1.  Transmission characteristics of an excited-state induced dispersion optical filter of rubidium at 775.9 nm

   The operation of an ultra-narrow bandwidth optical filter based on the 5P3/2→5D3/2 excited-state transition in rubidium vapor is reported. The 5D3/2 state is excited by a circularly polarized pump beam at 780 nm from a diode laser. The filter displays a single 398-MHz bandwidth at a peak transmission of 9.0%, which is narrower than the Doppler bandwidth. The dependence of peak transmission on the pump intensity and cell temperature is also given.    

2.  Ultra-narrow bandwidth optical filters consisting of one-dimensional photonic crystals with anomalous dispersion materials

   We present a new type of optical filter with an ultra-narrow bandwidth and a wide field-of-view (FOV). This kind of optical filter consists of one-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) incorporating an anomalous-dispersion-material (ADM) with, for instance, an anomalous dispersion of 6P3/2←6S1/2 hyperfine structure transition of a caesium atom. The transmission spectra of optical filters are calculated by using the transfer-matrix method. The simulation results show that the designed optical filter has a bandwidth narrower than 0.33GHz and a wide FOV of ±30°as well. The response of transmission spectrum to an external magnetic field is also investigated.    

3.  The Inversionless Amplification in a Tripod System of SrRb Atoms in a Magneto-optical Trap

   The probe transmission spectra around the atomic transition 52S1/2,F = 2 → 52P3/2,F = 2 of 87Rb are measured in a magneto-optical trap by adding a coupling field around the atomic transition 52S1/2, F = 2 → 52 P3/2, F1 = 2. The inversionless amplification is observed in the spectrum over the atomic transition 5 2 S1/2, F = 2 → 52pa/2, Fr = 2. The tripod eleetromagnetically induced transparency is proposed to account for the ampli- fication feature, in which population distributions among these related atomic levels play an important role.    

4.  Ultranarrow bandwidth tunable atomic filter via quantum interference-induced polarization rotation in Rb vapor

   We report the experimental demonstration of an ultranarrow bandwidth atomic filter by optically induced polarization rotation in multilevel electromagnetically induced transparency systems in hot Rb vapor. With a coupling intensity of 2.3 W/cm^2, the filter shows a peak transmission of 33.2% and a bandwidth of 10 MHz. By altering the coupling frequency, a broad tuning range of several Doppler linewidths of the D1 line transitions of STRb atoms can be obtained. The presented atomic filter has useful features of ultranarrow bandwidth, and the operating frequency can be tuned resonance with the atomic transition. Such narrowband tunable atomic filter can be used as an efficient noise rejection tool in classical and quantum optical applications.    

5.  Laser 728 nm Spectroscopy of Electrodeless Discharge Rb Lamp

   The electrodeless discharge rubidium vapor lamp plays a key role in a number of applications, such as atomic clock, atomic magnetometer, atomic optical filter and laser frequency stabilization. The electrodeless discharge Rb vapor lamp has rich spectra, including 420nm, 421nm, 565nm, 572nm, 607nm, 616nm, 728 nm, 776 nm, 780 nm, 795 nm, 1324 nm, 1344 nm, 1366 nm, 1475 nm, 1529 nm spectroscopy, etc. The 780nm transition wavelength between 5P3/2 and 5S1/2 of Rb atoms is usually used in fields of the Rb atomic clock and the Rb atomic magnetometer.With the 421.7 nm laser pumping atoms from 5S1/2 to 6P1/2, 1366.9 nm transition from 6S1/2 to 5P3/2 can be used as a clock transition of Rb four levels for an atomic active optical clock. An active optical clock is a new conception of the atomic clock and has the potential to improve the stabil- ity of the best atomic clocks by about two orders of magnitude. Another application of the elec- trodeless discharge Rb vapor lamp is the Rb Faraday anomalous-dispersion optical filter (FADOF) (e.g., 776 nm] and 1529 nm spectroscopy), in which the electrodeless discharge Rb vapor lamp is more feasible than the one using a laser pumped Rb vapor cell in some cases, since many excited states are populated enough for aimed FADOF transition. Although the rich spectra of Rb have many applications, so far no detailed investigations or applications have been achieved in 728.0nm transition. To the best of our knowledge, the Rb 728.0 nm spectral data are currently only from the fluorescence by Beacham arc spectrum of rubidium early in 1959.    

