We demonstrate a novel method for low-loss splicing small-core photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) and single-mode fibers (SMFs) by repeated arc discharges using a conventional fusion splicer. An optimum mode field match at the interface of PCF-SMF and an adiabatic mode field variation in the longitudinal direction of the small-core PCF can be achieved by repeated arc discharges applied over the splicing joint to gradually collapse the air holes of the small-core PCF. This method is simple and offers a practical solution for light coupling between small-core PCFs and SMFs.  相似文献

A novel method for light coupling between single-mode fibers (SMFs) and small-core photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) is demonstrated. The method is based on growing photopolymer microtips directly on the end faces of SMFs. The shape and size of the tips can be controlled by adjusting the laser power and the exposure time for polymerization to match the mode field to the small-core PCFs. A 5 dB improvement in coupling efficiency between a SMF and a commercial small-core, highly nonlinear PCF is experimentally demonstrated. This compact and efficient butt-coupling method is particularly suitable for PCF gas sensor applications.  相似文献

A method based on controlled air hole collapse for low-loss fusion splicing small-core photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) and single-mode fibers (SMFs) was demonstrated. A taper rig was used to control air hole collapse accurately to enlarge the MFDs of PCFs which was then spliced with SMFs using a fusion splicer. An optimum mode field match at the interface of PCF-SMF was achieved and a low-loss with 0.64 dB was obtained from 3.57 dB for a PCF with 4 μm MFD and a SMF with 10.4 μm MFD experimentally.  相似文献

利用矢量有效折射率方法(矢量法)对光子晶体光纤基模的色散特性进行了数值模拟,并与双正交归一基矢量法以及标量有效折射率方法(标量法)的模拟结果进行了对比.发现所用矢量法的结果与双正交归一基矢量法的结果符合很好,而标量法在低空气填充率f或较高归一化波数A/λ时是一种较好的近似,在空气填充率f较高或归一化波数A/λ较低时,要得到精确的结果必须利用矢量法对光子晶体光纤的特性进行模拟.讨论了光子晶体光纤包层有效折射率与光纤结构的关系. 关键词: 光子晶体光纤 矢量法 有效折射率 色散  相似文献

Low-loss splicing of index-guiding microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) and conventional single-mode fibers (SMFs) can be achieved by enlarging the mode field diameter of MOFs, which leads to an optimum mode field match at the joint interface. We study analytically the low-loss fusion splicing between an MOF and an SMF by expanding the modal field of MOF, using the controlled air-hole collapse method. Our method is simple and offers analytical solution for light coupling between MOFs and SMFs. Comparisons with available experimental and simulation results have also been included.  相似文献

基于超格子构造法,采用全矢量模型计算了光子晶体光纤的模场半径,由此出发理论分析了光子晶体光纤与普通单模光纤之间接续损耗分别受横向偏移、轴向倾斜以及模场不匹配的影响,给出了光子晶体光纤在部分常用结构参量区域{Λ,d/Λ}内与SMF-28接续损耗的理论值,讨论了光子晶体光纤各结构参量与接续损耗之间的关系。并简要分析了不同结构光子晶体光纤之间的接续损耗。结果表明,接续损耗对横向偏移和轴向倾斜都非常敏感;孔距是决定接续损耗大小最主要的因素;与普通单模光纤接续,当光子晶体光纤的孔距比该单模光纤纤芯半径大一些时,接续损耗比较小;两种不同结构光子晶体光纤之间的接续损耗大小最主要取决于它们孔距的差异。  相似文献

In this paper we present an analytical formula for bending loss oscillations in photonic crystal fibers (PCFs). We follow the approach originally adopted for conventional double-clad fibers and show that it can be applied to PCFs by substituting the structural parameters of the conventional fiber by their PCF counterparts. We then examine the spectral dependence of the critical bending radius and the position of the first order loss peak as a function of structural parameters of the PCF cladding such as the fill factor and the number of hole rings. Finally, we evaluate the precision of the analytical model by comparing the results to finite element calculations for a selection of PCF geometries.  相似文献

