A laminar wall jet undergoing transition is investigated using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The plane wall jet is issued from a rectangular channel, with the jet-exit velocity profile being parabolic. The Reynolds number, based on the exit mean velocity and the channel width, is 1450. To aid the understanding of the global flow features, laser-sheet/smoke flow visualizations are performed along streamwise, spanwise, and cross-stream directions. Surface pressure measurements are made to correlate the instantaneous vorticity distribution with the surface pressure fluctuations. The instantaneous velocity and vorticity field measurements provide the basis for understanding the formation of the inner-region vortex and the subsequent interactions between the outer-region (free-shear-layer region) and inner-region (boundary-layer region) vortical structures. Results show that under the influence of the free-shear-layer vortex, the local boundary layer becomes detached from the surface and inviscidly unstable, and a vortex is formed in the inner region. Once this vortex has formed, the free-shear-layer vortex and the inner-region vortex form a vortex couple and convect downstream. The mutual interactions between these inner- and outer-region vortical structures dominate the transition process. Farther downstream, the emergence of the three-dimensional structure in the free shear layer initiates complete breakdown of the flow. Received: 8 November 1995/Accepted: 6 November 1996  相似文献

Experimental data for a two-dimensional (2-D) turbulent boundary layer (TBL) flow and a three-dimensional (3-D) pressure-driven TBL flow outside of a wing/body junction were obtained for an approach Reynolds number based on momentum thickness of Re θ =23,200. The wing shape had a 3:2 elliptical nose, NACA 0020 profiled tail, and was mounted on a flat wall. Some Reynolds number effects are examined using fine spatial resolution (Δy +=1.8) three-velocity-component laser-Doppler velocimeter measurements of mean velocities and Reynolds stresses at nine stations for Re θ =23,200 and previously reported data for a much thinner boundary layer at Re θ =5,940 for the same wing shape. In the 3-D boundary layers, while the stress profiles vary considerably along the flow due to deceleration, acceleration, and skewing, profiles of the parameter correlate well and over available Reynolds numbers. The measured static pressure variations on the flat wall are similar for the two Reynolds numbers, so the vorticity flux and the measured mean velocities scaled on wall variables agree closely near the wall. The stresses vary similarly for both cases, but with higher values in the outer region of the higher Re θ case. The outer layer turbulence in the thicker high Reynolds number case behaves similarly to a rapid distortion of the flow, since stream-wise vortical effects from the wall have not diffused completely through the boundary layer at all measurement stations. The results of an experimental investigation of boundary layer stability in a gradient flow with a high degree of free-stream turbulence are presented. The question of the possible artificial generation, the further development and the effect on laminar-turbulent transition of instability waves (Tollmien-Schlichting waves) in the boundary layer on a wing profile is considered for a level of free-stream turbulence =1.75% of the free-stream velocity; the sensitivity of the flow to the disturbances and their control by means of boundary layer suction are investigated.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 2, pp. 52–58, March–April, 1990.  相似文献

The turbulent flow structure and vortex dynamics of a jet-in-a-crossflow (JICF) problem, which is related to gas turbine blade film cooling, is investigated using the particle-image velocimetry (PIV) technique. A cooling jet emanating from a pipe interacts with a turbulent flat plate boundary layer at a Reynolds number Re = 400,000. The streamwise inclination of the coolant jet is 30° and two velocity ratios (VR = 0.28, VR = 0.48) and two mass flux ratios (MR = 0.28, MR = 0.48) are considered. Jets of air and CO2 are injected separately into a boundary layer to examine the effects of the density ratio between coolant and mainstream on the mixing behavior and consequently, the cooling efficiency. The results show a higher mass flux ratio to enlarge the size of the recirculation region leading to a more pronounced entrainment of hot outer fluid into the wake of the jet. Furthermore, the lateral spreading of the coolant is strongly increased at a higher density ratio. The results of the experimental measurements are used to validate numerical findings. This comparison shows an excellent agreement for mean velocity and higher moment velocity distributions.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulation (DNS) of heat transfer in a channel flow obstructed by rectangular prisms has been performed for Reτ = 80–20, where Reτ is based on the friction velocity, the channel half width and the kinematic viscosity. The molecular Prandtl number is set to be 0.71. The flow remains unsteady down to Reτ = 40 owing to the disturbance induced by the prism. For Reτ = 30 and 20, the flow results in a steady laminar flow. In the vicinity of the prism, the three-dimensional complex vortices are generated and heat transfer is enhanced. The Reynolds number effect on the time-averaged vortex structure and the local Nusselt number are investigated. The mechanism of the heat transfer enhancement is discussed. In addition, the mean flow parameters such as the friction factor and the Nusselt number are examined in comparison with existing DNS and experimental data.  相似文献

