It is difficult to hear out individually the components of a "chord" of equal-amplitude pure tones with synchronous onsets and offsets. In the present study, this was confirmed using 300-ms random (inharmonic) chords with components at least 1/2 octave apart. Following each chord, after a variable silent delay, listeners were presented with a single pure tone which was either identical to one component of the chord or halfway in frequency between two components. These two types of sequence could not be reliably discriminated from each other. However, it was also found that if the single tone following the chord was instead slightly (e.g., 1/12 octave) lower or higher in frequency than one of its components, the same listeners were sensitive to this relation. They could perceive a pitch shift in the corresponding direction. Thus, it is possible to perceive a shift in a nonperceived frequency/pitch. This paradoxical phenomenon provides psychophysical evidence for the existence of automatic "frequency-shift detectors" in the human auditory system. The data reported here suggest that such detectors operate at an early stage of auditory scene analysis but can be activated by a pair of sounds separated by a few seconds.  相似文献

In a test sound consisting of a burst of pink noise, an arbitrarily selected target frequency band can be "enhanced" by the previous presentation of a similar noise with a spectral notch in the target frequency region. As a result of the enhancement, the test sound evokes a pitch sensation corresponding to the pitch of the target band. Here, a pitch comparison task was used to assess enhancement. In the first experiment, a stronger enhancement effect was found when the test sound and its precursor had the same interaural time difference (ITD) than when they had opposite ITDs. Two subsequent experiments were concerned with the audibility of an instance of dichotic pitch in binaural test sounds preceded by precursors. They showed that it is possible to enhance a frequency region on the sole basis of ITD manipulations, using spectrally identical test sounds and precursors. However, the observed effects were small. A major goal of this study was to test the hypothesis that enhancement originates at least in part from neural adaptation processes taking place at a central level of the auditory system. The Franssen Effect (FE) is a striking auditory illusion previously demonstrated only in humans. To elicit the FE, subjects are presented with two spatially-separated sounds; one a transient tone with an abrupt onset and immediate ramped offset and the other a sustained tone of the same frequency with a ramped onset which remains on for several hundred ms. The FE illusion occurs when listeners localize the tones at the location of the transient signal, even though that sound has ended and the sustained one is still present. The FE illusion occurs most readily in reverberant environments and with pure tones of approximately 1-2.5 kHz in humans, conditions where sound localization is difficult in humans. Here, we demonstrate this illusion in domestic cats using, for the first time, localization procedures. Previous studies in humans employed discrimination procedures, making it difficult to link the FE to sound localization mechanisms. The frequencies for eliciting the FE in cats were higher than in humans, corresponding to frequencies where cats have difficulty localizing pure tones. These findings strengthen the hypothesis that difficulty in accurately localizing sounds is the basis for the FE.  相似文献

Auditory stream segregation refers to the organization of sequential sounds into "perceptual streams" reflecting individual environmental sound sources. In the present study, sequences of alternating high and low tones, "...ABAB...," similar to those used in psychoacoustic experiments on stream segregation, were presented to awake monkeys while neural activity was recorded in primary auditory cortex (A1). Tone frequency separation (AF), tone presentation rate (PR), and tone duration (TD) were systematically varied to examine whether neural responses correlate with effects of these variables on perceptual stream segregation. "A" tones were fixed at the best frequency of the recording site, while "B" tones were displaced in frequency from "A" tones by an amount = delta F. As PR increased, "B" tone responses decreased in amplitude to a greater extent than "A" tone responses, yielding neural response patterns dominated by "A" tone responses occurring at half the alternation rate. Increasing TD facilitated the differential attenuation of "B" tone responses. These findings parallel psychoacoustic data and suggest a physiological model of stream segregation whereby increasing delta F, PR, or TD enhances spatial differentiation of "A" tone and "B" tone responses along the tonotopic map in A1.  相似文献

Psychoacoustic experiments were performed to measure the pitch-shift effects of pure and complex tones resulting from the addition of a masking noise to the tonal stimuli. Harmonic residue tones with either two or three harmonics and a fundamental frequency of 200 Hz were chosen as test tones. The pitch shifts of virtual and spectral pitches of the residue tones were measured as a function of the intensity of a low-pass noise with 600-Hz cutoff frequency. The SPL of this noise varied between 30 and 70 dB. In another experiment, the pitch shifts of single pure tones corresponding to the frequencies and SPLs of the harmonics of the residue tones were measured using the same masking noise. The results from five subjects for the harmonic residue tones show only a weak dependence of pitch shift on masking noise intensity. This dependence exists for both spectral and virtual pitches. In the case of single pure tones, pitch shift depends more distinctly on noise intensity. Pitch shifts of up to 5% were found in the range of noise intensity investigated. The magnitude of pitch shift shows pronounced interindividual differences, but the direction of the shift effect is always the same. In all cases pitch increases with higher masking noise levels.  相似文献

