Modification of shear stress due to air bubbles injection in a rotary device was investigated experimentally. Air bubbles inject to the water flow crosses the neighbor of the hub which can rotate just by water flow shear stresses, in this device. Increasing air void fraction leads to decrease of shear stresses exerted on the hub surface until in high void fractions, the hub motion stopped as observed. Amount of skin friction decrease has been estimated by counting central hub rotations. Wall shear stress was decreased by bubble injection in all range of tested Reynolds number, changing from 50,378 to 71,238, and also by increasing air void fraction from zero to 3.06%. Skin friction reduction more than 85% was achieved in this study as maximum measured volume of air fraction injected to fluid flow while bubbles are distinct and they do not make a gas layer. Significant skin friction reduction obtained in this special case indicate that using small amount of bubble injection causes large amount of skin friction reduction in some rotary parts in the liquid phases like as water.  相似文献

The air bubble rise velocity in still water depends mainly on the bubble size and is basically influenced by buoyancy, viscosity and surface tension. In high-speed flows the number of forces acting on air bubbles increases with turbulence, non-hydrostatic pressure gradient, shear forces, bubble clouds and free-surface entrainment. Air bubbles in these flows are used for cavitation protection of hydraulic structures such as chutes, spillways and bottom outlets. Here, air is normally added by means of aerators upstream of regions where the cavitation number falls below a critical value mainly to reduce the sonic velocity of the fluid and cushion the cavitation bubble collapse process. The distance between successive aerators depends basically on the bubble rise velocity. Until today, the bubble rise velocity in high-speed flows was not thoroughly investigated because of limited laboratory instrumentation. The present project focused on the streamwise development of air concentrations in high-speed flows along a 14 m long model chute. The bubble rise velocity was indirectly derived from the air detrainment gradient of the air concentration contour lines downstream of an aeration device. It accounts for the main hydraulic parameters chute slope, Froude number and air concentration. It is demonstrated that the bubble rise velocity in high-speed flow and stagnant water differ significantly due to fracturing processes, turbulence, and the ambient air concentration.  相似文献

A hydraulic jump is a flow singularity characterised by a significant amount of air entrainment in the shear zone. The air is entrapped at the jump toe that is a discontinuity between the impinging flow and the roller. The impingement point is a source of air bubbles, as well as a source of vorticity. Herein the convective transport of air bubbles in the jump roller is re-visited. Some analytical extension is presented and the theoretical results are compared with some laboratory experiments conducted in a large-size facility operating at large Froude numbers. The turbulent air bubble mixing coefficient was found to increase linearly with increasing distance and be independent of the Froude and Reynolds numbers. Overall the study highlighted some seminal features of the air–water shear layer in hydraulic jumps with large Froude numbers (5.1 < Fr1 < 11.2). The air bubble entrainment in the mixing zone was a convective transport process, although there was some rapid flow de-aeration for all Froude numbers.  相似文献

This study deals with the influence of bubbles on a vertical air–water pipe flow, for gas-lift applications. The effect of changing the bubble size is of particular interest as it has been shown to affect the pressure drop over the pipe. Local measurements on the bubbles characteristics in the wall region were performed, using standard techniques, such as high-speed video recording and optical fibre probe, and more specific techniques, such as two-phase hot film anemometry for the wall shear stress and conductivity measurement for the thickness of the liquid film at the wall. The injection of macroscopic air bubbles in a pipe flow was shown to increase the wall shear stress. Bubbles travelling close to the wall create a periodic perturbation. The injection of small bubbles amplifies this effect, because they tend to move in the wall region; hence, more bubbles are travelling close to the wall. A simple analysis based on a two-fluid set of equations emphasised the importance of the local gas fraction fluctuations on the wall shear stress.  相似文献

The formation of air bubbles injected into a stagnant, isothermal liquid in microgravity through an orifice was studied. The bubbles grew very large in microgravity. They attained a nearly spherical shape and showed pronounced affinity towards coalescence in the absence of electric fields and other perturbations. Under the influence of electric fields, periodic detachment was observed, with bubble sizes larger than in terrestrial conditions. The bubble shape was elongated. After detachment, the bubbles moved away from the electrode at which they formed without coalescing with other bubbles. Experimental data on bubble shape and size at detachment showed good agreement with models. Received: 26 March 2001 / Accepted: 16 August 2001  相似文献

