This article presents a numerical study on the influence of span length and wall temperature on the 3-D flow pattern around a square section vortex promoter located inside a micro-channel in the low Reynolds number regime. The first objective of the work is to quantify the critical Reynolds number that defines the onset of vortex shedding and to identify the different regimes that appear as a function of the channel aspect ratio (span to height ratio). We found that the critical Reynolds number for the onset of the Karman street regime increases as the aspect ratio decreases. In particular, for the aspect ratio of 1/2 the critical Reynolds number is nearly six times the critical Reynolds number of the 2-D problem. An intermediate oscillating regime between the steady and the Karman street solutions was also found to exist within a rather wide range of Reynolds numbers for small channel aspect ratios. The second objective was to investigate the influence of the vortex promoter wall temperature on both vortex shedding and flow pattern. This has practical engineering implications because the working fluid considered in the article is water that has a viscosity that depends significantly on temperature and promotes a strong coupling between the momentum and energy equations that influences the system behaviour. Results indicate that high surface temperature on the prism promotes the onset of the Karman street, suggesting design guidelines for micro-channel based heat sinks that make use of vortex promoters.  相似文献

The equations governing the flow of a viscous fluid in a two‐dimensional channel with weakly modulated walls have been solved using a perturbation approach, coupled to a variable‐step finite‐difference scheme. The solution is assumed to be a superposition of a mean and perturbed field. The perturbation results were compared to similar results from a classical finite‐volume approach to quantify the error. The influence of the wall geometry and flow Reynolds number have extensively been investigated. It was found that an explicit relation exists between the critical Reynolds number, at which the wall flow separates, and the dimensionless amplitude and wavelength of the wall modulation. Comparison of the flow shows that the perturbation method requires much less computational effort without sacrificing accuracy. The differences in predicted flow is kept well around the order of the square of the dimensionless amplitude, the order to which the regular perturbation expansion of the flow variables is carried out. The steady flow inside a spatially modulated channel is examined for shear‐thinning and shear‐thickening fluids. The flow is induced by the translation of the lower plate. The modulation amplitude is assumed to be small. A regular perturbation expansion of the flow field is used, coupled to a variable‐step finite‐difference scheme, to solve the problem. Convergence and accuracy assessment against finite‐volume calculations indicates that there is a significant range of validity of the perturbation approach. The influence of the wall geometry, inertia and non‐Newtonian effects are investigated systematically. In particular, the influence of the flow and fluid parameters is examined on the conditions for the onset of separation, vortex size and location. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The experimental results of studying the effect of homogeneous stratification of the fluid on the conditions of generation of a Kárman vortex street [1] developing in the wake of a cylinder in steady horizontal motion are described. In a homogeneous medium at Reynolds numbers Re >5 two symmetrical regions of vorticity of opposite sign are formed behind the cylinder and move together with the latter. As the speed of the cylinder increases, the link between the vortices and the cylinder grows weaker, the vortices are stretched out along the flow and at Re > 40 begin to separate alternately, forming a vortex street in the wake. At first, the frequency of vortex separation increases sharply with increase in Re, but then levels off. It is found that in a uniformly stratified fluid the onset of vortex separation from the moving cylinder is delayed. The dependence of the critical Reynolds number (onset of vortex separation) on the internal Froude number is obtained. The effect of stratification of the fluid on the frequency of separation of the vortices in the Kármán street is investigated. The effect of the Froude number on the dependence of the Strouhal number on the Reynolds number is established.