In this paper, the vibration behavior and control of a clamped–free rotating flexible cantilever arm with fully covered active constrained layer damping (ACLD) treatment are investigated. The arm is rotating in a horizontal plane in which the gravitational effect and rotary inertia are neglected. The stress–strain relationship for the viscoelastic material (VEM) is described by a complex shear modulus while the shear deformations in the two piezoelectric layers are neglected. Hamilton's principle in conjunction with finite element method (FEM) is used to derive the non-linear coupled differential equations of motion and the associated boundary conditions that describe the rigid hub angle rotation, the arm transverse displacement and the axial deformations of the three-layer composite. This refined model takes into account the effects of centrifugal stiffening due to the rotation of the beam and the potential energies of the VEM due to extension and bending. Active controllers are designed with PD for the piezosensor and actuator. The vibration frequencies and damping factors of the closed-loop beam/ACLD system are obtained after solving the characteristic complex eigenvalue problem numerically. The effects of different rotating speed, thickness ratio and loss factor of the VEM as well as different controller gain on the damped frequency and damping ratio are presented. The results of this study will be useful in the design of adaptive and smart structures for vibration suppression and control in rotating structures such as rotorcraft blades or robotic arms.  相似文献

A detailed model for the beams with partially debonded active constraining damping (ACLD) treatment is presented. In this model, the transverse displacement of the constraining layer is considered to be non-identical to that of the host structure. In the perfect bonding region, the viscoelastic core is modelled to carry both peel and shear stresses, while in the debonding area, it is assumed that no peel and shear stresses be transferred between the host beam and the constraining layer. The adhesive layer between the piezoelectric sensor and the host beam is also considered in this model. In active control, the positive position feedback control is employed to control the first mode of the beam. Based on this model, the incompatibility of the transverse displacements of the active constraining layer and the host beam is investigated. The passive and active damping behaviors of the ACLD patch with different thicknesses, locations and lengths are examined. Moreover, the effects of debonding of the damping layer on both passive and active control are examined via a simulation example. The results show that the incompatibility of the transverse displacements is remarkable in the regions near the ends of the ACLD patch especially for the high order vibration modes. It is found that a thinner damping layer may lead to larger shear strain and consequently results in a larger passive and active damping. In addition to the thickness of the damping layer, its length and location are also key factors to the hybrid control. The numerical results unveil that edge debonding can lead to a reduction of both passive and active damping, and the hybrid damping may be more sensitive to the debonding of the damping layer than the passive damping.  相似文献

Active constrained layer damping (ACLD) treatment increases the efficiency of passive constrained layer damping (PCLD) treatment, but in case of circuit failure, only the decreased efficiency of PCLD treatment is available. The efficiency of the ordinary PCLD treatment can be enhanced by adding a stressed poly vinyl chloride (PVC) layers on the base beam instead of using viscoelastic materials. Hamilton Principle in conjunction with finite element method is used to derive the non-linear differential equations of motion for a rotating beam. Using proportional feedback controllers, the complex closed loop eigenvalue problem is developed and solved numerically. The effect of rotational speed of the beam, initial strain and other parameters of the PVC layer is investigated. To prove the effectiveness of the new technique, experimental investigations have also been carried out.  相似文献

The main disadvantage of active constrained layer damping treatment is the reduced transmissibility of active forces. This problem can be solved up to certain extent by using edge anchors. These edge anchors or stiffeners increase the transmissivity of forces only at very high feedback gains but decrease the effectiveness of passive constrained layer damping (PCLD) treatment. The efficiency of the passive constrained layer damping treatment can be improved drastically by adding the stand-off-layer (SOL) between the viscoelastic layer and the base beam. This technique has additional advantages as well. Firstly, it increases the viscoelastic strain so that more energy is dissipated via viscoelastic layer. Secondly, it enhances the effect of active forces and moments even without using edge anchors because the shear modulus of the SOL is in the range 108–109 N/m2. Hamilton’s principle in conjunction of finite element method is used to derive the equations of motion. The complex eigenvalue is developed and solved numerically by using simple proportional feedback control strategy. Results are compared with ordinary active constrained layer damping (ACLD) treatment in order to highlight the effectiveness of the proposed technique. Validity of the proposed treatment has also been verified experimentally.  相似文献

