The growth behavior of Ca on Si(0 0 1) has been studied with scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction. During the growth of the first atomic layer at elevated temperature, Ca induces several different ordered surface reconstructions. In order of ascending metal content, they are: a 2 × n (n = 3, 4, 5) phase that has limited long range order, a 2 × 6 striped phase, and a 1 × 3 phase. The 1 × 3 phase covers the entire surface at and beyond the point where Ca silicide island growth starts.  相似文献

Electronic and atomic structures of different terminations of the (0 0 1) non-polar orientation of BaZrO3 surfaces have been studied using first-principles calculations. We found that surface energies at both possible surface terminations, BaO and ZrO2, were very close. The (0 0 1)-BaO and (0 0 1)-ZrO2 terminated surfaces have bandgap values smaller than that of a bulk BaZrO3 crystal. In addition, the relative surface stability has been analyzed as a function of chemical environment.  相似文献

The abstraction of chemisorbed hydrogen on Si(1 0 0) and Si(1 1 1) induced by atomic hydrogen has been investigated by studying with a rotatable mass spectrometer the angle-resolved molecular hydrogen desorption from a Si surface exposed to a chopped beam of atomic hydrogen. The angular distributions of desorbing molecules can be fitted independent of the surface temperature and the surface reconstruction by a cosnθ function with n < 1 for Si(1 0 0) and Si(1 1 1). These results are interpreted by non-activated pathways involving site-specific hot-atom abstraction on two adjacent silicon atoms with one having a dangling bond. Possible mechanisms according to the surface reconstructions are discussed.  相似文献

Under GGA, the structural, electronic properties and stabilities of four different (1 × 1) terminations of cubic PbTiO3 (1 1 1) surface, the directly cleaved (1 1 1)-Ti and (1 1 1)-PbO3 terminations and the constructed (1 1 1)-TiO and (1 1 1)-PbO2 ones, have been systematically studied by using projector-augmented wave method implemented in VASP. For (1 1 1)-Ti and (1 1 1)-PbO3 terminations, Ti-O bonds between the outermost two layers are enhanced after relaxation, while those between the second and the third layers are weakened. In addition, a contraction of O-O distance in surface PbO3 layer is also found for (1 1 1)-PbO3 termination. Moreover, electronic structures of both (1 1 1)-Ti and (1 1 1)-PbO2 terminations are significantly influenced by structure relaxations, and the effects of the surface on the DOS are dominantly on the Ti layers, especially the CB. For a constructed (1 1 1)-TiO termination, the relaxation results show both Ti-O bonds between the outermost two layers and those between the second PbO3 layer and the third Ti layers are enhanced. For a constructed (1 1 1)-PbO2 termination, Ti-O bonds between the outermost two layers are also enhanced as in the (1 1 1)-TiO termination, however, inequivalent Ti-O bonds between the second layer Ti atom and the third layer O atoms are found, with two bonds expanding and the other one contracting. Results of electronic structure calculations show these two constructed terminations are all insulating and changes of DOS originate dominantly from modifications of surface compositions. Furthermore, it is found that for all four different (1 1 1) terminations, the movements of the cation and/or anion on the outermost layer along the surface normal direction after relaxation all result in a reduction of the space electric field. In O and Pb external environments, it is predicted that (1 1 1)-PbO2 termination is the most stable one in O- and Pb-rich environments, however, the (1 1 1)-Ti termination is stable one in O- and Pb-poor conditions. The (1 1 1)-TiO termination also shows a stability domain in moderate O and Pb environments.  相似文献

We have performed the structural and statistical analysis of Yb/Si(1 1 1) and Eu/Si(1 1 1) surfaces in the submonolayer regime utilizing low-energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The almost identical series of one-dimensional chain structures (e.g., 3 × 2/3 × 1, 5 × 1, 7 × 1, 9 × 1, and 2 × 1 phases) are found in order of increasing metal coverage for both adsorbed systems, however, only the Eu/Si system reveals the ‘√3’-like reconstruction before the 2 × 1 endpoint phase. The atomic models of chain structures are proposed and discussed. In particular, our results suggest the odd-order n×1 (n=5,7,9,…) intermediate reconstructions to incorporate the Seiwatz chains and honeycomb chains with the proportion of m:1, where . The statistical analysis of STM images is carried out to examine the correlation of atomic rows on Eu/Si and Yb/Si surfaces. It is found that Eu stabilizes more ordered row configuration compared to Yb, which can be explained in terms of indirect electronic interaction of atomic chains or/and different magnetic properties of adsorbed species.  相似文献

