A systematic study is presented in which multilayers of different composition (W/Si, Mo/Si, Pd/B4C), periodicity (from 2.5 to 5.5 nm) and number of layers have been characterized. In particular, the intrinsic quality (roughness and reflectivity) as well as the performance (homogeneity and coherence of the outgoing beam) as a monochromator for synchrotron radiation hard X‐ray micro‐imaging are investigated. The results indicate that the material composition is the dominating factor for the performance. By helping scientists and engineers specify the design parameters of multilayer monochromators, these results can contribute to a better exploitation of the advantages of multilayer monochromators over crystal‐based devices; i.e. larger spectral bandwidth and high photon flux density, which are particularly useful for synchrotron‐based micro‐radiography and ‐tomography.  相似文献

Ru/C multilayer monochromators with different periodic thicknesses were investigated using X‐ray grazing‐incidence reflectivity, diffuse scattering, Bragg imaging, morphology testing, etc. before and after cryogenic cooling. Quantitative analyses enabled the determination of the key multilayer structural parameters for samples with different periodic thicknesses, especially the influence from the ruthenium crystallization. The results also reveal that the basic structures and reflection performance keep stable after cryogenic cooling. The low‐temperature treatment smoothed the surfaces and interfaces and changed the growth characteristic to a low‐frequency surface figure. This study helps with the understanding of the structure evolution of multilayer monochromators during cryogenic cooling and presents sufficient experimental proof for using cryogenically cooled multilayer monochromators in a high‐thermal‐load undulator beamline.  相似文献

An improved crystal design for a Bonse–Hart ultra‐small‐angle scattering instrument is presented. Defects at the diffracting surfaces of the conditioning crystals were found to be at the origin of diffuse scattering that enhances the intensity in the wings of the rocking curves by several orders of magnitude. In order to improve the performance of the instrument, the monolithic channel‐cut crystals were replaced by pairs of separate polished and deeply etched crystals. These crystals were mounted on a mechanical stage that allows very precise parallel alignment of the crystals to within a tiny fraction of the rocking curve width (sub‐µrad range). By using these double‐crystal set‐ups, the parasitic background scattering was reduced by more than an order of magnitude. The steps to achieve the optimum surface quality of the crystals as well as the precision mechanical design for their parallel alignment are described. Significant improvement of the signal‐to‐background ratio and the available wavevector range of the instrument make it suitable for studying the microstructure and dynamics of dilute and weakly scattering soft‐matter systems. This development also has potential applications in X‐ray optics such as low‐background and tunable monochromators and collimators.  相似文献

Fabrication and results of high‐resolution X‐ray topography characterization of diamond single‐crystal plates with large surface area (10 mm × 10 mm) and (111) crystal surface orientation for applications in high‐heat‐load X‐ray crystal optics are reported. The plates were fabricated by laser‐cutting of the (111) facets of diamond crystals grown using high‐pressure high‐temperature methods. The intrinsic crystal quality of a selected 3 mm × 7 mm crystal region of one of the studied samples was found to be suitable for applications in wavefront‐preserving high‐heat‐load crystal optics. Wavefront characterization was performed using sequential X‐ray diffraction topography in the pseudo plane wave configuration and data analysis using rocking‐curve topography. The variations of the rocking‐curve width and peak position measured with a spatial resolution of 13 µm × 13 µm over the selected region were found to be less than 1 µrad.  相似文献

The effect of angular vibrations of the crystals in cryogenically cooled monochromators on the beam performance has been studied theoretically and experimentally. A simple relation between amplitude of the vibrations and size of the focused beam is developed. It is shown that the double‐crystal monochromator vibrations affect not only the image size but also the image position along the optical axis. Several methods to measure vibrations with the X‐ray beam are explained and analyzed. The methods have been applied to systematically study angular crystal vibrations at monochromators installed at the PETRA III light source. Characteristic values of the amplitudes of angular vibrations for different monochromators are presented.  相似文献

