This study evaluates the laryngoscopic findings and voice characteristics of male contact granuloma patients before and after voice therapy and at a follow-up about 9 years later. Pre- and posttherapy recordings as well as follow-up recordings were made for 19 granuloma patients. Pretherapy revealed the most salient perceptual voice characteristics were low pitch, monotony, and a high degree of vocal fry and hyperfunction. Interjudge reliability for these traits was high. Immediately following therapy the healed patients (n = 10) had a decrease in hyperfunction, vocal fry, and monotony, while the unhealed patients (n = 9) had an increase in hyperfunction and vocal fry decreased only marginally. Monotony decreased significantly in this group. As regards the acoustic analyses, no significant differences were found in mean fundamental frequency (F0) or perturbation. At the follow-up assessment 4 patients had granuloma while 15 had normal laryngeal status. Perceptually their voice characteristics resembled those pretherapy independently of the laryngeal findings. The results suggest that reduced hyperfunction and decreased vocal fry may create better circumstances for the healing process at the posterior glottis.  相似文献

Harmonics-to-Noise Ratio: An Index of Vocal Aging   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Distinguishing between vocal changes that occur with normal aging and those that are associated with disease is an important goal of research in voice. Several acoustic measures have been used in an attempt to illuminate the integrity of the vocal mechanism, including harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR), jitter, and fundamental frequency (F0). HNR is a measure that quantifies the amount of additive noise in the voice signal; jitter reflects the periodicity of vocal fold vibration. In this study, measures of HNR, jitter and F0 were used to compare vocal function in three groups of normally speaking women: young adults, middle-aged adults, and elderly adults. Significant differences in HNR emerged between the elderly women and the other two groups. F0 differences were also apparent between the elderly group and the two younger groups; there were no significant differences in jitter between the three groups. HNR was found to be a more sensitive index of vocal function than jitter. The significant lowering of HNR evident in the elderly speakers may be attributable in part to medications taken by the majority of these elderly subjects.  相似文献

In dynamical motor theory, skill acquisition occurs as a modification of preexisting coordination patterns or attractor states. The purpose of this study was to assess how different levels of voice onset, voice quality, and fundamental frequency (F0) combine to form the attractor states common to voice motor control. Three levels of voice onset (glottal, simultaneous, and breathy), voice quality (modal speech, mixed, and falsetto), and fundamental frequency (low, mid, and high) were manipulated by vocally untrained, female subjects. Percent correct of acquisition trials and self-report of effort were used as measures of stable phonations indicative of an attractor state. Using intensity as a covariate, the results provided support for two of the three predicted triads representing attractor states in female speakers: (1) glottal onset/modal speech quality/low F0; and (2) breathy onset/falsetto quality/high F0. The results of this study suggest that certain parameters of voice motor control, such as onset, quality, and F0, exist as part of a dynamical system that can be identified and manipulated in voice motor acquisition and learning.  相似文献

The purpose was to determine the clinical value of a multiparametric objective voice evaluation protocol including acoustic and aerodynamic parameters measured mainly on a sustained /a/. This was done by comparison with perceptual analysis of continuous speech by a jury composed of 6 experienced listeners. Voice samples (continuous speech) from 63 male patients with dysphonia and 21 control subjects with normal voices were recorded and assesed by a jury of listeners. The jury was instructed to classify voice samples according to the G (overall dysphonia) component of the GRBAS score on a 4-point scale ranging from 0 for normal to 3 for severe dysphonia. Objective parameters were recorded on an EVA® workstation. As usual with this type of system, parameters were measured mainly on a sustained /a/. Measured parameters included fundamental frequency (F0), intensity, jitter, shimmer, signal-to-noise ratio, Lyapunov coefficient (LC), oral airflow (OAF), maximum phonatory time (MPT), and vocal range (range). Estimated subglottic pressure (ESGP) was determined on a series of /pa/. Discriminant analysis was performed to detect correlation between jury classification and combinations of parameters. Results showed that a nonlinear combination of only six parameters (range, LC, ESGP, MPT, signal-to-noise ratio, and F0) allowed 86% concordance with jury classification. Discussion deals with the relative importance of the different objective parameters for discriminant analysis. Special emphasis is placed on two measurements rarely made in routine clinical workup, i.e., estimated subglottic pressure and Lyapunov coefficient.  相似文献

