This study concerns the premier singing voice and its relationship to physiological aptitude. Research literature is reviewed that indicates that during singing the trained singer uses different physiological strategies in comparison with the untrained singer, and that the noted physiological differences (respiratory, laryngeal, articulatory) occur during singing only and not during speech. Further, a study was conducted that compared the ability of trained singers versus untrained individuals to (a) discriminate differences in self-generated air pressures and (b) produce and maintain a constant level of air pressure. No significant differences were found between the trained and untrained groups in their ability to discriminate and/or control breath pressure. Combined results of previous studies and present findings lead to the tentative conclusion that the excelled singer is not physiologically endowed and/or “gifted,” but rather has benefited from technical voice training  相似文献

Spasmodic dysphonia is a chronic voice disorder that is characterized by involuntary spasms of the laryngeal muscles during speech production. Botulinum toxin injection into to the laryngeal muscles is the most common and effective treatment of choice for symptoms of spasmodic dysphonia. We present a 44-year-old man with adductor spasmodic dysphonia who was diagnosed as having upper airway obstruction in a polysomnographic examination during sleep after a botulinum toxin injection.  相似文献

Vocal warm-up is thought to optimize singing performance. We compared effects of short-term, submaximal, vocal warm-up exercise with those of vocal rest on the soprano voice (n = 10, ages 19-21 years). Dependent variables were the minimum subglottic air pressure required for vocal fold oscillation to occur (phonation threshold pressure, Pth), and the maximum and minimum phonation fundamental frequency. Warm-up increased Pth for high pitch phonation (p = 0.033), but not for comfortable (p = 0.297) or low (p = 0.087) pitch phonation. No significant difference in the maximum phonation frequency (p = 0.193) or minimum frequency (p = 0.222) was observed. An elevated Pth at controlled high pitch, but an unchanging maximum and minimum frequency production suggests that short-term vocal exercise may increase the viscosity of the vocal fold and thus serve to stabilize the high voice.  相似文献

This study tested the accuracy of indirect methods of measurementof laryngeal airway resistance in normal subjects and in spasmodic dysphonia (SD). The indirect method assumes that subglottic air pressure remains constant during the voiced segment of a syllable. In this study subglottic air pressure was directly measured via puncture of the cricothyroid membrane in seven normal subjects and seven subjects with SD. The true laryngeal airway resistance was calculated and compared with airway resistance measured using indirect techniques based on intraoral air pressure. In five of the seven normal subjects, subglottic air pressure did not remain constant during the voiced segment. As a result, the error produced using indirect method of calculating average laryngeal resistance for the normal subjects varied from −44% to +50%. For SD subjects the error ranged from −49% to +22%. In general, the indirect technique over-estimated laryngeal airway resistance in normal subjects and underestimated the resistance in subjects with SD.  相似文献

A professional singer with laryngeal granuloma underwent surgery following failed response to conservative treatments. Two primary findings emerged. First, although a sizable lesion was present initially, presurgical voice measures were largely normal or superior. The exception was elevated phonatory effort during singing. Second, postsurgical voice functions were entirely normal or superior (including phonatory effort), despite demanding singing performances a few weeks following surgery. The results add to the limited corpus of quantitative, normative-referenced data on voice in patients with granulomas and are inconsistent with previous reports of voice abnormalities in such patients and poor functional response to surgery.  相似文献