Based on the transfer matrix method of exploring the circular cylindrical shell treated with active constrained layer damping(i.e., ACLD), combined with the analytical solution of the Helmholtz equation for a point source, a multi-point multipole virtual source simulation method is for the first time proposed for solving the acoustic radiation problem of a submerged ACLD shell. This approach, wherein some virtual point sources are assumed to be evenly distributed on the axial line of the cylindrical shell, and the sound pressure could be written in the form of the sum of the wave functions series with the undetermined coefficients, is demonstrated to be accurate to achieve the radiation acoustic pressure of the pulsating and oscillating spheres respectively. Meanwhile, this approach is proved to be accurate to obtain the radiation acoustic pressure for a stiffened cylindrical shell. Then, the chosen number of the virtual distributed point sources and truncated number of the wave functions series are discussed to achieve the approximate radiation acoustic pressure of an ACLD cylindrical shell. Applying this method, different radiation acoustic pressures of a submerged ACLD cylindrical shell with different boundary conditions, different thickness values of viscoelastic and piezoelectric layer, different feedback gains for the piezoelectric layer and coverage of ACLD are discussed in detail. Results show that a thicker thickness and larger velocity gain for the piezoelectric layer and larger coverage of the ACLD layer can obtain a better damping effect for the whole structure in general. Whereas, laying a thicker viscoelastic layer is not always a better treatment to achieve a better acoustic characteristic.  相似文献

Modal parameters of structures are often used as inputs for finite element model updating, vibration control, structural design or structural health monitoring (SHM). In order to test the robustness of these methods, it is a common practice to introduce uncertainty on the eigenfrequencies and modal damping coefficients under the form of a Gaussian perturbation, while the uncertainty on the mode shapes is modeled in the form of independent Gaussian noise at each measured location. A more rigorous approach consists however in adding uncorrelated noise on the time domain responses at each sensor before proceeding to an operational modal analysis. In this paper, we study in detail the resulting uncertainty when modal analysis is performed using the stochastic subspace identification method. A Monte-Carlo simulation is performed on a simply supported beam, and the uncertainty on a set of 5000 modal parameters identified with the stochastic subspace identification method is discussed. Next, 4000 experimental modal identifications of a small clamped–free steel plate equipped with 8 piezoelectric patches are performed in order to confirm the conclusions drawn in the numerical case study. In particular, the results point out that the uncertainty on eigenfrequencies and modal damping coefficients may exhibit a non-normal distribution, and that there is a non-negligible spatial correlation between the uncertainty on mode shapes at sensors of different locations.  相似文献

This work deals with the active vibration control of beams with smart constrained layer damping (SCLD) treatment. SCLD design consists of viscoelastic shear layer sandwiched between two layers of piezoelectric sensors and actuator. This composite SCLD when bonded to a vibrating structure acts as a smart treatment. The sensor piezoelectric layer measures the vibration response of the structure and a feedback controller is provided which regulates the axial deformation of the piezoelectric actuator (constraining layer), thereby providing adjustable and significant damping in the structure. The damping offered by SCLD treatment has two components, active action and passive action. The active action is transmitted from the piezoelectric actuator to the host structure through the viscoelastic layer. The passive action is through the shear deformation in the viscoelastic layer. The active action apart from providing direct active control also adjusts the passive action by regulating the shear deformation in the structure. The passive damping component of this design eliminates spillover, reduces power consumption, improves robustness and reliability of the system, and reduces vibration response at high-frequency ranges where active damping is difficult to implement. A beam finite element model has been developed based on Timoshenko's beam theory with partially covered SCLD. The Golla-Hughes-McTavish (GHM) method has been used to model the viscoelastic layer. The dissipation co-ordinates, defined using GHM approach, describe the frequency-dependent viscoelastic material properties. Models of PCLD and purely active systems could be obtained as a special case of SCLD. Using linear quadratic regulator (LQR) optimal control, the effects of the SCLD on vibration suppression performance and control effort requirements are investigated. The effects of the viscoelastic layer thickness and material properties on the vibration control performance are investigated.  相似文献

