Interfacial fracture stresses of carbon/carbon composites were measured by indentation methods. Two types of test methods, namely, single fiber push-out, and bundle fiber push-out tests were conducted. Both methods successfully gave fiber/matrix interface mechanical properties, especially debonding behavior. However, when the interface was strong, the single fiber push-out test encountered technical difficulty in processing the extremely thin specimen required to realize the fiber push out. On the other hand, the bundle fiber push-out test gave a good estimation of interfacial fracture stresses.  相似文献

Interfacial modification for carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polyarylacetylene (PAA) resin, a kind of non-polar, was investigated. The high carbon phenolic resin was used as coating to treat the surface of CF after oxidation. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) with force modulation mode was used to analyze the interphase of composite. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and mechanical properties of CF/PAA composites were also measured. It was found that the CF/PAA composites treated with oxidation and coating after oxidation had transition area between carbon fiber and PAA resin. The existence of transition area led to the improvement of interfacial performance of composites. Specially, the thickness and stiffness of interphase of composite treated with coating after oxidation were more suitable for CF/PAA composites. Thus, the composite treated with coating after oxidation had the highest value of ILSS and the best mechanical properties.  相似文献

Flexible epoxy resin was used as an interphase matrix to improve the transverse properties of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates. The use of flexible interphase is considered to act as the energy absorber and prevent the fiber/matrix interface cracking. The purposes of the present study are fabrication and characterization of CFRP laminates with flexible interphase. The effect of the flexible interphase on the damage tolerance of CFRP laminates was investigated. It was confirmed that transverse strength was improved and transverse crack progress was suppressed in the laminates with flexible interphase.  相似文献

In composites, debonding at the fiber–matrix interface and matrix cracking due to loading or residual stresses can effect the mechanical properties. Here three different architectures — 3-directional orthogonal, 3-directional 8-harness satin weave and 4-directional in-plane multidirectional composites — are investigated and their effective properties are determined for different volume fractions using unit cell modeling with appropriate periodic boundary conditions. A cohesive zone model (CZM) has been used to simulate the interfacial debonding, and an octahedral shear stress failure criterion is used for the matrix cracking. The debonding and matrix cracking have significant effect on the mechanical properties of the composite. As strain increases, debonding increases, which produces a significant reduction in all the moduli of the composite. In the presence of residual stresses, debonding and resulting deterioration in properties occurs at much lower strains. Debonding accompanied with matrix cracking leads to further deterioration in the properties. The interfacial strength has a significant effect on debonding initiation and mechanical properties in the absence of residual stresses, whereas, in the presence of residual stresses, there is no effect on mechanical properties. A comparison of predicted results with experimental results shows that, while the tensile moduli E 11, E 33and shear modulus G 12 match well, the predicted shear modulus G 13 is much lower.  相似文献

A robust finite element procedure for investigating damage evolution in short fiber reinforced polymeric composites under external loads is developed. This procedure is based on an axisymmetric unit cell composed of a fiber, surrounding interphase and bulk matrix. The hybrid interphase concept involves a degraded material phase, the extent of which is material and property dependent. One of the most significant features of the model relies on establishment of variable adhesion conditions between the primary material phases. The unit cell is discretized into linearly elastic elements for the fiber and the matrix and interface elements which allow debonding in the fiber–matrix interface. The interface elements fail according to critical stress and critical energy release rate criteria. The tension and shear aspects of failure are uncoupled, although the resulting nonlinear problem is solved implicitly utilizing quasi-static incremental loading conditions. Final failure resulting from saturation and breakage is modeled by the vanishing interface element technique. Details of the propagation of interface cracks and the initiation of debonds are also observed and discussed for various shapes of fiber end. Numerical results reveal an intense effect of the fiber-end geometry on the initial fiber–matrix de-cohesion. The present finite element procedures can generate meaningful results in the analysis of fiber-reinforced composites.  相似文献