It was known that the thermal response varies according to some variables. Until now, there are no studies that have investigated the relationship of skin temperature and heart rate during and after the workout, either the thermal behavior during postural changes. Objective: the aim of this study was to evaluate the behavior of skin temperature and heart rate, during exercise and up to an hour of recovery (with postural change), performed in two different intensities sessions (70% and 85% of 10 repetitions maximum) and observe the correlation between them. Method: This was a short longitudinal study, carried out with women aged from 18 to 30 years. A sample of 31 untrained women, aged 18 and 30 was used. The volunteers were randomized into two groups: Biceps Group (BG), with 15 women, and Quadriceps Group (QG) with 16 women. Results: During and after completion of the exercise session, there was a significant reduction in skin temperature on the active muscles in both groups (BG and QG), with similar thermal responses for the two intensities studied (70% and 85%) to the minute 15 (which marks the end of the recovery in the standing position). From minute 15 to minute 20–60, the skin temperature increases abruptly and significantly, returning to levels close to those observed before exercise. Conclusion: There were no statistical differences in thermal response to exercises in 70% or 85% of 10RM. There is a negative correlation between heart rate and skin temperature when untrained women perform anaerobic exercise. It was observed that after a change of posture (from a standing position to a sitting posture) skin temperature increased abruptly and significantly.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine respiratory phasing and loading levels of sternocleidomastoideus (STM), scalenus (SC), and upper trapezius (TR) muscles in vocalization tasks with variation in vocal loudness and pitch. Eight advanced singing students, aged 22 to 28 years, participated. Surface electromyographic (EMG) activity was recorded from STM, SC, and TR. Thorax movement was detected by two strain gauge sensors placed around the upper (upper TX) and lower (lower TX) thorax. A glissando and simplified singing and speaking tasks were performed. Sustained vowels /a:-i-ae-o:/ were sung in a glissando from lowest to highest pitch (mixed voice/falsetto) back to lowest pitch and in short singing sequences at comfortable, low, and high pitches. The same vowels were spoken softly and loudly for about the same length. The subjects inhaled between the vowels. It was concluded that the inspiratory phased STM and SC muscles produced a counterforce to compression of upper TX at high pitches in glissando. STM and SC were activated to higher levels during phonation than in inhalation. As breathing demands were reduced, STM and SC activity was lowered and the respiratory phasing of peak amplitude changed to inhalation. TR contributed to exhalation in demanding singing with long breathing cycles, but it was less active in singing tasks with short breathing cycles and was essentially inactive in simplified speaking tasks.  相似文献

Some desert sand dunes have the peculiar ability to emit a loud sound up to 110 dB, with a well-defined frequency: this phenomenon, known since early travelers (Darwin, Marco Polo, etc.), has been called the song of dunes. But only in late 19th century scientific observations were made, showing three important characteristics of singing dunes: first, not all dunes sing, but all the singing dunes are composed of dry and well-sorted sand; second, this sound occurs spontaneously during avalanches on a slip face; third this is not the only way to produce sound with this sand.More recent field observations have shown that during avalanches, the sound frequency does not depend on the dune size or shape, but on the grain diameter only, and scales as the square root of g/d - with g the gravity and d the diameter of the grains - explaining why all the singing dunes in the same vicinity sing at the same frequency.We have been able to reproduce these singing avalanches in laboratory on a hard plate, which made possible to study them more accurately than on the field. Signals of accelerometers at the flowing surface of the avalanche are compared to signals of microphones placed above, and it evidences a very strong vibration of the flowing layer at the same frequency as on the field, responsible for the emission of sound.Moreover, other characteristics of the booming dunes are reproduced and analyzed, such as a threshold under which no sound is produced, or beats in the sound that appears when the flow is too large. Finally, the size of the coherence zones emitting sound has been measured and discussed.  相似文献

This study investigates pitch control, register, and singing mode related movements of the laryngo-pharyngeal structures by radiographic methods. One trained female singer served as the subject. The results show that singing voice production involves complex movements in the laryngeal structures. Pitch related increase in the thyro-arytenoid distance (vocal fold length) is nonlinear, slowing down as pitch rises. Similar observations have been made earlier. At the highest pitches, a shortening of the distance can be seen, suggesting the use of alternative pitch control mechanisms. The various observations made support the existence of three registers in this trained female singing voice. Open and covered modes of singing seemed to be distinguishable on the basis of different amounts of inner and outer forces acting on the larynx. Therefore, caution must be exercised when generalizing from the results.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to define if the athletes may vary their warm-up according to the specific demands of event they are preparing for and that higher-level athletes may differ in their thermal responses than lower-level athletes. Ten top level Polish male decathletes (19.9 ± 3.0 yr, 187.9 ± 4.7 cm, 82.7 ± 6.7 kg) who participated in the study were examined with a thermographic camera. Thermal imaging of each athlete was undertaken three times: at rest before the warm-up began, immediately after the general warm-up, and immediately after the specific warm-up.As significant changes in skin surface temperatures were observed between rest and both general and specific warm-ups (p < 0.001) it seems that athletes are able to vary their warm-up according to the decathlon event. Moving from rest to the general warm-up was characterized by decrease of the body surface temperature within the decathletes as a cohort. Interestingly, correlation was found between decathlon result measured by points and decrease of temperatures after commencing the general or specific warm-up exercises (r = 0.62; p < 0.05). However, the higher-performing competitors were characterized by a higher variability of skin temperatures depending on the event being prepared for.The present findings suggest that in sporting competitions characterized by the need for specificity of warm-up of different muscular segments, thermal imaging can be useful observe thermoregulatory responses. Due to these observed individual thermal reactions to the physical effort of warm-up, the present findings suggest it is possible to individually adapt the warm-up to the needs of both the event being prepared for and the level of athlete.  相似文献

