Systematic measurements of swelling of CR-39 nuclear track detector (NTD) due to irradiation with fission fragments and alpha particles over a wide range of fluences from 252Cf are presented here. Precisely designed and optimized exposure and chemical etching experiments were employed to unfold the structure of radiation induced surface damage. Delays in the startup of the chemical etching of latent tracks in low radiation fluence detectors are measured and are found to contain important information about structure of the surface damage. Simple atomic scale pictures of radiation induced surface damage and its chemical etching are developed using measurements of radiation induced swelling of CR-39 detectors and nuclear track parameters. The computer code SRIM2010 was utilized for the calculations of basic features of latent tracks of fission fragments and alpha particles in CR-39. Another computer code TRACK_VISION was used to compute parameters of etched tracks. Computations and experimental findings in the paper coherently compose a realistic picture of radiation damage.  相似文献

The results of an experimental work aimed at improving the performance of the CR-39 nuclear track detector for neutron dosimetry applications are reported. A set of CR-39 plastic detectors was exposed to 252Cf neutron source, which has the emission rate of 0.68 × 108 s−1, and neutron dose equivalent rate 1 m apart from the source is equal to 3.8 mrem/h. The detection of fast neutrons performed with CR-39 detector foils, subsequent chemical etching and evaluation of the etched tracks by an automatic track counting system was studied. It is found that the track density increases with the increase of neutron dose and etching time. The track density in the detector is directly proportional to the neutron fluence producing the recoil tracks, provided the track density is in the countable range. This fact plays an important role in determining the equivalent dose in the field of neutron dosimetry. These results are compared with previous work. It is found that our results are in good agreement with their investigations.   相似文献

We report the chemical etching behaviour of the CR-39 polymer detector exposed to fission fragments of 252Cf describing etchability of latent tracks, which are like nanocylinders. The fission fragment exposed detectors were etched in 1-7 N NaOH water solutions at temperatures 50-80℃ for 45 min in the case of track length and 180 min in the case of track diameter measurements. The reduced etch rate S (called here etchability) is determined using experimental results for all etching conditions and the etching conditions with the highest reduced etch are obtained. Physics and energetics of bulk and track etching are discussed. Possible effects causing spurious changes in determination of activation energy of etching are investigated.  相似文献

A review was given for our recent studies on the latent tracks in CR-39 nuclear track detector. The radial size of track core has been determined through UV spectral measurements combined to the model of track overlapping and by AFM observations of slightly etched detectors. The track core radius was found to be about a few nano-meters and almost proportional to the cubic root of stopping power. As a control study, the etching properties of CR-39, irradiated by low-LET radiation, has been examined. The observed depth dependence and dose-rate dependence of the bulk etch rate of the irradiated CR-39 were explained that the damage formation process was governed by the reaction between the radiation induced radicals and the oxygen supplied from the air. This indicated that latent tracks in CR-39 are produced through local radiation induced oxidation process along the ion paths. Studies on vibration spectra, near-IR, FT-IR and Raman spectra, of CR-39 have also been carried out to estimate the chemical structure of the latent tracks. The creation of OH group in irradiated CR-39 has been confirmed.  相似文献

Alpha particles can be detected by CR-39 by applying either chemical etching (CE), electrochemical etching (ECE), or combined pre-etching and ECE usually through a multi-step HF-HV ECE process at temperatures much higher than room temperature. By applying pre-etching, characteristics responses of fast-neutron-induced recoil tracks in CR-39 by HF-HV ECE versus KOH normality (N) have shown two high-sensitivity peaks around 5–6 and 15–16 N and a large-diameter peak with a minimum sensitivity around 10–11 N at 25°C. On the other hand, 50 Hz-HV ECE method recently advanced in our laboratory detects alpha particles with high efficiency and broad registration energy range with small ECE tracks in polycarbonate (PC) detectors. By taking advantage of the CR-39 sensitivity to alpha particles, efficacy of 50 Hz-HV ECE method and CR-39 exotic responses under different KOH normalities, detection characteristics of 0.8 MeV alpha particle tracks were studied in 500 μm CR-39 for different fluences, ECE duration and KOH normality. Alpha registration efficiency increased as ECE duration increased to 90 ± 2% after 6–8 h beyond which plateaus are reached. Alpha track density versus fluence is linear up to 106 tracks cm−2. The efficiency and mean track diameter versus alpha fluence up to 106 alphas cm−2 decrease as the fluence increases. Background track density and minimum detection limit are linear functions of ECE duration and increase as normality increases. The CR-39 processed for the first time in this study by 50 Hz-HV ECE method proved to provide a simple, efficient and practical alpha detection method at room temperature.  相似文献

