This paper presents a numerical method for simulating turbulent flows via coupling the Boltzmann BGK equation with Spalart–Allmaras one equation turbulence model. Both the Boltzmann BGK equation and the turbulence model equation are carried out using the finite volume method on unstructured meshes, which is different from previous works on structured grid. The application of the gas‐kinetic scheme is extended to the simulation of turbulent flows with arbitrary geometries. The adaptive mesh refinement technique is also adopted to reduce the computational cost and improve the efficiency of meshes. To organize the unstructured mesh data structure efficiently, a non‐manifold hybrid mesh data structure is extended for polygonal cells. Numerical experiments are performed on incompressible flow over a smooth flat plate and compressible turbulent flows around a NACA 0012 airfoil using unstructured hybrid meshes. These numerical results are found to be in good agreement with experimental data and/or other numerical solutions, demonstrating the applicability of the proposed method to simulate both subsonic and transonic turbulent flows.

In this work, a hybrid numerical approach to predict the vibrational responses of planar structures excited by a turbulent boundary layer is presented. The approach combines an uncorrelated wall plane wave technique with the finite element method. The wall pressure field induced by a turbulent boundary layer is obtained as a set of uncorrelated wall pressure plane waves. The amplitude of these plane waves are determined from the cross spectrum density function of the wall pressure field given either by empirical models from literature or from experimental data. The response of the planar structure subject to a turbulent boundary layer excitation is then obtained from an ensemble average of the different realizations. The numerical technique is computationally efficient as it rapidly converges using a small number of realizations. To demonstrate the method, the vibrational responses of two panels with simply supported or clamped boundary conditions and excited by a turbulent flow are considered. In the case study comprising a plate with simply supported boundary conditions, an analytical solution is employed for verification of the method. For both cases studies, numerical results from the hybrid approach are compared with experimental data measured in two different anechoic wind tunnels.

Fully developed turbulent pipe flow at low Re-number is studied by means of direct numerical simulation (DNS). In contrast to many previous DNS's of turbulent flows in rectangular geometries, the present DNS code, developed for a cylindrical geometry, is based on the finite volume technique rather than being based on a spectral method. The statistical results are compared with experimental data obtained with two different experimental techniques. The agreement between numerical and experimental results is found to be good which indicates that the present DNS code is suited for this kind of numerical simulations.

A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code based on the method of lines (MOL) approach was developed for the solution of transient, two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible separated internal flows in complex rectangular geometries. The predictive accuracy of the code was tested by applying it to the prediction of flow fields in both laminar and turbulent channel flows with and without sudden expansion, and comparing its predictions with either measured data or numerical results available in the literature. The predicted flow fields were found to be in favorable agreement with those available in the literature for laminar channel flow with sudden expansion and turbulent channel flow with Re=6600. The code was then applied to the prediction of the highly turbulent flow field in the inlet flue of a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). The predicted flow field was found to display the same trend with the experimental findings and numerical solutions reported previously for a turbulent diverging duct. As the code uses the MOL approach in conjunction with (i) an intelligent higher-order spatial discretization scheme, (ii) a parabolic algorithm for pressure, and (iii) an elliptic grid generator using a body-fitted coordinate system for complex geometries, it provides an efficient algorithm for future direct numerical simulation (DNS) applications in complex rectangular geometries.

