The transition from partial to complete spin polarization of two-dimensional electrons at half filling of the lowest Landau level has been studied using resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance (RDNMR). The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time is observed to be density independent in the partially polarized phase but to increase sharply at the transition to full polarization. At low temperatures the RDNMR signal exhibits a strong maximum near the critical density.  相似文献

We investigate low-frequency electron spin dynamics in a quantum Hall system with wire confinement by nuclear spin relaxation measurements. We developed a technique to measure the local nuclear spin relaxation rate T(1)(-1). T(1)(-1) is enhanced on both sides of the local filling factor ν(wire)=1, reflecting low-frequency fluctuations of electron spins associated with Skyrmions inside the wire. As the wire width is decreased, the fast nuclear spin relaxation is suppressed in a certain range of Skyrmion density. This suggests that the multi-Skyrmion state is modified and the low-frequency spin fluctuations are suppressed by the wire confinement.  相似文献

The nuclear-spin-relaxation rate 1/T(1) has been measured in a bilayer electron system at and around total Landau level filling factor nu=1. The measured 1/T(1), which probes electron spin fluctuations, is found to increase gradually from the quantum Hall (QH) state at low fields through a phase transition to the compressible state at high fields. Furthermore, 1/T(1) in the QH state shows a noticeable increase away from nu=1. These results demonstrate that, as opposed to common assumption, the electron spin degree of freedom is not completely frozen either in the QH or the compressible states.  相似文献

The nuclear spin dynamics in an asymmetrically doped 16-nm AlAs quantum well grown along the [001] direction has been studied experimentally using the time decay of the Overhauser shift of paramagnetic resonance of conduction electrons. The nonzero spin polarization of nuclei causing the initial observed Overhauser shift is due the relaxation of the nonequilibrium spin polarization of electrons into the nuclear subsystem near electron paramagnetic resonance owing to the hyperfine interaction. The measured relaxation time of nuclear spins near the unity filling factor is (530 ± 30) min at the temperature T = 0.5 K. This value exceeds the characteristic spin relaxation times of nuclei in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures by more than an order of magnitude. This fact indicates the decrease in the strength of the hyperfine interaction in the AlAs quantum well in comparison with GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures.  相似文献

We investigate the quantum Hall (QH) states near the charge-neutral Dirac point of a high mobility graphene sample in high magnetic fields. We find that the QH states at filling factors nu=+/-1 depend only on the perpendicular component of the field with respect to the graphene plane, indicating that they are not spin related. A nonlinear magnetic field dependence of the activation energy gap at filling factor nu=1 suggests a many-body origin. We therefore propose that the nu=0 and +/-1 states arise from the lifting of the spin and sublattice degeneracy of the n=0 Landau level, respectively.  相似文献

The coherent spin dynamics of a two-dimensional electron gas in a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well is experimentally studied near the filling factors ν = 3 and 1. The nonmonotonic character of the dependence of the spin dephasing time of a Goldstone spin exciton on the filling factor is found experimentally. The observed effect can be due to the formation of a new spin relaxation channel, when the main state of the two-dimensional electron system is a spin-textured liquid.  相似文献

The quantum Hall (QH) effect in two-dimensional electrons and holes in high quality graphene samples is studied in strong magnetic fields up to 45 T. QH plateaus at filling factors nu = 0, +/-1, +/-4 are discovered at magnetic fields B > 20 T, indicating the lifting of the fourfold degeneracy of the previously observed QH states at nu = +/-4(absolute value(n) + 1/2), where n is the Landau-level index. In particular, the presence of the nu = 0, +/-1 QH plateaus indicates that the Landau level at the charge neutral Dirac point splits into four sublevels, lifting sublattice and spin degeneracy. The QH effect at nu = +/-4 is investigated in a tilted magnetic field and can be attributed to lifting of the spin degeneracy of the n = 1 Landau level.  相似文献

We study the mechanism of nuclear spin relaxation in quantum dots due to the electron exchange with the 2D gas. We show that the nuclear spin relaxation rate 1/T(1) is dramatically affected by the Coulomb blockade (CB) and can be controlled by gate voltage. In the case of strong spin-orbit (SO) coupling the relaxation rate is maximal in the CB valleys, whereas for the weak SO coupling the maximum of 1/T(1) is near the CB peaks.  相似文献

The spin degree of freedom in quantum phases of the second Landau level is probed by resonant light scattering. The long wavelength spin wave, which monitors the degree of spin polarization, is at the Zeeman energy in the fully spin-polarized state at ν = 3. At lower filling factors, the intensity of the Zeeman mode collapses, indicating loss of polarization. A novel continuum of low-lying excitations emerges that dominates near ν = 8/3 and ν = 5/2. Resonant Rayleigh scattering reveals that quantum fluids for ν < 3 break up into robust domain structures. While the state at ν = 5/2 is considered to be fully polarized, these results reveal unprecedented roles for spin degrees of freedom.  相似文献

We report magnetotransport measurements of fractional quantum Hall states in an AlAs quantum well around a Landau level filling factor nu=3/2, demonstrating that the quasiparticles are composite fermions (CFs) with a valley degree of freedom. By monitoring the valley level crossings for these states as a function of applied symmetry-breaking strain, we determine the CF valley susceptibility and polarization. The data can be explained well by a simple Landau level fan diagram for CFs, and are in nearly quantitative agreement with the results reported for CF spin polarization.  相似文献

