Using a technique that consists in ionizing atoms out of the 5P 1/2 fragments originated in the cold collision process, we have measured the contribution of the fine structure changing collision (FS) to the total trap loss rate of cold 85Rb. Our results show that FS contribution is responsible for about 4% of the total trap loss. This result should stimulate new theoretical discussions involving exoergic cold collisions. We propose a new method to cool gaseous samples of neutral atoms. The gas is confined in a non dissipative optical trap in the presence of an homogeneous magnetic field. The method accumulates atoms in the m F =0 Zeeman sub-level. Cooling occurs via collisions that produce atoms in states. Thanks to the second order Zeeman effect kinetic energy is transformed into internal energy and recycling of atoms is ensured by optical pumping. This method may allow quantum degeneracy to be reached by purely optical means. Received 10 May 2000  相似文献

We present the first simultaneous trapping of two different ultracold atomic species in a conservative trap. Lithium and cesium atoms are stored in an optical dipole trap formed by the focus of a CO2 laser. Techniques for loading both species of atoms are discussed and observations of elastic and inelastic collisions between the two species are presented. A model for sympathetic cooling of two species with strongly different mass in the presence of slow evaporation is developed. From the observed Cs-induced evaporation of Li atoms we estimate a cross-section for cold elastic Li-Cs collisions. Received: 1 August 2001 / Published online: 23 November 2001  相似文献

The total rate coefficient k for the energy pooling process has been measured in dependence on the ratio of the number densities of the Cs 6P fine-structure sublevels. The measurements were performed applying the laser fluorescence method. From the set of the obtained data for k, the rate coefficients for the particular collisions were derived. The obtained values for the and collisions at T = 600 K are , and , respectively. The value for k1 and the estimate for k3 are consistent with the data previously published by other authors. The rate coefficient k2 is reported for the first time. Received: 10 June 1997 / Revised: 13 October 1997 / Accepted: 5 January 1998  相似文献

The electronic structure of LiMnO2 and Li2MnO3 was studied by means of X-ray photoelectron and soft X-ray emission spectroscopy. For LiMnO2, LSDA and LSDA+U calculations were carried out. The LSDA+U calculations are in rather good agreement with the measured valence-band structure as well as with the magnetic and electrical properties of LiMnO2. It is shown that the band gap in LiMnO2 is determined by the charge-transfer effect. Received 15 March 1999 and Received in final form 14 July 1999  相似文献

Laser-microwave double and triple resonance experiments were performed on clouds of Ba+ ions confined in a Penning ion trap to induce and detect electronic and nuclear spin flip transitions. Collisions with buffer gas molecules in the trap was used to reduce the lifetime of a long lived metastable state of the ions, in which population trapping might occur, and to cool the ions to the ambient temperature. Loss of ions from the trap by collisions were prevented by coupling the magnetron and reduced cyclotron motions by an additional r.f. field at the sum frequency of the two motions. Electronic Zeeman transitions in 138Ba+ and 135Ba+ were observed at a full width of about 3 kHz at a transition frequency of 80 GHz. The uncertainty of the line center was . From the magnetic field calibration by the cyclotron resonance of electrons stored in the same trap the gJ-factor for both isotopes could be determined to . From radiofrequency induced transitions of 135Ba+ the nuclear g-factor could be determined . Both measurements improve earlier results by about one order of magnitude. We study anomalous J/Ψ suppression and p t broadening in the model of prompt gluons. The anomalous suppression can be successfully described in this model. The transverse-momentum dependence of J/Ψ suppression in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is calculated from initial-state gluon rescattering with both nucleons and prompt gluons produced in nucleon-nucleon collisions in the early phase of the reaction. It seems impossible to describe simultaneously anomalous suppression and p t broadening in Pb-Pb collisions within the model of prompt gluons with reasonable values of the parameters. The non-linear Voigt effect has been studied in He discharge under resonance laser interaction with the He transition. The range of non-linear signal existence was determined. The contribution of the lower and upper states to the overall signal was analyzed. The cross-section for depolarizing collisions with ground state He atoms was estimated for the 33 D 2,3 He state. We investigate the production of long-lived metastable (43 P 2 ) calcium atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT) operating on the 41 S 0 ?41 P 1 transition at 423 nm. For excited 41 P 1 atoms a weak decay channel into the triplet states 43 P 2 and 43 P 1 exists via the 31 D 2 state. The undesired 43 P 1 atoms decay back to the ground state within 0.4 ms and can be fully recaptured if the illuminated trap volume is sufficientlylarge. We obtain a flux of above 1010 atoms/s into the 43 P 2 state. We find that our MOT lifetime of 23 ms is mainly limited by this loss channel, and thus the 43 P 2 production is not hampered by inelastic collisions. If we close the loss channel by repumping the 31 D 2 atoms with a 671 nm laser back into the MOT cycling transition, a non-exponential 72 ms trap decay is observed, indicating the presence of inelastic two-body collisions between 41 S 0 and 41 P 1 atoms. We have measured attenuation cross sections and fragmentation cross sections for protonated water clusters H(H2O)n + (n = 1 to 100) colliding with noble gas atoms (He and Xe) at a laboratory energy of 50 keV. In collisions with He, a transparency effect in the attenuation cross section was observed. For the case of fragmentation in collisions with Xe, a strong enhancement of small clusters was observed which we attribute to multifragmentation. Received 30 November 2000  相似文献

