We discuss two different approaches for tuning the giant spin-orbit splitting of a BiAg2 surface alloy. The first approach consists of electron doping by alkaline metal deposition in order to shift the energy position of the spin-split surface states, while the second is based on the novel Si(1 1 1)-Ag-BiAg2 trilayer system. In both cases the spin-polarized structure near the Fermi level can be controlled by an external parameter, while the second approach permits coupling the concept of giant spin-splitting with a semiconducting substrate.  相似文献

Scanning tunnelling microscopy and current imaging tunnelling spectroscopy were used to study the topographic and electronic structure of a reduced TiO2(1 0 0) surface. The STM results showed that the TiO2(1 0 0) surface is capable to form (1 × 7) reconstruction which can transform to (1 × 3) reconstruction due to reoxidation of the surface. The CITS results showed that the (1 × 7) reconstruction is much more metallic in compared to the (1 × 3) reconstruction showing pronounced surface states at energy 1.3 eV and 0.8 eV below the Fermi level and at energy 1.0-1.2 eV above the Fermi level.  相似文献

We present the growth morphology, the long-range ordering, and the evolution of the valence band electronic states of ultrathin films of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) deposited on the Au(1 1 0)-(1 × 2) reconstructed surface, as a function of the organic molecule coverage. The low energy electron diffraction patterns present a (5 × 3) reconstruction from the early adsorption stages. High-resolution UV photoelectron spectroscopy data show the disappearance of the Au surface states related to the (1 × 2) reconstruction, and the presence of new electronic features related to the molecule-substrate interaction and to the CuPc molecular states. The CuPc highest occupied molecular orbital gradually emerges in the valence band, while the interface electronic states are quenched, upon increasing the coverage.  相似文献

Recent advances in both the experimental resolution and in the computational capabilities motivate new studies of surface properties. In particular, a detailed comparison between theoretical and experimental data is expected to provide a better insight into surface and image states. In this work we present a joint effort analyzing such features of the Cu(1 1 1) and Cu(0 0 1) surfaces. The experiments are performed by using both linear and non-linear angle-resolved photoemission. From the theoretical point of view, we make use of the Green function embedding technique within density functional theory. We are able to account for the image states by suitably modifying the effective potential in the Kohn-Sham equation and the generalized boundary conditions on the Green function. Comprehensive theoretical and experimental results on the effective mass and the binding energy of the Shockley state and the first image states are reported.  相似文献

We have studied adsorption of CO on Fe3O4(1 1 1) films grown on a Pt(1 1 1) substrate by temperature programmed desorption (TPD), infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). Three adsorption states are observed, from which CO desorbs at ∼110, 180, and 230 K. CO adsorbed in these states exhibits stretching frequencies at ∼2115-2140, 2080 and 2207 cm−1, respectively. The adsorption results are discussed in terms of different structural models previously reported. We suggest that the Fe3O4(1 1 1) surface is terminated by 1/2 ML of iron, with an outermost 1/4 ML consisting of octahedral Fe2+ cations situated above an 1/4 ML of tetrahedral Fe3+ ions, in agreement with previous theoretical calculations. The most strongly bound CO is assigned to adsorption to Fe3+ cations present on the step edges.  相似文献

Low-energy (0.4-1.2 eV) electron backscattering is applied for the investigation of kinetics of residual gas adsorption effect on the concentration and energy positions of surface electron states of Ge(1 1 1) surface. Chemosorption of residual gas molecules on Ge(1 1 1) at P ∼ 10−7 Pa and room temperature is shown to be most active during the first 48 h. Low concentration of dangling valence bonds on the reconstructed Ge(1 1 1) (2 × 8) surface is shown to determine its low activity to chemosorption.  相似文献

The electronic structure and the electron dynamics of the clean InAs(1 1 1)A 2 × 2 and the InAs(1 1 1)B 1 × 1 surfaces have been studied by laser pump-and-probe photoemission spectroscopy. Normally unpopulated electron states above the valence band maximum (VBM) are filled on the InAs(1 1 1)A surface due to the conduction band pinning above the Fermi level (EF). Accompanied by the downward band banding alignment, a charge accumulation layer is confined to the surface region creating a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The decay of the photoexcited carriers above the conduction band minimum (CBM) is originated by bulk states affected by the presence of the surface. No occupied states were found on the InAs(1 1 1)B 1 × 1 surface. This fact is suggested to be due to the surface stabilisation by the charge removal from the surface into the bulk. The weak photoemission intensity above the VBM on the (1 1 1)B surface is attributed to electron states trapped by surface defects. The fast decay of the photoexcited electron states on the (1 1 1)A and the (1 1 1)B surfaces was found to be τ1 1 1 A ? 5 ps and τ1 1 1 B ?  4 ps, respectively. We suggest the diffusion of the hot electrons into the bulk is the decay mechanism.  相似文献

Surface states, that show a k-dependent splitting resulting from spin-orbit coupling, show wide similarities to a two-dimensional electron gas in semiconductor heterostructures, where the Rashba-effect lifts the spin-degeneracy of the bands and allows spin-manipulation by an electric field. We discuss the conditions for such a Rashba-effect at metallic surfaces by comparing ab initio calculations for Au(1 1 1), Ag(1 1 1), and Lu(0 0 0 1) and investigate the influence of electric and magnetic (exchange) fields on these surface states.  相似文献

