree of stenosis and pulsatile conditions on flow transitions and structures are investigated. In the region upstream of the stenosis, the flow pattern is primarily laminar. Immediately after the stenosis, the flow recirculates under an adverse streamwise pressure gradient, and the flow pattern transitions from laminar to turbulent. In the region far downstream of the stenosis, the flow becomes re-laminarised. The physical characteristics of the flow field have been thoroughly analysed in terms of the mean streamwise velocity, turbulence kinetic energy, viscous wall shear stresses, wall pressure and turbulence kinetic energy spectra.