6.  Narrowband switchable dual-passband atomic filter with four-wave mixing optical amplification

   By using Faraday optical filter combined with four-wave mixing (FWM) amplifier, a narrow bandwidth optical amplifying atomic filter with switchable dual-passband is demonstrated experimentally. The two transmission peaks of the filter correspond to the Stokes and anti-Stokes frequencies, exhibiting a Raman gain in 13- and 17-fold, respectively, with bandwidth of ~120 MHz. By properly setting pump laser detuning, switching between filter passbands is realized. We also investigate the dependence of peak transmission on both pump laser intensity and Rb cell temperature. This atomic filter can find practical applications in long-distance laser communications and laser remote-sensing systems.    

7.  Filter Performance of a Cesium Faraday Optical Filter at 852nm

   We have investigated a cesium Faraday filter at 852nm in relatively weak and strong magnetic fields,theoretically and experimentally.with a cesium cell of 0.02m length in an axial magnetic field of 0.06T,the line-centre operation has been achieved.The calculated peak transmission reached 99% with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) bandwidth of only 3.9GHz.The measured FWHM bandwidth of the filter is 3.29GHz,which is in general agreement with the theoretical result.    

8.  Determination of hyperfine structure constants of 5D_(5/2) and 7S_(1/2) states of rubidium in cascade atomic system

   We present a method to precisely determine the hyperfine structure constants of the rubidium 5D_(5/2) and 7S_(1/2) states in a cascade atomic system. The probe laser is coupled to the 5S_(1/2)→ 5P_(3/2) hyperfine transition, while the coupling laser is scanned over the 5P_(3/2)→ 5D_(5/2)(7S_(1/2)) transition. The high-resolution double-resonance optical pumping spectra are obtained with two counter-propagating laser beams acting on rubidium vapor. The hyperfine splitting structures are accurately measured by an optical frequency ruler based on the acousto-optic modulator, thus, the magnetic dipole hyperfine coupling constant A and quadrupole coupling constant B are determined. It is of great significance for the atomic hyperfine structure and fundamental physics research.    

9.  Self-rotation of optical polarization in rubidium vapor

   We present an experimental and theoretical study of self-rotation of optical polarization in a rubidium vapor.The atomic vapor is placed in a magnetic shielding cavity to suppress the Faraday rotation effect.In our experiment,Doppler-free spectroscopy configuration is used,and F = 2 → F ’ = 3 transition of 87Rb D2 line is chosen.We observe self-rotation of optical polarization effect at different pump light ellipticities.A theoretical analysis is then provided based on the experimental conditions.Theoretical simulation and experimental results are in good agreement.    

10.  Novel 64×2.5 Gb/s all-optical OFDM symbol generator based on triangle waveform driving-LiNbO_3 modulators

   We propose a novel and simple all-optical 160-Gb/s orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) symbol generator which is based on discrete triangle waveform driving-LiNbO_3 modulators to realize large-range linear optical shift.The entire system needs 64 discrete modulators:at the transmitter,a 2.5-Gb/s optical duobinary(ODB) modulator for data modulation and a 2.5-Gb/s triangle waveform driving-LiNbO_3 phase modulator for phase shift to generate each subcarrier;and at the receiver,a 2.5-GHz optical band pass filter(OBPF) using Faraday anomalous dispersion optical effect to separate them.Excellent bit error rate(BER) is observed after 1060 km of transmission without any dispersion compensation.    