The etch pit diameters of soda glass detector samples exposed to 54 132 Xe-ions of different energies are measured for different etching times after etching the detector in a ‘new etchant’ free of the adverse effect of the etch product layer. The dependence of track diameter on the energy and on the energy loss, dE/dx of 54 132 Xe-ion in soda glass has been presented. The energy resolution of soda glass and the critical angle for etching of fission fragment tracks in glass detectors have also been determined. The maximum etched track length of 54 132 Xe-ion in soda glass has been compared with the theoretical range. The effects of different annealing conditions on bulk etch rate of glass detector and on diameters of 54 132 Xe-ion tracks have been presented. Experimental results show that there is a decrease in track etch rate, etching efficiency and etchable range of 54 132 Xe-ions with annealing. The annealing of oblique tracks shows that the vertical tracks are more stable than the oblique tracks.  相似文献

In the current work, alpha particle spectroscopy is investigated experimentally by utilizing the over-etched track lengths in the CR-39 detector. CR-39 samples were exposed perpendicularly to alpha particles emitted from 241Am with an energy ranging from 0.5 to 5.5 MeV. CR-39 samples were etched in 6.25 N NaOH at (70±0.5)°C for different durations. The track diameter and track length were measured under an optical microscope. The results show that, the energy-over-etched track length calibration curve is monotonic, in other words, the over-etched track length is a monotonic function in alpha particle energy. On the other hand, the energy-diameter calibration curve is degenerated, i.e. alpha track diameter is non-monotonic function in alpha particle energy. These results suggest that the CR-39 detector could be used as a wide range alpha particles spectrometer using an energy-over-etched track length calibration curve.  相似文献

We studied the track response of CR-39 plastic nuclear track detectors (PNTD) for low (<6 MeV/n) and high (>100 MeV/n) energy heavy ions using the atomic force microscope (AFM). CR-39 PNTD was exposed to several heavy ion beams of different energy at HIMAC (Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba). For AFM measurement, the amount of bulk etch was controlled to be ∼2 μm in order to avoid etching away of short range tracks. The response data obtained by AFM for ∼2 μm bulk etch was in good agreement with data obtained by the conventional optical microscope analysis for larger bulk etch. The response data from low energy beams (stopping near the surface) was also consistent with the data from high energy beams (penetrating the detector) as a function of REL (restricted energy loss) with the δ-ray cut off energy of ω0 = 200 eV. We experimentally verified that REL (ω0 = 200 eV) gives a universal function for wide energy range in CR-39 PNTD. This work has been done as part of a basic study in the measurement of secondary short range tracks produced by target fragmentation reactions in proton cancer therapy fields.  相似文献

The application of CR-39 as a fast neutron dosimeter, based on counting elastic recoil nuclei tracks of H, C and O nuclei in a geometrically matched pair of detectors, was studied. A computer simulation of the processes during the exposure of a detector pair to neutrons is presented. The energy and spatial distribution of the recoil nuclei was calculated with the MCNP 4B program package. On the basis of this distribution, a Monte-Carlo procedure for the generation of latent tracks in the CR-39 detectors was run. Additionally, a procedure for calculation of the chemical track etching for revealing the visible track parameters was performed to obtain the detector response.  相似文献

The effect of infrared radiation on the etching characteristics of CR-39 plastic track recorder has been studied. CR-39, which is commonly employed in cosmic rays studies is found to be affected by IR radiations. The changes in the bulk etch rate, in the track etch rate and in etching efficiency due to infrared radiation exposure of CR-39 are discussed on the basis of scission and cross linking during infrared exposure.  相似文献

