Cadmium ions trapped in a linear Paul trap have been laser cooled by use of a microwave transition as a repumping process. A 15.2-GHz microwave transition between a ground-state hyperfine splitting is used for repumping, while an all-solid-state laser with the wavelength of 214 nm drives the cooling transition between the 2 S 1/2 and 2 P 3/2 states. A phase transition from the cloud state to the crystal state of trapped ions has been observed both in fluorescence spectra and in images of an ion string. Cadmium ions have potential of application for quantum information processing where the ground-state microwave transition is used for both a repumping process and manipulation of quantum states of trapped ions. + ions. The Ca+ ions are trapped in a miniature rf Paul trap and irradiated by light from a frequency-doubled diode laser at 397 nm and by light from a diode laser at 866 nm. We are able to cool a single ion and observe its fluorescence continuously with the laser diode locked to the external frequency-doubling cavity. Quantum jumps in the fluorescence light of a single ion and of a small cloud of five ions have been induced by driving the “clock” transition at 729 nm. Using optical Ramsey interferometry, we precisely measure the laser-induced ac-Stark shift on the S(1/2)-D(5/2) "quantum bit" transition near 729 nm in a single trapped 40Ca+ ion. We cancel this shift using an additional laser field. This technique is of particular importance for the implementation of quantum information processing with cold trapped ions. As a simple application we measure the atomic phase evolution during a n x 2 pi rotation of the quantum bit.  相似文献

Europium (Eu+) ions were confined in a Paul trap and detected by non-destructive method. Storage time of Eu+ ions achieved in vacuum was improved by orders of magnitude employing buffer gas cooling. The experimentally detected signal was fitted to the ion response signal and the total number of ions trapped was estimated. It is found that the peak signal amplitude as well as the product of FWHM and the peak signal amplitude is proportional to the total number of trapped ions. The trapped ion secular frequency was swept at different rates and its effect on the absorption line profile was studied both experimentally and theoretically.  相似文献

In the scheme each ion does not need to be exactly positioned at the node of the standing wave, which is very important from viewpoint of experiment, Furthermore, our scheme may allow the generation of a superposition of coherent states with large mean phonon number for a large number of trapped ions in a fast way by choosing suitable laser intensity. Be+ ions trapped in a Penning trap are laser-cooled to about 10 mK. The excitation spectra of ion clouds containing about 500 ions are obtained by scanning the frequency of the cooling laser and discontinuities in these spectra are observed because of phase transitions. When the cooled ions are heated electrically by applying an rf voltage, no phase transition occurs and the spectra become continuous. Two-dimensional measurement of the ion clouds is carried out and the abrupt change in the shape of the ion cloud due to the phase transition is observed. When many ions are trapped and cooled, the phase transition occurs partially and a transient state where two states are mixed can be observed. The static properties of the ions are also measured by using an additional probe laser and the results of experimental measurements are compared with theoretical predictions.  相似文献

For many quantum information implementations with trapped ions, effective shuttling operations are important. Here, we discuss the efficient separation and recombination of ions in surface ion trap geometries. The maximum speed of separation and recombination of trapped ions for adiabatic shuttling operations depends on the secular frequencies the trapped ion experiences in the process. Higher secular frequencies during the transportation processes can be achieved by optimising trap geometries. We show how two different arrangements of segmented static potential electrodes in surface ion traps can be optimised for fast ion separation or recombination processes. We also solve the equations of motion for the ion dynamics during the separation process and illustrate important considerations that need to be taken into account to make the process adiabatic.  相似文献

A Wigner crystal formed with trapped ions can undergo a structural phase transition, which is determined only by the mechanical conditions on a classical level. Instead of this classical result, we show that through consideration of quantum and thermal fluctuation, a structural phase transition can be driven solely by a change in the system's temperature. We determine a finite-temperature phase diagram for trapped ions using the renormalization group method and the path integral formalism, and propose an experimental scheme to observe the predicted temperature-driven structural phase transition, which is well within the reach of the current ion trap technology.  相似文献

The effect of deviations from isothermality of ions on arbitrary amplitude dust-acoustic solitary structures is studied in an unmagnetized dusty plasma which consists of a negative charged dust fluid, free electrons and hot ions obeying a trapped distribution. For the finite deviation from isothermality of ions, the basic properties of large amplitude solitary waves are studied by employing pseudo-potential approach. It is shown that the effect of such ion behavior changes the maximum values of the Mach number and the amplitude for which solitary wave can exist. For the case that the deviation from isothermality due to nonlinear resonant particle effects is small, calculations by reductive perturbation method leads to a generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation with mixed nonlinearity. The latter admits a stationary dust-acoustic solitary solution with similar width and qualitatively different amplitude in comparison to the case that deviations from isothermality are finite. Furthermore, effects of the equilibrium free electron density and such trapped ions on the amplitude of solitary structures imply a non-uniform transition from the Boltzmann ion distribution to the trapped ion one.  相似文献

