We study an analytically tractable model with long-range interactions for which an out-of-equilibrium very long-lived coherent structure spontaneously appears. The dynamics of this model is indeed very peculiar: a bicluster forms at low energy and is stable for very long time, contrary to statistical mechanics predictions. We first explain the onset of the structure, by approximating the short time dynamics with a forced Burgers equation. The emergence of the bicluster is the signature of the shock waves present in the associated hydrodynamical equations. The striking quantitative agreement with the dynamics of the particles fully confirms this procedure. We then show that a very fast timescale can be singled out from a slower motion. This enables us to use an adiabatic approximation to derive an effective Hamiltonian that describes very well the long time dynamics. We then get an explanation of the very long time stability of the bicluster: this out-of-equilibrium state corresponds to a statistical equilibrium of an effective mean-field dynamics. Pauli exclusion between the carriers of N excitons induces novel many-body effects, quite different from the ones generated by Coulomb interaction. Using our commutation technique for interacting close-to-boson particles, we here calculate the Hamiltonian expectation value in the N-ground-state-exciton state. Coulomb interaction enters this quantity at first order only by construction; nevertheless, due to Pauli exclusion, subtle many-body effects take place, which give rise to terms in (Na x 3/)n with n ≥ 2. An exact procedure to get these density dependent terms is given. Three-dimensional motion of a slender vortex tube, embedded in an inviscid incompressible fluid, is investigated under the localized induction approximation for the Euler equations. Using the method of matched asymptotic expansions in a small parameter ε, the ratio of core radius to curvature radius, the velocity of a vortex filament is derived to O3), whereby the influence of elliptical deformation of the core due to the self-induced strain is taken into account. It is found that there is an integrable line in the core whose evolution obeys a summation of the first and third terms of the localized induction hierarchy. The equation of motion of twists on classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains are derived. It is shown that twists interact via position- and velocity-dependent long-range two-body forces. A quiescent regime is identified wherein the system conserves momentum. With increasing kinetic energy the system exits this regime and momentum conservation is violated due to walls annihilation. A bitwist system is shown to be integrable and its exact solution is analysed. Many-twist systems are discussed and novel periodic twist lattice solutions are found on closed chains. The stability of these solutions is discussed. Received 12 June 2002 Published online 2 October 2002 RID="a" ID="a"e-mail: rbbll@phy.cam.ac.uk  相似文献

The geometric structures, energetics and electronic properties of the recently discovered BN nanocones are investigated using first-principles calculations based on the density-functional theory. We have proposed one particular structure for BN nanocones associated with the 240° disclination, derived by the extraction of four 60° segments, presenting as characteristic four pentagons at the apex and termination in two atoms. The cones are simulated by three clusters containing 58 B plus N atoms and additional 12 H atoms to saturate the dangling bonds at the edge. The most stable configuration is obtained when the two terminating atoms are one B and one N. For the cases where the two terminating atoms are of the same kind, the tip with B atoms is determined to have lower binding energy than with N atoms. The local densities of states of these BN nanocones are investigated and sharp states are found in the regions close (below and above) to the Fermi energy. We show that the electronic states in a one-dimensional (1D) Anderson model of diagonal disorder with long-range correlation proposed by de Moura and Lyra exhibit localization-delocalization phase transition in varying the energy of electrons. Using transfer matrix method, we calculate the average resistivity and investigate how it changes with the size of the system N. For given value of α (> 2) we find critical energies Ec1 and Ec2 such that the resistivity decreases with N as a power law ∝ N - γ for electron energies within the range of [E c1, E c2], and exponentially grows with N outside this range. Such behaviors persist in approaching the transition points and the exponent γ is in the range from 0.92 to 0.96. The origin of the delocalization in this 1D model is discussed. We demonstrate the in situ detection of cold 87Rb atoms near a dielectric surface using the absorption of a weak, resonant evanescent wave. We have used this technique in time of flight experiments determining the density of atoms falling on the surface. A quantitative understanding of the measured curve was obtained using a detailed calculation of the evanescent intensity distribution. We have also used it to detect atoms trapped near the surface in a standing-wave optical dipole potential. This trap was loaded by inelastic bouncing on a strong, repulsive evanescent potential. We estimate that we trap 1.5×104 atoms at a density 100 times higher than the falling atoms. Rayleigh-Schr?dinger perturbation theory and an improved Wigner-Brillouin perturbation theory has been used to study the cyclotron resonance of the polarons in ternary mixed crystals in the zero-temperature limit. The interaction between an electron and two branches of longitudinal optical phonon modes is taken into account in the framework of the random-element-isodisplacement model. The numerical results for several ternary mixed crystals show that the polaronic cyclotron energy and mass split successively twice related to the higher and lower branches of longitudinal optical phonon modes of ternary mixed crystals. A non-linear dependence of the polaronic cyclotron energy and mass on the composition x is found. Multi-species reaction-diffusion systems, with nearest-neighbor interaction on a one-dimensional lattice are considered. Necessary and sufficient constraints on the interaction rates are obtained, that guarantee the closedness of the time evolution equation for E n(t)'s, the expectation value of the product of certain linear combination of the number operators on n consecutive sites at time t. The constraints are solved for the single-species left-right-symmetric systems. Also, examples of multi-species system for which the evolution equations of E n(t)'s are closed, are given.
