Adsorption of 0.5 monolayers (ML) of Sb on the Au(1 1 0) surface resulted in the formation of a c(2 × 2) surface reconstruction. Analysis of surface X-ray diffraction data by a direct method revealed the existence of an ordered substitutional surface alloy, with every other hollow site occupied by Au and Sb atoms. Quantitative conventional χ2 refinement showed a contraction of 0.12 ± 0.03 Å in the spacing of the first Au layer to the second, an expansion of 0.13 ± 0.03 Å in the second-to-third layer distance, and an inward Sb displacement (rumpling) of 0.21 ± 0.04 Å. This surface phase proved to be extremely robust, with the long-range order of this arrangement remaining up to substrate temperatures of 900 K.  相似文献

The surface relaxation and surface energy of both the mixed AuCu and pure Cu terminated Cu3Au (0 0 1) surfaces are simulated and calculated by using the modified analytical embedded-atom method. We find that the mixed AuCu termination is energetically preferred over the pure Cu termination thereby the mono-vacancy diffusion is also investigated in the topmost few layers of the mixed AuCu terminated Cu3Au (0 0 1) surface. In the mixed AuCu terminated surface the relaxed Au atoms are raised above Cu atoms for 0.13 Å in the topmost layer. All the surface atoms displace outwards, this effect occurs in the first three layers and changes the first two inter-layer spacing. For mono-vacancy migration in the first layer, the migration energies of Au and Cu mono-vacancy via two-type in-plane displace: the nearest neighbor jump (NNJ) and the second nearest neighbor jump (2NNJ), are calculated and the results show that the NNJ requires a much lower energy than 2NNJ. For the evolution of the energy requirements for successive nearest neighbor jumps (SNNJ) along three different paths: circularity, zigzag and beeline, we find that the circularity path is preferred over the other two paths due to its minimum energy barriers and final energies. In the second layer, the NN jumps in intra- and inter-layer of the Cu mono-vacancy are investigated. The calculated energy barriers and final energies show that the vacancy prefer jump up to a proximate Cu site. This replacement between the Cu vacancy in the second layer and Cu atom in the first layer is remunerative for the Au atoms enrichment in the topmost layer.  相似文献

The influence of temperature on the growth process of ultra-thin Ag and Au layers on the Mo(1 1 1) surface was investigated. At 300 K growth of the Stranski-Krastanov type was found for Ag; for Au growth of the monolayer plus simultaneous multilayers type was found, where a base layer is one physical layer. The first three geometrical adsorbed layers for Ag are thermally stable. For annealed Au layers triangle features with base side length from 15 to 35 Å were formed for θ < 6 monolayer (ML), and for θ > 6 ML part of the Au formed a flat adlayer with Au atoms grouped in equilateral triangles with side length 7 Å. The presence of Au layers does not cause faceting, layers are not smooth which could be caused by the fact that Au does not wets the substrate. For Ag thick layers reversible wetting/non-wetting transition was observed at 600 K. Ag layers on Mo(1 1 1) surface did not lead to faceting.  相似文献

The rutile (1 1 0)-aqueous solution interface structure was measured in deionized water (DIW) and 1 molal (m) RbCl + RbOH solution (pH 12) at 25 °C with the X-ray crystal truncation rod method. The rutile surface in both solutions consists of a stoichiometric (1 × 1) surface unit mesh with the surface terminated by bridging oxygen (BO) and terminal oxygen (TO) sites, with a mixture of water molecules and hydroxyl groups (OH) occupying the TO sites. An additional hydration layer is observed above the TO site, with three distinct water adsorption sites each having well-defined vertical and lateral locations. Rb+ specifically adsorbs at the tetradentate site between the TO and BO sites, replacing one of the adsorbed water molecules at the interface. There is no further ordered water structure observed above the hydration layer. Structural displacements of atoms at the oxide surface are sensitive to the solution composition. Ti atom displacements from their bulk lattice positions, as large as 0.05 Å at the rutile (1 1 0)-DIW interface, decay in magnitude into the crystal with significant relaxations that are observable down to the fourth Ti-layer below the surface. A systematic outward shift was observed for Ti atom locations below the BO rows, while a systematic inward displacement was found for Ti atoms below the TO rows. The Ti displacements were mostly reduced in contact with the RbCl solution at pH 12, with no statistically significant relaxations in the fourth layer Ti atoms. The distance between the surface 5-fold Ti atoms and the oxygen atoms of the TO site is 2.13 ± 0.03 Å in DIW and 2.05 ± 0.03 Å in the Rb+ solution, suggesting molecular adsorption of water at the TO site to the rutile (1 1 0) surface in DIW, while at pH 12, adsorption at the TO site is primarily in the form of an adsorbed hydroxyl group.  相似文献