Loudness level measurements in human listeners are straightforward; however, it is difficult to convey the concepts of loudness matching or loudness comparison to (non-human) animals. For this reason, prior studies have relied upon objective measurements, such as response latency, to estimate equal loudness contours in animals. In this study, a bottlenose dolphin was trained to perform a loudness comparison test, where the listener indicates which of two sequential tones is louder. To enable reward of the dolphin, most trials featured tones with identical or similar frequencies, but relatively large sound pressure level differences, so that the loudness relationship was known. A relatively small percentage of trials were "probe" trials, with tone pairs whose loudness relationship was not known. Responses to the probe trials were used to construct psychometric functions describing the loudness relationship between a tone at a particular frequency and sound pressure level and that of a reference tone at 10 kHz with a sound pressure level of 90, 105, or 115 dB re 1 μPa. The loudness relationships were then used to construct equal loudness contours and auditory weighting functions that can be used to predict the frequency-dependent effects of noise on odontocetes.  相似文献

Structure-borne noise originating from a heat pump unit was selected to study the influence on subjective annoyance of low frequency noise (LFN) combined with additional sound. Paired comparison test was used for evaluating the subjective annoyance of LFN combined with different sound pressure levels (SPL) of pink noise, frequency-modulated pure tones (FM pure tones) and natural sounds. The results showed that, with pink noise of 250-1000 Hz combined with the original LFN, the subjective annoyance value (SAV) first dropped then rose with increasing SPL. When SPL of the pink noise was 15-25 dB, SAV was lower than that of the original LFN. With pink noise of frequency 250-20,000 Hz added to LFN, SAV increased linearly with increasing SPL. SAV and the psychoacoustic annoyance value (PAV) obtained by semi-theoretical formulas were well correlated. The determination coefficient (R2) was 0.966 and 0.881, respectively, when the frequency range of the pink noise was 250-1000 and 250-20,000 Hz. When FM pure tones with central frequencies of 500, 2000 and 8000 Hz, or natural sounds (including the sound of singing birds, flowing water, wind or ticking clock) were, respectively, added to the original sound, the SAV increased as the SPL of the added sound increased. However, when a FM pure tone of 15 dB with a central frequency of 2000 Hz and a modulation frequency of 10 Hz was added, the SAV was lower than that of the original LFN. With SPL and central frequency held invariable, the SAV declined primarily when modulation frequency increased. With SPL and modulation frequency held invariable, the SAV became lowest when the central frequency was 2000 Hz. This showed a preferable correlation between SAV and fluctuation extent of FM pure tones.  相似文献

How the brain estimates the pitch of a complex sound remains unsolved. Complex sounds are composed of more than one tone. When two tones occur together, a third lower pitched tone is often heard. This is referred to as the "missing fundamental illusion" because the perceived pitch is a frequency (fundamental) for which there is no actual source vibration. This phenomenon exemplifies a larger variety of problems related to how pitch is extracted from complex tones, music and speech, and thus has been extensively used to test theories of pitch perception. A noisy nonlinear process is presented here as a candidate neural mechanism to explain the majority of reported phenomenology and provide specific quantitative predictions. The two basic premises of this model are as follows: (I) The individual tones composing the complex tones add linearly producing peaks of constructive interference whose amplitude is always insufficient to fire the neuron (II): The spike threshold is reached only with noise, which naturally selects the maximum constructive interferences. The spacing of these maxima, and consequently the spikes, occurs at a rate identical to the perceived pitch for the complex tone. Comparison with psychophysical and physiological data reveals a remarkable quantitative agreement not dependent on adjustable parameters. In addition, results from numerical simulations across different models are consistent, suggesting relevance to other sensory modalities.  相似文献

Results are reviewed concerning some effects, at a units's characteristic frequency, of a short-term conditioning stimulus on the responses to perstimulatory and poststimulatory test tones. A phenomenological equation is developed from the poststimulatory results and shown to be consistent with the perstimulatory results. According to the results and equation, the response to a test tone equals the unconditioned or unadapted response minus the decrement produced by adaptation to the conditioning tone. Furthermore, the decrement is proportional to the driven response to the conditioning tone and does not depend on sound intensity per se. The equation has a simple interpretation in terms of two processes in cascade--a static saturating nonlinearity followed by additive adaptation. Results are presented to show that this functional model is sufficient to account for the "physiological masking" produced by wide-band backgrounds. According to this interpretation, a sufficiently intense background produces saturation. Consequently, a superimposed test tone cause no change in response. In addition, when the onset of the background precedes the onset of the test tone, the total firing rate is reduced by adaptation. Evidence is reviewed concerning the possible correspondence between the variables in the model and intracellular events in the auditory periphery.  相似文献

