Single crystals of BaTiO3, containing one 90° domain wall, were used to study the origin and character of the movement of such a wall in an alternating electric field having a frequency of 50 c/s. The experimental results are discussed from the phenomenological point of view.

A survey is given of the results of measuring the radioactivity of rain-out from 1. 11. 1956 to 1. 2. 1960 and of fall-out from 1. 11. 1958 to 1. 2. 1960.The temporary cessation of nuclear weapon tests from 1. 11. 1958 became apparent in the second half-year after the cessation (from 1. 5 to 31. 10. 1959) by a decrease in the cumulative activity to 45% of the value for the first half-year (from 1. 11. 1958 to 30. 4. 1959). At the end of 1959 another decrease was apparent.It was shown on the basis of long-term investigation into the activity that the samples of fall-out with greater activity contain relatively very little admixture from earlier nuclear tests so that in the period of a few weeks to months the sets of fission products may be regarded as practically isolated. The exponentn in the relationA=at –n is most frequently 1.2 for the period of the first four mounths and for older samples is most oftenn=1.5. The energy of the beta and gamma rays from fall-out was estimated on the basis of absorption measurements. It was shown that the quality of the beta radiation varies with the age of the samples.A brief survey is given of the results of determining the Sr 90 content in fall-out and milk, and of the methods of physical evidence of Sr 90 used.

Energy levels and electromagnetic properties of fluorin isotopes in the Nilsson's model with Coriolis mixing are investigated. Position of the F19 levels is satisfactorily explained up to the energy of 4·5 MeV. Concerning the F21 it seems that the shell model will better correspond to the F21 nucleus.

The losses caused by bremsstahlung during electron-ion and electron-electron collisions in a completely ionized plasma (in Born's approximation) are calculated. The calculation can be carried out analytically for a sufficiently dilute plasma (plasma with infinitely large Debay-Hückel radius). This assumption is satisfied very well by the known classification to actual controlled thermonuclear reaction. A dependence of the formI=an 2. (1+3/2), wherea=0·73×10–16 MeV.cm3.sec–1,n is the number of ions per cm3 and =kT/mc 2, is determined for the amount of energy radiated from 1 cm3 of plasma per sec. In the relativistic temperature regionkTmc 2 the influence of electron-electron collisions begins to predominate. A number of important results concerning radiation losses in relativistic plasma will be published in a later paper.

The mutual interaction of two colliding plasma streams is investigated by means of the perturbation method. The disordered random motions of electrons are taken into account. It is shown that electron oscillations occur only when certain conditions as to the density and relative velocity of the colliding streams are fulfilled. The order of magnitude of the thickness of the shock generated by the initial relative motion is estimated on various assumptions.

Gamma lines 1·05 MeV(4 × 10–6 quanta/decay) and 1·14 MeV (9 × 10–6 quanta/decay), giving evidence of the existence of a new level in Hf176 with an energy of 1·14 MeV, were found in the decay of Lu176m with a half-life of 3·7 hours, using the scintillation method. The component of the beta spectrum, exciting this level, has a maximum energy of 0·17 MeV and logft=8·3. The spin of this level proved to be equal to one. The level was interpreted as a single-particle neutron level withn 0: 5/2 (512),n 1: 7/2 (514);I=1+.

Compact analytical expressions for the dispersion laws of heavy- and light-hole zones are obtained on the 100 and 111 axes with spin-orbital interactions taken into account between the valence bands 25v and the conduction bands 15c. An unstable perminvar effect was found in magnesium manganese ferrite at a temperature of –195°C and its connection with the magnetic after-effect was investigated. The analysis carried out on the basis of Néel's theory showed that both effects are a result of the same diffusion process. The experimental results also show that 180° Bloch walls are displaced when the sample is magnetized.