The box-counting method for determining the fractal dimension (Dfj)was applied to the fundamental frequency (F0) perturbations in normal and pathological voices in order to assess its clinical value. The upper limit of these Dfj values was similar for both groups, but the distribution for pathological voices extended to lower values than for the normal voices. However, these lower values were most probably the result of one or a few outlying frequency points due to incorrect determination of the vocal period. The Dfj of normal voices were within the range of values found for randomly varying F0 values. It was concluded, that the vocal perturbations in pathological voices are also more or less randomly distributed. So, the Dfj, at that least determined with the box-counting method, do not contain clinically relevant information in addition to the traditional measures for the extent of the vocal period perturbations. An exception is special perturbation types like diplophonia. The result of the computation is very sensitive for voice breaks and vibrato and depends on the number of periods.  相似文献

High-pitched productions present difficulties in formant frequency analysis due to wide harmonic spacing and poorly defined formants. As a consequence, there is little reliable data regarding children's spoken or sung vowel formants. Twenty-nine 11-year-old Swedish children were asked to produce 4 sustained spoken and sung vowels. In order to circumvent the problem of wide harmonic spacing, F1 and F2 measurements were taken from vowels produced with a sweeping F0. Experienced choir singers were selected as subjects in order to minimize the larynx height adjustments associated with pitch variation in less skilled subjects. Results showed significantly higher formant frequencies for speech than for singing. Formants were consistently higher in girls than in boys suggesting longer vocal tracts in these preadolescent boys. Furthermore, formant scaling demonstrated vowel dependent differences between boys and girls suggesting non-uniform differences in male and female vocal tract dimensions. These vowel-dependent sex differences were not consistent with adult data.  相似文献

Subglottal pressure is one of the main voice control factors, controlling vocal loudness. In this investigation the effects of subglottal pressure variation on the voice source in untrained female and male voices phonating at a low, a middle, and a high fundamental frequency are analyzed. The subjects produced a series of /pae/ syllables at varied degrees of vocal loudness, attempting to keep pitch constant. Subglottal pressure was estimated from the oral pressure during the /p/ occlusion. Ten subglottal pressure values, approximately equidistantly spaced within the pressure range used, were identified, and the voice source of the vowels following these pressure values was analyzed by inverse filtering the airflow signal as captured by a Rothenberg mask. The maximum flow declination rate (MFDR) was found to increase linearly with subglottal pressure, but a given subglottal pressure produced lower values for female than for male voices. The closed quotient increased quickly with subglottal pressure at low pressures and slowly at high pressures, such that the relationship can be approximated by a power function. For a given subglottal pressure value, female voices reached lower values of closed quotient than male voices.  相似文献

Vocal training (VT) has, in part, been associated with the distinctions in the physiological, acoustic, and perceptual parameters found in singers' voices versus the voices of nonsingers. This study provides information on the changes in the singing voice as a function of VT over time. Fourteen college voice majors (12 females and 2 males; age range, 17–20 years) were recorded while singing, once a semester, for four consecutive semesters. Acoustic measures included fundamental frequency (F0) and sound pressure level (SPL) of the 10% and 90% levels of the maximum phonational frequency range (MPFR), vibrato pulses per second, vibrato amplitude variation, and the presence of the singer's formant. Results indicated that VT had a significant effect on the MPFR. F0 and SPL of the 90% level of the MPFR and the 90–10% range increased significantly as VT progressed. However, no vibrato or singers' formant differences were detected as a function of training. This longitudinal study not only validates previous cross-sectional research, ie, that VT has a significant effect on the singing voice, but also it demonstrates that these effects can be acoustically detected by the fourth semester of college vocal training.  相似文献

Acoustic analysis of the speaking voice after thyroidectomy   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Voices of 47 female patients were analyzed before and after thyroidectomy, with preservation of the recurrent and superior laryngeal nerves and normal vocal fold motility during the observation period. A mean decrease of the speaking fundamental frequency (SFF) of 12 Hz was found on day 4; in 8 patients the postoperative vocal pitch was more than 2 semitones lower. The distance between the highest and lowest F0 during speaking was diminished (speech was more monotone) and the vocal jitter was elevated. In the frequency spectrum, there was a diminished prominence of the harmonics. The other spectral parameters (as the slope of the spectrum and the H1/H2 ratio) were unchanged. All changes had disappeared the fifteenth day, except for a lower SFF (>2 semitones) in 2 cases. It is concluded that after normal dissection of the laryngeal nerves, and in the absence of vocal fold paresis, other reasons for voice changes immediately after thyroidectomy remain: alterations in the neck muscles, in the laryngeal mucosa, and in the patient's general condition. Although the effects seem limited and of short duration, knowledge of them is helpful when informing the patient before thyroid surgery.  相似文献