11.  Study of a narrowband reflection filter with multi-channels

   Reflection filters have various applications in optical communication and other systems.In this letter,we propose a narrowband high-reflection filter composed of dielectric and metallic layers,in which an optimized filter combined with an admittance-matching layer with broad stop band is achieved.The structure can be expressed as Sub | (HL)13H2L(HL)313Cr0.84H | air,with full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) bandwidth of 2.5 nm.Based on this structure,reflection filters with multi-peaks are presented,and the law of distribution of peak positions is drawn.    

12.  Energy-Pooling Collisions in Rubidium: 5P3/2 + 5P3/2 → 5S + (nl = 5D, 7S)  被引次数:2

   We experimentally study rubidium energy pooling collisions of Rb(SP3/2) + Rb(5P3/2) → Rb(5S1/2) + Rb (nlJ = 5DJ, 7S1/2) at low densities in a cell using diode laser excitation. The excited-atom density and spatial distribution are mapped by monitoring the absorption of a counterpropagating single-mode diode laser beam, tuned to the 5P3/2 → 7S1/2 transition, which could be translated parallel to the pump beam. The excited atom densities are combined with measured fluorescence ratios to determine cross sections for the rubidium energy pooling process. The cross sections for nlJ being 5D5/2, 5D3/2, and 7S1/2 are (1.32±0.59)×10^-14, (1.18±0.53)×10^-14 and (3.21±1.44)×10^-15cm^2, respectively.    

13.  Phase grating in a doubly degenerate four-level system

   In this paper, we suggest a doubly degenerate four-level system, in which the transition takes place between the hyperfine energy 52S1/2 F = 1 and 52P3/2 F = 2 in rubidium 87 D2 line, for studying atomic phase grating based on the cross-Kerr and phase conjugation effects. The phase grating with high efficiency can be obtained by tuning phase shift Ф between the coupling and probe field, when the coupling intensity is much stronger than the strength of probe field. Under different coupling intensities, a high diffraction efficiency can be maintained. A new and simple way of implementing phase grating is presented. However, in such an atomic system, two main limitations must be taken into account. First, the independence between steady state probe susceptibility and the coupling intensity, when the population decay rate is larger than the Rabi frequency of the coupling field, cannot result in diffraction grating; second, the sample to be prepared should not be too long.    

14.  200 Mb/s visible optical wireless transmission based on NRZ–OOK modulation of phosphorescent white LED and a pre-emphasis circuit  被引次数:1

   We present a high-speed visible light communication (VLC) link that uses a commercially available phos- phorescent white light-emitting diode (LED). Such devices have few megahertz bandwidth due to the slow response of phosphorescent component, which severely limit the transmission data rate of VLC system. We propose a simple pre-emphasis circuit. With blue-filtering and the pre-emphasis circuit, the bandwidth of VLC system can be enhanced from 3 to 77.6 MHz, which allows non-return-to-zero on-off-keying (NRZ- OOK) data transmission up to 200 Mb/s with the bit error ratio of 5.3 × 10-7 which is below 10-6. The VLC link operates at the room illumination level of -1000 lx at 1.1 m range using a single 1 W white LED.    

15.  Off-resonant double-resonance optical-pumping spectra and their application in a multiphoton cesium magneto-optical trap

   We present an investigation of double-resonance optical pumping(DROP) spectra under the condition of singlephoton frequency detuning based on a cesium 6S1/2–6P3/2–8S1/2ladder-type system with a room-temperature vapor cell.Two DROP peaks are found, and their origins are explored. One peak has a narrow linewidth due to the atomic coherence for a counterpropagating configuration; the other peak has a broad linewidth, owing to the spontaneous decay for a copropagating configuration. This kind of off-resonant DROP spectrum can be used to control and offset-lock a laser frequency to a transition between excited states. We apply this technique to a multiphoton cesium magneto-optical trap, which can efficiently trap atoms on both red and blue sides of the two-photon resonance.    

