We investigate the dynamics of heavy ion beams at high phase-space densities. We are especially interested in intrabeam scattering driven emittance growth. The emittance growth rate is related to a relaxation rate, which we extracted from molecular dynamics computer simulations. Large deviations from theoretical predictions occur in the case of strong coupling. We investigate intrabeam scattering in strongly coupled beams of charged particles passing through quadrupole channels and deflection magnets. Particular attention is paid to the problem, which longitudinal cooling is necessary to overcome the shearing forces in the bending magnets which oppose the formation of ordered particle beams in storage rings. We have observed a sudden disappearance of intrabeam scattering in a laser cooled stored 9Be+ beam at the Heidelberg Test Storage Ring. The transition takes place at about 106 ions corresponding to a mean ion distance of ≃50c μm. The disappearance of IBS is accompanied by a decrease of the longitudinal temperature by more than two orders of magnitude. At the same time, the transverse width of the ion beam shows an increase which is limited to the diameter of the laser beam. Experimental signatures of this anomalous beam behaviour are described, and possible interpretations are discussed. The BETACOOL program, developed by electron cooling group of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), is a set of algorithms based on common format of input and output files. The program is oriented toward simulation of the ion beam dynamics in a storage ring in the presence of cooling and heating effects. The version presented in this report includes three basic algorithms: simulation of root-mean-square (rms) parameters of the particle distribution function evolving in time, simulation of the distribution function evolution using the Monte Carlo method, and a tracking algorithm based on a molecular dynamics technique. The general processes investigated with the program are intrabeam scattering in the ion beam, electron cooling, and interaction with residual gas and an internal target.  相似文献

Electron beams with the lowest, normalized transverse emittance recorded so far were produced and confirmed in single-bunch-mode operation of the Accelerator Test Facility at KEK. We established a tuning method of the damping ring which achieves a small vertical dispersion and small x-y orbit coupling. The vertical emittance was less than 1% of the horizontal emittance. At the zero-intensity limit, the vertical normalized emittance was less than 2.8 x 10(-8) rad m at beam energy 1.3 GeV. At high intensity, strong effects of intrabeam scattering were observed, which had been expected in view of the extremely high particle density due to the small transverse emittance.  相似文献

We report on an experiment in which a negative hydrogen ion beam in the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) linear accelerator was replaced with a beam of protons with similar size and dynamics. Fractional beam loss in the superconducting part of the SNS accelerator was measured to be at least 2×10(-5) for the H(-) beam, and it was an order of magnitude lower for the protons. Also beam loss has a stronger dependence on intensity with H(-) than with proton beams. These measurements verify a recent theoretical explanation of unexpected beam losses in the SNS superconducting linear accelerator based on an intrabeam stripping mechanism for negative hydrogen ions. This previously unidentified mechanism for beam loss is important for the design of new high current linear ion accelerators and the performance improvement of existing machines.  相似文献

High-and low-frequency convective instabilities of an ion beam in a longitudinal magnetic field in the presence of the gas entering the ion transportation channel from the plasma source are studied theoretically. Spatial growth rates of the beam instabilities are found and mechanisms for the nonlinear saturation of potential oscillations are investigated in the hydrodynamic approximation. The averaged (over the oscillation period) effective beam emittance associated with collective fast-ion heating is determined. The results obtained can be applied to calculating the dynamics of negative ion beams in the injectors of linear and cyclic accelerators.  相似文献

A review of processes that occur in high energy heavy ion acceleration by synchrotrons and colliders and that are essential for the accelerator performance is presented. Interactions of ions with the residual gas molecules/atoms and with stripping foils that deliberately intercept the ion trajectories are described in details. These interactions limit both the beam intensity and the beam quality. The processes of electron loss and capture lie at the root of heavy ion charge exchange injection. The review pays special attention to the ion induced vacuum pressure instability which is one of the main factors limiting the beam intensity. The intrabeam scattering phenomena which restricts the average luminosity of ion colliders is discussed. Some processes in nuclear interactions of ultra-relativistic heavy ions that could be dangerous for the performance of ion colliders are represented in the last chapter. For high luminosity in electron-positron linear colliders, it is essential to generate low vertical emittance beams. We report on the smallest vertical emittance achieved in single-bunch-mode operation of the Accelerator Test Facility, which satisfies the requirement of the x-band linear collider. The emittances were measured with a laser-wire beam-profile monitor installed in the damping ring. The bunch length and the momentum spread of the beam were also recorded under the same conditions. The smallest vertical rms emittance measured at low intensity is 4 pm at a beam energy of 1.3 GeV, which corresponds to the normalized emittance of 1.0x1.0(-8) m. It increases by a factor of 1.5 for a bunch intensity of 10(10) electrons. The measured data agreed to the calculation of intrabeam scattering within much better than a factor of 2.  相似文献

A preparation scheme for a 7Li+ ion beam in a storage ring is presented which provides ions in the metastable triplet states with well controlled longitudinal phase space properties. For both state selective preparation and beam cooling, laser- and electron-cooler forces are applied. The spatial- and momentum distributions of the ions are directly detected by a time resolved measurement of the fluorescence light. At low beam intensities, the remaining heating rate of such a beam is completely determined by residual gas scattering. 模拟研究了非理想氢原子束在真空环境下的长程传输效应。根据中性化程度的不同,将非理想束分为欠中性束和过中性束。通过建立束流传输的准电磁模型,研究了束流密度、中性化因子、空间磁场和弹性散射等因素对非理想氢原子束的影响。结果表明:对于欠中性束,负氢离子的存在对氢原子的传输几乎没有影响,因此欠中性束的发射装置可以考虑去除偏置磁场,以减小设备体积和质量;对于过中性束,束流损失率与束流密度和中性化因子有关,即束流密度越大,束流损失越大;中性化因子越高,束流损失就越高;而无论是欠中性束还是过中性束,空间磁场和粒子间的弹性散射对其传输都没有影响。  相似文献

