This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation, into the effect of water in diesel and kerosene emulsions, on the evaporation time of a single droplet, on hot surfaces (stainless-steel and aluminum). Experiments are performed at atmospheric pressure, and initial water volume concentrations of 10, 20, 30, and 40%. The wall temperatures ranging from 100–460 °C, to cover the entire spectrum of heat transfer characteristics from evaporation to film boiling. Results show that, qualitatively, the shapes of emulsion evaporation curves are very similar to that of pure liquids. Quantitavely, there are significant differences. The total evaporation time, for the emulsion droplets is lower than that for diesel and kerosene fuels, and decreased as water initial concentration increases, up to surface temperatures less than the critical temperature. The value of the critical surface temperature (maximum heat transfer rate), decreases as initial concentration of water increases. In the film-boiling region, the evaporation time for the emulsion droplets is higher than for diesel and kerosene droplets, at identical conditions.List of Symbols hfg latent heat of vaporization, KJ/kg - m mass of the droplet, gm - Tb boiling temperature, °C - Tc critical temperature, °C - TL Leidenfrost temperature, °C - Ts initial surface temperature of the hot surface, °C  相似文献

Evaporation rates of water droplets in high-temperature gases were experimentally determined using high-speed video recording cameras and low-inertia thermocouples (for heated air flow as an example). The experiments were carried out for droplets of initial size (radius) 1–3 mm at an air temperature of 500–1000 K. Dependences of the evaporation rate of water droplets on time and gas temperature were obtained for various initial droplet sizes.  相似文献

Turbulent combustion of mono-disperse droplet-mist has been analysed based on three-dimensional Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) in canonical configuration under decaying turbulence for a range of different values of droplet equivalence ratio (?d), droplet diameter (ad) and root-mean-square value of turbulent velocity (u). The fuel is supplied in liquid phase and the evaporation of droplets gives rise to gaseous fuel for the flame propagation into the droplet-mist. It has been found that initial droplet diameter, turbulence intensity and droplet equivalence ratio can have significant influences on the volume-integrated burning rate, flame surface area and burning rate per unit area. The droplets are found to evaporate predominantly in the preheat zone, but some droplets penetrate the flame front, reaching the burned gas side where they evaporate and some of the resulting fuel vapour diffuses back towards the flame front. The combustion process in gaseous phase takes place predominantly in fuel-lean mode even for ?d > 1. The probability of finding fuel-lean mixture increases with increasing initial droplet diameter because of slower evaporation of larger droplets and this predominantly fuel-lean mode of combustion exhibits the attributes of low Damköhler number combustion and gives rise to thickening of flame with increasing droplet diameter. The chemical reaction is found to take place under both premixed and non-premixed modes of combustion and the relative contribution of non-premixed combustion to overall heat release increases with increasing droplet size. The statistical behaviours of the flame propagation and mode of combustion have been analysed in detail and detailed physical explanations have been provided for the observed behaviour.  相似文献

We present results of a numerical study of turbulent droplet-laden channel flow with phase transition. Previous studies of the same system did not take into account the presence of gravity. Here, we do so introducing a thin film of water at the bottom wall and permitting droplets to fall into and merge with it. We treat the carrier phase with the Eulerian approach. Each droplet is considered separately in the Lagrangian formulation, adopting the point–particle approximation. We maintain the film thickness constant by draining water from the bottom wall to compensate for (a) the droplets that fall onto the film and (b) evaporation/condensation. We also maintain on average the total mass of water in the channel by inserting new droplets at the top wall to compensate for the water that has been drained from the bottom wall. We analyze the behavior of the statistically averaged gas and droplet quantities focusing on the heat exchange between the two phases. We increase (a) the initial droplet diameter keeping the same initial droplet volume fraction and (b) the initial number of droplets in the channel keeping their diameter the same. In both parameter studies we find that droplets grow less than in the reference case. In case (a) this is explained by the larger velocity with which they travel to the bottom wall and in case (b) by the lower rate of condensation of vapor due to the presence of neighboring droplets.  相似文献