16.  Tunable All-Optical Filtering and Buffering in a Coupled Quantum Dot-Planar Photonic Crystal Structure

   We theoretically investigate controlled tunable all-optical filtering and buffering of optical pulses in a hybrid nano-photonic structure, where a single quantum dot (QD) embedded in a photonic crystal nanocavity is sidecoupled between a bare nanocavity and a photonic crystal waveguide. We demonstrate that there is a sharp low-loss transmission peak in the transmission spectrum under even low QD-nanocavity coupling strength and the input optical pulses can be delayed up to several hundred picoseconds within the dephasing time of the QD. The filtering regime can be shifted readily by manipulating the detuning between the QD excitonic transition frequency and resonant frequency of the nanocavity mode, which can be explored in future for on-chip all-optical logic and signal processing.    

17.  Observation of Modulation Transfer Spectroscopy in the Deep Modulation Regime

   We observe the modulation transfer spectroscopy on the D2 line of ^87Rb in a rubidium cell with acoustic-optic modulator in the deep modulation regime. In this regime, the sidebands of the pump beam are involved in the four-wave mixing processes, which increase the signal gradients and the peak-to-peak amplitudes of both the absorption and dispersion components.    

18.  Effect of four-wave mixing on electromagnetically induced transparency in Λ-type system with a two-photon probe field

   Using density matrix equation, we calculate analytically as well as numerically the effect of the four-wave mixing (FWM) field on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the rubidium 5S_{1/2}-5P_{3/2}-5D_{5/2} Λ-type system with a two-photon probe field. The calculated results are in good agreement with Fulton's experimental results in 1995 Phys. Rev. A 52 2302.    

19.  Experimental Determination of the Landé g-Factors for 5s~2 ~1S and 5s5p ~3P States of the ~(87)Sr Atom

   We present an experimental determination on the Lande g-factors for the 5 s~2 ~1 S_0 and 5 s5 p ~3 P_0 states in ultra-cold atomic systems, which is important for evaluating the Zeeman shift of the clock transition in the ~(87)Sr optical lattice clock. The Zeeman shift of the 5 s5 p ~3 P_0-5 s~2 ~1 S_0 forbidden transition is measured with the π-polarized andσ~±-polarized interrogations at different magnetic field strengths. Moreover, in the g-factor measurement with the σ~±-transition spectra, it is unnecessary to calibrate the external magnetic field. By this means, the ground state 5 s~2 ~1 S_0 g-factor for the ~(87)Sr atom is-1.306(52) ×10~(-4), which is the first experimental determination to the best of our knowledge, and the result matches very well with the theoretical estimation. The differential g-factorδg between the 5 s5 p~3 P_0 state and the 5 s~2 ~1 S_0 state of the ~(87)Sr atoms is measured in the experiment as well,which are-7.67(36) ×10~(-5) with π-transition spectra and-7.72(43) X 10-5 with σ~±-transition spectra, in good agreement with the previous report [Phys. Rev. A 76(2007) 022510]. This work can also be used for determining the differential g-factor of the clock states for the optical clocks based on other atoms.    

20.  High-Order Ultrawideband Pulse Generation from NRZ-DPSK Signals

   A simple method to generate ultrawideband (UWB) doublet and triplet from nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) differential phase shift keying (DPSK) signals is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The proposed configuration consists of a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) to generate NRZ-DPSK signals, a section of single-mode fibre to form a microwave bandpass filter, which is used to generate doublet pulses, and a Gaussian optical bandpass filter (OBF), which serves as a frequency discriminator to generate higher-order UWB pulses. A pair of polarity- reversed triplet pulses is achieved by locating the optical carrier at the positive and negative linear Mopes of the OBF, where the OBF detuning is 0.12nm and -0.2 nm, respectively. The spectra of the pair of UWB triplets have a central frequency of 5 GHz and 5.6 GHz, and have a -10 dB bandwidth of 6.9 GHz and 8.1 GHz, respectively. The UWB pulses remain doublet shape when the light wavelength is located at the peak of the OBF. The spectrum of the doublet has a central frequency of 5.6 GHz and a -10 dB bandwidth of 6.9 GHz.