Singly charged silver-cluster anions are produced in a laser vaporization source and transferred into a Penning trap. After size selection the clusters are subjected to an electron bath in the trap, which results in the attachment of further electrons. The relative abundance of dianions or trianions as a function of the clusters' size is analyzed by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Silver-cluster dianions are observed for sizes n≥ 24 and trianions for n > 100. In addition, a detailed study of the cluster sizes 24 ?n? 60 shows a pronounced resistance to electron attachment for singly charged anions Agn - with a closed electronic shell, in particular Ag29 -, Ag33 -, and Ag39 -. Both the threshold size for the observation of dianionic silver clusters and the shell effects in the production yield correlate favorably with previous theoretical investigations of the respective electron affinities. We simulated the field-dependent magnetization m(H,T) and the uniform susceptibility of classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets in the chain and square-lattice geometry using Monte Carlo methods. The results confirm the singular behavior of at small T,H: and , where D=3 is the number of spin components, J 0=zJ, and z is the number of nearest neighbors. A good agreement is achieved in a wide range of temperatures T and magnetic fields H with the first-order 1/D expansion results (D.A. Garanin, J. Stat. Phys. 83, 907 (1996)). Electron capture by Ar8+ in collisions with C60 fullerene has been investigated using coincident measurements of the number n of ejected electrons, the mass and charge of multicharged Cr+ 60 recoil ions and their fragments Ci+ m and the final charge state of outgoing projectiles Ar(8-s)+ (). The number of captured electrons r is the sum of the numbers of stabilized and emitted electrons: r = n + s. The ratio n / s decreases by a factor three with s increasing from 1 to 7 showing that the multiply excited states populated by capture of a large number of electrons are rather stable against auto-ionisation. Each kinetic energy spectrum of Ar+ and Ar2+ projectiles is composed of two peaks which we attribute to collisions “inside” and “outside” the C60 cage. The measured energy shift of the projectile keV is consistent with the corresponding energy loss keV in a carbon foil with an equivalent thickness. Inside collisions are characterized by a strong dissociation of recoil ions into light monocharged fragments and by a high multiplicity of ejected electrons. We investigate collisional properties of lithium and cesium which are simultaneously confined in a combined magneto-optical trap. Trap-loss collisions between the two species are comprehensively studied. Different inelastic collision channels are identified, and inter-species rate coefficients as well as cross-sections are determined. It is found that loss rates are independent of the optical excitation of Li, as a consequence of the repulsive Li*-Cs interaction. Li and Cs loss by inelastic inter-species collisions can completely be attributed to processes involving optically excited cesium (fine-structure changing collisions and radiative escape). By lowering the trap depth for Li, an additional loss channel of Li is observed which results from ground-state Li-Cs collisions changing the hyperfine state of cesium. Triple differential cross-sections (TDCS) for ( e ,2 e ) processes on C60 have been calculated in the plane wave Born and distorted wave Born approximations using a jellium shell model to describe the target valence states. The peculiarities of these TDCS are demonstrated by comparison with results for atomic hydrogen. Ionisation into a resonant state leads to dramatic modifications of the TDCS. This effect could also be observed in a surface ( e ,2 e ) experiment in specular geometry using a thin