The flow characteristics and the structure of highly buoyant jet of low density fluid issuing into a stagnant surrounding of high density fluid is studied by scanning stereo PIV combined with proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis. The experiment is carried out at Froude number of 0.3 and Reynolds number of 200, which satisfies the inflow condition due to the unstable density gradient near the nozzle exit. An increase in the maximum mean velocity occurs and the vertical velocity fluctuation is highly amplified near the nozzle exit, which suggests the influence of inflow due to the unstable density gradient. The POD analysis indicates that the vertical velocity fluctuation is the major source of fluctuating energy contributing to the development of the highly buoyant jet. The examination of the POD modes show that the longitudinal structure of the vertical velocity fluctuation is generated along the jet axis having the opposite sign of velocity fluctuation on both sides of the jet axis. The vertical scale of the POD mode decreases with increasing the mode number and results in the frequent appearance of cross-flow across the buoyant jet. The reconstruction flow from the POD modes indicates that the vortex structure is caused by the highly sheared layer between the upward and downward velocity and the inflow is induced by the vortex structure. The magnitude of the vortex structure seems to be weakened with an increase in the distance from the nozzle and the buoyant jet approaches to an asymptotic state in the further downstream.  相似文献

Buoyant flow is analysed for a vertical fluid saturated porous layer bounded by an isothermal plane and an isoflux plane in the case of a fully developed flow with a parallel velocity field. The effects of viscous dissipation and pressure work are taken into account in the framework of the Oberbeck–Boussinesq approximation scheme and of the Darcy flow model. Momentum and energy balances are combined in a dimensionless nonlinear ordinary differential equation solved numerically by a Runge–Kutta method. Both cases of upward pressure force (upward driven flows) and of downward pressure force (downward driven flows) are examined. The thermal behaviour for upward driven flows and downward driven flows is quite different. For upward driven flows, the combined effects of viscous dissipation and pressure work may produce a net cooling of the fluid even in the case of a positive heat input from the isoflux wall. For downward driven flows, viscous dissipation and pressure work yield a net heating of the fluid. A general reflection on the roles played by the effects of viscous dissipation and pressure work with respect to the Oberbeck–Boussinesq approximation is proposed.  相似文献

Summary The problem of convective magnetohydrodynamic channel flow in a vertical channel subjected simultaneously to an axial temperature gradient and a pressure gradient is examined when the thermal and the electrical conductance of the channel walls are arbitrary. The effects of wall conductances on the flow rate and heat transfer are found and discussed. When the vertical temperature gradient is negative, which is the case of heating from below, there exists a critical Rayleigh number at which the fluid becomes unstable. The critical Rayleigh number is also found as a function of the wall conductances. On leave from the State University of New York at Buffalo.  相似文献

Laminar forced convection flow of a liquid in the fully developed region of a circular duct with isothermal wall is analyzed. The effects of viscous dissipation as well as of temperature dependent viscosity are taken into account. The coupled momentum and energy equations are solved analytically by means of a power series method. Then, reference is made to the Poiseuille model for the temperature change of viscosity. For a fixed value of the axial pressure gradient along the duct, dual solutions are found for the velocity and temperature fields. Although dual solutions correspond to the same value of the axial pressure gradient, they lead in general to different values of the average fluid velocity, of the average fluid temperature and of the wall heat flux. It is shown that, for a given fluid and for a fixed duct radius, the absolute value of the axial pressure gradient has an upper bound above which no steady laminar solution can exist.  相似文献

Detailed results are presented for laminar film condensation from steam-air mixtures flowing downward in vertical flat-plate channels. The mixture flow is laminar and saturation conditions prevail at the inlet. A fully coupled implicit numerical approach is used that achieves excellent convergence behavior, even for high inlet gas mass fractions. The detailed results include velocity, temperature, and gas mass fraction profiles, as well as axial variations of film thickness, pressure gradient and Nusselt number. The effects of a wide range of changes in the four independent variables (the inlet-to-wall temperature difference and the inlet values of gas concentration, Reynolds number, and pressure) on the film thickness, axial pressure gradient, and the local and average Nusselt numbers are carefully examined. It was found that increases in inlet concentration of noncondensable gas caused significant decreases in the film thickness, local Nusselt number, and axial pressure gradient. An analytical solution for the film thickness and velocity field at the end of condensation path was developed and shown to be the asymptotic value of the numerical results for large distances along the channel.  相似文献

