In this paper there is given a method to predict ultrasonic wave velocity variations along a wave path in the through-thickness direction in a plate from thickness resonance spectra. Thickness resonance spectra are numerically calculated and two simple rules used to predict the entire ultrasonic wave velocity variation are derived. In the calculation, the wave path is assumed to be straight along the thickness direction and the velocity variation is assumed to be either as a parabolic curve dependence or a linear dependence with respect to the distance from the surface and to be symmetric with respect to the plate center. To see if the numerical calculation method is reliable, thickness resonance frequencies of a sample with three-layers were measured by EMAT (electromagnetic acoustic transducer) with a good agreement between the measured and the calculated frequencies. This method can be applied to the ultrasonic measurement of material characteristics, internal stress or various other properties of plate materials.  相似文献

Quantitative time-of-flight analysis of laser-generated shear waves and longitudinal-shear mode-converted waves has demonstrated an effective method for non-contact monitoring of the thickness of metal plates. Q-switched Nd:YAG laser pulses with energies of approximately 18 mJ, delivered to the material surface via an optical fibre and focused to a line source by a cylindrical lens, excited surface waves, longitudinal and shear waves. Bulk waves propagated through the plate to be reflected from the far surface. Returning waves were detected using an electro-magnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) sensitive to in-plane motion. The compilation of B-scans generated as the sensor head was moved along the material's surface to produce a 2-D intensity profile made any changes in the plate thickness easy to visualise. The longitudinal-shear (L-S) and shear-longitudinal (S-L) mode-converted waves provided a method of simultaneously monitoring two different points on the far surface enabling any changes in the material thickness to be clearly identified. This method was used to determine the thickness of aluminium samples ranging in from 5 to 70 mm.  相似文献

The article focuses on acoustic resonators made of perforated sheets bonded onto honeycomb cavities. This kind of resonators can be used in adverse conditions such as high temperature, dirt and mechanical constraints. For all these reasons, they are, for example, widely used in aeronautic applications. The acoustic properties are directly linked to the size, shape and porosity of holes and to the thickness of air gaps. Unfortunately, the acoustic absorption of these resonators is selective in frequency and conventional acoustic resonators are only well adapted to tonal noises. In case of variable tonal noise, the efficiency is limited if the resonators are not tunable. One common solution is to control the depth of cavities based on the noise to be attenuated. This article proposes another technology of tunable resonators with only a very small mass and size increase. It consists of two superposed and identically perforated plates associated with cavities. One plate is fixed and bonded to the cavities and the other plate is mobile. The present concept enables to change the internal shapes of the holes of the perforated layers. The article describes this system and gives a theoretical model of the normal incidence acoustic impedance that allows to predict the acoustic behavior, in particular the resonance frequency. The model shows that the resonance frequency varies with hole profiles and that the absorption peak moves towards the lower frequencies. The proposed model is validated by measurements on various configurations of resonators tested in an impedance tube. The perspectives of this work are to adapt the hole profiles using an actuator in order to perform active control of impedance.  相似文献

The paper describes the results of experimental measurements of point mobility carried out on circular plates containing tapered holes of quadratic power-law profile with attached damping layers. The obtained results are compared to the developed numerical model, as a means of validation. The profiles of the tapered hole in the plates are designed to replicate near zero reflection of quasi-plane waves from a tapered hole in geometrical acoustics approximation, also known as acoustic black hole effect. The driving point mobility measurements are provided, showing a comparison of the results for a constant thickness circular plate, a constant thickness plate with a layer of damping film applied and a plate with a quadratic power-law profile machined into the center, which is tested with a thin layer of elastic damping material attached. The results indicate a substantial suppression of resonant peaks, agreeing with a numerical model, which is based on the analytical solution available for the vibration of a plate with a central quadratic power-law profile. The paper contains results for the case of free boundary conditions on all edges of the plates, with emphasis placed on the predictions of resonant frequencies and the amplitudes of vibration and loss factor.  相似文献

Aluminium sheet thickness has been calculated from ultrasonic data obtained using a send-receive, radially polarised electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT). Sheets in the thickness range between 0.1 and 0.5 mm have been measured using this non-contact approach at a stand-off of up to 1.5 mm. Normal incidence shear waves generated and detected in the sheet and the resultant waveforms have been processed using transit time measurements and Fourier analysis. Two broad band EMAT systems have been used to perform the measurements with centre frequencies of approximately 5 MHz and frequency content up to 10 and 20 MHz respectively. The most accurate measurements of thickness on thin sheets have been made using Fourier analysis and have yielded measurements accurate to within 0.2% (or 0.4 microm) for 280 microm thick aluminium sheets. Discrete shear wave echoes can be observed for sheets down to a thickness of 250 microm using the higher frequency EMAT system. However temporal measurements of these signals yield lower accuracy results when compared to the Fourier analysis method which is capable of sub-micron accuracy.  相似文献