Interfacial debonding behavior is studied for unidirectional fiber reinforced composites from both experimental and analytical viewpoints. A new type of two-dimensional unidirectional model composite is prepared using 10 boron fibers and transparent epoxy resin with two levels of interfacial strength. In situ observation of the internal mesoscopic fracture process is carried out using the single edge notched specimen under static loading. The matrix crack propagation, the interfacial debonding growth and the interaction between them are directly observed in detail. As a result, the interfacial debonding is clearly accelerated in specimens with weakly bonded fibers in comparison with those with strongly bonded fibers. Secondary, three-dimensional finite element analysis is carried out in order to reproduce the interfacial debonding behavior. The experimentally observed relation between the mesoscopic fracture process and the applied load is given as the boundary condition. We successfully evaluate the mode II interfacial debonding toughness and the effect of interfacial frictional shear stress on the apparent mode II energy release rate separately by employing the present model composite in combination with the finite element analysis. The true mode II interfacial debonding toughness for weaker interface is about 0.4 times as high as that for a stronger interface. The effect of the interfacial frictional shear stress on the apparent mode II energy release rate for the weak interface is about 0.07 times as high as that for the strong interface. The interfacial frictional shear stress and the coefficient of friction for weak interface are calculated as 0.25 and 0.4 times as high as those for strong interface, respectively.  相似文献

The dynamic mechanical thermal properties of carbon fiber-reinforced bismaleimide (BMI) composites processed using polyacrylonitrile(PAN)-based carbon fibers unsized and sized with LaRC PETI-5 amic acid oligomer as interphase material at 150°C, 250°C, and 350°C were investigated by means of dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. It was found that the storage modulus, loss modulus, tan δ and the peak temperature significantly depend on the sizing temperature as well as on the presence and absence of LaRC PETI-5 sizing interphase. The result showed that the carbon fiber/BMI composite sized at 150°C had the highest storage modulus at a measuring temperature of 250°C. The storage modulus decreased with increasing sizing temperature from 150°C to 350°C, being influenced by interdiffusion and co-reaction between the LaRC PETI-5 interphase and the BMI matrix resin. The present result is quite consistent with the interfacial result reported earlier in term of interfacial shear strength and interlaminar shear strength of carbon fiber/BMI composites. It is addressed that in the present composite system the sizing temperature of LaRC PETI-5 interphase critically influences not only the interfacial properties but also the dynamic mechanical thermal properties and its control is also important.  相似文献

Natural fiber reinforced renewable resource based laminated composites were prepared from biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and untreated or surface-treated pineapple leaf fibers (PALF) by compression molding using the film stacking method. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of surface treatment of PALF on the performance of the fiber-reinforced composites. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to aid in the analysis. The mechanical properties of the PLA laminated composites were improved significantly after chemical treatment. It was found that both silane- and alkali-treated fiber reinforced composites offered superior mechanical properties compared to untreated fiber reinforced composites. The effects of temperature on the viscoelastic properties of composites were studied by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). From the DMA results, incorporation of the PALF fibers resulted in a considerable increase of the storage modulus (stiffness) values. The heat defection temperature (HDT) of the PALF fiber reinforced PLA laminated composites was significantly higher than the HDT of the neat PLA resin. The differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) results suggest that surface treatment of PALF affects the crystallization properties of the PLA matrix. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to investigate the distribution of PLA within the fiber network. SEM photographs of fiber surface and fracture surfaces of composites clearly indicated the extent of fiber–matrix interface adhesion. It was found that the interfacial properties between the reinforcing PALF fibers and the surrounding matrix of the laminated composite are very important to the performance of the composite materials and PALF fibers are good candidates for the reinforcement fiber of high performance laminated biodegradable biocomposites.  相似文献

In this study, a flexible interphase than matrix resin is studied. The fabrication method of unidirectional CFRP laminates with flexible fiber/matrix interphase has been established. The influence of the flexible interphase thickness on the flexural modulus and strength are experimentally investigated. The influence on the vibration properties are also investigated. It has been concluded that the flexible interphase with the optimized thickness could improve both the static and dynamic properties.  相似文献