The characteristics of the critical heat flux (CHF) for downward flow were studied experimentally with an Inconel 600 circular tube test section in a water test loop at low-flow rate (0 200 kg/m2s) and low-pressure (0.1 0.7 MPa) conditions. The attention was given to the effects of upstream conditions—upper plenum and inlet throttling. Two totally different kinds of CHF behaviors were observed. It seems appropriate to interpret them as flooding-type CHF and dryout in annular flow. The CHF in downward flow may vary from extremely unstable flow CHF as low as near the flooding CHF value to stable flow CHF as high as that of upflow, depending on the upstream conditions of the test section. The CHF correlation by Mishima and that by Weber were proposed for the presentation of the lower and upper limits of the CHF for downward flow in a vertical tube at low-flow rate and low-pressure conditions.  相似文献

With reference to the example of a modified Taylor flow, the bifurcation of the loss of flow symmetry with the onset of a self-induced pressure gradient is studied theoretically and numerically. A linear analysis shows that the bifurcation is supercritical. It is necessarily accompanied by the appearance of a longitudinal pressure gradient and takes place at values of the parameters for which the solution of the linear system for the perturbations satisfies the condition of zero mass flow. It is established that, as a result of the bifurcation, two asymmetric solutions with oppositely directed pressure gradients are simultaneously generated. In the supercritical region, the symmetric branch of the solutions is also retained but becomes unstable. Bifurcation of the loss of symmetry and a self-induced pressure gradient can occur only in nonlinear systems.  相似文献

Recently, in order to describe the complex rheological behavior of polymer melts with long side branches like low density polyethylene, new constitutive equations called the pom-pom equations have been derived in the integral/differential form and also in the simplified differential type by McLeish and Larson on the basis of the reptation dynamics with simplified branch structure taken into account. In this study, mathematical stability analysis under short and high frequency wave disturbances has been performed for these constitutive equations. It is proved that the differential model is globally Hadamard stable, as long as the orientation tensor remains positive definite or the smooth strain history in the flow is previously given. However both versions of the model are Hadamard unstable if we neglect the arm withdrawal in the case of maximum backbone stretch. It is also dissipatively unstable, since the steady shear flow curves exhibit non-monotonic dependence on shear rate. Additionally, in the flow regime of creep shear flow where the applied constant shear stress exceeds the maximum achievable value in the steady flow curves, the constitutive equations exhibit severe instability that the solution possesses strong discontinuity at the moment of change of chain dynamics mechanisms. In the present paper the flow of a Bingham fluid between two parallel porous walls is studied. One of the walls moves with constant velocity parallel to the other, which is fixed, while a longitudinal pressure gradient exists, as well as a transverse flow field due the porosity of the walls. An exact analytical solution is given for the u-velocity field, which has four different forms depending on the values of the three dimensionless parameters, which are the Bingham, Couette and Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

Two phase pressure loss data are presented for angles from vertical upward to vertical downward for co-current air-water flow in a 4.55 cm diameter pipe operating at about atmospheric pressure. Detailed comparison with data from the literature indicated a substantial measure of agreement and showed that the method of data presentation suggested eliminates any effect on pressure loss of diameter, liquid density and system, but not that of liquid phase viscosity: Specific details are given on aspects of the measured frictional pressure loss from which it is deduced how energy losses can be minimised in two phase systems. In particular a total flow velocity of 15 ms?1 is recommended for most flow conditions in order to give a balance between flow capacity of the equipment and pressure loss.  相似文献

