Near-field scattering of surface waves by a single surface-breaking crack in solid medium has been well investigated by prior researchers. However, there have been few studies for more realistic problems involving near scattering of surface waves by distributed surface-breaking cracks. One possible reason is complexity caused by the interaction of surface waves between multiple cracks. In this study, interaction of surface waves between two surface-breaking cracks with various crack spacing was investigated. The experimental study was performed on Plexiglas specimens with non-contact sensors (air-coupled sensors, and a laser vibrometer), and compared with numerical simulation results. The effects of crack depth h, spacing a, and the number of cracks N on surface wave transmission were studied. Analyses show that for the very small crack spacing (a/h<0.2), the distributed cracks can be regarded as a single surface-breaking crack. However, for a/h ranging between approximately 1 and 6, transmission coefficient of surface waves is significantly affected by interaction between cracks. The transmission coefficients have the lowest value when a/h is between 2 and 3. When a/h is large (a/h>6), transmission coefficients obtained from experiments, and numerical simulations agree with the theoretical results based on non-interaction crack assumption.

A theoretical model describing the nonlinear scattering of acoustic waves by surface-breaking cracks with faces in partial contact is presented. The nonlinear properties of the crack are accounted for by suitable boundary conditions that are derived from micromechanical models of the dynamics of elastic rough surfaces in contact. Both linear and nonlinear responses of the crack are shown to be largest for a shear vertical wave incident on the surface containing the crack at an angle just above the critical angle for longitudinal waves. These findings question the fitness for the purpose of a conventional inspection method, which utilizes shear vertical waves at 45 degrees of incidence to search for surface-breaking cracks in many engineering components. For angles of incidence proximal to the critical angle of longitudinal waves, the efficiency of the second harmonic's generation appears to be the highest. Thanks to the increased sensitivity to surface-breaking cracks, this configuration seems to offer a solution to the localization problem, a task that has eluded nonlinear techniques operating under other circumstances. Finally, this model suggests a simple interpretation of the highly localized nonlinear response of delaminations in composite materials.

A new effective field approach describing the attenuation and dispersion of a Rayleigh wave propagating on a surface containing a distribution of one-dimensional, surface-breaking cracks is presented. Limited by the validity of the independent scattering approximation, the model utilizes the complex transmission coefficient of a single crack to build expressions for the phase velocity and attenuation coefficient of an effective Rayleigh wave. The model is shown to be able to accommodate the effect of compressive residual stresses that tend to close the distributed cracks at their mouth, and therefore substantially reduce the attenuation and the velocity change caused by an equivalent distribution of open cracks. Wherever possible, the predictions of the new model are compared with those of other approaches and critical remarks are offered which discuss the advantages of the effective field approach over the others. Finally, an extension of this approach to distributions of two-dimensional surface-breaking cracks is outlined.

The interaction of surface acoustic waves with finite-size, surface-breaking, semi-circular cracks is studied numerically, and experimentally. We focus on the behavior of the reflection coefficient of the Rayleigh wave from such cracks in the far field of the crack, when the depth of the crack is comparable to the wavelength of the interrogating surface wave. The cases in which the depth of the crack is much smaller or much larger compared to the wavelength have been extensively investigated by many authors and are not considered here except for validating the numerical and experimental results in these regimes. The theoretical, finite element, and experimental results presented are in very good agreement over the range were the crack depth is much smaller or much larger compared to the wavelength of the incident Rayleigh wave. In the transition regime, between these two limiting cases, only the finite element and experimental data show good agreement since the theoretical predictions are no longer applicable. In the high crack depth to wavelength ratio (a/lambda(R)) regime, the finite element and experimental results close to the crack approach the limiting value of the reflection coefficient from a 90 degrees corner.

In this paper, a technique for measuring a surface wave transmission coefficient across surface-breaking cracks and notches in a heterogeneous but globally isotropic material (concrete) is presented. Once the transmission coefficient across a surface discontinuity is known, its depth may be estimated. There are many difficulties in measuring the transmission coefficient experimentally owing to effects of wave path dependence, unknown characteristics of the receiver and the wave source, and the variation of impact event or receiver coupling. To eliminate the undesired effects, a self-calibrating measurement scheme is applied to obtain the surface wave transmission coefficient across notches and surface-breaking cracks in concrete. The obtained signal transmission coefficient is not affected by the experimental setup or the heterogeneous nature of the material. The testing scheme is described and experimental results obtained from concrete specimens with notches and surface-breaking cracks are presented. Repeatable and reliable measurements of surface wave transmission coefficient are obtained, which demonstrate a strong relation to normalized discontinuity depth. A numerical study using the boundary element method is presented, which verifies the experimental findings.