The discrimination of the fundamental frequency (fo) of pairs of complex tones with no common harmonics is worse than the discrimination of fo for tones with all harmonics in common. These experiments were conducted to assess whether this effect is a result of pitch shifts between pairs of tones without common harmonics or whether it reflects influences of spectral differences (timbre) on the accuracy of pitch perception. In experiment 1, pitch matches were obtained between sounds drawn from the following types: (1) pure tones (P) with frequencies 100, 200, or 400 Hz; (2) a multiple-component complex tone, designated A, with harmonics 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, and fo = 100, 200, or 400 Hz; (3) A multiple-component complex tone, designated B, with harmonics 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 16, and with fo = 100, 200 or 400 Hz. The following matches were made; A vs A, B vs B, A vs P, B vs P and P vs P. Pitch shifts were found between the pure tones and the complex tones (A vs P and B vs P), but not between the A and B tones (A vs B). However, the variability of the A vs B matches was significantly greater than that of the A vs A or B vs B matches. Also, the variability of the A vs P and B vs P matches was greater than that for the A vs B matches. In a second experiment, frequency difference limens (DLCs) were measured for the A vs A, B vs B, and A vs B pairs of sounds. The DLCs were larger for the A vs B pair than for A vs A or B vs B. The results suggest that the poor frequency discrimination of tones with no common harmonics does not result from pitch shifts between the tones. Rather, it seems that spectral differences between tones interfere with judgements of their relative pitch.  相似文献

Auditory and vibrotactile stimuli share similar temporal patterns. A psychophysical experiment was performed to test whether this similarity would lead into an intermodal bias in perception of sound intensity. Nine normal-hearing subjects performed a loudness-matching task of faint tones, adjusting the probe tone to sound equally loud as a reference tone. The task was performed both when the subjects were touching and when they were not touching a tube that vibrated simultaneously with the probe tone. The subjects chose on average 12% lower intensities (p < 0.01) for the probe tone when they touched the tube, suggesting facilitatory interaction between auditory and tactile senses in normal-hearing subjects.  相似文献

The effect of a pulse jam on the audibility of pure tones in the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is investigated. The pulse jam consists of a sequence of pairs of identical short pulses with a pulse spacing of 50 µs in each pair and with a pair repetition rate of 300 s?1. The test signal is represented by pure tones in the frequency range 20–100 kHz. The audibility thresholds for the test signals are measured at 10-kHz steps, both in the presence of the pulse jam and in its absence, on the basis of the conditioned-reflex method with food reinforcement. The resulting dependence of the threshold shifts (TS) due to the pulse jam on the frequency of the test signal has a complex form. This dependence can be separated into three components: (1) the oscillations of the TS curve that correlate with the extrema of the spectral density of the jam, so that the peaks and dips of the TS curve correspond to the maxima and minima of the spectral density, respectively; (2) the component monotonically decreasing as the frequency grows up to 80 kHz, which distinguishes the TS curve under consideration from the rising curve obtained for masking by random noise; and (3) the frequency-independent component of the TS curve. The following auditory features are associated with these components: component 1 determines the timbre of the pulse jam; component 2 is presumably related to the pitch corresponding to the frequency 1/τ; and component 3 exhibits a rather strong auditory feature of random noise due to the random neural activity caused by the pulse jam in the whole auditory filter band.  相似文献

It was shown previously that electrically evoked otoacoustic emissions (EEOAEs) can be amplitude modulated by low-frequency bias tones and enhanced by application of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to scala media. These effects were attributed, respectively, to the mechano-electrical transduction (MET) channels and ATP-gated ion channels on outer hair cell (OHC) stereocilia, two conductance pathways that appear to be functionally independent and additive in their effects on ionic current through the OHC. In the experiments described here, the separate influences of ATP and MET channel bias on EEOAEs did not combine linearly. Modulated EEOAEs increased in amplitude, but lost modulation at the phase and frequency of the bias tone (except at very high sound levels) after application of ATP to scala media, even though spectral components at the modulation sideband frequencies were still present. Some sidebands underwent phase shifts after ATP. In EEOAEs modulated by tones at lower sound levels, substitution of the original phase values restored modulation to the waveform, which then resembled a linear summation of the separate effects of ATP and low-frequency bias. While the physiological meaning of this procedure is not clear, the result raises the possibility that a secondary effect of ATP on one or more nonlinear stages in the transduction process, which may have caused the phase shifts, obscured linear summation at lower sound levels. In addition, "acoustic enhancement" of the EEOAE may have introduced nonlinear interaction at higher levels of the bias tones.  相似文献