Pressure has an important effect on chemical bonds and their chemical properties. The atypical compounds NaCl_3 and CsF_3 are predicted to be stable at high pressure and show unique physical and chemical properties. By using ab initio random structure searching and density functional theory calculations, we predicted multiple thermodynamically stable atypical compounds, which are RbF_2, RbF_3, RbF_4, and RbF_5 in the pressure range of 0–300 GPa. In these stable compounds, homonuclear bondings of F_3, F_4, and F_5 species are easily formed. The electron structure calculation showed that except for Fd-3 m phase of RbF_2, these stable compounds are insulators and F 5 p orbitals play an important role in the Fermi level. It is interesting that the compounds RbF_5 could be stable at nearly ambient pressure and 0 K which will stimulate experimental studies in the future.  相似文献

This paper examines an updated version of a lumped mucosal wave model of the vocal fold oscillation during phonation. Threshold values of the subglottal pressure and the mean (DC) glottal airflow for the oscillation onset are determined. Depending on the nonlinear characteristics of the model, an oscillation hysteresis phenomenon may occur, with different values for the oscillation onset and offset threshold. The threshold values depend on the oscillation frequency, but the occurrence of the hysteresis is independent of it. The results are tested against pressure data collected from a mechanical replica of the vocal folds, and oral airflow data collected from speakers producing intervocalic /h/. In the human speech data, observed differences between voice onset and offset may be attributed to variations in voice pitch, with a very small or inexistent hysteresis phenomenon.  相似文献

Vocal warm-up is thought to optimize singing performance. We compared effects of short-term, submaximal, vocal warm-up exercise with those of vocal rest on the soprano voice (n = 10, ages 19-21 years). Dependent variables were the minimum subglottic air pressure required for vocal fold oscillation to occur (phonation threshold pressure, Pth), and the maximum and minimum phonation fundamental frequency. Warm-up increased Pth for high pitch phonation (p = 0.033), but not for comfortable (p = 0.297) or low (p = 0.087) pitch phonation. No significant difference in the maximum phonation frequency (p = 0.193) or minimum frequency (p = 0.222) was observed. An elevated Pth at controlled high pitch, but an unchanging maximum and minimum frequency production suggests that short-term vocal exercise may increase the viscosity of the vocal fold and thus serve to stabilize the high voice.  相似文献

This study was aimed at identifying acoustic and physiological measures useful for monitoring voice changes in postnasopharyngeal patients with nonlaryngeal malignancies, and providing evidences of vocal tract effect on voice through comparisons between individuals with and without intact vocal tract. Simultaneous acoustic-electroglottographic signals recorded during phonation of vowels /i/ and /a/ sustained at habitual, high, and low pitch levels were compared among 10 postradiotherapy patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), 10 voice patients (VPs) with intact vocal tract, and 10 healthy individuals with normal voice (NORM). Results from a series of discriminant analyses revealed that the NPC group generally exhibited lower signal-to-noise (SNR) and open quotient (OQ) and higher Formant 1 frequency (F(1)) and speed quotient (SQ) than the NORM group. Unlike both VP and NORM groups, the NPC group failed to show a pitch effect on all voice measures, including OQ, SQ, percent jitter, percent shimmer, and SNR, suggesting an effect of radiotherapy and/or vocal tract on laryngeal behaviors. For the vowel /i/, on the other hand, only the NPC and NORM groups showed a pattern of pitch-dependent F(1) raising, a reflection of increased pharyngeal narrowing. These findings suggested that the pitch effect on laryngeal behaviors differed not only between individuals with intact vocal tract and those without but also between those with structural and dynamic changes of vocal tract.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to test the hypothesis that intrinsic laryngeal muscles are involved in producing voice fundamental frequency (F(0)) responses to perturbations in voice pitch auditory feedback. Electromyography (EMG) recordings of the cricothyroid and thyroarytenoid muscles were made with hooked-wire electrodes, while subjects sustained vowel phonations at three different voice F(0) levels (conversational, high pitch in head register, and falsetto register) and received randomized pitch shifts (±100 or ±300 cents) in their voice auditory feedback. The median latencies from stimulus onset to the peak in the EMG and voice F(0) responses were 167 and 224 ms, respectively. Among the three different F(0) levels, the falsetto register produced compensatory EMG responses that occurred prior to vocal responses and increased along with rising voice F(0) responses and decreased for falling F(0) responses. For the conversational and high voice levels, the EMG response timing was more variable than in the falsetto voice, and changes in EMG activity with relevance to the vocal responses did not follow the consistent trend observed in the falsetto condition. The data from the falsetto condition suggest that both the cricothyroid and thyroarytenoid muscles are involved in generating the compensatory vocal responses to pitch-shifted voice feedback.  相似文献

