Ab initio total energy calculations within the framework of density functional theory have been performed for atomic hydrogen and oxygen chemisorption on the (0001) surface of double hexagonal packed americium using a full-potential all-electron linearized augmented plane wave plus local orbitals method. Chemisorption energies were optimized with respect to the distance of the adatom from the relaxed surface for three adsorption sites, namely top, bridge, and hollow hcp sites, the adlayer structure corresponding to coverage of a 0.25 monolayer in all cases. Chemisorption energies were computed at the scalar-relativistic level (no spin-orbit coupling NSOC) and at the fully relativistic level (with spin-orbit coupling SOC). The two-fold bridge adsorption site was found to be the most stable site for O at both the NSOC and SOC theoretical levels with chemisorption energies of 8.204 eV and 8.368 eV respectively, while the three-fold hollow hcp adsorption site was found to be the most stable site for H with chemisorption energies of 3.136 eV at the NSOC level and 3.217 eV at the SOC level. The respective distances of the H and O adatoms from the surface were found to be 1.196 ?and 1.164 ?. Overall our calculations indicate that chemisorption energies in cases with SOC are slightly more stable than the cases with NSOC in the 0.049–0.238 eV range. The work functions and net magnetic moments respectively increased and decreased in all cases compared with the corresponding quantities of bare dhcp Am (0001) surface. The partial charges inside the muffin-tins, difference charge density distributions, and the local density of states have been used to analyze the Am-adatom bond interactions in detail. The implications of chemisorption on Am 5f electron localization-delocalization are also discussed.  相似文献

The chemisorption of isocyanate (NCO) species on Pd(1 0 0) was studied within the density functional formalism (DFT) using a periodic slab model. The NCO was adsorbed on top, bridge and hollow sites of the metal surface at different coverages. At low coverages, the adsorption energies are in the range of ?2.5/?3.0 eV, indicating an important adsorbate–substrate interaction for the three sites studied. The lateral repulsive interaction between neighboring NCO species is almost negligible or weak at lower and intermediate coverages, and very strong at complete monolayer. At low coverages, both bridge and hollow sites are energetically preferred; yet the bridge site becomes the only favoured site at intermediate and complete coverages. Work function and dipole moment calculations can be interpreted by an important charge transfer from the metal surface to NCO. Interestingly, while on hollow site the charge taken by NCO is essentially the same over all the range of coverage, an increasing depolarization is observed on bridge and top sites as the coverage increases. Symmetric and asymmetric NCO stretching modes were also calculated and compared with recent infrared spectroscopy measurements.  相似文献

The coverage-dependent heats of adsorption and sticking probabilities in the interaction of nitric oxide with clean and oxygen pre-covered Ni{2 1 1} surfaces have been measured at 300 K using single crystal adsorption calorimetry. The results are consistent with a switch from dissociative to molecular chemisorption at 1 ML of O plus N adatoms. Initial dissociative adsorption is attributed to step sites with a heat of 400 kJ mol−1. When steps are saturated with adatoms, adsorption proceeds molecularly with a heat of 160 kJ mol−1. With 0.24 ML oxygen adatom pre-coverage, the initial heat is only 250 kJ mol−1 and with 0.6 ML oxygen adatom, NO adsorption is only molecular with an initial heat of 160 kJ mol−1. The NO sticking probability behaviour is consistent with this picture, with successive precursor mediated adsorption at step and terrace sites. The inhibition of dissociation above O, or O plus N, adatom coverages of 1 ML is attributed to the strong lateral repulsive interactions between adatoms, which would drive the dissociative heat of adsorption below that of molecular adsorption at higher coverages.  相似文献