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 1, pp. 83–86, January–February, 1986.In conclusion the authors wish to thank A. The effect of shear thinning on the stability of the Taylor–Couette flow is explored for a Carreau–Bird fluid in the narrow‐gap limit. The Galerkin projection method is used to derive a low‐order dynamical system from the conservation of mass and momentum equations. In comparison with the Newtonian system, the present equations include additional non‐linear coupling in the velocity components through the viscosity. It is found that the critical Taylor number, corresponding to the loss of stability of the circular Couette flow, becomes lower as the shear‐thinning effect increases. That is, shear thinning tends to precipitate the onset of Taylor vortex flow, which coincides with the onset of a supercritical bifurcation. Comparison with existing measurements of the effect of shear thinning on the critical Taylor and wave numbers show good agreement. The Taylor vortex cellular structure loses its stability in turn, as the Taylor number reaches a critical value. At this point, an inverse Hopf bifurcation emerges. In contrast to Newtonian flow, the bifurcation diagrams exhibit a turning point that sharpens with shear‐thinning effect. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Three‐dimensional computations have been performed to study the flow through a symmetric sudden expansion with an expansion ratio of 3 at low Reynolds numbers. The aspect ratio of the flow channel is allowed to vary within a wide range to examine its influence on the flow which bifurcates from a symmetric state to an asymmetric state. The results reveal that the critical Reynolds number of the symmetry‐breaking bifurcation increases while the aspect ratio is reduced. The flow behaviour near the side walls is illustrated by using limiting streamlines. The origin of the singular points identifiable on the side wall can be traced back to the recirculating flows and the relevant reattachment/separation points in the core of the channel. It is seen that the determination of the exact critical Reynolds number is not trivial because it depends on how to define asymmetric flow. Computations have also been conducted to show that a slight asymmetry in the channel geometry causes a smooth transition from symmetric to non‐symmetric states. A continuation method has been used with a finite element grid and a geometric perturbation to compute two successive symmetry breaking flow transitions with increasing Reynolds number in flow of generalized Newtonian fluids through a sudden planar expansion. With an expansion ratio of 16, the onset Reynolds number is particularly sensitive to small geometric asymmetry and the critical Reynolds numbers for the two successive flow transitions are found to be very close. These transitions are delayed to higher onset Reynolds numbers by increasing the degree of pseudoplasticity. This trend is observed experimentally as well in this work and may be attributed to the competing effects of shear thinning and inertia on the size of the corner vortex before the symmetry breaking flow transition. After the second transition with an expansion ratio of 16, the two large staggered vortices on opposite walls occupy most of the transverse dimension so that the core flow between the vortices appears as a thin jet oscillating along the flow direction. This is more pronounced for the pseudoplastic liquid. After the second transition, the degree of flow asymmetry at a given location downstream of the expansion plane is larger for the pseudoplastic liquid than for the Newtonian liquid at comparable Reynolds numbers. The last feature is also evident in the experimentally observed velocity profiles. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Flow behaviour of viscoelastic polymer solutions on the upstream side of an annular die entry has been experimentally investigated and compared with published results on entry flow in circular die. Stable and unstable flow patterns were observed depending on the magnitudes of Reynolds and elasticity numbers. The latter number represents the relative effects of elastic and inertial forces. The stable flow region consists of an elasticity-controlled vortex growth regime and an inertia-controlled divergent flow regime. These two flow regimes have also been observed in circular entry flow. The criteria for the onset of flow instability in an annulus, based on the maximum vortex size, agree qualitatively with various criteria proposed for polymer metls and solutions in circular entry flow. The unstable flow patterns revealed a two-stage instability with a metastable region in between. The first-stage instability is characterised by low frequency disruption of the stationary vortex; while the second-stage instability, which occurs at high Reynolds numbers, is characterised by high frequency random distortion of the flow field.  相似文献

