The characteristics of a vacuum arc between CuCr contacts under an axial magnetic field have been investigated. Test samples were made of CuCr contacts, and the arcing voltage was measured. The arcing voltage of the CuCr contacts under an axial magnetic field is lower than that of pure copper contacts by 10-20 V. From the measurement of the post-arc current and interruption test results, it was found that the arc concentrates and a part of the electrode melts at a rather low current, but that the electrode melting does not affect the interrupting capability. Also, the insulation characteristics were measured. With respect to voltage conditioning, high-current conditioning improved the breakdown voltage by 50 percent for a 20-mm gap and by 100 percent for a 3-mm gap. These test results show that CuCr contacts, used with axial magnetic fields, are promising for use in high-voltage and high-power vacuum interrupters.  相似文献

Our new vacuum arc control technology SADE doubles the high current interruption capability of our conventional axial magnetic field technology. First, we describe the vacuum arc motion behavior recorded by a high speed charge-coupled device video camera. This arc behavior is closely related to axial magnetic field intensity. In particular, it depends on the profile of the externally generated axial magnetic field. The anode spot is likely to move to the highest magnetic field intensity. Second, we describe analytical results for concentration of vacuum arc at the anode side contact surface. This analysis implies the possibility of an ideal magnetic field profile and intensity for vacuum arc control. Finally, we describe experimental results for vacuum arc control compared with the physical and theoretical results mentioned above, and we show a practical electrode configuration for vacuum interrupters and its application in a high current interruption experiment  相似文献

When an axial magnetic field is applied to a vacuum arc, the arc tends to be stabilized in its diffuse mode. A minimum arc voltage is found for a certain magnetic field. In this condition, interrupting current is significantly increased, and it is nearly proportional to the diameter of electrodes. About ten years ago, a practical axial magnetic field electrode was developed for vacuum circuit breakers. Since then, through various improvements in its structure, this electrode has been refined for practical application in vacuum circuit breaker interrupters. The application has successfully covered not only medium-voltage circuit breakers, but also high-voltage (84 kV), dc high-voltage, and high-current circuit breakers. In this paper, ten years experience in this area is described.  相似文献

New methods have been developed for investigating vacuum arcs applied to the improvements of vacuum interrupter electrodes. Electrode surface temperature measurements reveal the anode surface melting condition at the current interruption and its influence on interruption capability, and a digital image processing technology gives us a clear understanding of the arcing phenomenon. Measurements and test results have shown the advantages of axial magnetic field electrodes in increasing the interruption capability of vacuum interrupters. It is confirmed that axial magnetic field electrodes are superior to other types of electrodes, and we believe that these new investigation methods promote the optimization of the electrode structure and the realization of higher voltage and current rating vacuum interrupters  相似文献

The interaction between diffuse vacuum arcs and magnetic fields applied transverse to the electrode axis has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally. For arc currents < 6 kA, Hall electric fields, generated by the interaction, bow the plasma out of contact with the anode and raise the arc voltage. In the presence of a parallel capacitor, the arc current falls to zero and the arc is extinguished. For arc currents of 6 to 15 kA, arc extinction can be achieved with an oscillatory magnetic field; during such extinctions the arc voltage remains in phase with the magnitude of the field. Arc extinction via magnetic field/vacuum arc interaction could have applications to ac-current limiters and dc breakers. The fault current limiter application is discussed in this paper.  相似文献

This paper presents a brief review of anode phenomena in vacuum arcs. It discusses in succession the transition of the arc into the anode spot mode; the temperature of the anode before, during, and after formation of an anode spot; and anode ions. Characteristically the anode spot has a temperature of the order of the atmospheric boiling point of the anode material and is a copious source of vapor and energetic ions. The dominant mechanism controlling the transition of the vacuum arc into the anode spot mode appears to depend upon the electrode geometry, the electrode material, and the current waveform of the particular vacuum arc being considered. Either magnetic constriction in the gap plasma or gross anode melting can trigger the transition, indeed a combination of the two is a common cause of anode spot formation.  相似文献

