Over the last decade several international programmes have been developed around different standard fluids, one of which is the so-called S1 fluid. This is a solution of polyisobutylene in a mixed solvent and the aim of the programme has been to study the rheology of polymer solutions from the dilute solution to the melt. The focus of this paper will be on the flow visualisation of contraction flows of S1 through orifice dies and on the estimation of some of its extensional properties. The contraction ratios range from 24.4:1 and 124.3:1. The measured entry pressure drops will be correlated with contraction ratio and apparent wall shear rate. Experimental evidence will show that, when regarded as a function of wall shear rate, the entry pressure drops are independent of the contraction ratios. The flow fields for different contraction ratios, at any constant apparent wall shear rate, however, differ substantially. The evolution of the flow fields is monitored and it is shown that an initial increase in vortex size is followed by a slower decrease, this happening at a constant Weissenberg number. At the same Weissenberg number, small scale instabilities start occurring near the office. As the shear rate is increased further, these instabilities grow in size until, eventually, the flow structure is destroyed. An extensional viscosity is evaluated using a modified form of the Binding analysis for contraction flows and we show that the results are not only in qualitative agreement with those from other groups, but also that the analysis is able to predict exactly the onset of the aforementioned flow instabilities. Conclusion The period-doubling route to chaos for a swirling vortex flow in an open cylindrical container, at an aspect ratio of 2, driven by a rotating bottom disk was recognized by using laser-Doppler velocimetry. The onset of periodic motion for the flow was found when Re was in the range between 1850 and 1900. The flow was subharmonically bifurcated into a double-period motion when Re was about 2150. When the Reynolds number was in the range from 2300 to 2400, the flow bifurcated again through the period-doubling mode. When the Reynolds number was further increased, the flow eventually showed chaotic motion. The existence of a free surface promotes the onset of periodicity, and the difference of the critical Reynolds number with and without a free surface was estimated to be about 600.This work was supported by the National Science Council of the Republic of China under grant No. NSC-82-0410-E-002-191  相似文献

This work deals with the development of a numerical method for simulating viscoelastic axisymmetric free surface flow of an Oldroyd B fluid. A novel formulation is developed for the computation of the non-Newtonian extra-stress components on rigid boundaries and on the symmetry axis. The full free surface stress conditions are employed. The resulting governing equations are solved by finite differences on a Marker-and-cell (MAC) type grid. Validation is provided by simulating a pipe flow problem. The classical die-swell problem is solved and swelling ratios are provided. The height of the splash caused by a falling liquid drop for various Reynolds and Weissenberg numbers is then studied, and the height of the splash is shown to diminish with increasing viscoelasticity.  相似文献

We report an adaptive viscoelastic stress splitting (AVSS) scheme, which was found to be extremely robust in the numerical simulation of viscoelastic flow involving steep stress boundary layers. The scheme is different from the elastic viscous split stress (EVSS) in that the local Newtonian component is allowed to depend adaptively on the magnitude of the local elastic stress. Two decoupled versions of the scheme were implemented for the Upper Convected Maxwell (UCM) model: the streamline integration (AVSS/SI), and the streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin (AVSS/SUPG) methods of integrating the stress. The implementations were benchmarked against the known analytic Poiseuille solution, and no upper limiting Weissenberg number was found (the computation was stopped at Weissenberg number of O(104)). The flow past a sphere in a tube was solved next, giving convergent results up to a Weissenberg number of 3.2 with the AVSS/SI and 1.55 with the AVSS/SUPG (both were decoupled schemes; without the adaptive scheme, the limiting Weissenberg number for the decoupled streamline integration method was about 0.3). These results show that the decoupled AVSS is more stable than the corresponding EVSS, and the SI is more robust than SUPG in solving the constitutive equation of hyperbolic type. In addition, we found a very long stress wake behind the sphere, and a weak vortex in the rear stagnation region at a Weissenberg number above Wi of about 1.6, which does not seem to increase in size or strength with increasing Wi.  相似文献

The behaviour of the wake Strouhal number for flow past a cylinder close to a free surface at both low and moderate Froude numbers is investigated numerically. For the low Froude number case (i.e., gravity-dominated), the results obtained are similar to those for flow past a cylinder close to an adjacent no-slip boundary. As the distance between the wall and the cylinder is reduced, the Strouhal number, as measured from the time varying lift, increases to a maximum at a gap ratio of 0.70. Further gap reduction leads to a rapid decrease in the Strouhal number, with shedding finally ceasing altogether at gap ratios below 0.16. The agreement between the results for a free surface and a no-slip boundary suggests that the mechanism behind the suppression of vortex shedding is common. For flow at a fixed gap ratio and a moderate Froude number, two distinctly different wake states are observed with the flow passing over the cylinder tending to switch from a state of attachment to the free surface, to one of separation from it, and then back again in a pseudo-periodic fashion. Even though there is a significant difference in Reynolds number, the predicted numerical two-dimensional behaviour is found to compare favourably with the experimental observations at higher Reynolds number.  相似文献

