By carefully analyzing the low temperature density dependence of 2D conductivity in undoped high-mobility n-GaAs heterostructures, we conclude that the 2D metal-insulator transition in this 2D electron system is a density inhomogeneity driven percolation transition due to the breakdown of screening in the random charged impurity disorder background. In particular, our measured conductivity exponent of approximately 1.4 approaches the 2D percolation exponent value of 4/3 at low temperatures and our experimental data are inconsistent with there being a zero-temperature quantum critical point in our system.  相似文献

We report studies of the behaviour of a single driven domain wall in the 2-dimensional non-equilibrium zero temperature random-field Ising model, closely above the depinning threshold. It is found that even for very weak disorder, the domain wall moves through the system in percolative fashion. At depinning, the fraction of spins that are flipped by the proceeding avalanche vanishes with the same exponent as the infinite percolation cluster in percolation theory. With decreasing disorder strength, however, the size of the critical region decreases. Our numerical simulation data appear to reflect a crossover behaviour to an exponent at zero disorder strength. The conclusions of this paper strongly rely on analytical arguments. A scaling theory in terms of the disorder strength and the magnetic field is presented that gives the values of all critical exponent except for one, the value of which is estimated from scaling arguments.

We study homogeneous, independent percolation on general quasi-transitive graphs. We prove that in the disorder regime where all clusters are finite almost surely, in fact the expectation of the cluster size is finite. This extends a well-known theorem by Menshikov and Aizenman & Barsky to all quasi-transitive graphs. Moreover we deduce that in this disorder regime the cluster size distribution decays exponentially, extending a result of Aizenman & Newman. Our results apply to both edge and site percolation, as well as long range (edge) percolation. The proof is based on a modification of the Aizenman & Barsky method.  相似文献

In this article we study the impact of the spin-orbit interaction on the electron quantum confinement for narrow gap semiconductor quantum dots. The model formulation includes: (1) the effective one-band Hamiltonian approximation; (2) the position- and energy-dependent quasi-particle effective mass approximation; (3) the finite hard wall confinement potential; and (4) the spin-dependent Ben Daniel-Duke boundary conditions. The Hartree-Fock approximation is also utilized for evaluating the characteristics of a two-electron quantum dot system. In our calculation, we describe the spin-orbit interaction which comes from both the spin-dependent boundary conditions and the Rashba term (for two-electron quantum dot system). It can significantly modify the electron energy spectrum for InAs semiconductor quantum dots built in the GaAs matrix. The energy state spin-splitting is strongly dependent on the dot size and reaches an experimentally measurable magnitude for relatively small dots. In addition, we have found the Coulomb interaction and the spin-splitting are suppressed in quantum dots with small height. A new approach based on the invariant embedding method for the self-consistent calculation of electronic structure of quantum wells is presented and is applied to both neutral quantum well and parabolic quantum well. Numerical results obtained for these structures agree very well with those of previous theoretical and experiment studies. The present approach is expected to lead to a more efficient and stable scheme for the calculation of electronic band structure of quantum structures. Realistic boundary conditions are naturally taken into account in the present calculation which provides a convenient way for studying boundary effects. Received 21 September  相似文献

Finite size effects on the phase transition in the 2D Potts model with open boundary conditions are studied with Wang-Landau Monte Carlo simulations. We show the lattice size dependent cross-over from first order to continuous phase transition and discuss it in terms of surface induced disorder and size dependence of the latent heat.  相似文献

We propose a novel approach for spectroscopic characterization of quantum systems. A superconducting quantum system—an artificial atom—is coupled asymmetrically to two open-end transmission lines (1D half-spaces). The lines themselves are strongly decoupled from each other. This results in suppression of the direct microwave propagation from one side to another. The atom, excited from the weaker coupled side relaxes with photon emission preferably to the stronger coupled side. By measuring the emission spectrum, we reconstruct the energy levels of the artificial atom. Our method allows to reject the excitation tone and to detect only the elastically scattered emission corresponding to intra-atomic transitions. We also demonstrate visualization of the higher-level transitions by populating the excited levels. Such a system does not have an optical analog with natural atoms or quantum dots coupled to two half spaces.  相似文献

We study the delocalization effect of a short-range repulsive interaction on the ground state of a finite density of spinless fermions in strongly disordered one dimensional lattices. The density matrix renormalization group method is used to explore the charge density and the sensitivity of the ground state energy with respect to the boundary condition (the persistent current) for a wide range of parameters (carrier density, interaction and disorder). Analytical approaches are developed and allow to understand some mechanisms and limiting conditions. For weak interaction strength, one has a Fermi glass of Anderson localized states, while in the opposite limit of strong interaction, one has a correlated array of charges (Mott insulator). In the two cases, the system is strongly insulating and the ground state energy is essentially invariant under a twist of the boundary conditions. Reducing the interaction strength from large to intermediate values, the quantum melting of the solid array gives rise to a more homogeneous distribution of charges, and the ground state energy changes when the boundary conditions are twisted. In individual chains, this melting occurs by abrupt steps located at sample-dependent values of the interaction where an (avoided) level crossing between the ground state and the first excitation can be observed. Important charge reorganizations take place at the avoided crossings and the persistent currents are strongly enhanced around the corresponding interaction value. These large delocalization effects become smeared and reduced after ensemble averaging. They mainly characterize half filling and strong disorder, but they persist away of this optimal condition. Using the scattering-matrix method, we investigate the influences of boundary conditions on thermal conductance in quantum wire with structural defect. A comparison between the thermal conductances is made when stress-free, hard-wall, and mixed boundary conditions are applied for acoustic transport leads. The results show that the quantized thermal conductance plateau at very low temperature can be observed only in transport lead with stress-free boundary condition. For hard-wall or mixed boundary conditions, qualitatively different thermal conductance characteristics are found. Moreover, we find that the behavior of the thermal conductance sensitively depend on the geometric parameters and the position of the defect in quantum wire.  相似文献