ZrB2(0 0 0 1) crystals grown by the rf-floating zone technique were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, reflection high-energy electron diffraction, and atomic force microscopy. These characteristics were investigated as a function of thermal cleaning temperature up to 1000 °C in vacuum for as-received substrates as well as substrates treated ex situ in HF aqueous solution. The HF treatment process removed the ZrO2 native oxide layer present on as-received substrates and resulted in ZrB2(0 0 0 1) surfaces exhibiting long-range order. Upon annealing the HF-treated surface in high vacuum, two types of reconstructions were observed: an incommensurate reconstruction from 650 to 900 °C related to residual H2 gas, and n × n reconstructions at 1000 °C, possibly related to oxygen.  相似文献

The results of first-principles calculations about the two possible terminations of (0 0 1) surface of SrTiO3 perovskite and adsorption of NO on SrTiO3 (0 0 1) surface were presented. Both surface parameters (atomic structures and electronic configurations) and adsorption parameters (bond, energy and charge) of NO on SrTiO3 (0 0 1) surface, which have never been investigated before as far as we know were investigated using density functional theory calculations with the local-density approximation (DFT-LDA). It was found that the two possible terminations of SrTiO3 (0 0 1) surface have large surface relaxation, which leads to surface polarization and exhibits different reactivity toward the dissociative adsorption of NO. The electronic states of TiO2-terminated surface have larger difference than that of bulk, so it is more favorable for adsorption of NO than SrO-terminated surface.  相似文献

A soft X-ray appearance potential spectroscopy (SXAPS) apparatus with high sensitivity was built to measure non-derivative spectra. SXAPS spectra (non-derivative) of Ti 2p and O 1s for TiO2(1 1 0)-1 × 2 and (0 0 1)-1 × 1 surfaces have been measured using low incident currents (about 10 μA/cm2) and a photon counting mode. Density of empty states on Ti and O sites are deduced by self-deconvoluting the spectra. The self-deconvoluted SXAPS spectra are qualitatively similar to those measured by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Ti 2p3/2 spectrum shows two strong peaks which correspond to t2g and eg states. For the O 1s spectrum two strong peaks near the threshold are also found which can be ascribed to O 2pπ and O 2pσ states. These results suggest that the spectra almost obey the dipole selection rule, so-called the “approximate dipole selection rule”. The SXAPS spectra of Ti 2p and O 1s for the (1 1 0) and (0 0 1) surfaces resemble qualitatively, which is consistent with the XAS results. The spectra measured on the (1 1 0)-1 × 2 surface at an incident angle of 45° off normal to the surface and on the (1 1 0) surface sputtered by Ar ions indicate that SXAPS is very sensitive to the surface electronic states.  相似文献

The effect of ferroelectric poling direction on the structure and electronic properties of the LiNbO3 (0 0 0 1) surface was characterized. Low energy and reflection high energy electron diffraction indicated that both the positively and negatively poled surfaces were (1 × 1) with no evidence of longer range periodic reconstructions. Low energy ion scattering spectra from both surfaces were dominated by scattering from oxygen atoms. X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectra also showed little difference between the positively and negatively poled surfaces, with the exception of a high binding energy shoulder on the O 1s core level of the negative surface. Exposure of the surfaces to atomic hydrogen caused reduction of the surface Nb rather than an increase in intensity on the high binding energy side of the O 1s peak, indicating that the shoulder on the O 1s peak on the negative surface was not due to surface hydroxyl groups. Temperature programmed desorption measurements indicated that the nearly stoichiometric LiNbO3 samples were susceptible to loss of Li2O starting at temperatures as low as 500 K, independent of the poling direction. An adatom/vacancy model is proposed in which oxygen ad-anions accumulate on one side of the crystal while oxygen anion vacancies are created on the opposite surface. This model can explain the apparent oxygen termination of both surfaces and the observed (1 × 1) periodicity of the surfaces, and also effectively screens the thickness dependent electric field associated with the polar orientation of the crystal.  相似文献

The interactions of H and H2 with W(1 0 0)-c(2 × 2)Cu and W(1 0 0) have been investigated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations to elucidate the effect of Cu atoms on the reactivity of the alloy. Cu atoms do not alter the attraction towards top-W sites felt by H2 molecules approaching the W(1 0 0) surface but make dissociation more difficult due to the rise of late activation barriers. This is mainly due to the strong decrease in the stability of the atomic adsorbed state on bridge sites, the most favourable ones for H adsorption on W(1 0 0). Still, our results show unambiguously that H2 dissociative adsorption on perfect terraces of the W(1 0 0)-c(2 × 2)Cu surface is a non-activated process which is consistent with the high sticking probability found in molecular beam experiments at low energies.  相似文献