Fine (oscillating) structure (FS) in the elastically scattered electron spectra (ESES) [O. Bondarchuk, S. Goysa, I. Koval, P. Melnik, M. Nakhodkin, Surf. Sci. 258 (1991) 239; O. Bondarchuk, S. Goysa, I. Koval, P. Melnik, M. Nakhodkin, Surf. Rev. Lett. 4 (1997) 965] was used to investigate surface structure of the SiOx (0 ≤ x ≤ 2). SiOx surface with different stoichiometry was prepared by implantation of 500 eV oxygen ions into a silicon wafer. Fourier transformation of the FS ESES contains one peak at 2.32 Å for Si, two peaks at 1.62 Å and 2.65 Å for a-SiO2 and three peaks centered at 1.6-1.7 Å, 2.1-2.2 Å and 2.65-3.04 Å for SiOx. Peaks at 1.62 Å and 2.65 Å are assigned to Si-O and O-O nearest distances correspondently. Ratio of the area under the peak at 2.65 Å to the area under the peak at 1.62 Å turned out to be not constant but grows linearly with the composition parameter x. The latter is considered to prove validity of the Random Bond Model to describe short-range order on the surface of non-stoichiometric silicon oxide.  相似文献

The morphological change of D2O layers on a Ru(0 0 0 1) surface has been investigated on the basis of He atom scattering. With the increase of D2O exposure on Ru(0 0 0 1) at 111 K, the intensity of a specularly reflected He beam continuously decreases up to the exposure of 1.0 L (Langmuir). At the D2O coverage of 1.0 adsorbed layer (∼1.5 L), which is characterized by temperature-programmed desorption measurements, the formation of the (√3 × √3)R30° superstructure as a result of the diffusion of D2O on the surface was confirmed by He atom diffraction. With the further increase of D2O exposure, at 2-3 adsorbed layers, the disordered structure was found to be on the surface at 111 K. The morphological change of the disordered layers was observed during annealing, and discussed in detail.  相似文献

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to study the clean TaB2(0 0 0 1) surface and its reaction with O2. In agreement with previous studies, XPS indicates that the clean surface is boron terminated. The topmost boron layer shows a chemically shifted B 1s peak at 187.1 eV compared to a B 1s peak at 188.6 eV for boron layers below the surface. The 187.1-188.6 eV peak intensity ratio and its variation with angle between the crystal normal and the detector is well described by a simple theoretical model based on an independently calculated electron inelastic mean free path of 15.7 Å for TaB2. The dissociative sticking probability of O2 on the boron-terminated TaB2(0 0 0 1) surface is lower by a factor of 104 than for the metal-terminated HfB2(0 0 0 1) surface.  相似文献

TiN/SiNx/TiN(0 0 1) trilayers have been deposited on MgO(0 0 1) substrates using ultra-high vacuum based reactive magnetron sputtering and studied by in situ reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED). Depositions were carried out at 500 °C and 800 °C, with SiNx layer thicknesses between 3 and 300 Å. Here, we find that SiNx(0 0 1) layers grown at 800 °C exhibit 1 × 4 surface reconstructions along orthogonal 〈1 1 0〉 directions up to a critical thickness of ∼9 Å, where an amorphous phase forms. Growth of TiN overlayers on the reconstructed SiNx(0 0 1) layers yield RHEED patterns indicating the growth of (0 0 1)-oriented epitaxial layers with a 1 × 1 reconstruction. For the case of amorphous SiNx layers the TiN overlayers grow polycrystalline.  相似文献

In this work we have performed total-energy calculations on the geometric structure and adsorption properties of Cu(1 0 0) c(2 × 2)/N surface by using the density-functional theory and the projector-augmented wave method. It is concluded that nitrogen atom was adsorbed on a FFH site with a vertical distance of 0.2 Å towards from surface Cu layer. The bond length of the shortest Cu-N bonding is calculated to be 1.83 Å. Geometry optimization calculations exclude out the possibilities of adsorbate induced reconstruction mode suggested by Driver and Woodruff and the atop structural model. The calculated workfunction for this absorbate-adsorbent system is 4.63 eV which is quite close to that of a clean Cu(1 0 0) surface. The total-energy calculations showed that the average adsorption energy per nitrogen in the case of Cu(1 0 0) c(2 × 2)-N is about 4.88 eV with respect to an isolated N atom. The absorption of nitrogen on Cu(1 0 0) surface yields the hybridization between surface Cu atoms and N, and generates the localized surface states at −1.0 eV relative to Fermi energy EF. The stretch mode of the adsorbed nitrogen at FFH site is about 30.8 meV. The present study provides a strong criterion to account for the local surface geometry in Cu(1 0 0) c(2 × 2)/N surface.  相似文献