The adsorption of 0.25, 0.5 and 1 monolayer (ML) of the transition metal Ni on the metal substrate Al(1 1 0) was studied using first-principles calculations at the level of density functional theory. The metal–metal system was analyzed with the generalized gradient approximation. Four stable atomic configurations were considered, and the optimized geometries and adsorption energies of different Ni adsorption sites on the Al(1 1 0) surface at selected levels of coverage were calculated and compared. The four-fold hollow site was determined to be the most stable adsorption site with adsorption energy of 5.101 eV at 0.25 ML, 3.874 eV at 0.5 ML and 3.665 eV at 1 ML. The adsorption energies of the four sites slightly decreased as the Ni coverage increased. Work function analysis showed that when Ni is adsorbed on the Al(1 1 0) surface, the work function decreased as the coverage increased due to depolarization. The Mulliken population and density of states were calculated to determine the charge distribution of the adsorption site, confirming that a chemisorption interaction exists between the adsorbed Ni atom and Al(1 1 0) surface atoms.  相似文献

We present the results of ab initio calculations of oxygen atomic adsorption in a wide range of coverage on Pt(1 1 1). At θ = 0.25 ML, the O adsorption at fcc hollow site is clearly favoured over the hcp site. At θ = 0.5 ML, the O adsorption energy decreases but the same site is favoured. When experimental or theoretical previously reported data are available, the calculated adsorption energies and site preferences are in good agreement. Among the various configurations and coverages investigated in the present work, no adsorption is stable beyond θ = 0.5 ML, except by occupation of a subsurface tetrahedral site. In that case, a total O coverage of 0.75 ML could be achieved, which is only slightly less stable than the θ = 0.5 ML configuration.

The use of thermodynamics permitted to explore the temperature–pressure stability domain corresponding to 0.25 ML, 0.5 ML and 0.75 ML. From this, we conclude that subsurface O species could be stable at temperatures lower than 700 K, with O2 pressures of 1 bar or less.  相似文献

To evaluate the interactions between the atoms of Au, Ag and Cu and clean Si(1 1 1) surface, two types of silicon clusters Si4H7 and Si16H20 together with their metal complexes were studied by using hybrid (U)B3LYP density functional theory method. Optimized geometries and energies on different adsorption sites indicate that: (1) the binding energies at different adsorption sites are large (ranging from 1.2 to 2.6 eV depend on the metal atoms and adsorption sites), suggesting a strong interaction between metal atom and silicon surface; (2) the most favorable adsorption site is the on top (T) site. Mulliken population analysis indicated that in the system of on top (T) site, a covalent bond is formed between metal atom and dangling bond of surface Si atom.  相似文献

The chemisorption of one monolayer Ag atoms on an ideal Si(1 0 0) surface is studied by using the self-consistent tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital method. The adsorption energies (Ead) of different sites are calculated. It is found that the adsorbed Ag atoms are more favorable on C site (fourfold site) than on any other sites on Si(1 0 0) surface, the polar covalent bond is formed between Ag atom and surface Si atom, a Ag and Si mixed layer does not exist and does form an abrupt interface at the Ag–Si(1 0 0) interface. This is in agreement with the experiment results. The layer-projected density of states is calculated and compared with that of the clean surface. The charge transfer is also investigated. Comparing with the Au/Si(1 0 0) system, the interaction is weaker between Ag and Si than between Au and Si.  相似文献

Molecular and dissociative oxygen adsorptions on the α-Pu (0 2 0) surface have been systematically studied using the full-potential linearized augmented-plane-wave plus local orbitals (FP-LAPW+lo) basis method and the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) exchange-correlation functional. Chemisorption energies have been optimized for the distance of the admolecule from the Pu surface and the bond length of O-O atoms for four adsorption sites and three approaches of O2 admolecule to the (0 2 0) surface. Chemisorption energies have been calculated at the scalar relativistic level with no spin-orbit coupling (NSOC) and at the fully relativistic level with spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Dissociative adsorptions are found at the two horizontal approaches (O2 is parallel to the surface and perpendicular/parallel to a lattice vector). Hor2 (O2 is parallel to the surface and perpendicular to a lattice vector) approach at the one-fold top site is the most stable adsorption site, with chemisorption energies of 8.048 and 8.415 eV for the NSOC and SOC cases, respectively, and an OO separation of 3.70 Å. Molecular adsorption occurs at the Vert (O2 is vertical to the surface) approach of each adsorption site. The calculated work functions and net spin magnetic moments, respectively, increase and decrease in all cases upon chemisorption compared to the clean surface. The partial charges inside the muffin-tins, the difference charge density distributions, and the local density of states have been used to investigate the Pu-admolecule electronic structures and bonding mechanisms.  相似文献

