Transient, advective transport of a contaminant into a clean domain will exhibit a moving sharp front that separates contaminated and clean regions. Due to ‘numerical diffusion’—the combined effects of ‘cross‐wind diffusion’ and ‘artificial dispersion’—a numerical solution based on a first‐order (upwind) treatment will smear out the sharp front. The use of higher‐order schemes, e.g. QUICK (quadratic upwinding) reduces the smearing but can introduce non‐physical oscillations in the solution. A common approach to reduce numerical diffusion without oscillations is to use a scheme that blends low‐order and high‐order approximations of the advective transport. Typically, the blending is based on a parameter that measures the local monotonicity in the predicted scalar field. In this paper, an alternative approach is proposed for use in scalar transport problems where physical bounds CLow?C?CHigh on the scalar are known a priori. For this class of problems, the proposed scheme switches from a QUICK approximation to an upwind approximation whenever the predicted upwind nodal value falls outside of the physical range [CLow, CHigh]. On two‐dimensional steady‐state and one‐dimensional transient test problems predictions obtained with the proposed scheme are essentially indistinguishable from those obtained with monotonic flux‐limiter schemes. An analysis of the modified equation explains the observed performance of first‐ and second‐order time‐stepping schemes in predicting the advective transport of a step. In application to the transient two‐dimensional problem of contaminate transport into a streambed, predictions obtained with the proposed flux‐limiter scheme agree with those obtained with a scheme from the literature. A class of vector-parallel schemes for solution of steady compressible or incompressible viscous flow is developed and performance studies carried out. The algorithms employ an artificial transient treatment that permits rapid integration to a steady state. In the present work a four-stage explicit Runge-Kutta scheme employing variable local step size is utilized for the ODE system integration. The RK-4 scheme is restructured to allow vectorization and enhance concurrency in the calculation for a streamfunction-vorticity formulation of the flow problem. The parameters of the resulting RK scheme can be selected to accelerate convergence of the RK recursion. Four main procedures are considered which permit vector-parallel solution: a Jacobi update, a hybrid of the Jacobi and Gauss-Seidel method, red-black ordering and domain decomposition. Numerical performance studies are conducted with a representative viscous incompressible flow calculation. Results indicate that a scheme involving domain decomposition with a Gauss-Seidel type of update for the RK four-stage scheme is most effective and provides performance in excess of 8 Gflops on the Cray C-90.  相似文献