A preconditioning approach based on the artificial compressibility formulation is extended to solve the governing equations for unsteady turbulent reactive flows with heat release, at low Mach numbers, on an unstructured hybrid grid context. Premixed reactants are considered and a flamelet approach for combustion modelling is adopted using a continuous quenched mean reaction rate. An overlapped cell‐vertex finite volume method is adopted as a discretisation scheme. Artificial dissipation terms for hybrid grids are explicitly added to ensure a stable, discretised set of equations. A second‐order, explicit, hybrid Runge–Kutta scheme is applied for the time marching in pseudo‐time. A time derivative of the dependent variable is added to recover the time accuracy of the preconditioned set of equations. This derivative is discretised by an implicit, second‐order scheme. The resulting scheme is applied to the calculation of an infinite planar (one‐dimensional) turbulent premixed flame propagating freely in reactants whose turbulence is supposed to be frozen, homogeneous and isotropic. The accuracy of the results obtained with the proposed method proves to be excellent when compared to the data available in the literature. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We present a finite element (FE) formulation of Lighthill's acoustic analogy for the hybrid computation of noise generated by turbulent flows. In the present approach, the flow field is computed using large eddy simulation and scale adaptive simulation turbulence models. The acoustic propagation is obtained by solving the variational formulation of Lighthill's acoustic analogy with the FE method. In order to preserve the acoustic energy, we compute the inhomogeneous part of Lighthill's wave equation by applying the FE formulation on the fine flow grid. The resulting acoustic nodal loads are then conservatively interpolated to the coarser acoustic grid. Subsequently, the radiated acoustic field can be solved in both time and frequency domains. In the latter case, an enhanced perfectly matched layer technique is employed, allowing one to truncate the computational domain in the acoustic near field, without compromising the numerical solution. Our hybrid approach is validated by comparing the numerical results of the acoustic field induced by a corotating vortex pair with the corresponding analytical solution. To demonstrate the applicability of our scheme, we present full 3D numerical results for the computed acoustic field generated by the turbulent flow around square cylinder geometries. The sound pressure levels obtained compare well with measured values. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Steady turbulent viscous incompressible fluid flow in a plane channel is calculated for the case of uniform blowing and suction through opposite walls. There are no experimental data for flows of this type. The flows were calculated by two methods: a direct numerical simulation method and using a three-parameter turbulence model. Direct numerical simulation was carried out using the same (apart from the boundary conditions) algorithm for numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations as that used earlier for calculating flows in pipes and channels with impermeable walls. In the second group of calculations the version of the model published in 1978 was used. The results obtained by the two methods are in good agreement. The difference is within the spread of the experimental data used for determining the parameters of the model. The agreement obtained makes it possible to assert that the turbulence direct numerical simulation algorithm developed can be used for the analysis of flows with quite different boundary conditions, including cases where there are no corresponding experimental data. Large eddy simulation (LES) is a viable and powerful tool to analyse unsteady three-dimensional turbulent flows. In this article, the method of LES is used to compute a plane turbulent supersonic boundary layer subjected to different pressure gradients. The pressure gradients are generated by allowing the flow to pass in the vicinity of an expansion–compression ramp (inclined backward-facing step with leeward-face angle of 25°) for an upstream Mach number of 2.9. The inflow boundary condition is the main problem for all turbulent wall-bounded flows. An approach to solve this problem is to extract instantaneous velocities, temperature and density data from an auxiliary simulation (inflow generator). To generate an appropriate realistic inflow condition to the inflow generator itself the rescaling technique for compressible flows is used. In this method, Morkovin's hypothesis, in which the total temperature fluctuations are neglected compared with the static temperature fluctuations, is applied to rescale and generate the temperature profile at inlet. This technique was successfully developed and applied by the present author for an LES of subsonic three-dimensional boundary layer of a smooth curved ramp. The present LES results are compared with the available experimental data as well as numerical data. The positive impact of the rescaling formulation of the temperature is proven by the convincing agreement of the obtained results with the experimental data compared with published numerical work and sheds light on the quality of the developed compressible inflow generator.

The aim of this work is to present a new numerical method to compute turbulent flows in complex configurations. With this in view, a k-? model with wall functions has been introduced in a mixed finite volume/finite element method. The numerical method has been developed to deal with compressible flows but is also able to compute nearly incompressible flows. The physical model and the numerical method are first described, then validation results for an incompressible flow over a backward-facing step and for a supersonic flow over a compression ramp are presented. Comparisons are performed with experimental data and with other numerical results. These simulations show the ability of the present method to predict turbulent flows, and this method will be applied to simulate complex industrial flows (flow inside the combustion chamber of gas turbine engines). The main goal of this paper is not to test turbulence models, but to show that this numerical method is a solid base to introduce more sophisticated turbulence model.

The presence of a turbulent premixed flame strongly influences the properties of the adjacent velocity boundary layer. This influence is studied here using a generic configuration where at atmospheric pressure turbulent premixed methane/air flames interact with a temperature stabilized wall. The experiment is optimized for well-defined boundary conditions and optical accessibility in the zone where the flame impinges at the wall. Laser based diagnostic methods are used to measure two components of the velocity field by particle image velocimetry simultaneously with the flame front position using laser induced fluorescence of the OH molecule. Two measurement planes are selected that are aligned perpendicularly to the surface of the wall. Based on this data, the flow field near the wall is analyzed by different methodologies using laboratory-fixed and flame-conditioned statistics, a quadrant splitting analysis of the Reynolds stresses and an evaluation of the production term of the turbulent kinetic energy. The results of chemically reactive cases are compared to their corresponding non-reactive flows for otherwise identical inflow conditions. In the zone of flame-wall interactions the boundary layer structure and its turbulence are dominated by the turbulent flame. Important features are that the flame compresses the boundary layer already upstream the location where the flame is finally quenched and that ejection and sweeps are no longer the dominant mechanisms as in non-reactive boundary layers. This experimental data may serve additionally as a database for model development for near wall reactive flows.

The time-dependent turbulent Navier–Stokes equations are solved numerically by a finite element method with an algebraic eddy viscosity model (Baldwin–Lomax formulation) for oscillating turbulent channel flows. The method of averaging is used to analyse the resulting periodic motion of the fluid. Numerical results are obtained for various Strouhal numbers and relative amplitudes. A comparison is made between the numerical and published experimental results. It appears that for low relative amplitudes in a certain range of frequencies the agreement is satisfactory.