We performed laboratory experiments on bubbly channel flows using silicone oil, which has a low surface tension and clean interface to bubbles, as a test fluid to evaluate the wall shear stress modification for different regimes of bubble migration status. The channel Reynolds numbers of the flow ranged from 1000 to 5000, covering laminar, transition and turbulent flow regimes. The bubble deformation and swarms were classified as packing, film, foam, dispersed, and stretched states based on visualization of bubbles as a bulk void fraction changed. In the dispersed and film states, the wall shear stress reduced by 9% from that in the single-phase condition; by contrast, the wall shear stress increased in the stretched, packing, and foam states. We carried out statistical analysis of the time-series of the wall shear stress in the transition and turbulent-flow regimes. Variations of the PDF of the shear stress and the higher order moments in the statistic indicated that the injection of bubbles generated pseudo-turbulence in the transition regime and suppressed drag-inducing events in the turbulent regime. Bubble images and measurements of shear stress revealed a correlated wave with a time lag, for which we discuss associated to the bubble dynamics and effective viscosity of the bubble mixture in wall proximity.  相似文献

An important way of increasing the speed and lowering the fuel consumption of ships is by decreasing the frictional drag. One of the most promising techniques for reducing drag is the use of air bubbles. The goal of this investigation is to establish a set of optimum robust parametric levels for drag reduction by a mixture (air–water) film in turbulent channel flow. Based on the conditions laid out by the Taguchi orthogonal array method, turbulent flows, with air bubbles injected into a channel, are simulated using commercial computational fluid dynamics software. The local shear stress on the upper wall is computed to evaluate the efficiency of drag reduction. Many factors can affect drag reduction. The factors investigated in this study are the rate of air injection, bubble size, area of air injection, flow speed, and measured position of the shear stress. These factors have been investigated through the analysis of variance, which has revealed that the rate of air injection and water flow speed dominate the efficiency of drag reduction by a mixture film. According to the results, the drag can be reduced by an average of 83.4%; and when the configuration of the parametric levels is optimum the maximum drag reduction of 88.5% is achieved.  This paper has dealt with direct contact heat and mass transfer characteristics of air bubbles in a hot water layer. The experiments were carried out by bubbling air in the hot water layer under some experimental conditions of air flow rate, inlet air temperature and humidity as a dispersion fluid, and hot water temperature and hot water layer depth as a continuous fluid. Heat transfer and evaporation of water vapor from hot water to air bubbles occurred during air bubbles ascending into the hot water. Air bubble flow patterns were classified into three regions of independent air bubble flow, transition and air bubble combination growth. Non-dimensional correlation equations of direct contact heat and mass transfer between air bubbles and hot water were derived by some non- dimensional parameters for three regions of bubble flow pattern. A study has been made of the motion of long bubbles in inclined pipes containing viscous Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids. A semi-theoretical expression for the rise velocity of air bubbles in water is derived on the hypothesis that the dominant factor is the momentum exchange of the bubble underflow, i.e. the bubble nose shape. The correlation calls on empirical inputs from established literature on bubble rise speeds at high Reynolds number. The effects of increasing Newtonian viscosity are analysed with reference to the momentum exchange and it is shown how viscosity reduces the inclination dependence of the bubble Froude number. Results from an experimental survey in seven different non-Newtonian liquids in three different diameter pipes are presented. These data are correlated so as to decouple the effects of surface tension and viscosity. An empirical relation is proposed for the effective shear rate in the fluid travelling around the bubble nose. Our correlation is compared to literature data from a broad range of Reynolds numbers with excellent agreement except at shallow angles.  相似文献

The mechanism by which air bubbles are brought into a quick moving waterflow with free surface was studied. The processes taking place at the surface were visualized with a stroboscope. It shows, how the bubbles are generated by falling drops. The height of fall and the velocity with which a water drop must hit the surface in order to form an air bubble can be calculated by an energy balance. Measurements of diameter, height of fall and velocity of the drops as well as of the size of the bubbles coincide well with the obtained formulae. Results are valid for pure water and slightly dirty waste water. Such flows occur in steep smooth channels, spillways and strongly inclined partially filled conduits and pipelines.