利用矢量有效折射率方法对光子晶体光纤(PCF)的色散补偿特性进行了数值模拟,研究发现通过调节光子晶体光纤包层的空气穴节距或空气穴大小可以灵活地设计光子晶体光纤的色散系数D、色散斜率Dslope以及κ值,可以设计在波长1.55μm附近具有较大绝对值的正常色散和负色散斜率的色散补偿光子晶体光纤,使光通信中的普通单模光纤(G.652)或非零色散位移光纤(G.655)在1.55μm低损耗窗口得到较好的色散补偿.数值模拟和分析表明色散补偿光子晶体光纤的研制具有很大的发展潜力. 关键词: 光子晶体光纤 色散 色散斜率 色散补偿  相似文献

A novel kind of large mode area photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) are proposed in this paper. In order to achieve large effective mode area, a novel technique is applied to seven missing air hole PCF structures. The modal characteristics of PCF structures such as effective mode area, confinement loss, chromatic dispersion properties with doped cores, are investigated by employing the full vectorial finite element method (FEM). Simulation results demonstrate that effective mode area and confinement losses of fundamental mode simultaneously improved by applying our novel technique to proposed structures. The effects of bending on confinement losses of the proposed PCFs have been thoroughly investigated. Additionally, confinement losses of first higher order modes are presented and the possibility of stripping them in a simple way is discussed.  相似文献

An investigation of different types of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs), in respect of mode formation, is presented using computer simulations. In the investigative approach, we numerically solved Maxwell's equations for PCFs. In particular, we performed modal analysis for three different types of PCFs, namely Bragg fibers, index-guiding PCFs and photonic bandgap PCFs. Through simulations, we demonstrated the distribution of electric/magnetic fields as well as the propagation of power in different types of PCF structures. Simulation results reveal potentials of implementing PCFs (over conventional fibers) for the guidance of electromagnetic waves in nanophotonic waveguidance systems.  相似文献

The most common methods applied in the analysis of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) are finite difference time/frequency domain (FDTD/FDFD) method and finite element method (FEM). These methods are very general and reliable (well tested). They describe arbitrary structure but are numerically intensive and require detailed treatment of boundaries and complex definition of calculation mesh. So these conventional models that simulate the photonic response of PCFs are computationally expensive and time consuming. Therefore, a practical design process with trial and error cannot be done in a reasonable amount of time. In this article, an artificial intelligence method such as Neuro–Fuzzy system is used to establish a model that can predict the properties of PCFs. Simulation results show that this model is remarkably effective in predicting the properties of PCF such as dispersion, dispersion slope and loss over the C communication band.  相似文献

通过加热光子晶体光纤,其包层中空气孔由于表面张力的作用而塌缩减小。理论和实验结果表明,空气孔的塌缩在满足波导的渐变条件下,引入的能量损耗非常小。空气孔的塌缩减小,可以有效地增加光子晶体光纤的模场直径,从而不仅可以提高光耦合的效率和光纤端面的损伤阈值,而且可以降低与其它模场直径不匹配的普通光纤的熔接损耗。  相似文献

Cladding-ring-equivalent effective index method (CREEIM) is proposed to analyze the propagation characteristics in the multi-cladding photonic crystal fibers (MCPCFs). The effective indices and dispersions of the step index two and three-cladding structures are calculated with the Sellmeier formula. The accuracy of CREEIM is competitive to the results calculated by the multipole method (MPM). With different structure parameters, the differences between two methods are evaluated with the relative error RE of effective index and relative difference RD of dispersion. This method is also used to analyze the mode cut-off and nonlinear characteristics in the three-cladding structure PCFs by calculating the mode effective index neff instead of complex mode field distribution.  相似文献