The quasi two-dimensional surface state on noble metal (1 1 1)-surfaces can be used as a sensitive probe for different surface modifications, adsorption processes, and interactions between adsorbate and substrate. Already one monolayer of physisorbed Xe on Au(1 1 1) is responsible for a characteristic shift of the Shockley state towards the Fermi level and the surface state experiences an increase in spin-orbit splitting of up to 35%. In contrast to the physisorption process of rare gases, a sub-monolayer coverage of an alkali metal, e.g., Na on Au(1 1 1), has the opposite effect on the Shockley state, i.e. an increase in binding energy, until it reaches the bottom of the L-gap and vanishes into the bulk states. Additionally, we studied the intermetallic system Ag/Au(1 1 1) which differs substantially from the other systems because of the similarity in the electronic structure between substrate and overlayer.  相似文献

Ti/GaN interface formation on GaN(0 0 0 1)-(1 × 1) surface has been investigated by means of resonant photoelectron spectroscopy (for photon energies near to Ti 3p → 3d excitation). The sets of photoelectron energy distribution curves were recorded for in situ prepared clean GaN surface and as a function of Ti coverage followed by post-deposition annealing. Manifestations of chemical reactions at the Ti/GaN interface were revealed in the valence band spectra as well as in the Ga 3d core level peak—the discerned contribution of Ti 3d states to the valence band turned out to be similar to that reported in the literature for titanium nitride. The interaction between Ti and N was further enhanced by post-deposition annealing. The study was complemented with SIMS and AFM measurements.  相似文献

Structure and energy related properties of neutral and charged vacancies on relaxed diamond (1 0 0) (2 × 1) surface were investigated by means of density functional theory. Calculations indicate that the diffusion of a single vacancy from the top surface layer to the second layer is not energetically favored. Analysis of energies in charged system shows that neutral state is most stable on diamond (1 0 0) (2 × 1) surface. The multiplicity of possible states can exist on diamond (1 0 0) surface in dependence on the surface Fermi level, which supports that surface diffusion of a vacancy is mediated by the change of vacancy charge states. Analysis of density of states shows surface vacancy can be effectively measured by photoelectricity technology.  相似文献

A new conception of nano-laser is proposed in which depending on the size of nano-clusters (silicon quantum dots (QD)), the pumping level of laser can be tuned by the quantum confinement (QC) effect, and the population inversion can be formed between the valence band and the localized states in gap produced from the surface bonds of nano-clusters. Here we report the experimental demonstration of nano-laser on silicon quantum dots fabricated by nanosecond pulse laser. The peaks of stimulated emission are observed at 605 nm and 693 nm. Through the micro-cavity of nano-laser, a full width at half maximum of the peak at 693 nm can reach to 0.5 nm. The theoretical model and the experimental results indicate that it is a necessary condition for setting up nano-laser that the smaller size of QD (d < 3 nm) can make the localized states into band gap. The emission energy of nano-laser will be limited in the range of 1.7-2.3 eV generally due to the position of the localized states in gap, which is in good agreement between the experiments and the theory.  相似文献

The absorption coefficient of Si nanoparticles embedded in a silica matrix obtained through thermal annealing at 1000 °C of SiO thin films has been determined by a combination of ellipsometry and photothermal deflection spectroscopy. The high absorption level below 2 eV was explained by the superposition of the contribution of: (i) extended states and distorted bond states (Urbach tail), giving rise to an exponential regime of the variation of the absorption coefficient on energy and (ii) point defect states. The value of the characteristic energy of the exponential regime was found above 200 meV. This high value was partly related to the high stress present at the np-Si/SiO2 interface. The point defects were attributed to dangling bonds and induced an additional absorption band located near 1.2 eV contributing to above 100 cm−1 to the absorption at this energy.  相似文献

Au Schottky contact was deposited on the clean CZT (1 1 0) and (1 1 1) A surface by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The real Schottky barrier heights were measured to be 0.738 eV and 0.566 eV by Synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy (SRPES) respectively. The constituents of (1 1 0) and (1 1 1) A surfaces were measured by XPS. The Te concentration on (1 1 1) A surface is higher than that of (1 1 0) surface. And the difference of chemical reactivity and charge transfer were identified by Au 4f7/2, Cd 4d, Te 4d5/2 core level shifts using SRPES. Using metal-induced gap states model, the results of experiment were explained.  相似文献

Band dispersion and transient population of unoccupied electronic states on Si(1 1 1):√3 × √3-Ag surface have been studied by time-resolved (TR) and angle-resolved (AR) two-photon photoemission (2PPE) spectroscopy. The band dispersions originating from unoccupied electronic states have been identified from the comparison between AR-2PPE spectra and angle-resolved one-photon photoemission spectra with synchrotron radiation. A lifetime of unoccupied surface state has been determined from the TR-2PPE spectra.  相似文献