Mongolian “throat singing” can be performed in different modes. In Mongolia, the bass-type is called Kargyraa. The voice source in bass-type throat singing was studied in one male singer. The subject alternated between modal voice and the throat singing mode. Vocal fold vibrations were observed with high-speed photography, using a computerized recording system. The spectral characteristics of the sound signal were analyzed. Kymographic image data were compared to the sound signal and flow inverse filtering data from the same singer were obtained on a separate occasion. It was found that the vocal folds vibrated at the same frequency throughout both modes of singing. During throat singing the ventricular folds vibrated with complete but short closures at half the frequency of the true vocal folds, covering every second vocal fold closure. Kymographic data confirmed the findings. The spectrum contained added subharmonics compared to modal voice. In the inverse filtered signal the amplitude of every second airflow pulse was considerably lowered. The ventricular folds appeared to modulate the sound by reducing the glottal flow of every other vocal fold vibratory cycle.  相似文献

The abduction quotient, a measure of effective glottal width, was obtained for electroglottographic recordings from a professional operatic baritone singer. The subject produced repeated tokens of the voice qualities breathy, normal, and pressed (or constricted) in both a speech and a singing manner. In the singing manner, the subject produced the three vocal qualities at three pitch levels and three loudness levels. The abduction quotient decreased from breathy to pressed voice, suggesting that the measure corresponds to effective glottal width. The measure was found to be consistently low during all conditions of singing, suggesting that the subject produced all singing tokens with relatively strong laryngeal adduction at the vocal process level. Although the results of this study support the validity and usefulness of the abduction quotient, further verification is needed.  相似文献

The study aimed to characterize the activity patterns of neck muscles during classical singing. Muscle usage during inhalation and phonation and the relationship to changes in pitch and vocal loudness was of particular interest. Five professional opera singers (2 males, 3 females) participated. Surface electromyographic activity (EMG) was recorded from the upper trapezius (TR), the sternocleidomastoideus (STM), and the scalenus (SC) muscles and the muscles in the posterior neck region (PN). EMG activity in TR and STM was lowered by EMG biofeedback (BF), and the possible effect of lowered EMG activity in these muscles on the EMG activity of SC and PN was analyzed. A strain gauge sensor recorded the chest circumference of the thorax. Three singing tasks were performed. Each task was performed three times with variation in vocal loudness and pitch. After the first performance of the singing tasks, the BF session was carried out. Thereafter muscle activity was recorded in repeat performances of the same tasks, and the EMG amplitude of all muscles was compared before and after BF. We conclude that STM and SC showed correlated activity patterns during inhalation and phonation by classical singers. Second, substantial muscle activity was observed in PN during inhalation and phonation. BF performed on TR and STM had a secondary effect of lowering EMG activity in SC and PN. The activity of all neck muscles was markedly elevated when singing in the highest pitch. There was no consistent task-based difference in EMG amplitude for the other singing tasks.  相似文献