A relatively high formation pressure gradient can exist in seepage flow in low-permeable porous media with a threshold pressure gradient, and a significant error may then be caused in the model computation by neglecting the quadratic pressure gradient term in the governing equations. Based on these concerns, in consideration of the quadratic pressure gradient term, a basic moving boundary model is constructed for a one-dimensional seepage flow problem with a threshold pressure gradient. Owing to a strong nonlinearity and the existing moving boundary in the mathematical model, a corresponding numerical solution method is presented. First, a spatial coordinate transformation method is adopted in order to transform the system of partial differential equations with moving boundary conditions into a closed system with fixed boundary conditions; then the solution can be stably numerically obtained by a fully implicit finite-difference method. The validity of the numerical method is verified by a published exact analytical solution. Furthermore, to compare with Darcy’s flow problem, the exact analytical solution for the case of Darcy’s flow considering the quadratic pressure gradient term is also derived by an inverse Laplace transform. A comparison of these model solutions leads to the conclusion that such moving boundary problems must incorporate the quadratic pressure gradient term in their governing equations; the sensitive effects of the quadratic pressure gradient term tend to diminish, with the dimensionless threshold pressure gradient increasing for the one-dimensional problem.  相似文献

The models of the nonlinear radial flow for the infinite and finite reservoirs including a quadratic gradient term were presented. The exact solution was given in real space for flow equation including quadratic gradiet term for both constant-rate and constant pressure production cases in an infinite system by using generalized Weber transform.Analytical solutions for flow equation including quadratic gradient term were also obtained by using the Hankel transform for a finite circular reservoir case. Both closed and constant pressure outer boundary conditions are considered. Moreover, both constant rate and constant pressure inner boundary conditions are considered. The difference between the nonlinear pressure solution and linear pressure solution is analyzed. The difference may be reached about 8% in the long time. The effect of the quadratic gradient term in the large time well test is considered.  相似文献

In this article, the non-isothermal Poiseuille flow and its stability in a vertical annulus filled with porous medium are investigated. The flow is induced by external pressure gradient and buoyancy force due to linearly varying inner wall temperature. The non-Darcy model along with Boussinesq approximation has been used. The Chebyshev spectral-collocation method has been adopted to solve the governing equations related to basic flow as well as its stability. Special attention is given to understand the effect of curvature parameter of the annular geometry on the flow, heat transfer rate and stability of the stably stratified flow. A comprehensive numerical experiment indicates that reducing gap between two concentric cylinders decreases the heat transfer rate as well as the maximum magnitude of the flow velocity. It stabilizes the flow which has been shown through stability analysis. Furthermore, appropriateness of the Forchheimer term in the momentum equation has been examined by investigating the flow regime as well as its stability in the presence and absence of Forchheimer term. Finally, it has been found from the energy analysis at critical point that the thermal-buoyant instability is the only mode of instability for the considered range of different parameters.  相似文献

The present study has attempted to investigate phase inversion and frictional pressure gradients during simultaneous vertical flow of oil and water two-phase through upward and downward pipes. The liquids selected were white oil (44 mPa s viscosity and 860 kg/m3 density) and water. The measurements were made for phase velocities varying from 0 to 1.24 m/s for water and from 0 to 1.87 m/s for oil, respectively. Experiments were carried either by keeping the mixture velocity constant and increasing the dispersed phase fraction or by keeping the continuous phase superficial velocity constant and increasing the dispersed phase superficial velocity. From the experimental results, it is shown that the frictional pressure gradient reaches to its lower value at the phase inversion point in this work. The points of phase inversion are always close to an input oil fraction of 0.8 for upward flow and of 0.75 for downward flow, respectively. A few models published in the literature are used to predict the phase inversion point and to compare the results with available experimental data. Suitable methods are suggested to predict the critical oil holdup at phase inversion based on the different viscosity ratio ranges. Furthermore, the frictional pressure gradient is analyzed with several suitable theoretical models according to the existing flow patterns. The analysis reveals that both the theoretical curves and the experimental data exhibit the same trend and the overall agreement of predicted values with experimental data is good, especially for a high oil fraction.  相似文献