Interaction of the fundamental shear horizontal mode with through-thickness cracks in an isotropic plate is studied in the context of low frequency array imaging for ultrasonic guided wave nondestructive evaluation with improved resolution. Circular wave fronts are used and the symmetric case where a line from the wave source bisects the crack face normally is considered. Finite element simulations are employed to obtain trends subject to analytical and experimental validation. The influence of the crack length and of the location of source and measurement positions on the specular reflection from the crack face is first examined. These studies show that low frequency short range scattering is strongly affected by diffraction phenomena, leading to focusing of energy by the crack in the backscatter direction. Study of the diffraction from the crack edges reveals contributions due to a direct diffraction at the edges and multiple reverberations across the crack length. A simple diffraction model is shown to adequately represent cracks up to moderate lengths, providing an easy means of estimating the far field of the waves. The presence of multiple diffraction components is quantitatively established and surface waves on the crack face are identified as equivalent to low frequency symmetric modes of rectangular ridge waveguides.

A review is given of both bulk and surface wave ultrasonic methods for the measurement of the depth of surface-breaking cracks. Research is considered which relates to techniques for measuring crack depth by studying the scattered pulse amplitude, by using time-of-flight methods, or by carrying out ultrasonic spectroscopic analysis. Measurement of the transit time of bulk waves appears most likely to provide simple and reliable depth measurement in the near future. Further work in the other two areas should also prove valuable. Some suggestions are made of promising directions for future research.

This paper presents calibration-free crack sizing techniques based on ultrasonic imaging. The techniques are intended for 2D (line) surface-breaking cracks with the size of the incident wavelength or greater. The probing wave mode is the anti-plane shear wave (SH-wave). Two methods are employed for the ultrasonic imaging. One is a synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT) and the other is a computed time-reversal focusing technique (TRFT). In this paper, those methods are modified so that crack tips are located directly from measured A-scope waveforms without any calibration experiments. The results are shown as a peak in the ultrasonic image created by the respective methods. Reasonable accuracies of the proposed techniques are demonstrated first for the sizing of slits with known depths. The techniques are applied thereafter to the sizing of fatigue cracks. Since fatigue cracks may not be open without an external load, ultrasonic measurements are taken with and without external loads. The results of the imaging show that the depths of open cracks can be estimated accurately. It is also shown that crack opening (closing) behavior can be deduced by observing appearance (disappearance) of the peak in the images indicating the crack tip.

This study proposes an analytical model for nonlinear vibrations in a cracked rectangular isotropic plate containing a single and two perpendicular internal cracks located at the center of the plate. The two cracks are in the form of continuous line with each parallel to one of the edges of the plate. The equation of motion for isotropic cracked plate, based on classical plate theory is modified to accommodate the effect of internal cracks using the Line Spring Model. Berger?s formulation for in-plane forces makes the model nonlinear. Galerkin?s method used with three different boundary conditions transforms the equation into time dependent modal functions. The natural frequencies of the cracked plate are calculated for various crack lengths in case of a single crack and for various crack length ratio for the two cracks. The effect of the location of the part through crack(s) along the thickness of the plate on natural frequencies is studied considering appropriate crack compliance coefficients. It is thus deduced that the natural frequencies are maximally affected when the crack(s) are internal crack(s) symmetric about the mid-plane of the plate and are minimally affected when the crack(s) are surface crack(s), for all the three boundary conditions considered. It is also shown that crack parallel to the longer side of the plate affect the vibration characteristics more as compared to crack parallel to the shorter side. Further the application of method of multiple scales gives the nonlinear amplitudes for different aspect ratios of the cracked plate. The analytical results obtained for surface crack(s) are also assessed with FEM results. The FEM formulation is carried out in ANSYS.