In this work, we present a numerical study to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of slug flow and the mechanism of slug flow induced CO2 corrosion with and without dispersed small bubbles. The simulations are performed using the coupled model put forward by the authors in previous paper, which can deal with the multiphase flow with the gas–liquid interfaces of different length scales. A quasi slug flow, where two hypotheses are imposed, is built to approximate real slug flow. In the region ahead of the Taylor bubble and the liquid film region, the presence of dispersed small bubbles has less impacts on velocity field, because there are no non-regular intensive disturbance forces or centrifugal forces breaking the balance of the liquid and the dispersed small bubbles. In the liquid slug region, the strong centrifugal forces generated by the recirculation below the Taylor bubble lead to the effect of heterogeneity, which makes the profile of the radial liquid velocity component sharper with higher volume fraction of dispersed small bubbles. The volume fraction has a maximum value in the range of r/R = 0.5–0.6. Meanwhile, it is usually higher than 0.35, which means that larger dispersed bubbles can be formed by coalescences in this region. These calculated results are in good agreement with experimental results. The wall shear stress and the mass transfer coefficient with dispersed small bubbles are higher than those without dispersed small bubbles due to enhanced fluctuations. For short Taylor bubble length, the average mass transfer coefficient is increased when the gas or liquid superficial velocity is increased. However, there may be an inflection point at low mixture superficial velocities. For the slug with dispersed small bubbles, the product scales still cannot be damaged directly despite higher wall shear stress. In fact, the alternate wall shear stress and the pressure fluctuations perpendicular to the pipe wall with high frequency are the main cause for breaking the product scales.  相似文献

Turbulent Taylor vortices between two concentric cylinders have been studied at a very high radius ratio of 0.985, equivalent to that found in relatively small underwater thruster units (typically with gaps of 2 mm). In order to study the flow at this radius ratio, a 1.42-m diameter experimental apparatus (with a rotating inner cylinder and a stationary outer cylinder) was constructed possessing a gap of 10 mm. Consequently, air bubbles could be visualised translating in water. A method was developed for identifying Taylor vortex properties from filtered digital images of the air bubbles and summing intensities to produce bubble density distributions. Whereas individual instantaneous images can be misleading, averaged bubble density distributions make it possible to identify vortex separation sizes and the positions of vortex outflow boundaries.  相似文献

The air entrainment characteristics of three separate Froude number hydraulic jumps are investigated numerically using an unsteady RANS, realizable kε turbulence model, with a Volume of Fluid treatment for the free surface. Mean velocity profiles, average void fraction, and Sauter mean diameter compare favorably with experimental data reported in literature. In all simulations, time-averaged void fraction profiles show good agreement with experimental values in the turbulent shear layer and an accurate representation of interfacial aeration at the free surface. Sauter mean diameter is well represented in the shear layer, and free surface entrainment results indicate bubble size remains relatively unchanged throughout the depth of the jump. Several different grid resolutions are tested in the simulations. Significant improvements in void fraction and bubble size comparison are seen when the diameter to grid size ratio of the largest bubbles in the shear layer surpasses eight. A three-dimensional simulation is carried out for one Froude number jump, showing an improvement in the prediction of entrained air and bubble size compared with two-dimensional results at a substantial increase in computation time. An analysis of three-dimensional vorticity shows a complex interaction between spanwise and streamwise vortical structures and entrained air bubbles. The jump is similar to a turbulent mixing layer, constrained by the free surface, with vortex pairing and subsequent fluctuations in free surface elevation. Downstream fluctuations of the toe are associated with a roll up of the primary spanwise vortex, fluctuations of the free surface, and counter-rotating streamwise vortex pairs. The action of these flow structures is likely responsible for the improvement in three-dimensional results.  相似文献