This paper presents the use of a parameter continuation method and a test function to solve the steady, axisymmetric incompressible Navier–Stokes equations for spherical Couette flow in a thin gap between two concentric, differentially rotating spheres. The study focuses principally on the prediction of multiple steady flow patterns and the construction of bifurcation diagrams. Linear stability analysis is conducted to determine whether or not the computed steady flow solutions are stable. In the case of a rotating inner sphere and a stationary outer sphere, a new unstable solution branch with two asymmetric vortex pairs is identified near the point of a symmetry-breaking pitchfork bifurcation which occurs at a Reynolds number equal to 789. This solution transforms smoothly into an unstable asymmetric 1-vortex solution as the Reynolds number increases. Another new pair of unstable 2-vortex flow modes whose solution branches are unconnected to previously known branches is calculated by the present two-parameter continuation method. In the case of two rotating spheres, the range of existence in the (Re 1 , Re 2 ) plane of the one and two vortex states, the vortex sizes as a function of both Reynolds numbers are identified. Bifurcation theory is used to discuss the origin of the calculated flow modes. Parameter continuation indicates that the stable states are accompanied by certain unstable states. We discuss how matrix-free/timestepper algorithms can efficiently be used with dynamic non-Newtonian fluid mechanics simulators in performing systematic stability/bifurcation analysis. The timestepper approach to bifurcation analysis of large-scale systems is applied to the plane Poiseuille flow of an Oldroyd-B fluid with non-monotonic slip at the wall, in order to further investigate a mechanism of extrusion instability based on the combination of viscoelasticity and non-monotonic slip. Due to the non-monotonicity of the slip equation the resulting steady-state flow curve is non-monotonic and unstable steady states appear in the negative-slope regime. It has been known that self-sustained oscillations of the pressure gradient are obtained when an unstable steady state is perturbed [M.M. Fyrillas, G.C. Georgiou, D. Vlassopoulos, S.G. Hatzikiriakos, A mechanism for extrusion instabilities in polymer melts, Polymer Eng. Sci. 39 (1999) 2498–2504].Treating the simulator of a distributed parameter model describing the dynamics of the above flow as an input–output “black-box” timestepper of the state variables, stable and unstable branches of both equilibrium and periodic oscillating solutions are computed and their stability is examined. It is shown for the first time how equilibrium solutions lose stability to oscillating ones through a subcritical Hopf bifurcation point which generates a branch of unstable limit cycles and how the stable periodic solutions lose their stability through a critical point which marks the onset of the unstable limit cycles. This implicates the coexistence of stable equilibria with stable and unstable periodic solutions in a narrow range of volumetric flow rates.  相似文献

The influence of heat transfer on the steady flow of a fourth‐grade fluid between two stationary parallel porous plates is studied. The flow is engendered under the application of a constant pressure gradient. The concept of homotopy analysis method is utilized for the series solution of the governing problem. Numerical solution has been also carried out. In addition, both analytic and numerical solutions are compared. The variations of embedded parameters into the solution are predicted through the graphical representations.

An analytical and numerical study is presented to show that buoyancy-opposed mixed convection in a vertical porous duct with circular cross-section is unstable. The duct wall is assumed to be impermeable and subject to a uniform heat flux. A stationary and parallel Darcy’s flow with a non-uniform radial velocity profile is taken as a basic state. Stability to small-amplitude perturbations is investigated by adopting the method of normal modes. It is proved that buoyancy-opposed mixed convection is linearly unstable, for every value of the Darcy–Rayleigh number, associated with the wall heat flux, and for every mass flow rate parametrised by the Péclet number. Axially invariant perturbation modes and general three-dimensional modes are investigated. The stability analysis of the former modes is carried out analytically, while general three-dimensional modes are studied numerically. An asymptotic analytical solution is found, suitable for three-dimensional modes with sufficiently small wave number and/or Péclet number. The general conclusion is that the onset of instability selects the axially invariant modes. Among them, the radially invariant and azimuthally invariant mode turns out to be the most unstable for all possible buoyancy-opposed flows.  相似文献