Viscoelastic flow around a confined cylinder at high Deborah numbers is studied using microfluidic channels. By varying fluid properties and flow rates, a systematic study of the roles of elasticity and inertia is accomplished. Two new elastic flow instabilities that occur at high Deborah numbers are identified. A downstream instability of disordered and temporally varying streamlines is observed at a Deborah number above 10. This instability is a precursor to an unsteady vortex that develops upstream of the cylinder at higher Deborah numbers. Both instabilities occur at moderate Reynolds numbers but are fundamentally elastic. The size and steadiness of the upstream vortex are primarily controlled by the Deborah and the elasticity number.  相似文献

A numerical study on the flow past a square cylinder placed parallel to a wall, which is moving at the speed of the far field has been made. Flow has been investigated in the laminar Reynolds number (based on the cylinder length) range. We have studied the flow field for different values of the cylinder to wall separation length. The governing unsteady Navier–Stokes equations are discretized through the finite volume method on a staggered grid system. A SIMPLE type of algorithm has been used to compute the discretized equations iteratively. A shear layer of negative vortex generates along the surface of the wall, which influences the vortex shedding behind the cylinder. The flow‐field is distinct from the flow in presence of a stationary wall. An alternate vortex shedding occurs for all values of gap height in the unsteady regime of the flow. The strong positive vortex pushes the negative vortex upwards in the wake. The gap flow in the undersurface of the cylinder is strong and the velocity profile overshoots. The cylinder experiences a downward force for certain values of the Reynolds number and gap height. The drag and lift are higher at lower values of the Reynolds number. The effect of time-periodic temperature modulation at the onset of convection in a Boussinesq porous medium saturated by a nanofluid is studied analytically. The model used for the nanofluid incorporates the effects of Brownian motion. Three types of boundary temperature modulations are considered namely, symmetric, asymmetric, and only the lower wall temperature is modulated while the upper wall is held at constant temperature. The perturbation method is applied for computing the critical Rayleigh and wave numbers for small amplitude temperature modulation. The shift in the critical Rayleigh number is calculated as a function of frequency of modulation, concentration Rayleigh number, porosity, Lewis number, and thermal capacity ratio. It has been shown that it is possible to advance or delay the onset of convection by time-periodic modulation of the wall temperature. The nanofluid is found to have more stabilizing effect when compared to regular fluid. Low frequency is destabilizing, while high frequency is always stabilizing for symmetric modulation. Asymmetric modulation and only lower wall temperature modulation is stabilizing for all frequencies when concentration Rayleigh number is greater than one.  相似文献

Axisymmetrically stable turbulent Taylor vortices between two concentric cylinders are studied with respect to the transition from vortex to wall driven turbulent production. The outer cylinder is stationary and the inner cylinder rotates. A low Reynolds number turbulence model using the kω formulation, facilitates an analysis of the velocity gradients in the Taylor–Couette flow. For a fixed inner radius, three radius ratios 0.734, 0.941 and 0.985 are employed to identify the Reynolds number range at which this transition occurs. At relatively low Reynolds numbers, turbulent production is shown to be dominated by the outflowing boundary of the Taylor vortex. As the Reynolds number increases, shear driven turbulence (due to the rotating cylinder) becomes the dominating factor. For relatively small gaps turbulent flow is shown to occur at Taylor numbers lower than previously reported. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Two‐dimensional flows past a stationary circular cylinder near a plane boundary are numerically simulated using an immersed interface method with second‐order accuracy. Instead of a fixed wall, a moving wall with no‐slip boundary is considered to avoid the complex involvement of the boundary layer and to focus only on the shear‐free wall proximity effects for investigating the force dynamics and flow fields. To analyze the convergence and accuracy of our implementation, numerical studies have been first performed on a simple test problem of rotational flow, where the second order of convergence is confirmed through numerical experiments and an optimal range of relative grid‐match ratio of Lagrangian to Eulerian grid sizes has been recommended. By comparing the force quantities and the Strouhal number, the accuracy of this method has been demonstrated on the flow past a stationary isolated cylinder. The cylinder is then put in proximity to the wall to investigate the shear‐free wall proximity effects in the low Reynolds number regime (20≤Re≤200). The gap ratio, e/D, where e denotes the gap between the cylinder and the moving wall and D denotes the diameter of the cylinder, is taken from 0.10 to 2.00 to determine the critical gap ratio, (e/D)critical, for the alternate vortex shedding, where the fluid forces, flow fields and the streamwise velocity profiles are studied. One of the key findings is that the (e/D)critical for the alternate vortex shedding decreases as the Reynolds number increases. We also find that, in this low Reynolds number regime, the mean drag coefficient increases and peaks at e/D = 0.5 with the increase of e/D and keeps decreasing gently from e/D = 0.5 to e/D = 2.0, while the mean lift coefficient decreases monotonically with the increase of e/D. New correlations are then proposed for computing force coefficients as a function of Re and e/D for a cylinder in the vicinity of a moving plane wall. The effects of vortex Reynolds number on the statistics of turbulence in a turbulent boundary layer have been investigated. Vortex Reynolds number is defined as the ratio of circulation around the vortex structure to the fluid viscosity. The vortex structure of the outer region was modeled and a full numerical simulation was then conducted using a high-order spectral method. A unit domain of the outer region of a turbulent boundary layer was assumed to be composed of essentially three elements: a wall, a Blasius mean shear, and an elliptic vortex inclined at 45° to the flow direction. The laminar base-flow Reynolds number is roughly in the same range as that of a turbulent boundary layer based on eddy viscosity, and the vortex-core diameter based on the boundary-layer thickness is nearly the same as the maximum mixing length in a turbulent boundary layer. The computational box size, namely, 500, 150, and 250 wall units in the streamwise, surface-normal, and spanwise directions, respectively, is approximately the same as the measured quasi-periodic spacings of the near-wall turbulence-producing events in a turbulent boundary layer. The effects of vortex Reynolds number and the signs of the circulation on the moments of turbulence were examined. The signs mimic the ejection and sweep types of organized motions of a turbulent boundary layer. A vortex Reynolds number of 200 describes the turbulence moments in the outer layer reasonably well.  相似文献