Stratified materials are of great importance for many branches of modern industry, e.g. electronics or optics and for biomedical applications. Examination of chemical composition of individual layers and determination of their thickness helps to get information on their properties and function. A confocal 3D micro X‐ray fluorescence (3D µXRF) spectroscopy is an analytical method giving the possibility to investigate 3D distribution of chemical elements in a sample with spatial resolution in the micrometer regime in a non‐destructive way. Thin foils of Ti, Cu and Au, a bulk sample of Cu and a three‐layered sandwich sample, made of two thin Fe/Ni alloy foils, separated by polypropylene, were used as test samples. A Monte Carlo (MC) simulation code for the determination of elemental concentrations and thickness of individual layers in stratified materials with the use of confocal 3D µXRF spectroscopy was developed. The X‐ray intensity profiles versus the depth below surface, obtained from 3D µXRF experiments, MC simulation and an analytical approach were compared. Correlation coefficients between experimental versus simulated, and experimental versus analytical model X‐ray profiles were calculated. The correlation coefficients were comparable for both methods and exceeded 99%. The experimental X‐ray intensity profiles were deconvoluted with iterative MC simulation and by using analytical expression. The MC method produced slightly more accurate elemental concentrations and thickness of successive layers as compared to the results of the analytical approach. This MC code is a robust tool for simulation of scanning confocal 3D µXRF experiments on stratified materials and for quantitative interpretation of experimental results. Portable micro‐X‐ray fluorescence (micro‐XRF) spectrometers mostly utilize a polycapillary X‐ray lens along the excitation channel to collect, propagate and focus down to few tens of micrometers the X‐ray tube radiation. However, the polycapillary X‐ray lens increases the complexity of the quantification of micro‐XRF data because its transmission efficiency is strongly dependent on the lens specifications and the propagated X‐ray energy. This feature results to a significant and not easily predicted modification of the energy distribution of the primary X‐ray tube spectrum. In the present work, we propose a simple calibration procedure of the X‐ray lens transmission efficiency based on the fundamental parameters approach in XRF analysis. This analytical methodology is best suited for compact commercial and portable micro‐XRF spectrometers. The developed calibration procedure is validated through the quantitative analysis of a broad range of samples with archeological relevance such as glasses, historical copper alloys, silver and gold alloys offering an overall accuracy of less than 10%–15%. The design and performance of the microfocus spectroscopy beamline at the Diamond Light Source are described. The beamline is based on a 27 mm‐period undulator to give an operable energy range between 2 and 20.7 keV, enabling it to cover the K‐edges of the elements from P to Mo and the L3‐edges from Sr to Pu. Micro‐X‐ray fluorescence, micro‐EXAFS and micro‐X‐ray diffraction have all been achieved on the beamline with a spot size of ~3 µm. The principal optical elements of the beamline consist of a toroid mirror, a liquid‐nitrogen‐cooled double‐crystal monochromator and a pair of bimorph Kirkpatrick–Baez mirrors. The performance of the optics is compared with theoretical values and a few of the early experimental results are summarized.  相似文献

A study of the coherence and wavefront properties of a pseudo‐channel‐cut monochromator in comparison with a double‐crystal monochromator is presented. Using a double‐grating interferometer designed for the hard X‐ray regime, the complex coherence factor was measured and the wavefront distortions at the sample position were analyzed. A transverse coherence length was found in the vertical direction that was a factor of two larger for the channel‐cut monochromator owing to its higher mechanical stability. The wavefront distortions after different optical elements in the beam, such as monochromators and mirrors, were also quantified. This work is particularly relevant for coherent diffraction imaging experiments with synchrotron sources.  相似文献

Polychromatic X‐ray sources can be useful for photon‐starved small‐angle X‐ray scattering given their high spectral fluxes. Their bandwidths, however, are 10–100 times larger than those using monochromators. To explore the feasibility, ideal scattering curves of homogeneous spherical particles for polychromatic X‐rays are calculated and analyzed using the Guinier approach, maximum entropy and regularization methods. Monodisperse and polydisperse systems are explored. The influence of bandwidth and asymmetric spectra shape are explored via Gaussian and half‐Gaussian spectra. Synchrotron undulator spectra represented by two undulator sources of the Advanced Photon Source are examined as an example, as regards the influence of asymmetric harmonic shape, fundamental harmonic bandwidth and high harmonics. The effects of bandwidth, spectral shape and high harmonics on particle size determination are evaluated quantitatively.  相似文献

A radiation furnace that covers the temperature range from room temperature up to 1800 K has been designed and constructed for in situ synchrotron microtomography. The furnace operates under a vacuum or under any inert gas atmosphere. The two 1000 W halogen heating lamps are water‐ and air‐cooled. The samples are located at the focus of these lamp reflectors on a rotary feedthrough that is connected to a driving rotation stage below the furnace. The X‐ray beam penetrates the furnace through two X‐ray‐transparent vacuum‐sealed windows. Further windows can be used for temperature control, sample changing and gas inflow and outflow.  相似文献

Inelastic X‐ray scattering instruments in operation at third‐generation synchrotron radiation facilities are based on backreflections from perfect silicon crystals. This concept reaches back to the very beginnings of high‐energy‐resolution X‐ray spectroscopy and has several advantages but also some inherent drawbacks. In this paper an alternate path is investigated using a different concept, the `M4 instrument'. It consists of a combination of two in‐line high‐resolution monochromators, focusing mirrors and collimating mirrors. Design choices and performance estimates in comparison with existing conventional inelastic X‐ray scattering instruments are presented.  相似文献

Combined small‐ and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) is a powerful technique for the study of materials at length scales ranging from atomic/molecular sizes (a few angstroms) to the mesoscopic regime (~1 nm to ~1 µm). A set‐up to apply this technique at high X‐ray energies (E > 50 keV) has been developed. Hard X‐rays permit the execution of at least three classes of investigations that are significantly more difficult to perform at standard X‐ray energies (8–20 keV): (i) in situ strain analysis revealing anisotropic strain behaviour both at the atomic (WAXS) as well as at the mesoscopic (SAXS) length scales, (ii) acquisition of WAXS patterns to very large q (>20 Å?1) thus allowing atomic pair distribution function analysis (SAXS/PDF) of micro‐ and nano‐structured materials, and (iii) utilization of complex sample environments involving thick X‐ray windows and/or samples that can be penetrated only by high‐energy X‐rays. Using the reported set‐up a time resolution of approximately two seconds was demonstrated. It is planned to further improve this time resolution in the near future.  相似文献