This paper presents the implementation of autoparametric phenomena to reduce the symmetrical vibration of a curved beam/panel under external harmonic excitation. The internal energy transfer of a first symmetric mode into first anti-symmetric mode in a curved panel is one example of autoparametric vibration absorber effect. This is similar to the vibration energy transfer from the resonance of a primary structure to the resonance of a secondary spring–mass (tuned mass damper). The nonlinear response of a curved beam is analyzed using an equation with two modes, and a shaker test. The effect of different configurations of the curve beam/panel, including damping ratios and excitation levels, on the energy transfer of the first symmetric mode to the first anti-symmetric mode was studied.The conventional tuned mass damper (TMD) can reduce the resonance response by energy transfer using damping dissipation, whereas an autoparametric vibration absorber (AVA) can reduce the resonance response by energy transfer using parametric interaction. The results indicate that there is a non-absorption region in which vibration is amplified. For the AVA, the non-absorption region can be minimized by tuning the resonance frequency of the first anti-symmetric mode to half of the first symmetric mode resonance frequency using additional mass. No additional damping material is required for achieving sufficient vibration reduction. The AVA can maintain reliable performance in hot and corrosive environments where damping material cannot perform effectively. This paper presents the first successful experimental results of an autoparametric vibration absorption mechanism in a curved beam.  相似文献

This paper discusses the well-known, but often misunderstood, concept of complex modes of dynamic structures. It shows how complex modes can be interpreted in terms of wave propagation phenomena caused by either localized damping or propagation to the surrounding media. Numerical simulation results are presented for different kinds of structures exhibiting modal and wave propagation characteristics: straight beams, an L-shaped beam, and a three-dimensional frame structure. The input/output transfer relations of these structures are obtained using a spectral formulation known as the spectral element method (SEM). With this method, it is straightforward to use infinite elements, usually known as throw-off elements, to represent the propagation to infinity, which is a possible cause of modal complexity. With the SEM model, the exact dynamic behavior of structures can be investigated. The mode complexity of these structures is investigated. It is shown that mode complexity characterizes a behavior that is half-way between purely modal and purely propagative. A coefficient for quantifying mode complexity is introduced. The mode complexity coefficient consists of the correlation coefficient between the real and imaginary parts of the eigenvector, or of the operational deflection shape (ODS). It is shown that, far from discontinuities, this coefficient is zero in the case of pure wave propagation in which case the plot of the ODS in the complex plane is a perfect circle. In the other extreme situation, a finite structure without damping (or with proportional damping), where the mode shape (or the ODS) is a straight line on the complex plane, has a unitary complexity coefficient. For simple beam structures, it is shown that the mode complexity factor can also be calculated by curve-fitting the mode to an ellipse and computing the ratio of its radii.  相似文献

Semi-active vibration control based on magnetorheological (MR) materials offers excellent potential for high bandwidth control through rapid variations in the rheological properties of the fluid under varying magnetic field. Such fluids may be conveniently applied to partial or more critical components of a large structure to realize more efficient and compact vibration control mechanism with variable damping. This study investigates the properties and vibration responses of a partially treated multi-layer MR fluid beam. The governing equations of a partially treated multi-layered MR beam are formulated using finite element method and Ritz formulation. The validity of the proposed finite element formulations is demonstrated by comparing the results with those obtained from the Ritz formulation and the experimental measurements. The properties of different configurations of a partially treated MR-fluid beam are evaluated to investigate the influences of the location and length of the MR-fluid for different boundary conditions. The properties in terms of natural frequencies and loss factors corresponding to various modes are evaluated under different magnetic field intensities and compared with those of the fully treated beams. The effect of location of the fluid treatment on deflection mode shapes is also investigated. The forced vibration responses of the various configurations of partially treated MR sandwich beam are also evaluated under harmonic force excitations. The results suggest that the natural frequencies and transverse displacement response of the partially treated MR beams are strongly influenced not only by the intensity of the applied magnetic field, but also by the location and the length of the fluid pocket. The application of partial treatment could also alter the deflection pattern of the beam, particularly the location of the peak deflection.  相似文献