We present a reflectance difference spectroscopy (RDS) study of para-sexiphenyl (p-6P) thin film growth on Cu(1 1 0) and Cu(1 1 0)-(2 × 1)O substrates. The RDS spectra show pronounced anisotropies for p-6P films formed on both substrates at room temperature, demonstrating that the molecules are uniaxially aligned within the films. Based on the RD spectra and the evolution of the optical transitions with p-6P coverage the growth mode on both substrates could be identified. From the dominating RDS feature, assigned to the lowest energy HOMO-LUMO transition, the orientation of the molecular chain can be determined. On Cu(1 1 0), the p-6P molecular chains align in the direction, i.e., along the Cu atomic rows, whereas on the Cu(1 1 0)-(2 × 1)O surface, the molecules are oriented in the orthogonal [0 0 1] direction, i.e., along the “added” Cu-O rows of the Cu(1 1 0)-(2 × 1)O surface. The energetic position and line shape of the main RDS feature differs for the two substrates and varies with p-6P coverage. This fine structure is discussed in terms of different molecular conformations, adlayer structure and vibronic replicas.  相似文献

The results of a theoretical study on the stability of fcc (1 1 1) metal surfaces to certain commensurate-incommensurate reconstructive phase transformations is presented. Specifically, we have performed computer simulation studies of the 22×√3 surface reconstruction of Au(1 1 1). This reconstruction involves a uniaxial contraction of the top monolayer corresponding to a surface strain of about 4.3% and has been observed to be the stable structure for the clean surface at low temperatures. The driving force for the reconstruction has been associated with the quantity (fγ), where f is the surface stress and γ is the surface free energy, while the opposing force is due to the disregistry with the underlying lattice. A continuum model yields a stability criterion that depends on the knowledge of a small number of physical quantities: f, γ, the equilibrium nearest-neighbor spacing r1 and the shear modulus G. We have performed molecular dynamics simulations as a general stability analysis of these types of reconstructions. The results are in excellent agreement with the continuum model. The simulations using embedded-atom method potentials also accurately reproduce many observed features of the reconstruction on Au(1 1 1).  相似文献

The adsorption of molecular oxygen on the c(2 × 8) reconstruction of quenched Si(1 1 1) surfaces has been studied at the atomic scale using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at room temperature (RT). It has been found that clean well reconstructed c(2 × 8) adatoms do not react with O2 molecules but that a limited oxidation can start where adatom sites arranged in reconstructed structures are present. Comparison between O2 adsorption on Si(1 1 1)-c(2 × 8) and Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 reconstructions coexisting on the same quenched silicon surface has been carried out in detail. For each atomic site present on the surface the variation of reacted sites with exposure has been measured. For low O2 exposures, bright and dark oxygen induced sites appear on the Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7, while Si(1 1 1)-c(2 × 8) does not oxidized at all. At high O2 exposures, large oxidation areas have spread on the 7 × 7 reconstruction, preferentially on the faulted halves of the unit cell, and smaller oxidation areas induced by topological defects have grown all around clean un-reacted c(2 × 8) regions.  相似文献

The adsorption of S2 on the Si(1 1 1)-(7 × 7) surface and the interaction of copper and sulfur on this sulfur-terminated Si(1 1 1) surface have been studied using synchrotron irradiation photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. The adsorption of S2 at room temperature results in the passivation of silicon dangling bonds of Si(1 1 1)-(7 × 7) surface. Excessive sulfur forms Sn species on the surface. Copper atoms deposited at room temperature directly interact with S-adatoms through the formations of Cu-S bonds. Upon annealing the sample at 300 °C, CuSx nanocrystals were produced on the sulfur-terminated Si(1 1 1) surface.  相似文献

First-principles calculations were performed to study the properties of O adsorption on Ni3Al (0 0 1), (0 1 1), and (1 1 1) surfaces using the Cambridge serial total package (CASTEP) code. Stable adsorption sites are identified. The atomic and electronic structures and adsorption energies are predicted. The adsorption sites for O on the Ni3Al (0 0 1) surface are at the 2Ni–2Al fourfold hollow site, whereas O prefers to adsorb at the Ni–Al bridge site on (0 1 1) surface and 2Ni–Al threefold hollow site on (1 1 1) surface. It is found that O shows the strongest affinity for Al and the state of O is the most stabilized when O adsorbs on (0 0 1) surface, while the affinity of O for Al on (0 1 1) surface is weaker than (0 0 1) surface, and (1 1 1) surface is the weakest. The stronger O and Al affinity indicates more stable Al2O3 when oxidized. The experiment has shown that the oxidation resistance of single crystal superalloy in different orientations improves in the order of (1 1 1), (0 1 1), and (0 0 1) surface, suggesting that the oxidation in different crystallographic orientations may be related to the affinity of O for Al in the surface.  相似文献