Triafol-TN plastic detector foils have been irradiated with238U ions of energy 16.34 MeV/u and the tracks produced have been observed using the chemical etching technique. The bulk etch rate and track etch rate are determined under successive chemical etching. In our case, the validity of Arrhenius’s law is confirmed by the fact that the same value ofE a obtained for these different concentrations, within experimental errors. The results show a linear correlation between the measured track etch rate along the track and the corresponding total energy loss rate and a threshold value of ~ 5.0 MeV/(mg/cm2) for track registration was obtained. The maximum etched track length of238U-ion in triafol-TN has been compared with the theoretically computed range.  相似文献

Compared are some of the properties of the solid state track detectors (SSTD) on the basis of nitrogen-free cellulose derivatives (cellulose acetate, triacetate and acetobutyrate), cellulose nitrate (LR-115, CN-85) and a CR-39 track detector. The optimum composition of the cellulose acetobutyrate has been established which will ensure the best mechanical properties. A simple device has been used to measure the α detection effectiveness over the energy range from 0 to 1.2 MeV of the cellulose acetobutyrate detectors in an electric field or under UV radiation or after catalytic etching. The proton detection effectiveness of the CN-85 detector has been measured. Also presented are the track autoradiograms of the distribution of B, Li, N and 3He in silicon, silicon carbide and steel.  相似文献

Etched track opening geometries in Biotite, Phlogopite and soda-lime glass irradiated with swift heavy ions [197Au(11.64 MeV/n), 136Xe(11.56 MeV/n), 58Ni(11.56 MeV/n)] at different angle of incidence have been studied using appropriate chemical etching technique. Different geometries (Hexagonal, irregular polygon, triangular in case of Biotite and Phlogopite, and circular & elliptical in case of soda lime glass detector) of heavy ion tracks are reported in the present investigations using optical microscope. The different shapes of these heavy ions track geometries are found to be related with various target-projectile parameters (viz: type of projectiles, energy, stopping power, angle of incidence of the projectile, density of defects and its reactivity with etchant, etching conditions and chemical structure of the detectors). The dependence of different shapes of heavy ion tracks in isotropic and anisotropic medium on the variation of radiation damage densities along the ion trajectories have also been discussed in the present paper.   相似文献

In this work, new empirical equation describing the charged particles radiation track development against etching time and track longitudinal depth are presented. The equation involves four free fitting parameters. It is shown that this equation can reproduce tracks depth formed on the CR-39 by alpha particles at different energies and etching times. Parameters values obtained from experimental data can be used to predict etched track lengths at different energies and etching times. The empirical equation suggested is self consistent as far as reproducing all features of track depth development as a function of etching time and energy are concerned.  相似文献

Abstract

The effects of neutron, gamma and alpha radiations on the alpha and fission fragment tracks registration and revelation properties of CR-39 detectors (CR-39 and CR-39(DOP) were studied. It was found that the ratio of the bulk etch rate of irradiated to unirradiated (VG(irr.)/VG(unirr.) detectors is linearly dependent on dose. An exponential decrease in fission track densities with increase in neutron fluence was observed. The ratio of VG(irr.)/VG(unirr.) was found to be high in CR-39 than that in CR-39(DOP) exposed to the same reactor neutron fluence. The decrease in fission track densities with increase in neutron fluence was observed to be faster in CR-39 than in CR-39(DOP). This indicates that doping with dioctyl phthalate improves the radiation resistance of CR-39 detectors. It was observed that in detectors exposed to an alpha flux of the order of 9.36 × 106 / cm2, the fission track density was reduced by 11% and thereafter it remained constant. The results also indicate that thermal neutron fluence up to 7.01 ×1011 neutrons/cm2 does not affect the alpha and fission track densities. I.R. spectra were also studied to find out the nature of chemical changes produced by these radiations on CR-39.  相似文献

1. Introduction

The study of accelerator-driven subcritical nuclear reactor has attracted the attention of nuclear physicists and engineers in the world. The main aim of the facility to be built is to generate electricity, dispose long-life radioactive wastes and find a way not to produce or produce much less radioactive wastes. One of the key components of this type of new facility is a particle accelerator, from which high energy particles, most possibly protons, impinge on a target in which high intensity of secondary neutrons are produced. These neutrons then initiate operation of a subcritical nuclear reactor. In the central part of the core of the reactor is the target. The optimization of neutron parameters in the target and the surrounding moderating materials is very important for successful operation of the reactor. This work aims to determine neutron yield, spatial distribution and energy characteristics in the target region of the accelerator. This paper reports the new results obtained by proton bombardments on U/Pb, Pb and Hg targets.