In this work, we present a total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme in the zero relaxation limit for nonlinear hyperbolic conservation law using flux limiters within the framework of a relaxation system that converts a nonlinear conservation law into a system of linear convection equations with nonlinear source terms. We construct a numerical flux for space discretization of the obtained relaxation system and modify the definition of the smoothness parameter depending on the direction of the flow so that the scheme obeys the physical property of hyperbolicity. The advantages of the proposed scheme are that it can give second‐order accuracy everywhere without introducing oscillations for 1‐D problems (at least with) smooth initial condition. Also, the proposed scheme is more efficient as it works for any non‐zero constant value of the flux limiter ? ? [0, 1], where other TVD schemes fail. The resulting scheme is shown to be TVD in the zero relaxation limit for 1‐D scalar equations. Bound for the limiter function is obtained. Numerical results support the theoretical results. This paper is the initial investigation into a new Lagrangian cell‐centered hydrodynamic scheme that is motivated by the desire for an algorithm that resists mesh imprinting and has reduced complexity. Key attributes of the new approach include multidimensional construction, the use of flux‐corrected transport (FCT) to achieve second order accuracy, automatic determination of the mesh motion through vertex fluxes, and vorticity control. Toward this end, vorticity preserving Lax–Wendroff (VPLW) type schemes for the two‐dimensional acoustic equations were analyzed and then implemented in a FCT algorithm. Here, mesh imprinting takes the form of anisotropic dispersion relationships. If the stencil for the LW methods is limited to nine points, four free parameters exist. Two parameters were fixed by insisting that no spurious vorticity be created. Dispersion analysis was used to understand how the remaining two parameters could be chosen to increase isotropy. This led to new VPLW schemes that suffer less mesh imprinting than the rotated Richtmyer method. A multidimensional, vorticity preserving FCT implementation was then sought using the most promising VPLW scheme to address the problem of spurious extrema. A well‐behaved first order scheme and a new flux limiter were devised in the process. The flux limiter is unique in that it acts on temporal changes and does not place a priori bounds on the solution. Numerical results have demonstrated that the vorticity preserving FCT scheme has comparable performance to an unsplit MUSCL‐H algorithm at high Courant numbers but with reduced mesh imprinting and superior symmetry preservation. The effect of the collision‐partner selection scheme on the accuracy and the efficiency of the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method is investigated. Several schemes that reduce the mean collision separation, including the fixed sub‐cell scheme, the transient adaptive sub‐cell scheme, and the virtual sub‐cell scheme, are evaluated. Additionally, a new scheme is proposed that limits the population from which collision partners are selected based on the distance traveled by a simulator and performs near‐neighbor collisions using this population. These collision‐partner selection schemes are assessed for Fourier flow (heat conduction between parallel plates) and a standard hypersonic benchmark problem (Mach 15.6 nitrogen flow over a 25–55° biconic). The new limited‐selection near‐neighbor scheme has superior performance compared to the other schemes for both flows and reduces both the spatial and temporal discretization errors relative to random‐selection and nearest‐neighbor collision‐partner selection schemes. In the framework of a cell-centered finite volume method (FVM), the advection scheme plays the most important role in developing FVMs to solve complicated fluid flow problems for a wide range of Reynolds numbers. Advection schemes have been widely developed for FVMs employing pressure-velocity coupling methodology in the incompressible flow limit. In this regard, the physical influence upwind scheme (PIS) is developed for a cell-centered finite volume coupled solver (FVCS) using a pressure-weighted interpolation method for linking the pressure and velocity fields. The well-known exponential differencing scheme and skew upwind differencing scheme are also deployed in the current FVCS and their numerical results are presented. The accuracy and convergence of the present PIS are evaluated solving flow in a lid-driven square cavity, a lid-driven skewed cavity, and over a backward-facing step (BFS). The flow within the lid-driven square cavity is numerically solved at Reynolds numbers from 400 to 10 000 on a relatively coarse mesh with respect to other reported solutions. The lid-driven skewed cavity test case at Reynolds number of 1000 demonstrates the numerical performance of the present PIS on nonorthogonal grids. The flow over a BFS at Reynolds number of 800 is numerically solved to examine capabilities of current FVCS employing the current PIS in inlet-outlet flow computations. The numerical results obtained by the current PIS are in excellent agreement with those of benchmark solutions of corresponding test cases. Incorporating implicit role of pressure terms in a pressure-weighted interpolation method and development of PIS provides satisfactory solution convergence alongside the numerical accuracy for the current FVCS. A particular numerical verification is performed for the V velocity calculation within the BFS flow field, which confirms the reliability of present PIS.  相似文献

A new monotonic scheme for the approximation of steady scalar transport is formulated and implemented within a collocated finite-volume/pressure-correction algorithm for general turbulent flows in complex geometries. The scheme is essentially a monotonic implementation of the quadratic QUICK interpolation and uses a continuous and compact limiter to secure monotonicity. The principal purpose is to allow an accurate and fully bounded, hence stable, approximation of turbulence convection in the context of two-equation eddy viscosity and Reynolds stress transport modelling of two- and three-dimensional flows, both subsonic and transonic. Among other benefits, this capability permits an assessment to be made of the adequacy of approximating turbulence convection with first-order upwind schemes in conjunction with higher-order formulations for mean-flow properties—a widespread practice. The performance characteristics of the bounded scheme are illustrated by reference to computations for scalar transport, for a transonic flow in a Laval nozzle, for one separated laminar flow and for two separated turbulent flows computed with a non-linear RNG model and full Reynolds stress closure.  相似文献