An actuator, which produces several different flow fields that may be used for active flow control, is characterized in still air using flow visualization and velocity measurements. The primary actuator-induced flow fields are: free jets, wall jets, and vortex flows. The non-dimensional parameters governing these actuator-induced flows are developed. For the vortex-flow regime, the operational range of the actuator increases as it’s size decreases without a significant decrease in either the actuator induced velocity or vortex core size. The velocity scaling is developed for the vortex flow and suggests that the optimum actuator efficiency occurs at a Stokes number of approximately 7.9 for the range of parameters surveyed. In a turbulent, zero pressure gradient boundary layer, measurements made just downstream of the actuator (when operated in the vortex mode) indicate a vortical disturbance is generated in the boundary layer.

The vortical structures in the rear separation and wake region produced by a micro-ramp that immersed in a supersonic turbulent boundary layer are investigated. The small scale separation close to the trailing edge was revealed and this confirms the previous experimental observation. Between the reverse region and surrounding fast moving flow, a three-dimensional shear layer was formed, and vortices are generated. By using vortex line method, the spiral points were illustrated as the cross-sections of the Ω-shaped vortices that follow the shape of the separation. The vortical structure was analogous to that in the wake region, where similar Ω-shaped vortex which follows the deficit region caused by the micro-ramp can be observed. Finally, the revealed flow topology was conceived new and beneficial to the studying of wall bounded turbulence which involves similar vortical structures but in a smaller scale, compared with the vortical pattern in the current micro-ramp wake.  相似文献

The boundary layer on a plate with an inclined blunt leading edge is investigated for a free-stream flow with a small span-periodic velocity inhomogeneity. This flow simulates the penetration of the outer turbulence into the swept wing boundary layer. It is shown that the boundary layer perturbations generated by the inhomogeneity generally have a streamwise velocity component significantly greater than the initial inhomogeneity amplitude. The dependence of the perturbations on the distance from the leading edge and the spanwise inhomogeneity period is found. It is shown that the swept wing boundary layer is less sensitive to the perturbation type in question than the straight wing boundary layer.  相似文献

A numerical study of a square jet in a cross flow is carried out at a Reynolds number of 100. The flow field and heat transfer characteristic downstream of the jet have been explored by solving three-dimensional unsteady Navier–Stokes equations and energy equation using higher order spatial and temporal discretization. The projection of vortical structure on a plane is seen to give the component of vortex normal to the plane. Four combinations of velocity profile namely (1) uniform crossflow and uniform jet, (2) laminar boundary layer crossflow and uniform jet, (3) uniform crossflow and parabolic jet profile, and (4) laminar boundary layer crossflow and parabolic jet are compared at same phase to see their effect on the flow field and heat transfer characteristic. All the four cases are seen to exhibit unsteadiness but the jet with parabolic profile is seen to show stronger unsteadiness. The instantaneous vortical structures of all the cases at the same phase show that the structures are more complex for the jet with parabolic velocity profile. The temperature field is seen to be correlated with the vortical structures. Comparison of the time averaged flow field reveals that the jet penetration is the highest for the jet having parabolic profile and boundary layer crossflow. The adiabatic effectiveness is observed to be more for the jet with uniform velocity profile and uniform crossflow and was least for the jet with parabolic velocity profile and boundary layer crossflow.  相似文献