The wake of a surface-mounted finite-height circular cylinder and the associated vortex patterns are strongly dependent on the cylinder aspect ratio and the thickness of the boundary layer on the ground plane relative to the dimensions of the cylinder. Above a critical aspect ratio, the mean wake is characterized by streamwise tip vortex structures and Kármán vortex shedding from the sides of the cylinder. Below a critical aspect ratio, a unique mean wake structure is observed. Recent experimental studies in the literature that used phase-averaged techniques, as well as recent numerical simulations, have led to an improved physical understanding of the near-wake vortex flow patterns. However, the flow above the free end of the finite circular cylinder, and its relationship to the near wake, has not been systematically studied. The effects of aspect ratio and boundary layer thickness on the free-end flow field are also not completely understood, nor has the influence of Reynolds number on the free-end flow field been fully explored. Common features associated with the free end include separation from the leading edge, a mean recirculation zone containing a prominent cross-stream arch (or mushroom) vortex, and reattachment onto the free-surface. Other flow features that remain to be clarified include a separation bubble near the leading edge, one or two cross-stream vortices within this separation bubble, the origins of the streamwise tip or trailing vortices, and various critical points in the near-surface flow topology. This paper reviews the current understanding of the flow above the free end of a surface-mounted finite-height circular cylinder, with a focus on models of the flow field, surface oil flow visualization studies, pressure and heat flux distributions on the free-end surface, measurements of the local velocity field, and numerical simulations, found in the literature.  相似文献

Recent two-dimensional numerical simulations and experiments have shown that, when a drop undergoes shear in a viscoelastic matrix liquid, the deformation can undergo an overshoot. I implement a volume-of-fluid algorithm with a paraboloid reconstruction of the interface for the calculation of the surface tension force for three-dimensional direct numerical simulations for a Newtonian drop in an Oldroyd-B liquid near criticalities. Weissenberg numbers up to 1 at viscosity ratio 1 and retardation parameter 0.5 are examined. Critical capillary numbers rise with the Weissenberg number. Just below criticality, drop deformation begins to undergo an overshoot when the Weissenberg number is sufficiently high. The overshoot becomes more pronounced, and at higher matrix Weissenberg numbers, such as 0.8, drop deformation undergoes novel oscillations before settling to a stationary shape. Breakup simulations are also described.  相似文献

A jet in crossflow with an inflow ratio of 3, based on the maximum velocity of the parabolic jet profile, is studied numerically. The jet is modeled as an inhomogeneous boundary condition at the crossflow wall. We find two fundamental frequencies, pertaining to self-sustained oscillations in the flow, using full nonlinear direct numerical simulation (DNS) as well as a modal decomposition into global linear eigenmodes and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) modes; a high frequency which is characteristic for the shear-layer vortices and the upright vortices in the jet wake, and a low frequency which is dominant in the region downstream of the jet orifice. Both frequencies can be related to a region of reversed flow downstream of the jet orifice. This region is observed to oscillate predominantly in the wall-normal direction with the high frequency, and in the spanwise direction with the low frequency. Moreover, the steady-state solution of the governing Navier?CStokes equations clearly shows the horseshoe vortices and the corresponding wall vortices further downstream, and the emergence of a distinct counter-rotating vortex pair high in the free stream. It is thus found that neither the inclusion of the jet pipe nor unsteadiness is necessary to generate the characteristic counter-rotating vortex pair.  相似文献

A Reynolds stress model for the numerical simulation of uniform 3D turbulent open‐channel flows is described. The finite volume method is used for the numerical solution of the flow equations and transport equations of the Reynolds stress components. The overall solution strategy is the SIMPLER algorithm, and the power‐law scheme is used to discretize the convection and diffusion terms in the governing equations. The developed model is applied to a flow at a Reynolds number of 77000 in a rectangular channel with a width to depth ratio of 2. The simulated mean flow and turbulence structures are compared with measured and computed data from the literature. The computed flow vectors in the plane normal to the streamwise direction show a small vortex, called inner secondary currents, located at the juncture of the sidewall and the free surface as well as the free surface and bottom vortices. This small vortex causes a significant increase in the wall shear stress in the vicinity of the free surface. A budget analysis of the streamwise vorticity is carried out. It is found that both production terms by anisotropy of Reynolds normal stress and by Reynolds shear stress contribute to the generation of secondary currents. Flow through a circular orifice in a deformable diaphragm mounted in a pipe was studied experimentally as a simple yet suitable case for validating numerical fluid/structure interaction (FSI) codes including structures with significant deformation and strain. The flow was characterized using pressure taps, particle image velocimetry (PIV), and hot-film anemometry while deformation of the compliant diaphragm was determined directly from PIV images. The diaphragm material properties were measured independently by a uniaxial tensile testing machine. The diaphragm material modulus, orifice diameter, and pipe Reynolds number were varied over ranges appropriate for simulations of flows through heart valves. Pipe Reynolds numbers ranged from 600 (laminar upstream condition) to 8800 (turbulent upstream condition). The pressure drop across the diaphragm resulted in a concave deformation for all cases studied. For the range of Reynolds number tested, the Euler number decreased with increasing Reynolds number as a result of orifice expansion. The flow immediately downstream of compliant diaphragms was jet-like with strong inward radial velocity components and vena contracta. Laminar low Reynolds number flow (Re=600) through both rigid and compliant diaphragms yielded early and regular roll up of coherent vortex rings at a fixed frequency in contrast to turbulent higher Reynolds number flow (Re=3900), which yielded a broad range of vortex passage frequencies. Expansion of the compliant orifice for Re=3900 resulted in an initially broader slower jet with delayed shear layer development compared with the equivalent rigid case.  相似文献