By using ferromagnetic material around electrodes to generate strong nonuniform magnetic fields, vacuum arcs can be kept in well-defined diffuse mode or multiple arc mode. As a result, the arc voltage is low and stable, the current is confined in certain areas, and high interrupting ability and small size are achieved. The different arc modes for different electrodes, the arc voltage versus arc current for flat electrodes, horseshoe, and four-pole electrode, and the vacuum arc distribution are measured. The criteria of choice of electrode diameter and electrode distance are given  相似文献

Vacuum arc cathode spot grouping and motion in magnetic fields   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Two of the important vacuum arc phenomena observed when the arc runs in a transverse magnetic field are cathode spot grouping and the cathode spot retrograde motion, i.e., in the anti-Amperian direction. This paper summarizes the main experimental observations and proposes a physical model for spot grouping and spot retrograde motion. The proposed spot motion model take in account the previous theoretical model of the cathode thermal regime and the plasma flow near the cathode surface that is based on two conditions: i) the heat loss in the cathode bulk is relatively small to the heat influx, and ii) the plasma flow in the Knudsen layer is impeded. In the present model, the current per group spot is calculated by assuming that the plasma kinetic pressure is comparable to the self-magnetic pressure in the acceleration region of cathode plasma jet. The model includes equations for the current per spot group, spot velocity dependence on the magnetic field and on the arc current in vacuum, as well as in gas filled arc gap. The calculated currents per spot group and spot velocity increase linearly with the magnetic field and arc current, and this dependencies well agree with previous observations. The cathode spot retrograde motion in short electrode gaps and at atmospheric pressure arcs, and the reversal motion in strong magnetic fields (>1 T) observed by Robson and Engel are discussed. The details of the retrograde motion observed in the last decades including the spot velocity dependence on the electrode gap, roughness, temperature, and material could be understood in the frame of the proposed model.  相似文献

In low-current vacuum arcs, short (<500-ns) peaks in arc voltage (instabilities), with a height of up to ten times the normal arc voltage, are abundantly present. The instabilities are thought to be caused by ion starvation near the anode. A number of parameters of these instabilities, occurring in vacuum interrupters with AgWC (low-surge) and CuCr (conventional) contact material, have been analyzed statistically in a practical AC circuit. A striking difference in median rate of rise and height is found. It is found plausible that these parameters reflect important switching characteristics such as recovery (peak rate of rise) and current chopping level (peak height). Also, the dependence of the parameters on momentary arc current and contact distance is studied and explained qualitatively  相似文献

We observed metal vapor arcs between separating electrodes in a demountable vacuum chamber using high speed photography. The peak values of the ac arc current half-wave ranged from 5 kA to 67 kA. Determination of the arc appearance as functions of arc current and electrode gap revealed that the arc can assume various types of columnar forms when the current at the instant of electrode separation exceeds 7 kA. The duration of the columnar arcing forms is influenced by axial magnetic fields differently for different field strengths. The graphical representation of the results allows prediction of the most probable arc appearance for a given set of operating parameters. A qualitative explanation of the various arc appearances on the basis of balances between magnetic and kinetic pressures is provided.  相似文献

Explanations are given regarding recent technical topics in the development of vacuum circuit breakers. The area-effect concept is introduced to aid in insulation designs of vacuum interrupters. By using Cu-Cr prepared through a special method, the voltage performance of vacuum interrupters has been remarkably improved. Through the development of axial magnetic field electrodes, large-current interruption has been made possible. The design concept for determining contact radii has been established. A computer simulation method for generating switching overvoltage is described, thereby indicating the possibility of realizing large-current interrupting vacuum interrupters with low switching overvoltages  相似文献

This paper reports about experimental investigations on high-current vacuum-arc phenomena, especially anode-spot formation, arc states, and motion. The presented work was stimulated by lack of information about the transition process from the diffuse low-current mode to the high-current mode characterized by anode spot(s). Optoelectronic measurements, streak photographs, high-speed movies, and correlated arc voltage/current records yielded remarkable results on power-frequency vacuum arcs. Three different high-current vacuum arc modes can be observed beyond a certain threshold current. Which mode appears depends mainly on the momentary electrode distance. The modes are characterized by different anode-spot behavior and interelectrode phenomena. The transition between different arc modes is continuous. The arc modes observed on ring electrodes producing a magnetic blast field are the same as those appearing on butt-type electrodes. Anode-spot formation is preceded by congregations of cathode spots and may be initiated by thermal overload of the anode surface opposite to these cathode-spot clusters.  相似文献