设计了一种三芯光子晶体光纤带通滤波器结构.利用纤芯间的谐振耦合,实现了滤波.当3个纤芯基模模式有效折射率在同一频率点实现匹配时,将产生谐振现象.通过合理选取光纤结构参数,可以使3个模式满足谐振条件.由于3个纤芯基模只在工作波长处实现有效折射率的匹配,因而纤芯间发生波长的选择性耦合.应用全矢量光束传播法(BPM)分析了这种光纤带通滤波器的性能.结果表明:在1.55 μm工作波长上,光纤耦合长度为22.8 mm;在损耗低于-3 dB前提下,通带带宽为8.9 nm.  相似文献

An in-fiber modal interferometer is demonstrated by splicing a section of homemade dual-concentric-core photonic crystal fiber (DCCPCF) and two segments of single-mode fibers (SMFs) with collapsing the air holes in the splice regions. By analyzing the transmission spectra and the spatial frequency spectra of the interferometers, it's observed that the main interfering modes are the high-order ring modes, which are different from the previously reported interferometers using the single-, few- or multi-mode fibers. The influences of the lengths of DCCPCF and the first collapsed region on the interferometers were investigated experimentally. The strain, temperature and refractive index characteristics of the interferometer were analyzed.  相似文献

A kind of highly birefringent quinquangular-core photonic crystal fiber(Q-PCF) structure is proposed and analyzed by full-vector finite element method(FEM) . The modal field,effective index,and birefringence properties are investigated. From the numerical results,it is found that the birefringence of the new polarization-maintaining PCFs is at least five times larger than that of the standard highly birefringent hexagonal PCFs(H-PCFs) with the same hole pitch,hole diameter,and whole hole area as that of the new PCFs at 1 550 nm. Moreover,the modal field of the new PCFs could be better restricted than that of the standard highly birefringent H-PCFs;hence,the loss of fibers could be reduced.  相似文献

We constructed optical-fiber-based THz time-domain spectrometers (THz TDSs) with standard single-mode fibers (SSMFs) and large-mode-area photonic crystal fibers (LMA PCFs) and compared those to THz waves and spectra. The optical fibers are used for guiding optical pulses from ultra-fast lasers to a THz emitter and detector. The LMA-PCF-based THz TDS exhibits increased bandwidth from 1 to 2 THz and increased field amplitude by a factor of four compared with the SSMF-based THz TDS under the relatively higher excitation power of ultra-fast lasers. This improvement results from LMA PCFs that are suitable for high-power transmission without introducing nonlinear effects. We also fabricated compact THz emitter and detector module heads, which are connected with LMA PCFs. The LMA-PCF-based THz TDS had THz radiation power and bandwidth comparable with those obtained by a conventional THz TDS with a free-space optical arrangement. We present the dispersion and Raman amplification characteristics of As2Se3 photonic crystal fibers (PCFs). We compare the gain characteristics with conventional As2Se3 fibers and find that the Raman gain efficiency in PCFs can be improved by a factor of more than 4. This allows us to either use a small length of the fiber or to use the low pump power to attain similar gain characteristics. Numerical simulations reveal that a peak gain of 10 dB can be achieved in a 1.1 m long PCF when it is pumped at 1.5 microm in wavelength with an input power of 500 mW.  相似文献

We present a two-dimensional modal approach for the evaluation, in an analytical manner, of chromatic dispersion in any kind of optical fiber. It combines an iterative Fourier technique to compute the propagation constant at any fixed wavelength and an analytical procedure to calculate its derivatives. The proposed formulation takes into account the effective anisotropy of the interfaces and allows us to deal with microstructured fibers, in general, and specifically with realistic photonic crystal fibers (PCFs), including arbitrary spatial refractive-index distributions of dispersive and absorbing materials. This fast and accurate numerical technique is extremely useful for both analysis and design. We show some results of analysis of PCFs with high anisotropy, and we also describe PCFs with new dispersive properties.  相似文献