We present the first experimental results on the magnetorheology of suspensions of non-Brownian magnetic ellipsoidal particles. These particles are made of spherical iron particles linked by polymers and are called polymerized chains. Steady shear, oscillatory shear, and oscillatory squeeze rheological tests have been performed. The rheological properties of the suspension of polymerized chains have been compared with those of the suspension of spherical iron particles. In shear flow, both suspensions develop nearly the same yield stress, while in squeeze flow, the yield stress is several times higher for the suspension of polymerized chains. We show that the squeezing force of a suspension of spherical particles is an increasing function of the magnetic field intensity at low magnetic fields but decreases dramatically at higher fields. Surprisingly, this phenomenon, attributed to cavitation or air entrainment, does not occur in the suspension of polymerized chains.  相似文献

The effect of orifice shape on the mechanism of bubble formation in gas–liquid two-phase flow is investigated experimentally with three different orifice geometries regarding a circle, a square, and a triangle with same cross-sectional areas. The liquid and gas phases are purified water at 20 °C and air at room temperature, respectively. Gas is injected at the rate of 50–1200 mlph into a stagnant pool of liquid in distances of 5, 10, and 15 cm below the liquid surface. The position, velocity, and acceleration of bubbles are measured at bubbles’ centers of mass (CM) and the effects of these parameters on the bubble volume are investigated. Moreover, the forces acting on a bubble are balanced and the effects of geometry and gas flow rate on each force are presented. In addition, the changes of the acting forces versus time are plotted and discussed for a specific condition. Results show the bubbles formed with the square and circular orifice cross-sectional areas have the most and least volumes at detachment, respectively.  相似文献

Electroviscous stresses arise as hydrodynamic flows disturb the ionic (Debye) clouds that screen charged surfaces in electrolyte solutions. The contribution thereof to the effective bulk viscosity (also known as the second or volume viscosity) of two-phase suspensions is quantified here. Specifically, the bulk viscosity of two model suspensions is calculated: (1) a dilute dispersion of rigid charged spherical particles immersed in a compressible electrolyte that undergoes uniform dilatation and (2) a dilute suspension of charged gas bubbles expanding uniformly in an incompressible electrolyte. In both cases, it is assumed that the fluid flow only slightly drives the Debye cloud out of equilibrium, which formally requires that the ratio of the ion diffusion to flow time scales—a Péclet number—is small. For a suspension of rigid particles, the electroviscous contribution to the effective bulk viscosity is proportional to the particle volume fraction and decreases monotonically as the ratio of the particle radius to the Debye length increases. Similar behavior is well known for the electroviscous contribution to the effective shear viscosity of a dilute hard-sphere suspension; a quantitative comparison between the bulk and shear viscosities is made. In contrast, the electroviscous contribution to the bulk viscosity of a dilute suspension of bubbles is independent of the bubble volume fraction and attains a finite value in the limit of vanishing Debye length.  相似文献

An experimental study of the impact of glycerol/water drops onto a dry glass surface at Reynolds and Weber numbers around the splashing/deposition threshold is presented. Some new observed phenomena that may shed further light on the mechanisms underlying air bubble entrainment and splashing for high-viscosity liquids are presented and discussed. The experiments were recorded with a high-speed camera using two complementary lighting setups that enhance the visualization of different features of the air entrainment phenomena: backlighting with a light diffuser and oblique lighting without diffuser. Besides the ring of micro-bubbles surrounding the central entrapped bubble and the cloud of bubbles entrained as a result of the interaction between a levitated thin film and the solid surface, which have been studied by other authors in previous works, a second ring of micro-bubbles that delimits the outer cloud of bubbles has been detected in our investigation. Attention is mainly focused on analyzing the dependency of the behavior of the two rings of micro-bubbles on the drop impact velocity, the ranges of the relevant dimensionless numbers in which the rings are formed and the existence, in certain impact conditions, of an abrupt increase in the size of the second ring, which substantially modifies the impact outcome.  相似文献