Laser spectroscopy of trapped ions is likely to be limited by the availability of suitable detection systems for fluorescence photons, especially in the infrared transition frequency domain. This restriction can be circumvented when ions are stored in a Penning trap with an additional magnetic field inhomogeneity which couples the ion oscillation frequencies to the oscillation energies in a well-defined way. In such a case, laser cooling (or heating) on the optical transition of interest can be detected electronically by a corresponding shift of the ion oscillation frequency. Thereby, the transition of interest can be determined with high accuracy using only a single stored ion and in absence of any optical detection system.  相似文献

利用Nd∶YAG激光作用于真空腔内的高纯固体钼(Mo)靶产生等离子体,并测量了不同脉冲激光功率密度下Mo等离子体在2~9 nm范围内的时间积分光谱。基于碰撞辐射平衡模型(CRM)和Cowan程序计算得到不可分辨跃迁峰(UTA)原子光谱数据,并假设谱线展宽为高斯线形,获得了在不同电子温度和电子密度下的理论模拟光谱,模拟光谱与实验光谱吻合的较好。实验与理论研究光谱表明:Mo ⅩⅥ-Mo ⅩⅫ离子的3d-4f不可分辨跃迁峰位于水窗波段,通过控制脉冲激光参数和采用合适的等离子体约束条件,获得水窗辐射波段Mo离子的高丰度布居,有望将激光Mo等离子用于单脉冲活体细胞显微成像水窗光源。  相似文献

We propose a fast scheme to generate the quantum-interference states of N trapped ions. In the scheme the ions are driven by a standing-wave laser beam whose carrier frequency is tuned such that the ion transition can take place. We also propose a simple and fast scheme to produce the GHZ state of N hot trapped ions and this scheme is insensitive to the heating of vibrational motion, which is important from the viewpoint of decoherence.  相似文献

We report laser cooling of trapped 171Yb+ ions. The ions are confined in a linear Paul trap. Temperatures below 1 K have been achieved, and evidence of a phase transition to a crystal-like state has been observed. The metastable 2 D 3/2 level is drained using a transition at 609.1 nm not previously used for this purpose. Laser cooling of 171Yb+ may be of importance to the development of new microwave frequency standards.  相似文献

We propose a method to determine the optimal power of the microwave resonance transition that simultaneously improves the signal-to-noise ratio and reduces line width based on saturation broadening theory and experiment.Saturation broadening spectra of the ground state hyperfine transition of trapped ~(199)Hg~+ ions are measured and analyzed.The value of the optimal microwave power is obtained by using the proposed method and is verified.Rabi oscillations decay spectra of trapped ~(199)Hg~+ ions are observed and the optimal microwave irradiation time for the maximum transition signal intensity is determined.This work will help to improve the short-term frequency stability of the mercury ion microwave frequency standard.  相似文献

Stable, narrow-linewidth optical sources are necessary in modern atomic physics. An appealing approach to achieving approximately 10 kHz frequency stability is optical feedback. We have designed a compact external cavity diode laser with optical feedback to a filter cavity mounted on a single baseplate and enclosed inside a vacuum sealed box. The design was implemented for three wavelengths addressing the 422 nm cooling, 1091 nm repumping, and 674 nm clock transition lines of Sr(+). We are able to cool a single, trapped strontium ion to approximately 2 mK and observe motional sidebands of the 5S(1/2) <--> 4D(5/2) transition.  相似文献

We report optical absorption imaging of ultracold neutral strontium plasmas. The ion absorption spectrum determined from the images is Doppler broadened and thus provides a quantitative measure of the ion kinetic energy. For the particular plasma conditions studied, ions heat rapidly as they equilibrate during the first 250 ns after plasma formation. Equilibration leaves ions on the border between the weakly coupled gaseous and strongly coupled liquid states. On a longer time scale of microseconds, pressure exerted by the trapped electron gas accelerates the ions radially.  相似文献

We propose an experimental scheme to simulate and observe the Klein tunneling of relativistic Maxwell particles with trapped ions. We explore the scattering dynamics of the pseudospin-one Maxwell particles and demonstrate that the scattered state should be a superposition of a reflection state, a localization state, and a transmission state. The probabilities of these states can be analytically obtained by the approach of Landau-Zener transition. We further show that the Maxwell Hamiltonian and the associated scattering dynamics can be mimicked with two trapped ions. The Maxwell spinors are encoded by three internal states of the first ion, the position and momentum are described by those of the motional modes, and the desired linear potential barrier is built by the second ion.  相似文献

We propose a scheme to generate entangled coherent states for the vibrational modes of N trapped ions. In the scheme the first ion is sequentially excited by two travelling wave laser fields tuned to the ion transition. A novel approach to optics integration in ion traps is demonstrated based on a surface electrode ion trap that is microfabricated on top of a dielectric mirror. Additional optical losses due to fabrication are found to be as low as 80 ppm for light at 422 nm. The integrated mirror is used to demonstrate light collection from, and imaging of, a single Sr88(+) ion trapped 169±4 μm above the mirror.  相似文献
