The steady mixed convection flow and heat transfer from an exponentially stretching vertical surface in a quiescent Maxwell fluid in the presence of magnetic field, viscous dissipation and Joule heating have been studied. The stretching velocity, surface temperature and magnetic field are assumed to have specific exponential function forms for the existence of the local similarity solution. The coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations governing the local similarity flow and heat transfer have been solved numerically by Chebyshev finite difference method. The influence of the buoyancy parameter, viscous dissipation, relaxation parameter of Maxwell fluid, magnetic field and Prandtl number on the flow and heat transfer has been considered in detail. The Nusselt number increases significantly with the Prandtl number, but the skin friction coefficient decreases. The Nusselt number slightly decreases with increasing viscous dissipation parameter, but the skin friction coefficient slightly increases. Maxwell fluid reduces both skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number, whereas buoyancy force enhances them.  相似文献

The steady nonlinear hydromagnetic flow of an incompressible, viscous and electrically conducting fluid with heat transfer over a surface of variable temperature stretching with a power-law velocity in the presence of variable transverse magnetic field is analysed. Utilizing similarity transformation, governing nonlinear partial differential equations are transformed to nonlinear ordinary differential equations and they are numerically solved using fourth-order Runge–Kutta shooting method. Numerical solutions are illustrated graphically by means of graphs. The effects of magnetic field, stretching parameter and Prandtl number on velocity, skin friction, temperature distribution and rate of heat transfer are discussed.  相似文献

The steady mixed convection flow over a vertical wedge with a magnetic field embedded in a porous medium has been investigated. The effects of the permeability of the medium, surface mass transfer and viscous dissipation on the flow and temperature fields have been included in the analysis. The coupled nonlinear partial differential equations governing the flow field have been solved numerically using the Keller box method. The skin friction and heat transfer are found to increase with the parameters characterizing the permeability of the medium, buoyancy force, magnetic field and pressure gradient. However the effect of the permeability and magnetic field on the heat transfer is very small. The heat transfer increases with the Prandtl number, but the skin friction decreases. The buoyancy force which assists the forced convection flow causes an overshoot in the velocity profiles. Both the skin friction and heat transfer increase with suction and the effect of injection is just the reverse. Received on 21 May 1999  相似文献

Summary  The nonsimilar boundary-layer flow and heat transfer over a stationary permeable surface in a rotating fluid in the presence of magnetic field, mass transfer and free stream velocity are studied. The parabolic partial differential equations governing the flow have been solved numerically by using a difference–differential method. For small streamwise distance, these partial differential equations are also solved by a perturbation technique with Shanks transformation. For uniform mass transfer, analytical solutions are obtained. The surface skin friction coefficients and the Nusselt number increase with the magnetic field, suction and streamwise distance from the leading edge of the plate except the skin friction coefficient in the y-direction which decreases with the increasing magnetic field. An analysis has been carried out to study the effect of magnetic field on an electrically conducting fluid of second grade in a parallel channel. The coolant fluid is injected into the porous channel through one side of the channel wall into the other heated impermeable wall. The combined effect of inertia, viscous, viscoelastic and magnetic forces are studied. The basic equations governing the flow and heat transfer are reduced to a set of ordinary differential equations by using appropriate transformations for velocity and temperature. Numerical solutions of these equations are obtained with the help of Runge-Kutta fourth order method in association with quasi-linear shooting technique. Numerical results for velocity field, temperature field, skin friction and Nusselt number are presented in terms of elastic parameter, Hartmann number, Prandtl number and Reynolds number. Special case of our results is in good agreement with earlier published work.  相似文献

An exact and a numerical solutions to the problem of a steady mixed convective MHD flow of an incompressible viscous electrically conducting fluid past an infinite vertical porous plate with combined heat and mass transfer are presented.A uniform magnetic field is assumed to be applied transversely to the direction of the flow with the consideration of the induced magnetic field with viscous and magnetic dissipations of energy. The porous plate is subjected to a constant suction velocity as well as a uniform mixed stream velocity. The governing equations are solved by the perturbation technique and a numerical method. The analytical expressions for the velocity field, the temperature field, the induced magnetic field, the skin-friction,and the rate of heat transfer at the plate are obtained. The numerical results are demonstrated graphically for various values of the parameters involved in the problem. The effects of the Hartmann number, the chemical reaction parameter, the magnetic Prandtl number, and the other parameters involved in the velocity field, the temperature field, the concentration field, and the induced magnetic field from the plate to the fluid are discussed. An increase in the heat source/sink or the Eckert number is found to strongly enhance the fluid velocity values. The induced magnetic field along the x-direction increases with the increase in the Hartmann number, the magnetic Prandtl number, the heat source/sink,and the viscous dissipation. It is found that the flow velocity, the fluid temperature, and the induced magnetic field decrease with the increase in the destructive chemical reaction.Applications of the study arise in the thermal plasma reactor modelling, the electromagnetic induction, the magnetohydrodynamic transport phenomena in chromatographic systems, and the magnetic field control of materials processing.  相似文献