Behaviour of a relativistic electron bunch, injected and trapped in a high intensity optical lattice resulting from the interference of two laser beams is studied. The optical lattice modifies the phase space distribution of the electron bunch due to the trapping and compression of the electrons by a ponderomotive force. High-frequency longitudinal beam eigenmodes of the trapped electron bunch are described in the framework of fluid and kinetic models. Such beam oscillations are expected to play a pivotal role in a stimulated Raman scattering of laser beams on the electrons.  相似文献

无衍射光束球散射性质的研究目前一般采用贝塞尔光束,但是贝塞尔光束在物理上是不可实现的。贝塞尔高斯光束作为近似无衍射光束,是亥姆霍兹方程在傍轴条件下的解,并且可以用激光振荡器直接产生,但其光束宽是有限的。应用傅里叶变换,平面波谱展开和球面矢量波函数展开法,推导了非偏振贝塞尔高斯光束的球散射远场的无量纲散射函数。通过数值模拟,对非偏振的贝塞尔高斯光束与贝塞尔光束,高斯光束的球散射远场进行了比较,比较发现:当球散射体偏离光轴时,非偏振贝塞尔高斯光束跟贝塞尔光束散射远场的差异主要是散射强度的差异,但是散射极点所在的方向基本保持不变;贝塞尔高斯光束和贝塞尔光束的散射在光束圆锥角方向上比较显著,但高斯光束的前向散射比较显著。  相似文献

本文在Bjorken和Mtingwa束内散射理论的基础上进一步推导出了束内散射率的普遍表达式,并将该表达式应用于HIRFL—CSR的磁铁结构(lattice),计算并得到了束流横向发射度和纵向动量散度随时间变化的规律,结果表明,束内散射不会成为CSRlattice设计的障碍.  相似文献

Inertial confinement fusion using light ion beams that require longitudinal bunching imply ions whose energy increases with time. Such profiling of the incident ion beam energy could be expected to result in improved yields and better hydrodynamic coupling. This paper presents a theoretical investigation of the propagation characteristics of a q‐Gaussian laser beam propagating through a plasma channel created by the ignitor‐heater technique. The ignitor beam creates the plasma by tunnel‐ionization of air. The heater beam heats the plasma electrons and establishes a parabolic channel. The third beam (q‐Gaussian beam) is guided in the plasma channel under the combined effects of density non‐uniformity and non‐uniform ohmic heating of the plasma channel. Numerical solutions of the non‐linear Schrodinger wave equation (NSWE) for the fields of laser beams are obtained with the help of the moment theory approach. Particular emphasis is placed on the dynamical variations of the spot size of the laser beams and the longitudinal phase shift of the guided beam with the distance of propagation.  相似文献

Electron cooling is used for improving the parameters of ion beams. The cooling efficiency depends drastically on the space charge fluctuation intensity in the beam. The fluctuations present in the cooling region cause the stochastic heating of the ions, which adversely affects the cooling efficiency and may even annihilate the ion beam. The space charge fluctuation intensity as a function of various operating parameters of a cooler is studied experimentally. A mechanism of fluctuation generation is suggested, and the effect of fluctuations on the ion beam parameters is estimated.  相似文献

可通过楔形装置把离子束(质子和重离子)纵向上的的深度剂量分布转换成横向上的剂量分布,进行离子束射程的快速测量及验证。本工作通过基于GEANT4内核的GATE蒙特卡罗模拟平台,模拟计算了不同能量碳离子束在用于制作楔形装置的铜、铝、铁和有机玻璃等材料中的深度剂量分布,得到不同能量碳离子束在不同材料中Bragg峰位所处深度与能量之间的关系;模拟计算了不同能量碳离子束穿越单楔板、双楔板和大小组合楔板等楔形装置后横向上的剂量分布,得到了横向剂量峰值出现位置与碳离子束射程之间的关系。本文蒙特卡罗模拟研究为进一步开发重离子治疗当中的射程快速验证方法与设备奠定了坚实的基础。  相似文献

Laser cooling of Li-like C~(3+)and O~(4+)relativistic heavy ion beams is planned at the experimental Cooler Storage Ring(CSRe). Recently, a preparatory experiment to test important prerequisites for laser cooling of relativistic~(12)C~(3+)ion beams using a pulsed laser system has been performed at the CSRe. Unfortunately, the interaction between the ions and the pulsed laser cannot be detected. In order to study the laser cooling process and find the optimized parameters for future laser cooling experiments, a multi-particle tracking method has been developed to simulate the detailed longitudinal dynamics of laser-cooled ion beams at the CSRe. Simulations of laser cooling of the~(12)C~(3+)ion beams by scanning the frequency of the RF-buncher or continuous wave(CW) laser wavelength have been performed. The simulation results indicate that ion beams with a large momentum spread could be laser-cooled by the combination of only one CW laser and the RF-buncher, and show the requirements of a successful laser cooling experiment. The optimized parameters for scanning the RF-buncher frequency or laser frequency have been obtained.Furthermore, the heating effects have been estimated for laser cooling at the CSRe. The Schottky noise spectra of longitudinally modulated and laser-cooled ion beams have been simulated to fully explain and anticipate the experimental results. The combination of Schottky spectra from the highly sensitive resonant Schottky pick-up and the simulation methods developed in this paper will be helpful to investigate the longitudinal dynamics of RF-bunched and ultra-cold ion beams in the upcoming laser cooling experiments at the CSRe.  相似文献