The dynamic behaviors of multi-layer sandwich beams are investigated through single degree-of-freedom (SDOF) transformation. The frequency response of the multi-layer sandwich beam is obtained using finite element code COMSOL and is transformed to a SDOF system with the same frequency response. Hence, the mass, spring constant and damping coefficient of the sandwich beams with different lengths and number of visco-elastic layers can be investigated. Further, viscous damping and structural damping models are individually employed to simulate the damping effect of the sandwich beam. The frequency responses from both models are compared with that from COMSOL and experiment. The resonant peak and resonant frequency of the SDOF system using structural damping model is more consistent with that from COMSOL. The experimental result demonstrates that the response of the sandwich beam can be predicted through COMSOL and SDOF transformation.  相似文献

This paper describes a procedure for detecting structural damage based on a micro-genetic algorithm using incomplete and noisy modal test data. As the number of sensors used to measure modal data is normally small when compared with the degrees of freedom of the finite element model of the structure, the incomplete mode shape data are first expanded to match with all degrees of freedom of the finite element model under consideration. The elemental energy quotient difference is then employed to locate the damage domain approximately. Finally, a micro-genetic algorithm is used to quantify the damage extent by minimizing the errors between the measured data and numerical results. The process may be either of single-level or implemented through two-level search strategies. The study has covered the use of frequencies only and the combined use of both frequencies and mode shapes. The proposed method is applied to a single-span simply supported beam and a three-span continuous beam with multiple damage locations. In the study, the modal test data are simulated numerically using the finite element method. The measurement errors of modal data are simulated by superimposing random noise with appropriate magnitudes. The effectiveness of using frequencies and both frequencies and mode shapes as the data for quantification of damage extent are examined. The effects of incomplete and noisy modal test data on the accuracy of damage detection are also discussed.  相似文献

This paper investigates the frequency dependent viscoelastic dynamics of a multifunctional composite structure from finite element analysis and experimental validation. The frequency-dependent behavior of the stiffness and damping of a viscoelastic material directly affects the system's modal frequencies and damping, and results in complex vibration modes and differences in the relative phase of vibration. A second order three parameter Golla–Hughes–McTavish (GHM) method and a second order three fields Anelastic Displacement Fields (ADF) approach are used to implement the viscoelastic material model, enabling the straightforward development of time domain and frequency domain finite elements, and describing the frequency dependent viscoelastic behavior. Considering the parameter identification a strategy to estimate the fractional order of the time derivative and the relaxation time is outlined. Agreement between the curve fits using both the GHM and ADF and experiment is within 0.001 percent error. Continuing efforts are addressing the material modulus comparison of the GHM and the ADF model. There may be a theoretical difference between viscoelastic degrees of freedom at nodes and elements, but their numerical results are very close to each other in the specific frequency range of interest. With identified model parameters, numerical simulation is carried out to predict the damping behavior in its first two vibration modes. The experimental testing on the layered composite beam validates the numerical predication. Experimental results also show that elastic modulus measured from dynamic response yields more accurate results than static measurement, such as tensile testing, especially for elastomers.  相似文献

以声子晶体理论为基础,设计了一种具有超阻尼特性的X形局域共振结构,分析了周期性附加X形局域共振的梁弯曲振动传播特性.利用拉格朗日方程分析了X形局域共振结构动力学等效特性,揭示了该结构的阻尼放大的机理,分析了几何结构参数对于带隙特性的影响,并利用有限元法验证了X形局域共振结构的超阻尼特性.研究结果表明,周期性附加X形局域结构能够有效地抑制低频弯曲振动在梁中的传播,产生超阻尼特性,实现低频、宽带的减振效果,为结构的低频减振提供了一个新的设计方案.  相似文献

Integrated mechanics and a finite element method are presented for predicting the damping of doubly curved laminates and laminated shell composite structures. Damping mechanics are formulated in curvilinear co-ordinates from ply to structural level and the structural modal loss factors are calculated using the energy dissipation method. The modelling of damping at the laminate level is based on first order shear shell theory. An eight-node shell damping finite element is developed. Comparisons of the present model with classical and discrete layer laminate damping theory predictions are shown. Modal damping and natural frequencies of composite plates and open cylindrical shells were measured and correlated with predicted results. Parametric studies illustrate the effect of curvature and lamination on modal damping and natural frequency.  相似文献