Measurements of droplet size in optically-thick, non-evaporating, shear-driven sprays have been made using ultra-small angle x-ray scattering (USAXS). The sprays are produced by orifice-type nozzles coupled to diesel injectors, with measurements conducted from 1 – 24 mm from the orifice, spanning from the optically-dense near-nozzle region to more dilute regions where optical diagnostics are feasible. The influence of nozzle diameter, liquid injection pressure, and ambient density were examined. The USAXS measurements reveal few if any nanoscale droplets, in conflict with a popular computational model of diesel spray breakup. The average droplet diameter rapidly decreases with downstream distance from the nozzle until a plateau value is reached, after which only small changes are seen in droplet diameter. This plateau droplet size is consistent with the droplets being small enough to be stable with respect to further breakup. Liquid injection pressure and nozzle diameter have the biggest impact on droplet size, while ambient density has a smaller effect.  相似文献

This study examines the hydrodynamics and temperature characteristics of distilled deionized water droplets impinging on smooth and nano-structured surfaces using high speed (HS) and infrared (IR) imaging at We = 23.6 and Re = 1593, both based on initial drop impingement parameters. Results for a smooth and nano-structured surface for a range of surface temperatures are compared. Droplet impact velocity, transient spreading diameter and dynamic contact angle are measured. The near surface average droplet fluid temperatures are evaluated for conditions of evaporative cooling and boiling. Also included are surface temperature results using a gold layered IR opaque surface on silicon. Four stages of the impingement process are identified: impact, boiling, near constant surface diameter evaporation, and final dry-out. For the boiling conditions there is initial nucleation followed by severe boiling, then near constant diameter evaporation resulting in shrinking of the droplet height. When a critical contact angle is reached during evaporation the droplet rapidly retracts to a smaller diameter reducing the contact area with the surface. This continues as a sequence of retractions until final dry out. The basic trends are the same for all surfaces, but the nano-structured surface has a lower dissipated energy during impact and enhances the heat transfer for evaporative cooling with a 20% shorter time to achieve final dry out.  相似文献

In order to obtain the knowledge necessary for developing new effective fire extinguishing technologies, we determined experimentally the gas temperature in the trace of water droplets streamlined by hot air flow. It was important to establish how much the temperature in the droplet trace decreases and how fast it recovery to the initial temperature field after the droplet evaporation. The following parameters were varied: droplet size from 1.3 mm to 1.7 mm, velocity from 1 m/s to 5 m/s, initial airflow temperature from 473 K to 773 K, number of droplets (one or two), and the arrangement of droplets relative to the hot inflow (serial or parallel). The study proves the theoretical hypothesis about a significant influence of evaporation on the temperature in the water droplet trace. When a temperature trace of water droplets is formed, irrespective of their arrangement, the role of the evaporation process strengthens with the gas flow temperature rising. Furthermore, the study specifies typical longitudinal dimensions of the aerodynamic and temperature traces of water droplets. It has been established that when droplets are located in series and in parallel, their combined impact on the temperature and velocity of the gas flow in the medium differs rather considerably.  相似文献