By means of three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) which is based upon the micro-mechanical model of fiber-reinforced composites, this paper selects representative volume elements and studies the effect of the five factors, namely, cooling rate, matrix elasticity modulus, fiber elasticity modulus, interphase elasticity modulus and fiber volume fraction, on the interphase thermal residual stress and its distribution law in epoxy resin NPEF-170/unidirectional glass fiber composites. The results indicate that thermal residual stress is mainly distributed on the fiber and the matrix of neighboring interphase; the thermal residual stress on the fiber and the matrix declines as the distance to the interphase layer grows; and it tends to zero at the distance of 1.5 times the radius of the fiber away from the interphase. The increase in any of the four factors, namely, cooling rate, matrix elasticity modulus, fiber elasticity modulus, and fiber volume fraction would trigger the rise of thermal residual stress in epoxy resin NPEF-170/unidirectional glass fiber composites. The additional flexible interphase layer can eliminate and transfer thermal residual stress effectively, whose effectiveness mainly depends on the difference between interphase elasticity modulus and fiber elasticity modulus.  相似文献

Three novel experimental techniques were employed in this work in order to investigate the influence of the interphase region in polymer–glass composites on the bulk material properties: (i) the microdroplet test is a single fibre test designed to characterize the fibre–matrix bond (interface region) and to determine the interfacial shear stress in composite material; (ii) the nano-indentation test, a novel nano-hardness technique with ability to produce an indent as low as a few nanometres was employed in order to measure nano-hardness of the fibre–matrix interphase region; and (iii) the nano-scratch test, used in conjunction with the nano-indentation test for measurement of the interphase region width. The microdroplet test (MDT) has been used to characterize the interfacial bond in fibrous composite materials. The specimen consists of a fibre with a drop of cured resin pulled while the drop is being supported by a platinum disc with a hole. A properly tested specimen fails at the droplet’s tip–fibre interface, revealing the ultimate interfacial shear strength. In this study, finite element analysis (FEA) of the MDT has been focused toward simulation of the fibre–matrix interphase region. The influence of several functional variations of the material properties across the interphase layer on the stress distribution at the droplet’s tip was analysed. The results showed that the variation of the interphase properties significantly affects the stress distribution at the fibre–droplet interface, and, therefore, the stress redistribution to composite material. These results led to further experimental investigation of the interphase region, in order to obtain the material properties essential for the interfacial stress analysis. The interphase region in dry and water aged polymer–glass composite materials was investigated by means of the nano-indentation and the nano-scratch techniques. The nano-indentation test involved indentation as small as 30 nm in depth, produced along a 14 μm path between the fibre and the matrix. The distinct properties of the interphase region were revealed by 2–3 indents in dry materials and up to 15 indents in water aged, degraded materials. These results indicated interdiffusion in water aged interphase regions. The nano-scratch test involves moving a sample while being in contact with a diamond tip. The nano-scratch test, used in conjunction with the nano-indentation test, accurately measured the width of the interphase region. The results showed that the harder interphase region dissolved into the softer interphase region (both regions being harder/stronger than the matrix) expanding its width after aging in water.  相似文献

Functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes were successfully deposited on carbon fibers using four different techniques including dip coating, hand layup, spray up and electrophoretic deposition (EPD). A uniform coating of nanotubes was achieved from EPD in comparison to other coating techniques. Later nanotube-coated fibers by EPD were introduced in epoxy resin to investigate interfacial mechanical properties of the developed hierarchical composites by vacuum bagging technique. The increases in flexural and interlaminar shear properties up to 15% and 18% were observed in composites containing nanotube-coated carbon fibers than composites with virgin carbon fibers, respectively. Microscopic observation revealed the proper impregnation of multiscale reinforcements, i.e., carbon fibers and carbon nanotubes, in resin along with the modification of fiber/matrix interface due to the presence of nanotubes at interface. Finally, the mechanisms for improved mechanical properties were identified along with the presentation of a schematic model for better understanding of the improved performance of hierarchical composite after depositing uniformly dispersed nanotubes on carbon fibers.  相似文献