Finite volume methods on structured and unstructured meshes commonly use second‐order, upwind‐biased linear reconstruction schemes to approximate the convective terms. Limiters are employed to reduce the inherent variable overshoot and undershoot of these schemes in discontinuous regions; however, they also can significantly increase the numerical dissipation of a solution in smooth regions. This paper presents a novel nonlocal, nonmonotonic (NLNM) limiter developed by enforcing cell minima and maxima on dependent variable values projected to cell faces. The minimum and maximum values for a cell are determined primarily through recursive reference to the minimum and maximum values of its upwind neighbors. The new limiter has been implemented into an existing flow solver. Various test cases are presented, which highlight the ability of the NLNM limiter to eliminate nonphysical oscillations while maintaining negligible levels of limiter‐induced dissipation into the solution. Results from the new limiter are compared with those from other limited and unlimited second‐order upwind and first‐order upwind schemes. For the cases examined in the study, the NLNM limiter was found to improve accuracy without significantly decreasing overall simulation efficiency and robustness.Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper establishes the entropy convergence of a new two-value high resolution finite volume scheme with slope relaxation for conservation laws. This scheme, motivated by the general method of high resolution schemes that have high-order accuracy in smooth regions of solutions and are free of oscillations near discontinuities, unifies and evolves slopes directly with a slope relaxation equation that governs the evolution of slopes in both smooth and discontinuous regions. Proper choices of slopes are realized adaptively via a relaxation parameter. The scheme is shown to be total-variation-bounded (TVB) stable and satisfies cell-entropy inequalities.  相似文献

This study examines the effect of discretization schemes for the convection term in the constitutive equation on numerical solutions of viscoelastic fluid flows. For this purpose, a temporally evolving mixing layer, a two-dimensional vortex pair interacting with a wall, and a fully developed turbulent channel flow are selected as test cases, and eight different discretization schemes are considered. Among them, the first-order upwind difference scheme (UD) and artificial diffusion scheme (AD), which are commonly used in the literature, show most stable and smooth solutions even for highly extensional flows. However, the stress fields are smeared too much by these schemes and the corresponding flow fields are quite different from those obtained by higher-order upwind difference schemes. Among higher-order upwind difference schemes investigated in this study, a third-order compact upwind difference scheme (CUD3) with locally added AD shows stable and most accurate solutions for highly extensional flows even at relatively high Weissenberg numbers.  相似文献

A heuristic technique is developed for a nonlinear magnetohydrodynamics(MHD) Jeffery-Hamel problem with the help of the feed-forward artificial neural network(ANN) optimized with the genetic algorithm(GA) and the sequential quadratic programming(SQP) method. The two-dimensional(2D) MHD Jeffery-Hamel problem is transformed into a higher order boundary value problem(BVP) of ordinary differential equations(ODEs). The mathematical model of the transformed BVP is formulated with the ANN in an unsupervised manner. The training of the weights of the ANN is carried out with the evolutionary calculation based on the GA hybridized with the SQP method for the rapid local convergence. The proposed scheme is evaluated on the variants of the Jeffery-Hamel flow by varying the Reynold number, the Hartmann number, and the angles of the walls. A large number of simulations are performed with an extensive analysis to validate the accuracy, convergence, and effectiveness of the scheme. The comparison of the standard numerical solution and the analytic solution establishes the correctness of the proposed designed methodologies.  相似文献

A finite difference scheme based on flux difference splitting is presented for the solution of the one-dimensional shallow-water equations in open channels, together with an extension to two-dimensional flows. A linearized problem, analogous to that of Riemann for gas dynamics, is defined and a scheme, based on numerical characteristic decomposition, is presented for obtaining approximate solutions to the linearized problem. The method of upwind differencing is used for the resulting scalar problems, together with a flux limiter for obtaining a second-order scheme which avoids non-physical, spurious oscillations. The scheme is applied to a one-dimensional dam-break problem, and to a problem of flow in a river whose geometry induces a region of supercritical flow. The scheme is also applied to a two-dimensional dam-break problem. The numerical results are compared with the exact solution, or other numerical results, where available.  相似文献

A new resolution-enhancing technique called derivative artificial compression method is developed with multi-dimensional extension. The method is constructed via applying high-resolution difference schemes on derivative equations of conservation laws. In this way, one could overcome the defect of accuracy decay at extreme points that has plagued almost all high-resolution schemes. The new method has high resolution, low dissipation and low diffusion properties, and could enhance the resolution (of numerical solution) both at discontinuities and at extreme points. Numerical experiments are implemented using initial value problems of single conservation law, one-dimensional shock-tube problem, two-dimensional Riemann problems, double Mach reflection problem, and a shock reflection from a wedge. Resolutions of discontinuities, extremes and fine structures are compared between the original TVD scheme, TVD scheme with artificial compression method and TVD scheme with derivative artificial compression method.  相似文献