The layout and the characteristics of the hard X‐ray beamline BL10 at the superconducting asymmetric wiggler at the 1.5 GeV Dortmund Electron Accelerator DELTA are described. This beamline is equipped with a Si(111) channel‐cut monochromator and is dedicated to X‐ray studies in the spectral range from ~4 keV to ~16 keV photon energy. There are two different endstations available. While X‐ray absorption studies in different detection modes (transmission, fluorescence, reflectivity) can be performed on a designated table, a six‐axis kappa diffractometer is installed for X‐ray scattering and reflectivity experiments. Different detector set‐ups are integrated into the beamline control software, i.e. gas‐filled ionization chambers, different photodiodes, as well as a Pilatus 2D‐detector are permanently available. The performance of the beamline is illustrated by high‐quality X‐ray absorption spectra from several reference compounds. First applications include temperature‐dependent EXAFS experiments from liquid‐nitrogen temperature in a bath cryostat up to ~660 K by using a dedicated furnace. Besides transmission measurements, fluorescence detection for dilute sample systems as well as surface‐sensitive reflection‐mode experiments are presented.  相似文献

A gas diffusion layer (GDL) in a polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) is quantitatively visualized using synchrotron X‐ray micro‐computed tomography. For three‐dimensional reconstruction, an adaptive threshold method is used. This method is compared with the conventional method, i.e. Otsu's method. Additionally, the spatial and temporal variations of the porosity distribution of the GDL under freeze‐and‐thaw cycles are investigated experimentally. The freeze‐and‐thaw cycles are established simply using a CRYO system and light source illumination, respectively. Structural defects are found to largely affect the porosity of the GDL. In addition, a cyclic porosity variation is observed in the GDL under freeze‐and‐thaw cycles. The heterogeneous porosity is irreversibly decreased with the progress of repetitive cycles.  相似文献

X‐ray imaging is used to visualize the biofluid flow phenomena in a nondestructive manner. A technique currently used for quantitative visualization is X‐ray particle image velocimetry (PIV). Although this technique provides a high spatial resolution (less than 10 µm), significant hemodynamic parameters are difficult to obtain under actual physiological conditions because of the limited temporal resolution of the technique, which in turn is due to the relatively long exposure time (~10 ms) involved in X‐ray imaging. This study combines an image intensifier with a high‐speed camera to reduce exposure time, thereby improving temporal resolution. The image intensifier amplifies light flux by emitting secondary electrons in the micro‐channel plate. The increased incident light flux greatly reduces the exposure time (below 200 µs). The proposed X‐ray PIV system was applied to high‐speed blood flows in a tube, and the velocity field information was successfully obtained. The time‐resolved X‐ray PIV system can be employed to investigate blood flows at beamlines with insufficient X‐ray fluxes under specific physiological conditions. This method facilitates understanding of the basic hemodynamic characteristics and pathological mechanism of cardiovascular diseases.  相似文献

A novel X‐ray Bragg optics is proposed for variable‐magnification of an X‐ray beam. This X‐ray Bragg optics is composed of two magnifiers in a crossed arrangement, and the magnification factor, M, is controlled through the azimuth angle of each magnifier. The basic properties of the X‐ray optics such as the magnification factor, image transformation matrix and intrinsic acceptance angle are described based on the dynamical theory of X‐ray diffraction. The feasibility of the variable‐magnification X‐ray Bragg optics was verified at the vertical‐wiggler beamline BL‐14B of the Photon Factory. For X‐ray Bragg magnifiers, Si(220) crystals with an asymmetric angle of 14° were used. The magnification factor was calculated to be tunable between 0.1 and 10.0 at a wavelength of 0.112 nm. At various magnification factors (M≥ 1.0), X‐ray images of a nylon mesh were observed with an air‐cooled X‐ray CCD camera. Image deformation caused by the optics could be corrected by using a 2 × 2 transformation matrix and bilinear interpolation method. Not only absorption‐contrast but also edge‐contrast due to Fresnel diffraction was observed in the magnified images.  相似文献

The characteristics of the X‐ray attenuation in electrospun nano(n)‐ and micro(m)‐Bi2O3/polylactic acid (PLA) nanofibre mats with different Bi2O3 loadings were compared as a function of energy using mammography (i.e. tube voltages of 22–49 kV) and X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) (7–20 keV). Results indicate that X‐ray attenuation by electrospun n‐Bi2O3/PLA nanofibre mats is distinctly higher than that of m‐Bi2O3/PLA nanofibre mats at all energies investigated. In addition, with increasing filler loading (n‐Bi2O3 or m‐Bi2O3), the porosity of the nanofibre mats decreased, thus increasing the X‐ray attenuation, except for the sample containing 38 wt% Bi2O3 (the highest loading in the present study). The latter showed higher porosity, with some beads formed, thus resulting in a sudden decrease in the X‐ray attenuation.  相似文献