The adsorption of atomic S on the Fe(1 1 0) surface is examined using density functional theory (DFT). Three different adsorption sites are considered, including the atop, hollow and bridge sites and the S is adsorbed at a quarter monolayer coverage in a p(2 × 2) arrangement. The hollow site is found to be the most stable, followed by the bridge and atop sites. At all three sites, S adsorption results in relatively minor surface reconstruction, with the most significant being that for the hollow site, with lateral displacements of 0.09 Å. Comparisons between S-adsorbed and pure Fe surfaces revealed reductions in the magnetic moments of surface-layer Fe atoms in the vicinity of the S. At the hollow site, the presence of S causes an increase in the surface Fe d-orbital density of states between 4 and 5 eV. However, S adsorption has no significant effect on the structure and magnetic properties of the lower substrate layers.  相似文献

The adsorption of NO on single gold atoms and Au2 dimers deposited on regular O2− sites and neutral oxygen vacancies (Fs sites) of the MgO(1 0 0) surface have been studied by means of DFT calculations. For Au1/MgO the adsorption of NO is stronger when the Au atom is supported on an anionic site than when it is on a Fs site, with adsorption binding energies of 1.1 and 0.5 eV, respectively. In the first case the spin density is mainly concentrated on the metal atom and protruding from the surface. In such a way, an active site against radicals such as NO is generated. On the Fs site, the presence of the vacancy delocalizes the spin into the substrate, weakening its coupling with NO. For Au2/MgO, as this system has a closed-shell configuration, the NO molecules bonds weakly with Au2. Regarding the N–O stretching frequencies, a very strong shift of 340–400 cm−1 to lower frequencies is observed for Au1/MgO in comparison with free NO.  相似文献

The adsorption sites of coadsorbed K and CO on the Rh(111) surface have been determined using high-resolution core-level spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction and site-resolved photoelectron diffraction. For both a (2×2)-2CO–1K and a -6CO–1K structure, we find that the CO molecules occupy threefold hollow sites and the K atoms on-top sites, contrary to the adsorption sites of K (threefold hollow site) and CO (on-top site below 0.5 monolayers) if adsorbed alone on Rh(111). Deposition of K onto a CO precovered surface is found to induce large shifts towards lower binding energy of the C and O 1s core levels (0.7 eV for C 1s and 1.5 eV for O 1s). The major part of these shifts is shown to arise from the K-induced site change of the CO molecules. This finding may be of importance in the interpretation of XPS data of related co-adsorption systems. Finally, it is suggested that the C and O 1s binding energies provide useful fingerprints of the CO adsorption site also for co-adsorption systems.  相似文献

The interaction of CCl4 molecules with Fe(0 0 1) surfaces was investigated by spin-polarized ion scattering spectroscopy (SP-ISS). It was observed that CCl4 molecules adsorb dissociatively on the surface at ambient temperature (290 K), and consequently, iron and chlorine were major surface constituents. It was found that the chlorine adatoms are located atop of iron atoms of the second surface layer (hollow sites of the surface). It is indicated that the spin state of iron atoms at the surface is not affected by exposure to a CCl4 atmosphere, while almost no spin is induced in the chlorine adatoms. Similar behavior is observed in the spin states of iron and chlorine on an oxygen preadsorbed-Fe(0 0 1) surface. The difference in the spin states of iron and chlorine clarifies the local property of the incidence ion neutralization and element selectivity of SP-ISS in this CCl4/Fe system.  相似文献

The nature of the interaction of isocyanic acid (HNCO) with the active centers at the ideal anatase TiO2 (1 0 1) surface were studied using ab initio density functional theory (DFT) method with a cluster model. Two types of adsorption of isocyanic acid are found to be likely at (1 0 1) surface – dissociative and molecular adsorption. Only molecular adsorption of HNCO leads to the direct weakening and further splitting of the NC bond, which is a necessary step for the hydrolysis of isocyanic acid. During molecular adsorption of HNCO, an energetically stable intermediate surface complex is created with an adsorption energy of −1.33 eV, in which the HNCO skeleton is changing due to new strong bonds between C–Os and N–Tis. Based on the existence of this intermediate complex a probable reaction pathway for the hydrolysis of HNCO over the ideal anatase (1 0 1) surface was developed. A surface oxygen vacancy was formed after the decomposition of the intermediate complex and CO2 desorption. Afterwards, water adsorbs at the oxygen vacancy site and NH3 is successively formed. The HNCO hydrolysis over TiO2 was found to be energetically favorable with global energy gain of about −2.08 eV.  相似文献