A laminar separation bubble occurs on the suction side of the SD7003 airfoil at an angle of attack α =  4–8° and a low Reynolds number less than 100,000, which brings about a significant adverse aerodynamic effect. The spatial and temporal structure of the laminar separation bubble was studied using the scanning PIV method at α =  4° and Re = 60,000 and 20,000. Of particular interest are the dynamic vortex behavior in transition process and the subsequent vortex evolution in the turbulent boundary layer. The flow was continuously sampled in a stack of parallel illuminated planes from two orthogonal views with a frequency of hundreds Hz, and PIV cross-correlation was performed to obtain the 2D velocity field in each plane. Results of both the single-sliced and the volumetric presentations of the laminar separation bubble reveal vortex shedding in transition near the reattachment region at Re = 60,000. In a relatively long distance vortices characterized by paired wall-normal vorticity packets retain their identities in the reattached turbulent boundary layer, though vortices interact through tearing, stretching and tilting. Compared with the restricted LSB at Re = 60,000, the flow at Re = 20,000 presents an earlier separation and a significantly increased reversed flow region followed by “huge” vortical structures.  相似文献

Large-eddy simulations (LES) are used to investigate the modifications of wake dynamics and turbulence characteristics behind a circular cylinder placed near a wall for varying gap-to-diameter (G/D) ratios (where G signifies the gap between the wall and the cylinder, and D the cylinder diameter). The three-dimensional (3-D), time-dependent, incompressible Navier–Stokes equations with a dynamic subgrid-scale model are solved using a symmetry-preserving finite-difference scheme of second-order spatial and temporal accuracy. The immersed boundary (IB) method is employed to impose the no-slip boundary condition on the cylinder surface. Flow visualizations along with turbulence statistics are presented to gain insight into the flow structures that are due to interaction between the shear layers and the approaching boundary layer. Apart from the vortex shedding mechanism, the paper illustrates the physics involving the shear layer transition, stretching, breakdown and turbulence generation, either qualitatively or quantitatively, in the presence of a wall for a Reynolds number of Re=1440 (based on D and the inlet free-stream velocity U).  相似文献

Experimental methods, particularly visualization methods, permit a sufficiently detailed representation of the flow around bodies of complex shape, whose analysis meets with a considerable number of difficulties. The flow around a delta wing in the 1–90-m/sec free-stream velocity range is studied in this paper by using three-dimensional visual methods. Since stream separation and vortex-system formation play the main role in the flow formation over a wing surface, the main purpose of the experiment was to trace the physical process of dynamic development of the flow resulting in separation and vortex formation.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 2, pp. 190–194, March–April, 1976.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulation of turbulent incompressible plane-channel flow between a smooth wall and one covered with regular three-dimensional roughness elements is performed. While the impact of roughness on the mean-velocity profile of turbulent wall layers is well understood, at least qualitatively, the manner in which other features are affected, especially in the outer layer, has been more controversial. We compare results from the smooth- and rough-wall sides of the channel for three different roughness heights of h += 5.4, 10.8, and 21.6 for Re τ of 400, to isolate the effects of the roughness on turbulent statistics and the instantaneous turbulence structure at large and small scales. We focus on the interaction between the near-wall and outer-layer regions, in particular the extent to which the near-wall behavior influences the flow further away from the surface. Roughness tends to increase the intensity of the velocity and vorticity fluctuations in the inner layer. In the outer layer, although the roughness alters the velocity fluctuations, the vorticity fluctuations are relatively unaffected. The higher-order moments and the energy budgets demonstrate significant differences between the smooth-wall and rough-wall sides in the processes associated with the wall-normal fluxes of the Reynolds shear stresses and turbulence kinetic energy. The length scales and flow dynamics in the roughness sublayer, the spatially inhomogeneous layer within which the flow is directly influenced by the individual roughness elements, are also examined. Alternative mechanisms involved in producing and maintaining near-wall turbulence in rough-wall boundary layers are also considered. We find that the strength of the inner/outer-layer interactions are greatly affected by the size of the roughness elements.  相似文献

Effects of embedded longitudinal vortices on heat transfer in film-cooled turbulent boundary layers at different blowing ratios are discussed. These results were obtained in boundary layers at free-stream velocities of 10 and 15 m/s. Film coolant was injected from a single row of holes at blowing ratios of 0.47–1.26. A single longitudinal vortex was induced upstream of the film-cooling holes using a half-delta wing attached to the wind tunnel floor. Heat transfer measurements were made downstream of injection using a constant heat flux surface with 126 thermocouples for surface temperature measurements. For all blowing ratios examined, the embedded vortices cause significant alterations to wall heat transfer and to film cooling distributions. Measurrments of mean temperatures and mean velocities in spanwise planes show that high wall heat transfer regions are associated with regions of high near-wall longitudinal velocity where very little film coolant is present. In addition to high heat transfer regions associated with the vortex downwash, there are also secondary heat transfer peaks. These secondary peaks develop due to shear layer mixing and interaction between the vortex and cooling jets and become higher in magnitude and more persistent with downstream distance as the blowing ratio increases from 0.47 to 1.26.  相似文献