The computational efficiency of three numerical schemes has been examined for the solution of a linearized system of equations resulting from the finite element discretization of a viscoelastic fluid flow problem. The first scheme is a modified frontal solver, which solves the linear system of equations directly. The other two, one based on a biconjugate gradient stabilized (BiCGStab) method and another based on a generalized minimal residual (GMRES) method, are iterative schemes. The stick-slip problem and the four-to-one contraction problem were analyzed and the viscoelastic fluid was assumed to obey the Oldroyd-B model. The two iterative schemes are superior to the direct scheme in terms of CPU time consumed and the BiCGStab scheme is even faster than the GMRES scheme. The range of convergence for both iterative schemes is compatible with that of the direct scheme.  相似文献

A composite finite volume method (FVM) is developed on unstructured triangular meshes and tested for the two‐dimensional free‐surface flow equations. The methodology is based on the theory of the remainder effect of finite difference schemes and the property that the numerical dissipation and dispersion of the schemes are compensated by each other in a composite scheme. The composite FVM is formed by global composition of several Lax–Wendroff‐type steps followed by a diffusive Lax–Friedrich‐type step, which filters out the oscillations around shocks typical for the Lax–Wendroff scheme. To test the efficiency and reliability of the present method, five typical problems of discontinuous solutions of two‐dimensional shallow water are solved. The numerical results show that the proposed method, which needs no use of a limiter function, is easy to implement, is accurate, robust and is highly stable. A simple methodology for a high‐resolution scheme to be applied to compressible multicomponent flows with shock waves is investigated. The method is intended for use with direct numerical simulation or large eddy simulation of compressible multicomponent flows. The method dynamically adds non‐linear artificial diffusivity locally in space to capture different types of discontinuities such as a shock wave, contact surface or material interface while a high‐order compact differencing scheme resolves a broad range of scales in flows. The method is successfully applied to several one‐dimensional and two‐dimensional compressible multicomponent flow problems with shock waves. The results are in good agreement with experiments and earlier computations qualitatively and quantitatively. The method captures unsteady shock and material discontinuities without significant spurious oscillations if initial start‐up errors are properly avoided. Comparisons between the present numerical scheme and high‐order weighted essentially non‐oscillatory (WENO) schemes illustrate the advantage of the present method for resolving a broad range of scales of turbulence while capturing shock waves and material interfaces. Also the present method is expected to require less computational cost than popular high‐order upwind‐biased schemes such as WENO schemes. The mass conservation for each species is satisfied due to the strong conservation form of governing equations employed in the method. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A virtual‐characteristic approach is developed for thermo‐flow with finite‐volume methodology in which a multidimensional characteristic (MC) scheme is applied along with artificial compressibility. To obtain compatibility equations and pseudo‐characteristics, energy equation is taken into account in the MC scheme. With this inherent upwinding of convective fluxes, no artificial viscosity is required even at high Reynolds numbers. Another remarkable advantage of the MC scheme lies in its faster convergence rate with respect to the averaging scheme that is found to exhibit substantial delays in convergence. As benchmarks, forced and mixed convections in a cavity and in flow over cylinder and between parallel plates are examined for a wide range of Reynolds, Grashof, and Prandtl numbers. The MC and averaging schemes are applied for simulation purposes. Results show the better performance of the MC scheme in forced and mixed convections. Results confirm the robustness of the MC scheme in terms of accuracy and convergence. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, we describe some existing slope limiters (Cockburn and Shu's slope limiter and Hoteit's slope limiter) for the two‐dimensional Runge–Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) method on arbitrary unstructured triangular grids. We describe the strategies for detecting discontinuities and for limiting spurious oscillations near such discontinuities, when solving hyperbolic systems of conservation laws by high‐order discontinuous Galerkin methods. The disadvantage of these slope limiters is that they depend on a positive constant, which is, for specific hydraulic problems, difficult to estimate in order to eliminate oscillations near discontinuities without decreasing the high‐order accuracy of the scheme in the smooth regions. We introduce the idea of a simple modification of Cockburn and Shu's slope limiter to avoid the use of this constant number. This modification consists in: slopes are limited so that the solution at the integration points is in the range spanned by the neighboring solution averages. Numerical results are presented for a nonlinear system: the shallow water equations. Four hydraulic problems of discontinuous solutions of two‐dimensional shallow water are presented. The idealized dam break problem, the oblique hydraulic jump problem, flow in a channel with concave bed and the dam break problem in a converging–diverging channel are solved by using the different slope limiters. Numerical comparisons on unstructured meshes show a superior accuracy with the modified slope limiter. Moreover, it does not require the choice of any constant number for the limiter condition.