Subsurface flaws, which determine the fracture strength of crystals, can be removed by the aid of chemical etching. Above a temperature of 200°C orthophosphoric acid H3PO4 is an efficient etchant for yttrium aluminium garnets. However, at these temperatures the etchant decomposes into its related phosphoric acids which show negligible etching rates for garnets. It takes a long time to warm up a large volume of acid and the etchant is decomposed for the most part already before the optimum temperature is reached. We show that efficient etching is achieved when the samples are in the bath already during the warm-up phase and specify the parameters for the optimum etch process.  相似文献

Risk factors for vocal cord hemorrhages were reviewed in 44 professional voice users. In a majority of cases, the direct cause of hemorrhage was temporally related to singing, public speaking, or some form of forceful laryngeal activity. Sixteen of the 44 patients had a concomitant upper respiratory tract infection, and in the case of women patients, eight of 30 had hormonal imbalances. These included abnormal menstrual cycles, use of estrogen supplements, gynecological surgery, and the use of birth control pills. In most of these cases, correction of the underlying hormonal disturbance prevented the recurrence of bleeding episodes. We stress that such abnormalities should be ruled out by history and appropriate tests when necessary, to prevent the occasional crippling sequelae of vocal cord hemorrhages and review the various treatment options available for this condition.  相似文献

Measurements of air pressure and flow were made using an in vivo canine model of the larynx. Subglottic pressures at varying flow rates were taken during phonation induced by laryngeal nerve stimulation. Results showed that during constant vocal fold stiffness, subglottic pressure rose slightly with increased air flow. The larynx in the in vivo canine model exhibited a flow-dependent decrease in laryngeal airway resistance. Increasing flow rate was associated with an increase in frequency of phonation and open quotient, as measured glottographically. Results from this experiment were compared with a theoretical two-mass model of the larynx and other theoretical models of phonation. The influence of aerodynamic forces on glottal vibration is explained by increased lateral excursion of the vocal folds during the open interval and shortening of the closed interval during the glottal cycle.  相似文献

Purpose

To investigate the alterations in water–fat (W-F) ratio of the normal breast tissue of female volunteers as a function of the histological phases of the menstrual cycle.

Methods

Image-guided volume localized in vivo proton (1H) magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) at 1.5 T was carried out in the para-areolar region and the upper and lower quadrants of the normal breast tissue of volunteers (n=29; mean age 33.7±6 years) during five histological phases of the menstrual cycle.

Results

A W-F value of 0.90±0.41 was observed for the para-areolar region during the proliferative phase, which reduced to 0.46±0.21 and 0.45±0.25 during follicular and luteal phases, respectively. The value increased to 0.76±0.61 during secretory and to 0.87±0.37 during menstrual phases. No significant difference was observed in the W-F value for the upper and the lower quadrants of the breast during various phases of the menstrual cycle. However, the W-F ratio of the para-areolar region was significantly higher compared to the upper and the lower quadrants during all phases. This reflects the dependence of W-F value on the amount of glandular and adipose tissues and the heterogeneous nature of the breast.

Conclusions

Our results indicate that changes in the normal breast tissue characteristics occur due to physiological factors like menstrual cycle that strongly influences the W-F value especially the para-areolar region in a cyclic manner. Thus any assessment of breast pathology using W-F values should be carried out carefully taking into consideration the location of the tumor within the breast as well as the time of menstruation.  相似文献

Recently, clinicians have observed an increase in the incidence of laryngeal papilloma coincident with the rising incidence of venereal warts. The lesions occur in young adults of professional singing age. Different types of human papillomavirus (HPV) are presented. Gynecologic exam revealed cervical tumors, involving 18 HPV in benign and malignant lesions. Thirty patients with the following pathologic conditions were studied: 10 papillomas, 10 severe dysplasias, and 10 invasive cancers. All the lesions were located on the free edge of the vocal folds or the anterior commissure involving the epithelium. The results are as follows: 11 patients (33%) had virus infection, of which four had HPV 6 or HPV 11 on laryngeal papilloma, three had HPV 16 or HPV 18 on severe dysplasia, four had HPV 16 or HPV 18 on carcinoma; and 19 (66%) had no virus infection. Gynecologic research in this field is more advanced. However, this preliminary report raises interesting research questions in laryngology.  相似文献