A detailed study of the interaction of hydrogen and carbon monoxide with two different Rh(1 1 1)/V surface alloys (1/3 monolayer of V in the second atomic layer or 1/3 monolayer of V in form of islands on the surface) is presented in comparison to the clean Rh(1 1 1) surface. For hydrogen a decrease in the sticking coefficient is found for both alloy surfaces. The sticking coefficient of H2 as a function of the translational energy is similar to the Rh(1 1 1) surface, showing a direct activated adsorption mechanism. For low translational energies hydrogen adsorption is dominated by dynamical steering on Rh(1 1 1) and by a precursor mechanism on the Rh(1 1 1)/V subsurface alloy. The H2 TPD desorption peaks are shifted to lower temperatures on the alloy surfaces, caused by the downshift of the metal d-band due to V alloying. On all three surfaces the saturation coverage of hydrogen was measured, giving 1.2, 1.0 and 0.8 monolayer for Rh(1 1 1), the Rh(1 1 1)/V subsurface alloy and for the Rh(1 1 1)/V islands, respectively. For CO the sticking coefficients and the saturation coverages are basically the same on the Rh(1 1 1) and the alloy surfaces. There is an extrinsic precursor on the ordered CO (√3×√3) phase on the Rh(1 1 1) surface, but there is no evidence for such a precursor on the Rh(1 1 1)/V subsurface alloy. On the Rh(1 1 1)/V islands surface, the extrinsic precursor exists on the Rh(1 1 1) surface between the V islands. Apparently this precursor is only stable on the ordered CO layer on Rh(1 1 1).  相似文献

We have carried out first-principles calculation of Mg(0 0 0 1) free-standing thin films to study the oscillatory quantum size effect exhibited in the surface energy, work function, interlayer relaxation, and adsorption energy of the atomic hydrogen adsorbate. The quantum well states have been shown. The calculated energetics and interlayer relaxation of clean and H-adsorbed Mg films are clearly featured by quantum oscillations as a function of the thickness of the film, with oscillation period of about eight monolayers, consistent with recent experiments. The calculated quantum size effect in H adsorption can be verified by observing the dependence of H coverage on the thickness of Mg(0 0 0 1) thin films gown on Si(1 1 1) or W(1 1 0) substrate which has been experimentally accessible.  相似文献

Oxygen adsorptions on -Pu (100) and (111) surfaces have been studied at both non-spin-polarized and spin-polarized levels using the generalized gradient approximation of density functional theory (GGA-DFT) with Perdew and Wang (PW) functionals. The center position of the (100) surface is found to be the most favorable site with chemisorption energies of 7.386 eV and 7.080 eV at the two levels of theory. The distances of the oxygen adatom from the Pu surface are found to be 0.92 Å and 1.02 Å, respectively. For the (111) surface non-spin-polarized calculations, the center position is also the preferred site with a chemisorption energy of 7.070 eV and the distance of the adatom being 1.31 Å, but for spin-polarized calculations the bridge and the center sites are found to be basically degenerate, the difference in chemisorption energies being only 0.021 eV. In general, due to the adsorption of oxygen, plutonium 5f orbitals are pushed further below the Fermi energy, compared to the bare plutonium layers. The work function, in general, increases due to oxygen adsorption on plutonium surfaces.Received: 20 July 2004, Published online: 9 September 2004PACS: 71.15.-m Methods of electronic structure calculations - 71.15.Mb Density functional theory, local density approximation, gradient and other corrections - 71.15.Nc Total energy and cohesive energy calculations 71.27. + a Strongly correlated electron systems; heavy fermions  相似文献