We review recent heat capacity and magnetotransport experiments on GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures containing multilayer two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) in the quantum Hall regime. Emphasis in this article is on the study of the heat capacity near Landau level filling factor ν=1. We also present a detailed survey of the development of the quantum Hall effect in tilted-magnetic fields for ν≲2. Among the novel phenomena we address is the strong coupling between the nuclear spins and the electrons associated with the spin phase transitions of the 2DES at ν=4/3 and near ν=1. We consider the two lowest Landau levels at half filling. In the higher Landau level (nu = 5/2), we find a first-order phase transition separating a compressible striped phase from a paired quantum Hall state, which is identified as the Moore-Read state. The critical point is very near the Coulomb potential and the transition can be driven by increasing the width of the electron layer. We find a much weaker transition (either second-order or a crossover) from pairing to the composite fermion Fermi-liquid behavior. A very similar picture is obtained for the lowest Landau level, but the transition point is not near the Coulomb potential.  相似文献

We report a study of spin-related magnetotransport properties of a type II broken-gap heterostructure formed by InAs substrate bulky doped with Mn and δ-Mn-doped GaInAsSb epilayer. Planar and vertical quantum magnetotransport in a 2D-electron-hole system at the single type II broken-gap InAs/GaInAsSb heterointerface was investigated in high magnetic fields under the quantum Hall regime up to 15 T at low temperature (T=1.5 K). The I-V characteristics near the dielectric phase boundary show the step-like behavior that corresponds to the quantum conductance in a disordered 2D structure through the extended edge states of the nearest Landau level closest to the Fermi level. The value of these steps is determined by the orientation of the 2D-electron spin at the Landau level and the magnetic moment of Mn in the δ-layer.  相似文献

The Hartree-Fock paradigm of bilayer quantum Hall states with finite tunneling at filling factor nu=1 has full pseudospin ferromagnetic order with all the electrons in the lowest symmetric Landau level. Inelastic light scattering measurements of low energy spin excitations reveal major departures from the paradigm at relatively large tunneling gaps. The results indicate the emergence of a novel correlated quantum Hall state at nu=1 characterized by reduced pseudospin order. Marked anomalies occur in spin excitations when pseudospin polarization collapses by application of in-plane magnetic fields.  相似文献

We study interactions between electrons and nuclear spins by using the resistance ( Rxx) peak which develops near the Landau-level filling factor nu = 2/3 as a probe. Temporarily tuning nu to a different value, nu(temp), with a gate demonstrates that the Rxx peak regenerates even after complete depletion ( nu(temp) = 0), while it rapidly relaxes on either side of nu(temp) = 1. This indicates that the nu = 2/3 domain morphology is memorized by the nuclear spins which can be rapidly depolarized by Skyrmions. An additional enhancement in the nuclear spin relaxation around nu = 1/2 and 3/2 suggests a Fermi sea of partially polarized composite fermions.  相似文献

The complex nature of filling factor ν = 0 of monolayer graphene is studied in magnetotransport experiments. As a function of perpendicular magnetic field a metal-insulator transition is observed, which is attributed to disorder-induced Landau level broadening in the canted antiferromagnetic phase. In the metallic regime a separation of the zeroth Landau level appears and signs of the quantum spin Hall effect are seen near ν = 0. In addition to local transport, nonlocal transport experiments show results being consistent with helical edge transport.  相似文献

We report a 29Si NMR study on aligned single crystals of YbRh2Si2 which shows behavior characteristic of a quantum critical point (QCP: T(N)-->0). The Knight shift K and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T(1) of Si show a strong dependence on the external field H, especially below 5 kOe. At the lowest H used in this measurement (H approximately 1.5 kOe), it was found that 1/T(1)T continues to increase down to 50 mK, whereas K stays constant with a large magnitude below 200 mK. This result strongly suggests the development of antiferromagnetic fluctuations with finite q vectors that compete with q=0 spin fluctuations in the vicinity of the QCP near H=0.5 kOe.  相似文献

We investigate the electron spin states in the bilayer quantum Hall system at total Landau level filling factor nu=2 exploiting current-pumped and resistively detected NMR. The measured Knight shift, K(S), of 75As nuclei reveals continuous variation of the out-of-plane electronic spin polarization between nearly full and zero as a function of density imbalance. Nuclear spin relaxation measurements indicate a concurrent development of an in-plane spin component. These results provide direct information on the spin configuration in this system and comprise strong evidence for the spin canting suggested by previous experiments.  相似文献

Using a "standard" NMR spin-echo technique we determined the spin polarization P of two-dimensional electrons, confined to GaAs quantum wells, from the hyperfine shift of Ga nuclei located in the wells. Concentrating on the temperature ( 0.05 less, similarT less, similar10 K) and magnetic field ( 7 less, similarB less, similar17 T) dependencies of P at Landau level filling factor nu = 1/2, we find that the results are described well by a simple model of noninteracting composite fermions, although some inconsistencies remain when the two-dimensional electron system is tilted in the magnetic field.  相似文献