Large-eddy simulations of the flow field around twin three-dimensional impinging jets were carried out to simulate the near-ground hover configuration of a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft. Both the impinging jet and the upwash caused by the collision of the wall jets are modeled in this study. The evolution of the vortical structures in the impinging jet flow field, due to the introduction of axisymmetric and azimuthal perturbations at the jet exit, has been investigated. The vortical structures formed in the jet shear layer due to azimuthal forcing, show significant three-dimensional vortex stretching effects when compared to the structures formed during axisymmetric forcing. Breakdown of the large-scale structures into smaller vortices also occurs much earlier during azimuthal forcing. When compared to the upwash formed during axisymmetric forcing, the azimuthally perturbed jet forms an upwash that is less coherent and results in a weaker upload or lift-off force on the aircraft undersurface. Comparison with available experimental data indicates good agreement for the centerline velocity decay, the wall pressure variation and the phase speed of the vortical structures.  相似文献

The three-dimensional velocity fluctuation effects on heat transfer enhancement were experimentally investigated using a wind tunnel system and cylinders placed upstream of the test section in the wind tunnel. The cylinders with different diameters were used as turbulators to generate vortical flow motions with three-dimensional velocity fluctuations. A heated plate, part of the tunnel wall, was placed far downstream of the cylinders such that it was subjected mainly to flows with velocity fluctuations but with negligible steady vortical motions. These studies included three-component velocity measurements to characterize the near-wall and cross-section velocity fields and to obtain the turbulent kinetic energy. The temperatures were measured by thermocouples on the heated plate to obtain the convection heat transfer coefficients and the Nusselt numbers. Results indicate that the heat transfer was enhanced by the velocity fluctuations, which is attributed to the modification of boundary layer velocity profiles without the modification of boundary layer thickness. The resulting normalized Nusselt number was approximately a parabolic function of a dimensionless parameter, the product of Reynolds number and normalized turbulent kinetic energy.  相似文献

A single trailing vortex developed behind a micro-wing immersed in a free stream was used to study the vortex receptivity of a swept-wing boundary layer. As a result of the interaction, longitudinal-velocity disturbances develop in the boundary layer. On the swept wing, disturbance transformation occurs near the leading edge and is accompanied by the formation of a wave packet consisting of waves typical of cross-flow instability. Disturbances with other characteristics are also detected. These disturbances may be attributable to distributed boundary-layer receptivity to the free-stream vortex disturbance considered.  相似文献

This paper presents a computational fluid–structure interaction analysis for a flexible plate in a free-stream to investigate the effects of flexibility and angle of attack on force generation. A Lattice Boltzmann Method with an immersed boundary technique using a direct forcing scheme model of the fluid is coupled to a finite element model with rectangular bending elements. We investigated the effects of various angles of attack of a flexible plate fixed at one of the end edges in a free-stream at a Reynolds number of 5000, which represents the wing flapping condition of insects and small birds in nature. The lift of the flexible plate is maintained at the large angle of attack, whereas the rigid plate shows the largest lift at angles of attack around 30–40° and then drastic reductions in the lift at the large angle of attack. If we consider the efficiency as the lift divided by the drag, the flexible plate shows better efficiency at angles of attack greater than 30° compared to the rigid plate. The better performance of the flexible plate at large angles of attack comes from the deformation of the plate, which produces an interaction between the trailing edge vortex and the short edge vortex. The horseshoe-shaped vortex produced by a large vortex interaction at the trailing edge side has an important role in increasing the lift, and the small projection area due to the deformation reduces the drag. Furthermore, we investigate the role of flexibility on the lift and the drag force of the rectangular plate in a free-stream as the Reynolds number increases. Whenever a large vortex interaction at the trailing edge side is shown, the efficiency of the rectangular plate is improved. Especially, the flexible plate shows better efficiency as the Reynolds number increases regardless of the angle of attack.  相似文献