In order to investigate the applicability of experiments on reduced size models to full size gas blast interrupters, a series of air blast experiments was performed in which peak currents and test frequency were varied together, keeping dl/dt at current zero fixed. With a strong effect of l thus eliminated, with current blocking avoided, and with the electrode vapour effect suitably controlled, the post current zero thermal recovery speed of the arc was found to be independent of the power or test frequency. Similar experiments were performed with several electrode materials. To these have been added measurements of electrode vapour contamination level and a theoretical model. In combination, they indicate strongly that a modest degree of vapour contamination (~ one percent) by a low ionization potential material (copper) can increase the electrical conductivity of an arc enough to halve its thermal recovery speed.  相似文献

The basic characteristics of a vacuum arc are investigated with a special electrode whose cathode consists of two half-disks. Pure copper is used for one part of the cathode, while copper, chromium, silver, and titanium are used for the other part. The tested arc current value is less than 4000 A, and the flux density of the axial magnetic field applied to a vacuum arc is less than 0.015 T. Experimental results show that the arc voltages of dual-part cathode electrodes are much lower than those of the individual pure metals, and that current sharing between the two parts is roughly determined by the arc current-voltage characteristics of the metals. The arc voltage of the dual-part cathode electrode is extremely low when the current is less than 1000 A  相似文献

Stationary plasma discharges have been investigated in a high vacuum ambient (background gas pressure <10-2 Pa), with an externally heated cathode and a consumable hot evaporating anode. With various anode materials like chromium or copper, and electrode separations between 0.5 and 3 mm, the nonself-sustained discharge operates with DC arc currents in the range of 220 A. The waveform of the arc voltage is strongly influenced by the magnetic field of the cathode heating current, and arc voltages between a minimum of 3 V and a maximum exceeding 100 V have been observed. The voltage-current characteristics (VCC) and the influence of the electrode separation have been measured separately for the minimum and the maximum of the arc voltages and show a different behavior. The metal plasma expands into the ambient vacuum toward the walls of the vacuum vessel and offers a macroparticle free deposition source of thin films. The arc voltage can be varied by external manipulations of the arc discharge, and the mean ion energy of the expanding metal plasma shows a linear dependence of the mean arc voltage  相似文献

Retrograde velocity of vacuum arcs in transverse magnetic fields is known to depend on, among other things, the magnetic induction, the arc current, the electrode spacing, the cathode material, and the cathode surface condition, and was also found to depend on the cathode temperature. Using the optical method, the retrograde velocity was measured as a function of the cathode temperature with copper, aluminum, and stainless steel as cathode materials. The optical measurement shows that by increasing the cathode temperature, the arc velocity decreases. It appears that with the increase in the cathode temperature, the decrease of the arc velocity is related to the increase of the cathode crater radius. The experimentally measured temperature dependence of the retrograde velocity of vacuum arcs can be explained by the ion jet model for retrograde motion of vacuum arcs [10]. The relative decrease of retrograde velocity as a function of the cathode temperature calculated according to this model agrees quantitatively with the reported measurements.  相似文献

Computational methods for evaluating the complex magnetic field structure in axial magnetic field type vacuum interrupters based on horseshoe electrode geometry are demonstrated. Arcing behavior can only be understood by incorporating an arcing model. An essentially low-current arcing model is capable of predicting the high-current arcing behavior and can be used to optimize the contact structure  相似文献

Statistical property of the breakdown between stainless or copper electrode and stainless arc shield is studied by applying (250 × 2000)-?s switching impulses to model vacuum interrupters. Higher breakdown voltages are obtained in negative polarity than in positive polarity. The effective area of breakdown which takes the electric-field distribution on the anode surface into account is introduced to explain the polarity effect of breakdown voltage using Weibull statistics.  相似文献