Galloping refers to wind-induced, low-frequency, large-amplitude oscillations that have been more frequently observed for a bundle conductor than for a single conductor. In the present work two different models are built to investigate the galloping of a bundle conductor: (1) a finite curved beam element method and (2) a hybrid model based on curved beam element theory. The finite curved beam element model is effective in dealing with the spacers between the bundled conductors and the joint between the conductors and spacers that can be simulated as a rigid joint or a hinge. Furthermore, the finite curved beam element model can be used to deal with large deformation. The hybrid model invokes the small deformation hypothesis and has a high computational efficiency. A hybrid model based on conventional cable element theory is also programmed to be compared with the aforementioned models based on curved beam element theory. Numerical examples are presented to assess the accuracy of the different models in predicting the equilibrium conductor position, natural frequencies and galloping amplitude. The results show that the curved beam element models, involving more degrees of freedom and coupling of translational and torsional motion, are more accurate at simulating the static and dynamic characters of an iced quad-conductor bundle. The use of hinges, rather than rigid connections, reduces the structural response amplitudes of a galloping conductor bundle.  相似文献

The governing equation for the finite element analysis of the panel flutter of composite plates including structural damping is derived from Hamilton's principle. The first order shear deformable plate theory has been applied to structural modelling so as to obtain the finite element eigenvalue equation. The unsteady aerodynamic load in a supersonic flow is computed by using the linear piston theory. The critical dynamic pressures for composite plates have been calculated to investigate the effects of structural damping on flutter boundaries. The effects are dependent on fiber orientation because flutter mode can be weak or strong in the fiber orientation of composite plates. Structural damping plays an important role in flutter stability with low aerodynamic damping but would not affect the flutter boundary with high aerodynamic damping.  相似文献

In this paper, mode shapes of a cracked beam with a rectangular cross section beam are analysed using finite element method. The 3D beam element is applied for this finite element analysis. The influence of the coupling mechanism between horizontal bending and vertical bending vibrations due to the crack on the mode shapes is investigated. Due to the coupling mechanism the mode shapes of a beam change from plane curves to space curves. Thus, the existence of the crack can be detected based on the mode shapes: when the mode shapes are space curves there is a crack in the beam. Also, when there is a crack, the mode shapes have distortions or sharp changes at the crack position. Thus, the position of the crack can be determined as a position at which the mode shapes exhibit such distortions or sharp changes. While in previous studies using 2D beam element, distortions in the mode shapes caused by a small crack could not be detected, these distortions in the case using the 3D beam element can be amplified and inspected clearly by using the projections of the mode shapes on appropriate planes. The quantitative analysis is also implemented to relate the size and position of the crack with the observed coupled modes. These results can be applied for crack detection of a beam. In this paper, the stiffness matrix of a cracked element obtained from fracture mechanics is presented and numerical simulations of three case studies are provided.  相似文献

Microelectronic mechanical (MEM) beam resonators with high quality factors are always preferred in practical applications. As one of the damping sources, thermoelastic damping (TED) caused by irreversible heat flows is usually considered as an upper limit of the overall damping effect. A new method is proposed in this work to compensate TED by taking advantage of the piezoresistive effect. Such a method is implemented by applying an electrostatic field along the beam length with a negative piezoresistive coefficient. During a resonance, the stretched part of the beam generates a higher electrical power density and thus a higher temperature, while the compressed region leads to a lower temperature. Such a temperature distribution is opposite to the temperature change caused by the thermoelastic effect. The working principle is described by a set of coupled differential equations, which are subsequently solved by the finite element method. The result indicates that the TED in the beam resonators can be completely compensated when the strength of electrical field is tuned to a critical value, namely CEF. The value of the CEF is further analyzed by a series of parametric studies on various material properties and geometric factors.  相似文献

The vibration and dynamic stability of a traveling sandwich beam are studied using the finite element method. The damping layer is assumed to be linear viscoelastic and almost incompressible. The extensional and shear moduli of the viscoelastic material are characterized by complex quantities. Complex-eigenvalue problems are solved by the state-space method, and the natural frequencies and modal loss factors of the composite beam are extracted. The effects of stiffness and thickness ratio of the viscoelastic and constrained layers on natural frequencies and modal loss factors are reported. Tension fluctuations are the dominant source of excitation in a traveling sandwich material, and the regions of dynamic instability are determined by modified Bolotin's method. Numerical results show that the constrained damping layer stabilizes the traveling sandwich beam.  相似文献