film of physisorbed C60. Prompt gluons are an additional source for charmonium suppression in nuclear collisions, in particular for nucleus-nucleus collisions. These gluons are radiated as bremsstrahlung in N-N collisions and interact inelastically with the charmonium states while the nuclei still overlap. The spectra and mean number <n g> of the prompt gluons are calculated perturbatively and the inelastic cross section σabs Ψg is estimated. The integrated cross sections σ(A B →JX) for p-A and A-B collisions and the dependence on transverse energy for S-U and Pb-Pb can be described quantitatively with some adjustment of one parameter <n gabs Ψg. The quenching of metastable states of antiprotonic helium by collisions with hydrogen and deuterium molecules was studied. A systematic investigation of the delayed annihilation time spectra at various H2 and D2 admixture ratios at the ppm level revealed characteristic changes of their shape, which indicated a strong principal and orbital quantum number dependent quenching of levels in both cases. Applying a laser spectroscopy technique to measure the lifetimes of individual states and cascades we deduced H2 and D2 quenching cross-sections for the states (n, l )= (39, 35) and (37, 34). These cross-sections establish for D2 molecules the strong increase of the quenching efficiency with increasing principal quantum number n of the state under investigation previously reported for the case of H2 admixtures. Our experiments indicate that the low-n state (37, 34) is somewhat less affected by D2 than by H2, while the high-n state (39, 35) is equally quenched by both isotopes. Production cross-sections of charged pions, kaons and antikaons have been measured in C+C and C+Au collisions at beam energies of 1.0 and 1.8 AGeV for different polar emission angles. The kaon and antikaon energy spectra can be described by Boltzmann distributions whereas the pion spectra exhibit an additional enhancement at low energies. The pion multiplicity per participating nucleon M+)/<A part> is a factor of about 3 smaller in C+Au than in C+C collisions at 1.0 AGeV whereas it differs only little for the C and the Au target at a beam energy of 1.8 AGeV. The K+ multiplicities per participating nucleon M(K+)/ <A part> are independent of the target size at 1 AGeV and at 1.8 AGeV. The K- multiplicity per participating nucleon M(K-)/ <A part> is reduced by a factor of about 2 in C+Au as compared to C+C collisions at 1.8 AGeV. This effect might be caused by the absorption of antikaons in the heavy target nucleus. Transport model calculations underestimate the K-/K+ ratio for C+C collisions at 1.8 AGeV by a factor of about 4 if in-medium modifications of K-mesons are neglected. We present experimental results on the two-body loss rates in a magneto-optical trap of metastable helium atoms. Absolute rates are measured in a systematic way for several laser detunings ranging from -5 to -30 MHz and at different intensities, by monitoring the decay of the trap fluorescence. The dependence of the two-body loss rate coefficient β on the excited state ( 23 P 2) and metastable state ( 23 S 1) populations is also investigated. From these results we infer a rather uniform rate constant K sp = (1±0.4)×10-7 cm3/s. Received 8 September 2000 and Received in final form 19 December 2000  相似文献

We recently observed a Bose-Einstein condensate in a dilute gas of 4He in the 23S1 metastable state. In this article, we describe the successive experimental steps which led to the Bose-Einstein transition at 4.7 μK: loading of a large number of atoms in a MOT, efficient transfer into a magnetic Ioffé-Pritchard trap, and optimization of the evaporative cooling ramp. Quantitative measurements are also given for the rates of elastic and inelastic collisions, both above and below the transition. Received 15 October 2001  相似文献