In this work, we have investigated by means of first-principles spin-polarized calculations, the electronic and magnetic properties of iron (Fe) adsorption and diffusion on the GaN(0 0 0 1) surface using density functional theory (DFT) within a plane-wave pseudopotential scheme. In the surface adsorption study, results show that the most stable positions of a Fe adatom on GaN(0 0 0 1) surface are the H3 sites and T4 sites, for low and high Fe coverage respectively. We found that the Fe-H3 2 × 2 surface reconstruction exhibits a half-metallic behavior with a spin band gap and stable ferromagnetism ordering, which is a desirable property for high-efficiency magnetoelectronic devices. In addition, confirming previous experimental results, we found that the iron monolayers present a ferromagnetic order and a large thermal stability. This is interesting from a theoretical point of view and for its technological applications.  相似文献

The electrical and magnetic properties of thin iron (Fe) films have sparked significant scientific interest. Our interest, however, is in the fundamental interactions between light and matter. We have discovered a novel application for thin Fe films. These films are sources of terahertz (THz) radiation when stimulated by an incident laser pulse. After intense femtosecond pulse excitation by a Ti:sapphire laser, these films emit picosecond, broadband THz frequencies. The terahertz emission provides a direct measure of the induced ultrafast change in magnetization within the Fe film. The THz generation experiments and the growth of appropriate thin Fe films for these experiments are discussed. Several criteria are used to select the substrate and film growth conditions, including that the substrate must permit the epitaxial growth of a continuous, monocrystalline or single crystal film, yet must also be transparent to the emitted THz radiation. An Fe(0 0 1) film grown on the (0 0 1) surface of a magnesium oxide (MgO) substrate makes an ideal sample. The Fe films are grown by physical vapor deposition (PVD) in an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) system. Low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) are used to characterize the Fe(0 0 1) films. Two substrate surface preparation methods are investigated. Fe(0 0 1) films grown on MgO(0 0 1) substrates that are used as-received and films grown on MgO(0 0 1) substrates that have been UV/ozone-cleaned ex vacuo and annealed in vacuo produce the same results in the THz generation experiments. Either substrate preparation method permits the growth of samples suitable for the THz emission experiments.  相似文献

Structures of carbon monoxide layers on the oxygen-modified Mo(1 1 0) and Mo(1 1 2) surfaces have been investigated by means of density-functional (DFT) calculations. It is found that CO molecules adsorb at hollow sites on the O/Mo(1 1 0) surface and nearly atop Mo atoms on the O/Mo(1 1 2) surface. The favorable positions for adsorption are shown to be near protrusions of electron density above the Mo surface atoms. The presence of oxygen on the molybdenum surface significantly reduces the binding energy of the CO molecule with the substrate; on the oxygen-saturated Mo(1 1 0) surface, the adsorption of CO is completely blocked. The calculated local densities of states (LDOS) demonstrate that the O 2s peak for O adsorbed on Mo(1 1 0) surface is at −19 eV (with respect to the Fermi level), while for the oxygen atom of an adsorbed CO molecule the related 3σ molecular orbital gives rise to a peak at −23 eV. This difference stems from the bonding of the O atom either with Mo surface for adsorbed O or with C atom in adsorbed CO, and therefore the position of the O 2s peak in photoemission spectra can serve as a convincing argument in favor of either the presence or absence of the CO dissociation on Mo surfaces.  相似文献

We have employed low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to follow the epitaxial growth of thin films of TiO2 on W(1 0 0). The films were grown both by metal vapour deposition of titanium onto the substrate in UHV with subsequent annealing in a low partial pressure of oxygen, and by metal vapour deposition in a low partial pressure of oxygen. LEED patterns showed the characteristic patterns of (1 1 0) oriented rutile. A systematic spot splitting was observed and attributed to a stepped surface. The calculated step height was found to be in good agreement with that expected for rutile TiO2(1 1 0), 3.3 Å. Titanium core level shifts were used to identify oxidation states as a function of film thickness allowing the interpretation in terms of a slightly sub-stoichiometric interface layer in contact with the substrate. In combination with the LEED patterns, the film structure is therefore determined to be (1 1 0) oriented rutile with a comparable level of stoichiometry to UHV prepared bulk crystals. The ordered step structure indicates considerable structural complexity of the surface.  相似文献

X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism have been used to study the growth process, chemical composition and magnetic character of iron deposited on ordered and disordered GaN(0 0 0 1) surfaces. On the (1 × 1) ordered surface the Fe grows uniformly but with disruption to the substrate surface, subsequently nitrogen desorbs from the surface, some of which diffuses into the Fe overlayer. The film is magnetically fractured, with high magnetic coercivity and broad switching fields. Conversely, the gallium rich disordered surface protects the underlying substrate from any disruption and initially induces non-uniform growth, the Fe clusters coalesce at ∼12 Å, to produce a uniform film with desirable magnetic characteristics. Films beyond this point (>12 Å) indicate sharp hysteresis loops with low coercivities. For the resultant film (36 Å) we measure a magnetic moment of 2.02 μB, in agreement with bulk bcc iron (2.068 μB.)  相似文献