A pneumatic droplet generator to produce water/glycerin droplets smaller than the nozzle diameter is described. The generator consists of a T-junction with a nozzle fit into one opening, the second opening connected to a gas cylinder through a solenoid valve and the third connected to a length of steel tubing. The droplet generator is filled with liquid. Opening the valve for a preset time creates a pulse of alternating negative and positive pressure in the gas above the surface of the liquid, ejecting a single droplet through the nozzle. Droplet formation was photographed and the pressure variation in the droplet generator recorded. The effect of various experimental parameters, such as nozzle size, pressure pulse width and liquid properties on droplet formation was investigated. Small droplets could not be generated when liquid viscosity was too low or too high. For pure water, droplet diameters were several times that of the nozzle. Using more viscous glycerin mixtures, droplets with diameters as small as 65% of the nozzle diameter could be produced.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation, of the effect of radiation heat, on the evaporation of five droplet sizes of pure water, softly deposited on porous and non-porous ceramic solids, at temperature ranging from 75 to 250 °C. Both solids were instrumented with several surface and in-depth thermocouples, and had the same thermal properties. Results show that, the droplet evaporation time, and the surface recovery time for the porous solid were shorter than that of non-porous solid for the same droplet size under identical conditions. Also, smaller droplets were more efficient for cooling both solids. The results were compared with data for the evaporation of water droplets on similar ceramic solids heated from bottom (Abu-Zaid M; Atreya A (1994) J Heat Transfer 116: 694–701). The comparison shows that, the heat radiation has a significant effect of reducing evaporation time, recovery time, and droplet volume of influence for both solids, at the same initial surface temperature. A new approach to the analysis of droplet grouping in an oscillating gas flow is suggested. This is based on the investigation of droplet trajectories in the frame of reference moving with the phase velocity of the wave. Although the equations involved are relatively simple, the analysis shows distinctive characteristics of grouping and non-grouping cases. In the case of grouping, droplet trajectories converge to the points for which the ratio of flow velocity in this frame of reference and the amplitude of flow oscillations is less than 1, and the cosine of the arc sine of this ratio is positive. In the case of non-grouping, droplet trajectories in this frame of reference oscillate around the translational velocity close to the velocity of flow in the same frame of reference. The effect of droplet size on the grouping pattern is investigated. It has been pointed out that for the smaller droplets much more stable grouping is observed. The effect of droplet evaporation is studied in the limiting case when the contribution of the heat-up period can be ignored. It is shown that evaporation can lead to droplet grouping even in the case when the non-evaporating droplets are not grouped. This is related to the reduction in droplet diameter during the evaporation process. Coupling between gas and droplets is shown to decrease the grouping tendency. A qualitative agreement between predictions of the model and in-house experimental observations referring to Diesel engine sprays has been demonstrated.  相似文献

This paper presents a detailed numerical analysis of diesel engine spray structure induced by the Engine Combustion Network (ECN) Spray A at different injection pressures. The non-reacting simulations are performed using OpenFOAM where an Eulerian–Lagrangian model is adopted in the large eddy simulation (LES) framework. Effects of the LES mesh resolution as well as the spray model parameters are investigated with the focus on their impact on spray structure as the injection pressure varies. The predicted liquid and vapour penetration lengths agree well with the measurements at different injection pressures. The mixture fraction is well captured for the injection pressure of 100 and 150 MPa while a slight deviation from the measurements is observed for the injection pressure of 50 MPa near the nozzle. The parametric analysis confirms that the LES mesh resolution has significant effects on the results. A coarser mesh leads to higher liquid and vapour penetration lengths where the deviation from the measurements is larger, resulting in the highest error at the lowest injection pressure. As the mesh size increases, the droplet size distribution becomes narrower, its pick moves to the smaller droplet size and the probability of droplets with higher temperature increases. On the other hand, with increasing the mesh size, the carrier gas velocity decays slower and its radial dispersion decreases. It is found that the droplet characteristics are more affected by the mesh resolution when the injection pressure is the lowest while the opposite is true for the carrier phase. The number of Lagrangian particles also affects the droplet characteristics and the fuel-air mixing but their effects are not as significant as the mesh size. The results become less sensitive to the number of Lagrangian particles as the pressure injection decreases. Finally, the importance of the initial droplet size distribution is investigated, confirming its impact is marginal, particularly on the liquid length. It is observed that the initial droplet size is only important at very close to the nozzle and its impact on the spray structure becomes quickly insignificant due to the high rates of breakup and evaporation. This trend is consistent at different injection pressures.  相似文献

An experimental effort to understand the contribution of turbulence to the evaporation rate of fuel droplets has been performed with particular attention to conditions when the turbulence scale is smaller than the droplet diameter. N-heptane has been chosen as working fluid to give measurable evaporation rates from droplet images over relatively short experiment times. An active turbulence grid wind tunnel is built for the requirements of this experiment. A camera triggered by a pulse generator takes images of the droplets pinned on wires across the tunnel. The results show a small increase in evaporation rate with increasing turbulence intensity, and that mean flow around the droplets has more impact on evaporation than does the turbulence state.  相似文献