An analysis of free convection heat transfer in electrically conducting power law non-Newtonian fluid over a thin axisymmetric body of constant temperature is carried out. The uniform external magnetic field acts normally to the surface through the induced boundary layer. In view of the fact that most of the non-Newtonian fluids have large Prandtl number, the momentum equation is simplified. The equations of conservation of mass, momentum and energy which govern and describe the flow and heat transfer are solved numerically. The effect of the magnetic field on the velocity, temperature, the coefficient of friction and the Nusselt number are investigated. Numerical results are tabulated, presented graphically and discussed.  相似文献

The flow and heat transfer for an electrically conducting fluid with a porous substrate and a flat plate under the influence of magnetic field is considered. The magnetic field is assumed to be uniform and also along normal to the surface. The momentum and energy equations are transformed to ordinary differential equations by using suitable similarity transformation and are solved by standard techniques. But the energy equation is solved by considering two boundary layers, one in the porous substrate and the other above the porous substrate. Numerical results are presented through graphs with various values of magnetic parameter for both velocity and thermal boundary layers along with Nusselt number and for various values of Prandtl number and Eckert number in thermal boundary layer.  相似文献

This paper investigates the problem of hydrodynamic boundary layer flow and heat transfer of a dusty fluid over an unsteady stretching surface. The study considers the effects of frictional heating(viscous dissipation) and internal heat generation or absorption. The basic equations governing the flow and heat transfer are reduced to a set of non-linear ordinary differential equations by applying suitable similarity transformations. The transformed equations are numerically solved by the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg-45 order method. An analysis is carried out for two different cases of heating processes, namely, variable wall temperature(VWT) and variable heat flux(VHF).The effects of various physical parameters such as the magnetic parameter, the fluid-particle interaction parameter, the unsteady parameter, the Prandtl number, the Eckert number, the number density of dust particles, and the heat source/sink parameter on velocity and temperature profiles are shown in several plots. The effects of the wall temperature gradient function and the wall temperature function are tabulated and discussed.  相似文献

The problem of magneto-hydrodynamic mixed convective flow and heat transfer of an electrically conducting, power-law fluid past a stretching surface in the presence of heat generation/absorption and thermal radiation has been analyzed. After transforming the governing equations with suitable dimensionless variables, numerical solutions are generated by an implicit finite-difference technique for the non-similar, coupled flow. The solution is found to be dependent on the governing parameters including the power-law fluid index, the magnetic field parameter, the modified Richardson number, the radiation parameter, the heat generation parameter, and the generalized Prandtl number. To reveal the tendency of the solutions, typical results for the velocity and temperature profiles, the skin-friction coefficient, and the local Nusselt number are presented for different values of these controlling parameters.  相似文献

The unsteady laminar magnetohydrodynamics(MHD) boundary layer flow and heat transfer of nanofluids over an accelerating convectively heated stretching sheet are numerically studied in the presence of a transverse magnetic field with heat source/sink. The unsteady governing equations are solved by a shooting method with the Runge-KuttaFehlberg scheme. Three different types of water based nanofluids, containing copper, aluminium oxide, and titanium dioxide, are taken into consideration. The effects of the pertinent parameters on the fluid velocity, the temperature, the entropy generation number, the Bejan number, the shear stress, and the heat transfer rate at the sheet surface are graphically and quantitatively discussed in detail. A comparison of the entropy generation due to the heat transfer and the fluid friction is made with the help of the Bejan number. It is observed that the presence of the metallic nanoparticles creates more entropy in the nanofluid flow than in the regular fluid flow.  相似文献

The unsteady flow and heat transfer of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid in the forward stagnation point region of a rotating sphere in the presence of a magnetic field are investigated in this study. The unsteadiness in the flow field is caused by the velocity at the edge of the boundary layer and the angular velocity of the rotating sphere, both varying continuously with time. The system of ordinary differential equations governing the flow is solved numerically. For some particular cases, an analytical solution is also obtained. It is found that the surface shear stresses in x- and y-directions and the surface heat transfer increase with the acceleration, the magnetic and the rotation parameters whether the magnetic field is fixed relative to the fluid or body, except that the surface shear stress in x-direction and the surface heat transfer decrease with increasing the magnetic parameter when the magnetic field is fixed relative to the body. For a certain value of the acceleration parameter, the surface shear stress in the x-direction vanishes while the surface shear stress in the y-direction and the surface heat transfer remain finite. Also, below a certain value of the acceleration parameter, reverse flow occurs in the x-component of the velocity profile. Received on 18 May 1998  相似文献