Variation in duration and frequency during three readings of each of eight sentences by 9 normal and 4 voice-disordered subjects are compared. Instructions to the subjects varied with respect to the amount and type of cognitive cueing presented in the trials, and the sentences were read in random order. Variability in fundamental frequency (F0) was greater when pitch variation was specifically cued. Also, the portion of the sentence that was cued had greater variability in F0 than other parts of the sentence. Variation in fundamental frequency was significantly greater in the cued versus uncued sentence trials for the voice-disordered subjects but not for the normal subjects. However, all subjects exhibited significantly greater duration for cued versus uncued readings of the same sentences. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.  相似文献

Nineteen trained soprano singers aged 18–30 years vocalized tasks designed to assess average speaking fundamental frequency (SFF) during spontaneous speaking and reading. Vocal range and perceptual characteristics while singing with low intensity and high frequency were also assessed, and subjects completed a survey of vocal habits/symptoms. Recorded signals were digitized prior to being analyzed for SFF using the Kay Computerized Speech Lab program. Subjects were assigned to a normal voice or impaired voice group based on ratings of perceptual tasks and survey results. Data analysis showed group differences in mean SFF, no differences in vocal range, higher mean SFF values for reading than speaking, and 58% ability to perceive speaking in low pitch. The role of speaking in too low pitch as causal for vocal symptoms and need for voice classification differentiation in vocal performance studies are discussed.  相似文献

Two sounds with the same pitch may vary from each other based on saliency of their pitch sensation. This perceptual attribute is called "pitch strength." The study of voice pitch strength may be important in quantifying of normal and pathological qualities. The present study investigated how pitch strength varies across normal and dysphonic voices. A set of voices (vowel /a/) selected from the Kay Elemetrics Disordered Voice Database served as the stimuli. These stimuli demonstrated a wide range of voice quality. Ten listeners judged the pitch strength of these stimuli in an anchored magnitude estimation task. On a given trial, listeners heard three different stimuli. The first stimulus represented very low pitch strength (wide-band noise), the second stimulus consisted of the target voice and the third stimulus represented very high pitch strength (pure tone). Listeners estimated pitch strength of the target voice by positioning a continuous slider labeled with values between 0 and 1, reflecting the two anchor stimuli. Results revealed that listeners can judge pitch strength reliably in dysphonic voices. Moderate to high correlations with perceptual judgments of voice quality suggest that pitch strength may contribute to voice quality judgments.  相似文献

Measurements on the inverse filtered airflow waveform (the "glottal waveform") and of estimated average transglottal pressure and glottal airflow were made from noninvasive recordings of productions of syllable sequences in soft, normal, and loud voice for 25 male and 20 female speakers. Statistical analyses showed that with change from normal to loud voice, both males and females produced loud voice with increased pressure, accompanied by increased ac flow and increased maximum airflow declination rate. With change from normal voice, soft voice was produced with decreased pressure, ac flow and maximum airflow declination rate, and increased dc and average flow. Within the loudness conditions, there was no significant male-female difference in air pressure. Several glottal waveform parameters separated males and females in normal and loud voice. The data indicate higher ac flow and higher maximum airflow declination rate for males. In soft voice, the male and female glottal waveforms were more alike, and there was no significant difference in maximum airflow declination rate. The dc flow did not differ significantly between males and females. Possible relevance to biomechanical differences and differences in voice source characteristics between males and females and across loudness conditions is discussed.  相似文献