Adequate stress transfer between the inorganic reinforcement and surrounding polymeric matrix is essential for achieving enhanced structural integrity and extended lifetime performance of fiber-reinforced composites. The insertion of an elastomeric interlayer helps increase the stress-transfer capabilities across the fiber/matrix interface and considerably reduces crack initiation phenomena at the fiber ends. In this study, admicellar polymerization is used to modify the fiber/matrix interface in glass woven fabric composites by forming thickness-controlled poly(styrene-co-isoprene) coatings. These admicellar interphases have distinct characteristics (e.g. topology and surface coverage) depending on the surfactant/monomer ratios used during the polymerization reaction. Overall, the admicellar coatings have a positive effect on the mechanical response of resin transfer molded, E-glass/epoxy parts. For instance, ultimate tensile strength of composites with admicellar sizings improved 50–55% over the control-desized samples. Interlaminar shear strength also showed increases ranging from 18 to 38% over the same control group. Interestingly, the flexural properties of these composites proved sensitive to the type of interphase formed for various admicellar polymerization conditions. Higher surface coverage and film connectedness in admicellar polymeric sizings are observed to enhance stress transfer at the interfacial region.  相似文献

Cellulosic fibers have been used as cost-cutting fillers in plastic industry. Among the various factors, the final performance of the composite materials depends to a large extent on the adhesion between the polymer matrix and the reinforcement and therefore on the quality of the interface. To achieve optimum performance of the end product, sufficient interaction between the matrix resin and the cellulosic material is desired. This is often achieved by surface modification of the resin or the filler. Banana fiber, the cellulosic fibers obtained from the pseudo-stem of banana plant (Musa sepientum) is a bast fiber with relatively good mechanical properties. The fiber surface was modified chemically to bring about improved interfacial interaction between the fiber and the polyester matrix. Various silanes and alkali were used to modify the fiber surface. Modified surfaces were characterized by SEM and FTIR. The polarity parameters of the chemically modified fibers were investigated using the solvatochromic technique. The results were further confirmed by electrokinetic measurements. Chemical modification was found to have a profound effect on the fiber–matrix interactions. The improved fiber–matrix interaction is evident from the enhanced tensile and flexural properties. The lower impact properties of the treated composites compared to the untreated composites further point to the improved fiber–matrix adhesion. In order to know more about the fiber–matrix adhesion, fractured surfaces of the failed composites where further investigated by SEM. Of the various chemical treatments, simple alkali treatment with NaOH of 1% concentration was found to be the most effective. The fiber–matrix interactions were found to be dependent on the polarity of the modified fiber surface.  相似文献

The stress transfer ability at the fiber–matrix interface of wood fiber composites is known to affect the mechanical properties of the composite. The evaluation of interface properties at the level of individual fibers is however difficult due to the small dimensions and variability of the fibers. The dynamical mechanical properties of composite and constituents, in this case wood fibers and polylactide matrix, was here used together with micromechanical modeling to quantify the stress transfer efficiency at the fiber–matrix interface. To illustrate the methodology, a parameter quantifying the degree of imperfection at the interface was identified by inverse modeling using a micromechanical viscoelastic general self-consistent model with an imperfect interface together with laminate analogy on the composite level. The effect of moisture was assessed by comparison with experimental data from dynamic mechanical analysis in dry and moist state. For the wood fiber reinforced polylactide, the model shows that moisture absorption led to softening and mechanical dissipation in the hydrophilic wood fibers and biothermoplastic matrix, rather than loss of interfacial stress transfer ability.  相似文献

Several times, preferred properties are not accomplished when the fiber-reinforced composites are tested after they are prepared and the similar observations are also observed in the case of nanoparticle-reinforced composites. While the composites are manufactured under controlled conditions with stringent quality measures, it is complex to circumvent fiber-matrix interfacial debonding. The amount of debonding decides the final mechanical properties of composite material. In this study, an effort is made to quantify the debonding effect of nanoparticles on mechanical properties of nanoparticle-filled composites using finite element models with homogenization approach. Buckminster fullerene and conventional fiber T300 are selected as reinforcement medium. The predictions revealed that the longitudinal Young’s modulus is not affected by debonding.  相似文献

