A general criterion for bistability of transmissive devices, either of electronical or optical nature, is described and its applicability to dispersive optical bistability is demonstrated. Subsequently an electric equivalent circuit for dispersive optical bistability is proposed. A numerical analysis shows clearly bistable behaviour of the circuit.  相似文献

We theoretically investigate the Doppler effect on optical bistability in an N-type active Raman gain atomic system inside an optical ring cavity.It is shown that the Doppler effect can greatly enhance the dispersion and thus create the bistable behaviour or greatly increase the bistable region,which has been known as the positive Doppler effect on optical bistability.In addition,we find that a positive Doppler effect can change optical bistability from the hybrid dispersion-gain type to a dispersive type.  相似文献

It is shown that photorefractive wave-mixing gives saturable gain, saturable absorption and Kerr-like nonlinear phase retardation. An analogy between photorefractive two-beam coupling and two-level atom system is then drawn. We investigate optical bistability in a ring cavity, utilizing these phenomena, and compare our results with classical absorptive and dispersive optical bistability.  相似文献

We report on Kerr nonlinearity and dispersive optical bistability of a Fabry-Perot optical resonator due to the displacement of ultracold atoms trapped within. In the driven resonator, such collective motion is induced by optical forces acting upon up to 10(5) 87Rb atoms prepared in the lowest band of a one-dimensional intracavity optical lattice. The longevity of atomic motional coherence allows for strongly nonlinear optics at extremely low cavity photon numbers, as demonstrated by the observation of both branches of optical bistability at photon numbers below unity.  相似文献

Recent progress in the study of both absorptive and dispersive bistability in semiconductor injection lasers is reported. Inhomogeneously excited semiconductor lasers as an absorptive case, and laser diode optical amplifiers and optical injection locking systems of laser diodes as dispersive cases, are described. Applications of bistable semiconductor lasers, such as optical memories, optical regenerative amplifiers and all-optical switching, are also discussed.  相似文献

The influence of an external dispersive resonator on the emission properties of a double heterostructure semiconductor laser operating at room temperature has been investigated. The proper design of the external resonator (frequency selectivity and efficient back-coupling of the radiation leaving the diode) demonstrates that a laser with optical feedback can show bistability and hysteresis phenomena. The dispersive bistability has its origin in the dependence of the refractive index on carrier density, temperature and optical power. Hysteresis curves have been measured by changing the injection current or by tuning the dispersive element. We have found a threshold in the injection current for the onset of the hysteretic behaviour. Moreover, a theoretical model has been established to explain the essential features of the experimental results. Hysteresis cycles for different experiments have been calculated.  相似文献

Thermally induced optical bistability of thin CdS platelets is shown to be a highly suitable model case for the study of interactions between absorptive and dispersive switching mechanisms. Beyond previous studies concerning this type of bistability, systematic investigations were necessary to obtain a set of optimization criteria concerning a desired hysteresis feature. Despite the fact that thermally induced bistability of CdS may exhibit too long switching times for application in optoelectronics, it is a valuable system for the investigation of general features of bistable processes in a very detailed manner and for the development of reliable quantitative models. The appearance of different forms of thermally induced optical bistability in CdS is discussed in dependence of switching power, temperature, shallow-impurity concentration, and of system as well as of sample configuration.  相似文献

We analyze the stability of the stationary solutions of dispersive optical bistability in a ring cavity for a homogeneously broadened atomic system. The analysis is performed in the limit αL ? 1, with C = αL2T fixed. It is shown that in the dispersive case one can yield instability also when bistability is absent. This feature suggests that the dispersive case is more suitable than the purely absorptive one with respect to the observation of the self-pulsing behavior.  相似文献