Boundary conditions strongly affect the results of numerical computations for finite size inhomogeneous or incommensurate structures. We present a method which allows to deal with this problem, both for ground state and for critical properties: it combines fluctuating boundary conditions and specific histogram techniques. Our approach concerns classical systems possessing a continuous symmetry as well as quantum systems. In particular, current-current correlation functions, which probe large scale coherence of the states, can be accurately evaluated. We illustrate our method on a frustrated two dimensional XY model. A numerical scheme is developed to simulate the percolating behavior of conductive particles within a non-conductive matrix film with a preferential alignment of particles achieved via externally imposed deterministic driving forces. The sharp transition from non-conducting to conducting of the composite film is successfully revealed with the model. The percolation behavior is studied in terms of four percolation parameters, including the percolation probability, the normalized shortest percolation path, normalized gyration radius and density of the percolation cluster, subject to variation in five important system parameters. These include particle concentration, relative importance of the externally applied force, film thickness, film width and particle size. The threshold particle concentration can be reduced by increasing the strength of the deterministic driving force, decreasing film thickness, increasing film width or using smaller size particles. Our study suggests that using stronger applied force for wider and thinner films containing smaller particles may be a good practice to obtain anisotropically conductive films with a light particle loading that possess good conduction capability in the thickness direction and good insulation in the planar direction. A simple Kronig-Penney model for 1D mesoscopic systems with δ peak potentials is used to study numerically the influence of spatial disorder on conductance fluctuations and distribution at different regimes. The Lévy laws are used to investigate the statistical properties of the eigenstates. It is found that an Anderson transition occurs even in 1D meaning that the disorder can also provide constructive quantum interferences. The critical disorder Wc for this transition is estimated. In these 1D systems, the metallic phase is well characterized by a Gaussian conductance distribution. Indeed, the results relative to conductance distribution are in good agreement with the previous works in 2D and 3D systems for other models. At this transition, the conductance probability distribution has a system size independent shape with large fluctuations in good agreement with previous works.  相似文献

We study the influence of boundary conditions on the finite-size corrections of a one-dimensional (1D) quantum spin model by exact and perturbative theoretic calculations. We obtain two new infinite sets of universal amplitude ratios for the finite-size correction terms of the 1D quantum spin model of N sites with free and antiperiodic boundary conditions. The results for the lowest two orders are in perfect agreement with a perturbative conformal field theory scenario proposed by Cardy [J. Cardy, Nucl. Phys. B 270 (1986) 186].  相似文献

Scaling theory predicts complete localization in d = 2 in quantum systems belonging to the orthogonal class(i.e., with timereversal symmetry and spin-rotation symmetry). The conductance g behaves as g^exp(-L/l) with system size L and localization length l in the strong disorder limit. However, classical systems can always have metallic states in which Ohm’s law shows a constant g in d=2. We study a two-dimensional quantum percolation model by controlling dephasing effects. The numerical investigation of g aims at simulating a quantum-to-classical percolation evolution. An unexpected metallic phase, where g increases with L, generates immense interest before the system becomes completely classical. Furthermore, the analysis of the scaling plot of g indicates a metal-insulator crossover.  相似文献

We analyze the localization of quantum walks on a one-dimensional finite graph using vector-distance. We first vectorize the probability distribution of a quantum walker in each node. Then we compute out the probability distribution vectors of quantum walks in infinite and finite graphs in the presence of static disorder respectively, and get the distance between these two vectors. We find that when the steps taken are small and the boundary condition is tight, the localization between the infinite and finite cases is greatly different. However, the difference is negligible when the steps taken are large or the boundary condition is loose. It means quantum walks on a one-dimensional finite graph may also suffer from localization in the presence of static disorder. Our approach and results can be generalized to analyze the localization of quantum walks in higher-dimensional cases.  相似文献

The interplay of geometric randomness and strong quantum fluctuations is an exciting topic in quantum many-body physics, leading to the emergence of novel quantum phases in strongly correlated electron systems. Recent investigations have focused on the case of homogeneous site and bond dilution in the quantum antiferromagnet on the square lattice, reporting a classical geometric percolation transition between magnetic order and disorder. In this study we show how inhomogeneous bond dilution leads to percolative quantum phase transitions, which we have studied extensively by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Quantum percolation introduces a new class of two-dimensional spin liquids, characterized by an infinite percolating network with vanishing antiferromagnetic order parameter.  相似文献

Ground-state magnetic properties of the diluted Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice are investigated by means of the quantum Monte Carlo method with the continuous-time loop algorithm. It is found that the critical concentration of magnetic sites is independent of the spin size S, and equal to the two-dimensional percolation threshold. However, the existence of quantum fluctuations makes the critical exponents deviate from those of the classical percolation transition. Furthermore, we found that the transition is not universal, i.e., the critical exponents significantly depend on S.  相似文献

Spin chains are promising candidates for quantum communication and computation. Using quantum optimal control (OC) theory based on the Krotov method, we present a protocol to perform quantum state transfer with fast and high fidelity by only manipulating the boundary spins in a quantum spin-1/2 chain. The achieved speed is about one order of magnitude faster than that is possible in the Lyapunov control case for comparable fidelities. Additionally, it has a fundamental limit for OC beyond which optimization is not possible. The controls are exerted only on the couplings between the boundary spins and their neighbors, so that the scheme has good scalability. We also demonstrate that the resulting OC scheme is robust against disorder in the chain.  相似文献