A calculation method based on the shear lag approach was presented to get an approximate estimate of influences of residual stresses and frictional shear stress at the debonded interface on the interfacial debonding behavior at the notch-tip along fiber direction in two-dimensional unidirectional double-edge-notched composites. With this method, the energy release rate for initiation and growth of debonding as a function of composite stress were calculated for some examples. The calculation results showed in outline how much the tensile and compressive residual stresses in the matrix and fiber along fiber direction, respectively, act to hasten the initiation and growth of the debonding when the final cut element in the notch is matrix, while they act to retard them when the final cut element is fiber, and how much the frictional shear stress at the debonded interface reduces the growth rate of the debonding.  相似文献

In order to study the mechanical properties and the progressive failure process of composite under shear loading, a representative volume element (RVE) of fiber random distribution was established, with two dominant damage mechanisms – matrix plastic deformation and interfacial debonding – included in the simulation by the extended Drucker–Prager model and cohesive zone model, respectively. Also, a temperature-dependent RVE has been set up to analyze the influence of thermal residual stress. The simulation results clearly reveal the damage process of the composites and the interactions of different damage mechanisms. It can be concluded that the in-plane shear fracture initiates as interfacial debonding and evolves as a result of interactions between interfacial debonding and matrix plastic deformation. The progressive damage process and final failure mode of in-plane shear model which are based on constitute are very consistent with the observed result under scanning electron microscopy of V-notched rail shear test. Also, a transverse shear model was established as contrast in order to comprehensively understand the mechanical properties of composite materials under shear loading, and the progressive damage process and final failure mode of composite under transverse shear loading were researched. Thermal residual stress changes the damage initiation locations and damage evolution path and causes significant decreases in the strength and fracture strain.  相似文献

The interface region in a given composite has a great deal of importance in determining the ultimate properties of the composite. An interface is, by definition, a bidimensional region through which there occurs a discontinuity in one or more material parameters. In practice, there is always some volume associated with the interface region over which a gradual transition in material parameter(s) occurs. The importance of the interface region in composites stems from two main reasons: (i) the interface occupies a very large area in composites, and (ii) in general, the reinforcement and the metal matrix will form a system that is not in thermodynamic equilibrium. One can discuss the interface in a composite at various levels. An optimum one should be neither so simple that it covers only a few special cases nor so complex that it is not useful in designing composites from processing and applications points of view. In this paper, my objective is to give examples of interface microstructure in different metal matrix composite systems and suggest some ways of controlling the interface characteristics in order to control the properties of the composite. I shall give examples of the interface microstructure in different metal matrix composites (particle and fiber reinforced as well as laminates) and discuss some of the important implications on various aspects of metal matrix composites, from the processing stage to ultimate performance of the composite.  相似文献

The presented paper deals with a unidirectional steel wire reinforced aluminum matrix composite manufactured by composite extrusion. The main objective of this work was to determine the effect of heat treatment, and the influence of long solution annealing times on the composites interface regarding microstructural changes and the resulting interface strength. For evaluation of the microstructure high resolution transmission electron microscope (TEM) investigations accompanied with electron dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were performed. It could be shown that diffusion from the steel wire into the aluminum matrix occurs and that the diffusion paths as well as particle formation is influenced by the preceded heat treatment. Diffusion paths in the range of 40–150 nm could be observed for Al, Fe, Cr and Ni. After annealing times over 5 h an extensive growth of an intermetallic reaction layer was found. The mechanical properties of the interface were determined by push-out-tests and tensile tests radial to the interface, which provided the debonding shear strength σdeb and for the latter experiment the interfacial radial strength σIR. It has become apparent that debonding shear strength is highly influenced by matrix properties. In radial tensile tests the failure is predominantly controlled by the chemical bond of the interface. It was shown that interface strength of specimen with small reaction zones of about 3 μm were beneficial for the mechanical behavior in both loading conditions. Longer annealing times showed a drastic decrease of interface shear strength. It was concluded from EDX measurements and in comparison with literature that the reaction zone is dominated by the growth of Al5Fe2 (η-phase).  相似文献