The traditional Micro-perforated plate (MPP) is a kind of clean and non-polluting absorption structure in the middle and high frequency and has been widely used in the field of noise control. However, the sound absorption performance is dissatisfied at low frequencies when the air-cavity depth is restricted. In this paper, a mechanical impedance plate (MIP) is introduced into the traditional MPP structure and a Helmholtz resonator is attached to the MIP. Mechanical impedance plate (MIP) provides a good absorption at low frequency by using mechanism of mechanical resonance and the acoustic energy is dissipated in the form of heat with viscoelastic material. Helmholtz resonator can fill in the defect of the poor absorption effect between the Micro-perforated plate (MPP) and the mechanical impedance plate (MIP). The acoustic impedance of the proposed sound absorber is investigated by using acoustic electric analogy method and impedance transfer method. The influence of the tube’s length of Helmholtz resonator and the number of Helmholtz resonator on the sound absorption is studied. The corresponding results are in agreement with the theoretical calculation and prove that the composite structure has the characteristics of improving the low frequency sound absorption property.  相似文献

The effect of a metal layer over an elastic substrate on surface acoustic wave propagating in the structure can be evaluated precisely for semi-infinite solids and infinite plates, but there is no accurate analytical solution if the finite size of the plate has to be considered. By expanding displacements with eigensolutions of surface acoustic waves in a semi-inifite solid, a set of two-dimensional equations similar to the Mindlin plate theory are obtained. Then for a thin electrode layer, the effect is considered through the approximation of displacements in the metal layer with the ones in the substrate, and an integration over the thickness incorporated the properties of the metal layer into equations through the modification of material properties with the decaying indices of surface acoustic waves and the thickness of the metal layer. Using AT-cut quartz crystal as the substrate, we present the effect of silver electrode layers of finite thickness on the phase velocity of propagating surface acoustic waves.  相似文献

The crystalline texture of a sheet metal strongly affects its formability, so having knowledge of this texture is of great industrial relevance. The texture of rolled sheet metals, such as aluminium and steel, may be determined by ultrasonic measurement of the velocity of the zero order symmetric (S(0)) Lamb wave as a function of angle to the rolling direction. Electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) may perform this measurement without contacting the sample, therefore reducing perturbation to the plate wave system, as they are electromagnetically coupled to the sheet. The EMAT system measurements are non-destructive and may be made in real time, therefore offering advantages over the conventional techniques such as X-ray and neutron diffraction. It has been noticed that in the two EMAT pitch-catch system, the apparent arrival times of the ultrasonic waves change with variation in lift-off (distance between sample and transducer) due to impedance and aperture effects. For precise and accurate texture parameters to be obtained, accurate absolute ultrasonic velocity measurement is required and hence lift-off must be compensated for. This is of particular importance to online inspection systems where constant lift-off may be difficult to maintain. The impedance behaviour of various coil geometries has been investigated as a function of lift-off and frequency and compared to the received ultrasonic signal and the drive current pulse profile. Theoretical models have been used to explain the observed behaviour, and hence a scheme has been proposed for the compensation of lift-off effects in real time.  相似文献

The detection of thin embedded layers using normal incidence ultrasound   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A theoretical investigation of the use of normal incidence ultrasonic reflection measurements for the detection and characterization of thin layers embedded between two much thicker media has been carried out. It has been shown that the form of the relationship between the normal incidence longitudinal reflection coefficient and frequency is defined by the reflection coefficients at zero frequency and at half the resonance frequency of the layer. The reflection coefficient at zero frequency is solely a function of the impedances of the media on either side of the layer, while that at half the resonance frequency of the layer is a function of the impedances of all three media. In general, the sensitivity of the reflection coefficient to the presence of the layer increases as the product of frequency and layer thickness increases, the maximum sensitivity being at half the resonance frequency of the layer. Unfortunately, with thin layers, it is generally not practical to test at this frequency. However, the reflection coefficient curve can, in principle, be reconstructed from data measured at lower frequencies and the sensitivity of the reflection coefficient at lower frequencies to the characteristics of the layer can be predicted from the sensitivity at half the resonance frequency. The sensitivity is also critically dependent on the relative impedances of the three media and is generally greatest when the half spaces on either side of the layer have the same impedance. With favourable impedances, it is possible to detect layers whose thickness is a small fraction of the wavelength of the ultrasonic waves employed. However, with other combinations of impedances, the detection of much thicker layers is not possible.  相似文献

In different solutions of ultrasonic transducers radiating acoustic energy into the air there occurs the problem of the proper selection of the acoustic impedance of one or more matching layers. The goal of this work was a computer analysis of the influence of acoustic impedance on the transfer function of piezoceramic transducers equipped with matching layers. Cases of resonance and non-resonance matching impedance in relation to the transfer function and the energy transmission coefficient for solid state-air systems were analysed. With stable thickness of matching layers the required shape of the transfer function can be obtained through proper choice of acoustic impedance were built (e.g. maximal flat function). The proper choice of acoustic impedance requires an elaboration of precise methods of synthesis of matching systems. Using the known matching criteria (Chebyshev's, DeSilets', Souquet's), the transfer function characteristics of transducers equipped with one, two, and three matching layers as well as the optimisation methods of the energy transmission coefficient were presented. The influence of the backside load of the transducer on the shape of transfer function was also analysed. The calculation results of this function for different loads of the transducer backside without and with the different matching layers were presented. The proper load selection allows us to obtain the desired shape of the transfer function, which determines the pulse shape generated by the transducer.  相似文献