In this paper, the influence of heat transfer and induced magnetic field on peristaltic flow of a Johnson-Segalman fluid is studied. The purpose of the present investigation is to study the effects of induced magnetic field on the peristaltic flow of non-Newtonian fluid. The two-dimensional equations of a Johnson-Segalman fluid are simplified by assuming a long wavelength and a low Reynolds number. The obtained equations are solved for the stream function, magnetic force function, and axial pressure gradient by using a regular perturbation method. The expressions for the pressure rise, temperature, induced magnetic field, pressure gradient, and stream function are sketched and interpreted for various embedded parameters.  相似文献

The flow due to the pulsatile pressure gradient of dusty non-Newtonian fluid with heat transfer in a channel is considered. The system is stressed by an external magnetic field. The non-Newtonian fluid under consideration is obeying the rheological equation of state due to Ree-Eyring’s stress–strain relation. The equations of momentum and energy have been solved by using Lightill method. The velocity and temperature distributions of the two phase of the dusty fluid are obtained. The effects of various physical parameters of distributions the problem on these distributions are discussed and illustrated graphically through a set of figure.  相似文献

A numerical study is performed to examine the heat transfer characteristics of natural convection past a vertical cone under the combined effects of magnetic field and thermal radiation. The surface of the cone is subjected to a variable surface heat flux. The fluid considered is a gray,absorbing-emitting radiation but a non-scattering medium. With approximate transformations, the boundary layer equations governing the flow are reduced to non-dimensional equations valid in the free convection regime. The dimensionless governing equations are solved by an implicit finite difference method of Crank-Nicolson type which is fast convergent, accurate, and unconditionally stable.Numerical results are obtained and presented for velocity, temperature, local and average wall shear stress, and local and average Nusselt number in air and water. The present results are compared with the previous published work and are found to be in excellent agreement.  相似文献

The unsteady free convection flow over an infinite vertical porous plate, which moves with time-dependent velocity in an ambient fluid, has been studied. The effects of the magnetic field and Hall current are included in the analysis. The buoyancy forces arise due to both the thermal and mass diffusion. The partial differential equations governing the flow have been solved numerically using both the implicit finite difference scheme and the difference-differential method. For the steady case, analytical solutions have also been obtained. The effect of time variation on the skin friction, heat transfer and mass transfer is very significant. Suction increases the skin friction coefficient in the primary flow, and also the Nusselt and Sherwood numbers, but the skin friction coefficient in the secondary flow is reduced. The effect of injection is opposite to that of suction. The buoyancy force, injection and the Hall parameter induce an overshoot in the velocity profiles in the primary flow which changes the velocity gradient from a negative to a positive value, but the magnetic field and suction reduce this velocity overshoot.  相似文献

An analysis is performed to study the unsteady combined forced and free convection flow (mixed convection flow) of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid in the vicinity of an axisymmetric stagnation point adjacent to a heated vertical surface. The unsteadiness in the flow and temperature fields is due to the free stream velocity, which varies arbitrarily with time. Both constant wall temperature and constant heat flux conditions are considered in this analysis. By using suitable transformations, the Navier–Stokes and energy equations with four independent variables (x, y, z, t) are reduced to a system of partial differential equations with two independent variables (, ). These transformations also uncouple the momentum and energy equations resulting in a primary axisymmetric flow, in an energy equation dependent on the primary flow and in a buoyancy-induced secondary flow dependent on both primary flow and energy. The resulting system of partial differential equations has been solved numerically by using both implicit finite-difference scheme and differential-difference method. An interesting result is that for a decelerating free stream velocity, flow reversal occurs in the primary flow after certain instant of time and the magnetic field delays or prevents the flow reversal. The surface heat transfer and the surface shear stress in the primary flow increase with the magnetic field, but the surface shear stress in the buoyancy-induced secondary flow decreases. Further the heat transfer increases with the Prandtl number, but the surface shear stress in the secondary flow decreases.  相似文献

Nonlinear hydromagnetic flow and heat transfer over a surface stretching with a power-law velocity is analysed. A special form of the magnetic field is chosen to obtain similarity equations. Resulting equations are numerically solved using Runge–Kutta shooting method. Values of skin-friction and rate of heat transfer are obtained and the effect of magnetic field, stretching parameter and Prandtl number over these are discussed.