Pitch judgments for dichotic chords composed of two pure tones often show a bias in favor of the chord-component going to one ear. This "ear-advantage for pitch" (EAP) varies between subjects, but is very stable within subject and is thought to reflect differences in spectral "sensitivity" of the two auditory pathways. The present study explored this hypothesis by examining pitch judgments of complexes composed of tones dichotically paired with frequency-varying signals. The direction and strength of EAP was first established using pure tones, then rising tone glides were introduced into the channel going to thenondominant ear. Since a glide possesses less energy at a given frequency than a pure tone of equal duration, an increase in EAP was expected. An increase in EAP was consistently observed for only one subject; three subjects showed small, variable effects; and six subjects displayed a decrease in EAP. The results suggested that factors other than relative spectral sensitivity affect observed EAP.  相似文献

This study investigated effects of a previous sound presentation at the absolute threshold of hearing. Changes in threshold were measured when a pure tone at 60 dB SPL preceded a test tone in the contra- or ipsilateral ear. When the previous and test sounds both had the same frequency of 500 Hz, threshold decreased approximately 2 dB in the contralateral ear, and increased slightly in the ipsilateral ear. On the other hand, when the frequency of the previous sound differed from that of the test sound, the threshold was decreased slightly in the ipsilateral ear.  相似文献

The use of ultrasonic sounds in alarms for gillnets may be advantageous, but the deterring effects of ultrasound on porpoises are not well understood. Therefore a harbor porpoise in a large floating pen was subjected to a continuous 50 kHz pure tone with a source level of 122+/-3 dB (re 1 microPa, rms). When the test signal was switched on during test periods, the animal moved away from the sound source. Its respiration rate was similar to that during baseline periods, when the sound was switched off. The behavior of the porpoise was related to the sound pressure level distribution in the pen. The sound level at the animal's average swimming location during the test periods was approximately 107+/-3 dB (re 1 microPa, rms). The avoidance threshold sound pressure level for a continuous 50 kHz pure tone for this porpoise, in the context of this study, is estimated to be 108+/-3 dB (re 1 microPa, rms). This study demonstrates that porpoises may be deterred from an area by high frequency sounds that are not typically audible to fish and pinnipeds and would be less likely masked by ambient noise.  相似文献

This study examined the perception and cortical representation of harmonic complex tones, from the perspective of the spectral fusion evoked by such sounds. Experiment 1 tested whether ferrets spontaneously distinguish harmonic from inharmonic tones. In baseline sessions, ferrets detected a pure tone terminating a sequence of inharmonic tones. After they reached proficiency, a small fraction of the inharmonic tones were replaced with harmonic tones. Some of the animals confused the harmonic tones with the pure tones at twice the false-alarm rate. Experiment 2 sought correlates of harmonic fusion in single neurons of primary auditory cortex and anterior auditory field, by comparing responses to harmonic tones with those to inharmonic tones in the awake alert ferret. The effects of spectro-temporal filtering were accounted for by using the measured spectrotemporal receptive field to predict responses and by seeking correlates of fusion in the predictability of responses. Only 12% of units sampled distinguished harmonic tones from inharmonic tones, a small percentage that is consistent with the relatively weak ability of the ferrets to spontaneously discriminate harmonic tones from inharmonic tones in Experiment 1.  相似文献

The loudness of auditory (A), tactile (T), and auditory-tactile (A+T) stimuli was measured at supra-threshold levels. Auditory stimuli were pure tones presented binaurally through headphones; tactile stimuli were sinusoids delivered through a single-channel vibrator to the left middle fingertip. All stimuli were presented together with a broadband auditory noise. The A and T stimuli were presented at levels that were matched in loudness to that of the 200-Hz auditory tone at 25 dB sensation level. The 200-Hz auditory tone was then matched in loudness to various combinations of auditory and tactile stimuli (A+T), and purely auditory stimuli (A+A). The results indicate that the matched intensity of the 200-Hz auditory tone is less when the A+T and A+A stimuli are close together in frequency than when they are separated by an octave or more. This suggests that A+T integration may operate in a manner similar to that found in auditory critical band studies, further supporting a strong frequency relationship between the auditory and somatosensory systems.  相似文献