The investigations of forebody vortex flow and its flow control have great importance in both academic field and engineering application areas. A large number of papers and many review papers have been published. However in this research field of forebody asymmetric vortices, three problems such as tip perturbation effect, Reynolds number effect and flow instability are less studied and thus not understood completely. So many researches are still working on the issues in recent years. The present paper attempts to provide a review of recent research progress on first two problems. The first problem is mainly concerned with how the vortex flow evolves after tip perturbation; how to solve the problem of repeatability and reproducibility of wind tunnel testing data; how to develop a conception of active flow control technique with tip perturbation based on the study of vortex flow response to tip perturbation. For the second problem one is mainly concerned that how the asymmetric vortices are developed with the increase of Reynolds number; how to classify the vortex flow patterns in different Reynolds number regimes; how to develop an appropriate boundary layer transition technique to simulate flows at high Reynolds number in the convention wind tunnels. Finally, some important ques- tions that deserve answers are proposed in the concluding remarks.  相似文献

The pulsatile flow of blood through a catheterized artery is analyzed, assuming the blood as a two-fluid model with the suspension of all the erythrocytes in the core region as a Casson fluid and the peripheral region of plasma as a Newtonian fluid. The resulting non-linear implicit system of partial differential equations is solved using perturbation method. The expressions for shear stress, velocity, flow rate, wall shear stress and longitudinal impedance are obtained. The variations of these flow quantities with yield stress, catheter radius ratio, amplitude, pulsatile Reynolds number ratio and peripheral layer thickness are discussed. It is observed that the velocity distribution and flow rate decrease, while, the wall shear, width of the plug flow region and longitudinal impedance increase when the yield stress increases. It is also found that the velocity increases, but, the longitudinal impedance decreases when the thickness of the peripheral layer increases. The wall shear stress decreases non-linearly, while, the longitudinal impedance increases non-linearly when the catheter radius ratio increases. The estimates of the increase in the longitudinal impedance are considerably lower for the present two-fluid model than those of the single-fluid model.  相似文献

The effect of an axial flow on the stability of the Taylor–Couette flow is explored for pseudoplastic fluids. The fluid is assumed to follow the Carreau–Bird model and mixed boundary conditions are imposed while the axial flow can be independent of rotational flow. The four-dimensional low-order dynamical system, resulted from Galerkin projection of the conservation of mass and momentum equations, includes additional non-linear terms in the velocity components originated from the shear-dependent viscosity. In absence of axial flow the base flow loses its radial flow stability to the vortex structure at a lower critical Taylor number, as the pseudoplasticity effects increases. The emergence of the vortices corresponds to the onset of a supercritical bifurcation which is also seen in the flow of a linear fluid. However, unlike the Newtonian case, pseudoplastic Taylor vortices lose their stability as the Taylor number reaches a second critical number corresponding to the onset of a Hopf bifurcation. Existence of an axial flow, induced by a pressure gradient appears to further advance each critical point on the bifurcation diagram. Complete flow field together with viscosity maps are given for stability regions in the bifurcation diagram.  相似文献

Results from an experimental and numerical study of the flow generated by a sphere immersed in fluid, impacting normally without rebound on a solid wall, are presented. The parameters are the running distance before impact and the sphere Reynolds number. For running lengths less than 7.5 diameters, the sphere wake before impact is axisymmetric in the form of an attached vortex ring. After impact, this ring overtakes the sphere and spreads out along the wall. For Reynolds numbers below 1000, the flow remains axisymmetric at all times. For higher values, perturbations of azimuthal wavenumbers 20–25 are observed on the vortex ring, leading to a breakdown of the flow. We analyse different hypotheses concerning the origin of this instability, with the conclusion that a centrifugal instability mechanism is likely to be acting in this flow. Comparisons are made with the flow involving an isolated vortex ring approaching a wall. Numerical simulations of this case have revealed that two distinct instability mechanisms are operating, one of which appears to be similar to the centrifugal instability observed for the sphere impact.  相似文献