2. Experiments

The experiments were carried out at the Synchrophasotron accelerator in the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), Dubna, Russia. The beams of protons with 0.533 or 1.0 GeV from the accelerator impinge on a target U/Pb, Pb or Hg. The size of the Pb target was 8 cm in diameter and 20 cm in length (thickness). The U/Pb target was composed of a U column in the central part and a Pb sleeve (cylinder) on the column. The size of the U column was 3.6 cm in diameter and 20 cm in length. The outer diameter of the sleeve was 8 cm and the length was 20 cm. The inner diameter of the sleeve was just in contact with the outer surface of the U column. The size of Hg target was the same as the Pb target. Outside the U/Pb, Pb, or Hg target there was a cylindrical paraffin moderator with a thickness of 6 cm and length of 31 cm. Intensive secondary neutrons were produced in the U/Pb, Pb or Hg target on irradiation with protons. The neutrons were recorded with CR-39 detector strips of 20 cm in length and 1 cm in width, which were placed in the gap between the target U/Pb, Pb, or Hg and the paraffin moderator (here, we call inner CR-39 detector) as well as on the outer surface of the paraffin moderator (we call outer CR-39 detector). The length of the CR-39 strips was the same as the targets and the starting point (X=0) of the CR-39 detector was just the starting point of the targets at the upper stream end for the incident beams. The ending point (X=20 cm) of the CR-39 detectors was just the ending point of the targets at downstream for the beam. The secondary neutrons from the targets produce recoil nuclei C, O and H and other charged reaction products in the CR-39 detectors whose composition is [C12H18O7]n. The recoil nuclei and other products create tracks in the CR-39. The numbers of 0.533 GeV protons impinged on Pb and U/Pb targets were 1.52×1013 and 1.502×1013, respectively. The numbers of 1.0 GeV protons impinged on Pb, U/Pb and Hg targets were 1.91×1013, 2.03×1013 and 2.236×1013, respectively. After irradiation with secondary neutrons in each run of the experiments, the CR-39 detectors were etched in 6.5 N NaOH solution at 70°C for 45 min to develop the tracks in the detectors. The tracks at certain positions (X=0,5,10,15 and 20 cm) in each CR-39 detector were counted with track image analyzer.

3. Results

3.1. Neutron yield of Hg target

The areal track densities (ρT) were measured at different positions (X) along the CR-39 detectors on the surfaces of the U/Pb and Hg targets and the moderator for 1.0 GeV p bombardments. Track yield (Y) from a single proton is defined to be the ratio of ρT to the number of the incident protons. The track yields in the outer CR-39 detectors are shown in Fig. 1. The track yield ratio R of U/Pb to Hg targets from the above outer CR-39 detectors are shown in Fig. 2. The average value of the ratios at different places (X) is 2.00±0.11. Similar measurements with inner CR-39 detectors on the surfaces of U/Pb and Hg targets were also carried out. The track yield ratio from the inner CR-39 is 2.11±0.33, which is in agreement with the value of the outer CR-39. The final result of the track yield ratio of U/Pb to Hg target is 2.01±0.10. If we suppose that the energy spectra of neutrons from different targets and different energies of protons at different detector positions are similar and their differences would not produce a great influence on track formation in CR-39 detectors, then the track densities in the CR-39 detectors are proportional to the fluences of the secondary neutrons at the place. The track yield is approximately proportional to the neutron yield in the corresponding place. This supposition is approximately true for 44 and 18 GeV 12C+Cu interactions (Bisplinghoff et al., 1995) and further evidence is shown in this paper in the following paragraph 3.3. From Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 we can see that the neutron yield in Hg target is less than in U/Pb target. Only about half of secondary neutrons are produced in Hg target compared with U/Pb target. Similar measurements were also performed with outer CR-39 detectors for Pb and Hg targets. The track yield ratio of Pb to Hg target is 1.76±0.33 at 1.0 GeV of protons. It means that Hg target produces lesser neutrons than even a Pb target. Hg target is less preferable in order to be used as a target in the reactor from the point of view to get more secondary neutrons.  相似文献