The QUICKER scheme extended for non-uniform rectangular grid systems has been applied to predict the turbulent offset jet flows. Computational results obtained with the QUICKER scheme are compared with those from the skew-upwind and the hybrid schemes. Computational results include the reattachment length, the velocity profile, the axial velocity decay curve, and the shear stress distribution. In the sense of an overall agreement with the experimental data, the QUICKER scheme is found to be superior to the other two schemes. Boundary conditions are carefully set up to account for various flow conditions. Special attention has been given to the set-up of entrainment boundary condition. It is emphasized that the numerical diffusion due to streamline-to-grid skewness far exceeds the turbulent diffusion in offset jet flows; therefore, a numerical scheme that would minimize the numerical diffusion is a prerequisite for a better prediction of the turbulent offset jet flows.

A control-volume based finite element method of equal-order type for three-dimensional incompressible turbulent fluid flow, heat transfer, and related phenomena is presented. The discretization equations are based mainly on the physics of the phenomena under consideration, more than on mathematical arguments. Special emphasis is devoted to the discretization of the convective terms and the continuity equation, and to the treatment of the boundary conditions imposed by the use of a high Reynolds k-?, type turbulence model. The pressure-velocity coupling in the fluid flow calculation is made from a derivative of the original SIMPLER method, without pressure correction. The discretized equations are solved in a sequential, rather than a coupled, form with significant advantage in the required computer time and storage. The method is an extension of a former version proposed by us for two-dimensional, laminar problems, and is here successfully applied to the following situations: three-dimensional deflected turbulent jet, and flows in 90° and 45° junctions of ducts with rectangular cross sections. The calculated results are in very good agreement with the experimental and numerical (obtained with the well established finite difference method) data available in the literature.

The results of direct numerical simulation of turbulent flows of non-Newtonian pseudoplastic fluids in a straight pipe are presented. The data on the distributions of the turbulent stress tensor components and the shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy balances are obtained for steady turbulent flows at the Reynolds numbers of 104 and 2×104. As distinct from Newtonian fluid flows, the viscous shear stresses turn out to be significant even far from the wall. In power-law fluid flows the mechanism of the energy transport from axial to transverse component fluctuations is suppressed. It is shown that with decrease in the fluid index the turbulent transfer of the momentum and the velocity fluctuations between the wall layer and the flow core reduces, while the turbulent energy flux toward the wall increases. The earlier-proposed models for the average viscosity and the non-Newtonian one-point correlations are in good agreement with the data of direct numerical simulation.

A coupled Lagrangian interface‐tracking and Eulerian level set (LS) method is developed and implemented for numerical simulations of two‐fluid flows. In this method, the interface is identified based on the locations of notional particles and the geometrical information concerning the interface and fluid properties, such as density and viscosity, are obtained from the LS function. The LS function maintains a signed distance function without an auxiliary equation via the particle‐based Lagrangian re‐initialization technique. To assess the new hybrid method, numerical simulations of several ‘standard interface‐moving’ problems and two‐fluid laminar and turbulent flows are conducted. The numerical results are evaluated by monitoring the mass conservation, the turbulence energy spectral density function and the consistency between Eulerian and Lagrangian components. The results of our analysis indicate that the hybrid particle‐level set method can handle interfaces with complex shape change, and can accurately predict the interface values without any significant (unphysical) mass loss or gain, even in a turbulent flow. The results obtained for isotropic turbulence by the new particle‐level set method are validated by comparison with those obtained by the ‘zero Mach number’, variable‐density method. For the cases with small thermal/mass diffusivity, both methods are found to generate similar results. Analysis of the vorticity and energy equations indicates that the destabilization effect of turbulence and the stability effect of surface tension on the interface motion are strongly dependent on the density and viscosity ratios of the fluids. The reacting flow in a research lean direct injection (LDI) hydrogen combustor and the static stall of NACA0012 airfoil were simulated using both Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) and partially resolved numerical simulation (PRNS) approaches. The concept and the main features of the PRNS approach are briefly described. The PRNS basic equations are grid independent or grid invariant; the subscale models are a dynamic equation system. We consider PRNS as an engineering tool for the very large eddy simulation of complex turbulent flows. Two CFD codes, NCC and Wind-US, with two different subscale models (i.e. two- and one-transport equation models, respectively) are used in the presented PRNS simulations. Based on the comparisons with available experimental data, the numerical results indicate that the PRNS subscale models seem to be able to capture important large scale turbulent structures and to improve the quality of numerical simulations while keeping a relatively low cost comparable to the unsteady RANS simulations.

This paper presents a review of authors' collective works in the field of two-phase flow modeling done in the past few decades. The paper is aimed at the construction of mathematical models for simulation of particle-laden turbulent flows. A kinetic equation was obtained for the probability density function (PDF) of the particle velocity distribution in turbulent flows. The proposed kinetic equation describes both the interaction of particles with turbulent eddies of the carrier phase and particle-particle collisions. This PDF equation is used for the derivation of different schemes describing turbulent momentum transfer in the dispersed particle phase. The turbulent characteristics of the gaseous phase are calculated on the basis of the k - turbulence model with a modulation effect of particles on the turbulence.

The constructed models have been applied to the calculation of various two-phase gas-particle turbulent flows in jets and channels as well as particle deposition in tubes and separators. For validating the theoretical and numerical results, a wide range of comparisons with experimental data from Russian and foreign sources has been done.