We use first-principles density functional theory-based calculations in the analysis of the interaction of H2O with (1 0 0), (1 1 0) and (1 1 1) surfaces of TiN, and develop understanding in terms of surface energies, polarity of the surface and chemistry of the cation, through comparison with H2O adsorption on ZrN. While water molecule physisorbs preferentially at Ti site of (1 0 0) and (1 1 1) surfaces, it adsorbs dissociatively on (1 1 0) surface of TiN with binding stronger than almost 1.32 eV/molecule. Our analysis reveals the following general trends: (a) surfaces with higher energies typically lead to stronger adsorption, (b) dissociative adsorption of H2O necessarily occurs on a charge neutral high energy surface and (c) lower symmetry of the (1 1 0) plane results in many configurations of comparable stability, as opposed to the higher symmetry (1 0 0) and (1 1 1) surfaces, which also consistently explain the results of H2O adsorption on MgO available in literature. Finally, weaker adsorption of H2O on TiN than on ZrN can be rationalized in terms of greater chemical stability of Ti arising from its ability to be in mixed valence.  相似文献

We have employed the pseudopotential method and the density functional scheme to study the atomic geometry and electronic states of the GaSb(0 0 1) surface such as (1 × 3), c(2 × 6) and (4 × 3) reconstructions. It is found that both of (1 × 3) and c(2 × 6) reconstructions are characterised by metallic band structures, and thus violate the so-called electron counting rule, one of the main building principles of the stability of compound semiconductor surfaces. We establish that the stability of these reconstructions results from significant elastic deformation in the top atomic layers of the surface, a process which overcomes the penality incurred by the violation of the electron counting rule. The atomic geometry and electronic states for the two reconstructions are compared and contrasted with each other. The α and β phases of the (4 × 3) reconstruction also show large atomic relaxations but are semiconducting and obey the electron counting rule.  相似文献

Chemisorbed O and water react on Pd(1 1 1) at low temperatures to form a mixed OH/H2O layer with a (√3 × √3)R30° registry. Reaction requires at least two water molecules to each O before the (2 × 2)O islands are consumed, the most stable OH/water structure being a (OH + H2O) layer containing 0.67 ML of oxygen, formed by the reaction 3H2O + O → 2(H2O + OH). This structure is stabilised compared to pure water structures, decomposing at 190 K as OH recombines and water desorbs. The (√3 × √3)R30° − (OH + H2O) phase cannot be formed by O/H reaction and is distinct from the (√3 × √3)R30° structure formed by O/H coadsorption below 200 K. Mixed OH/water structures do not react with coadsorbed H below 190 K on Pd(1 1 1), preventing this phase catalyzing the low temperature H2/O2 reaction which only occurs at higher temperatures.  相似文献

Studies of strain-induced changes in surface properties of metal/alloy surface have long been concerned by lot of scientists. However, the strain effects on the work function (WF), and in particular, its physical mechanism have not been well understood. In this paper, we employed a first-principles method to study the effects of biaxial strain in WF on the (0 0 1), (1 1 0) and (1 1 1) surfaces of AlCu3. The relationship among the WF change, atomic relaxation and charge transfer induced by strain was discussed. The calculated results showed that tensile strain decreased the WF, while the compressive strain increased the WF; a larger atomic relaxation often followed with a larger WF change. The sensitivity of the WF with respect to the strain was strongly dependent on the direction of the surface or the density of atom packed plane of the surface.  相似文献

The oxidation of the W(1 0 0) surface at elevated temperatures has been studied using room temperature STM and LEED. High exposure of the clean surface to O2 at 1500 K followed by flash-annealing to 2300 K in UHV results in the formation of a novel p(3 × 1) reconstruction, which is imaged by STM as a missing-row structure on the surface. Upon further annealing in UHV, this surface develops a floreted LEED pattern characteristic of twinned microdomains of monoclinic WOx, while maintaining the p(3 × 1) missing-row structure. Atomically resolved STM images of this surface show a complex domain structure with single and double W〈0 1 0〉 rows coexisting on the surface in different domains.  相似文献
