ACOUSTICAL NEWS

INTERNOISE 84 1984 International Conference on Noise Control Engineering was held on 3—5 decem-ber in Honolulu,450 people attended,with 300 papes,two—volume proceedings of 1426pages publisbed.This was an important meeting in the field of acoustics,Professor Zhao Song-ling and I attended,and there were also some overseas Chinese from Honolulu,Hong Kong,Singapore,Canada,etc.The Institutes of Noise Control Engineering(INCE)of U.S.A.and Japan were responsible for the organization,and they contributed some 100 papers each.The Thema of the Conference is International Cooperation for Noise Control.

The conference,held in Gdansk—Jastrzebia Gora,Poland on 19—21 May 1987,wassponsored by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physic——Commission on Acoustics,the Polish Academy of Sciences——Committee on Acoustics,the Polish Acoustical Society,andthe Polish Noise Abatement League.The University of Gdansk and the Technical University ofGdansk supported the activities of the Organizing Committee.The International AdvisoryCommittee consisting of 49 outstanding acoustichas helped in the preparations for the conference.Most of the Advisory Committee members took part in the conference.     

Book Review

The theme of the 1991 Noise Conference,NOISE-CON 91,held 14 -16,July,1991,in Tarrytown,NY,was"Noise Control:Twenty Years of Progress andfuture Trends",marking the twentieth anniversary of the Institute of Noise Con-trol Engineering(INCE/USA).The Proceedings contain all papers presented inthe Conference,among which five plenary lectures address the theme of the Confer-ence by reviewing the recent developments and some thoughts about the futuretrends,while the other eighty-some papers in ten organized sessions reflect the pro-gress in different fields to the arts and sciences of the reduction of sound and ofthe use of sound for diagnosis.

Stochastic resonance in linear system driven by multiplicative noise and additive quadratic noise

In this paper the stochastic resonance (SR) is studied in an overdamped linear system driven by multiplicative noise and additive quadratic noise. The exact expressions are obtained for the first two moments and the correlation function by using linear response and the properties of the dichotomous noise. SR phenomenon exhibits in the linear system. There are three different forms of SR: the bona fide SR, the conventional SR and SR in the broad sense. Moreover, the effect of the asymmetry of the multiplicative noise on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is different from that of the additive noise and the effect of multiplicative noise and additive noise on SNR is different.

STATUS OF COMMUNITY NOISE IN THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA

Noise surveys have been carried out in Beijing,Tianjin and in 22 smaller towns in the generalmetropolitan area.This region has a population of about 18 million.The results of these surveys give apicture of the situation of the community noise in a typical section of China and the change in the last tenyears,showing the effectiveness of various noise control measures,both technical and legal.     

Attending inter-noise 90

1990 International Congress on Noise Control Engineering convened on the cam-pus of Chalmers University of Technology,Gothenburg,Sweden,August 13-15,1990.The Conference was well attended by some 800 Participants,including nearly 20Chinese.Inter-noise 90 Conference includes 3 distinguished papers,40 session-openingpapers and 286 invited and contributed papers.The distinguished lectures were deliv-ered during the plenary sessions on three mornings.There were normally 8 sessionsrunning in parallel.The first morning and first afternoon paper of each session is a ses-sion opening lecture of 30 minutes each (25min.for presentation,2 min.for questionsand 2 min.pause to enable people to change sessions).All other papers are given 20minutes(15 min.for presentation,3 min.for questions and 2 min.break).31 compa-nies exhibited in the Conference building,representing the important acoustical instru-ment manufacturers and consulting firms in Europe.

Stochastic Resonance in a Single-Mode Laser Driven by Quadratic Colored Pump Noise： Effects of Biased Amplitude Modulation Signal

A single-mode laser noise model driven by quadratic colored pump noise and biased amplitude modulation signal is proposed. The analytic expression of signal-to-noise ratio is calculated by using a new linearized procedure. It is found that there are three different typies of stochastic resonance in the model： the conventional form of stochastic resonance, the stochastic resonance in the broad sense, and the bona fide SR.

THE COMPUTATION OF PARTIAL COHERENCE FUNCTION APPLIED FOR SOUND SOURCE IDENTIFICATION

In this paper,a new method is applied to get the computation formula of partial coherence function.The main attention is paid to the computation formula of the partial coherence function with three andfour signals.The advantages of the method discussed in the paper are clear in physical meaning and easyto compute at the end of the paper,the application of the method to the identification of an aircompressor noise source is presented and the results are satisfactory.

Effect of Asymmetric Potential and Gaussian Colored Noise on Stochastic Resonance

The phenomenon of stochastic resonance （SR） in a bistable nonlinear system is studied when the system is driven by the asymmetric potential and additive Gaussian colored noise. Using the unified colored noise approximation method, the additive Gaussian colored noise can be simplified to additive Gaussian white noise. The signal-to-noise ratio （SNR） is calculated according to the generalized two-state theory （shown in [H.S. Wio and S. Bouzat, Brazilian J.Phys. 29 （1999） 136]）. We find that the SNR increases with the proximity of a to zero. In addition, the correlation time T between the additive Gaussian colored noise is also an ingredient to improve SR. The shorter the correlation time T between the Gaussian additive colored noise is, the higher of the peak value of SNR.