The interaction of evaporating droplets and hot catalyst particles plays a major role in heterogeneously catalysed reactions. The liquid feed is injected into a gas–solid flow and is mixed with the catalyst. The interaction phenomena determine the evaporation time which should be minimised to keep the reactor vessel small. First measurements with a bed of fixed hot FCC-particles (fluid catalytic cracking) and two model fluids have been conducted. The interactions of ethanol and water droplets with the hot bed surface were captured via a high-speed camera. While the ethanol droplet developed a stable steam cushion due to Leidenfrost phenomena, water showed intense interaction and steam explosions which induced repulsion and atomisation of the droplet.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to perform an accurate analysis of the evaporation of single component and binary mixture fuels sprays in a hot weakly turbulent pipe flow by means of experimental measurement and numerical simulation. This gives a deeper insight into the relationship between fuel composition and spray evaporation. The turbulence intensity in the test section is equal to 10%, and the integral length scale is three orders of magnitude larger than the droplet size while the turbulence microscale (Kolmogorov scales) is of same order as the droplet diameter. The spray produced by means of a calibrated droplet generator was injected in a gas flow electrically preheated. N-nonane, isopropanol, and their mixtures were used in the tests. The generalized scattering imaging technique was applied to simultaneously determine size, velocity, and spatial location of the droplets carried by the turbulent flow in the quartz tube. The spray evaporation was computed using a Lagrangian particle solver coupled to a gas-phase solver. Computations of spray mean diameter and droplet size distributions at different locations along the pipe compare very favorably with the measurement results. This combined research tool enabled further investigation concerning the influencing parameters upon the evaporation process such as the turbulence, droplet internal mixing, and liquid-phase thermophysical properties.  相似文献

Droplet streams for serial crystallography of proteins   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Serial diffraction of proteins requires an injection method to deliver analyte molecules—preferably uncharged, fully hydrated, spatially oriented, and with high flux—into a focused probe beam of electrons or X-rays that is only a few tens of microns in diameter. This work examines conventional Rayleigh sources and electrospray-assisted Rayleigh sources as to their suitability for this task. A comparison is made and conclusions drawn on the basis of time-resolved optical images of the droplet streams produced by these sources. Straight-line periodic streams of monodisperse droplets were generated with both sources, achieving droplet diameters of 4 and 1 micrometer, respectively, for the conventional and electrospray-assisted versions. Shrinkage of droplets by evaporation is discussed and quantified. It is shown experimentally that proteins pass undamaged through a conventional Rayleigh droplet source.  相似文献

Experimental study of water droplet boiling on hot, non-porous surfaces   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper, the results of a series of experimental tests on single- and multi-droplet boiling systems are presented and discussed. The main objectives of the present study are: a) to investigate experimentally the effect of the boiling onset on the evaporation rate of water droplets; b) to measure the evolution of the solid surface temperature during evaporation; c) to examine the possibility of improving spray cooling efficiencies. The behavior of small water droplets (from 10 to 50 μl) gently deposited on hot, non-porous surfaces is observed. The evaporation of multi-droplet arrays (50 and 100 μl) under the same conditions of the single-droplet tests is analyzed. In particular, the conditions which determine the onset of nucleate and film boiling are stressed out. In the experimental tests, the interaction of different materials with several multi-droplet systems is monitored by infrared thermography. The spray cooling efficiency is related to the solid temperature decrease as a function of the water mass flux. In the present study, the effect of varying the droplet volume and the mass flux is also analyzed and discussed. The results on the droplets evaporation time and on the solid surface transient temperature distribution are also compared with the data obtained by the same authors during the analysis of droplet evaporation in total absence of nucleate and film boiling. In order to analyze the different behavior of the evaporating droplet as a function of the solid surface thermal conductivity, evaporative transients on aluminum, stainless steel and macor (a glass-like, low-conductivity material) are considered.