We report first principles calculations to analyze the ruthenium adsorption and diffusion on GaN(0 0 0 1) surface in a 2×2geometry. The calculations were performed using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) with ultrasoft pseudopotential within the density functional theory (DFT). The surface is modeled using the repeated slabs approach. To study the most favorable ruthenium adsorption model we considered T1, T4 and H3 special sites. We find that the most energetically favorable structure corresponds to the Ru- T4 model or the ruthenium adatom located at the T4 site, while the ruthenium adsorption on top of a gallium atom (T1 position) is totally unfavorable. The ruthenium diffusion on surface shows an energy barrier of 0.612 eV. The resultant reconstruction of the ruthenium adsorption on GaN(0 0 0 1)- 2×2 surface presents a lateral relaxation of some hundredth of Å in the most stable site. The comparison of the density of states and band structure of the GaN(0 0 0 1) surface without ruthenium adatom and with ruthenium adatom is analyzed in detail.  相似文献

The oxidation of Ni(1 0 0) and Ni(1 1 1) at elevated temperatures and large oxygen exposures, typical of the methods used in the preparation of NiO(1 0 0) films for surface studies, has been investigated by medium energy ion scattering (MEIS) using 100 keV H+ incident ions. Oxide film growth proceeds significantly faster on Ni(1 1 1) than on Ni(1 0 0), but on both surfaces oxide penetration occurs to depths significantly greater than 100 Å with total exposures of 1200 and 6000 L respectively. The metal/oxide interface is extremely rough, with metallic Ni extending to the surface, even for much thicker oxide films on Ni(1 1 1). On Ni(1 1 1), NiO growth occurs with the (1 0 0) face parallel to the Ni(1 1 1) surface and the close-packed 〈1 1 0〉 directions parallel. On Ni(1 0 0) the MEIS blocking curves cannot be reconciled with a single orientation of NiO(1 0 0) (with the 〈1 1 0〉 directions parallel) on the surface, but is consistent with the substantial orientational disorder (including tilt) previously identified by spot-profile analysis LEED.  相似文献

We report on the precise location of Cl atoms chemisorbed on a Cu(0 0 1) surface and the interlayer relaxations of the metal surface. Previous studies have shown that chlorine dissociates on Cu(0 0 1) to form a c(2 × 2) chemisorbed layer with Cl atoms occupying four-fold hollow sites. A Cu-Cl interlayer spacing of 1.60 Å and a slightly expanded Cu-Cu first interlayer spacing of 1.85 Å (1.807 Å for bulk Cu) was determined by LEED. The resulting Cu-Cl bond length, 2.41 Å, is very similar to the SEXAFS value of 2.37 Å. Contradictory results were obtained by angle-resolved photoemission extended fine structure: while confirming the Cu-Cl interlayer spacing of 1.60 Å, no first Cu-Cu interlayer relaxation has been observed. On the other hand, a small corrugation of the second Cu layer was pointed out. We carried out a detailed structural determination of the Cu(0 0 1)-c(2 × 2)-Cl system using surface X-ray diffraction technique with synchrotron radiation. We find a Cu-Cl interlayer spacing of 1.584(5) Å and confirm the expansion of the first Cu-Cu interlayer, with an average spacing of 1.840(5) Å. In addition, we observe a small corrugation of the second Cu layer, with Cu atoms just below Cl atoms more tightly bound to the surface layer, and even a second Cu-Cu interlayer expansion.  相似文献

Porous GaAs layers were formed by electrochemical etching of p-type GaAs(1 0 0) substrates in HF solution. A surface characterization has been performed on p-type GaAs samples using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) technique in order to get information about the chemical composition, particularly on the surface contamination. According to the XPS spectra, the oxide layer on as-received porous GaAs substrates contains As2O3, As2O5 and Ga2O3. Large amount of oxygen is present at the surface before the surface cleaning.Compared to untreated GaAs surface, room temperature photoluminescence (PL) investigations of the porous layers reveal the presence of two PL bands: a PL peak at ∼871 nm and a “visible” PL peak at ∼650-680 nm. Both peak wavelengths and intensities varied from sample to sample depending on the treatment that the samples have undergone. The short PL wavelength at 650-680 nm of the porous layers is attributed to quantum confinement effects in GaAs nano-crystallites. The surface morphology of porous GaAs has been studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Nano-sized crystallites were observed on the porous GaAs surface. An estimation of the mean size of the GaAs nano-crystals obtained from effective mass theory and based on PL data was close to the lowest value obtained from the AFM results.  相似文献

A surface preparation method with fine SiO2 particles in water is developed to flatten Si(0 0 1) surfaces on the nanometer scale. The flattening performance of Si(0 0 1) surfaces after the surface preparation method is investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. The observed surface is so flat that 95% of the view area (100 × 100 nm2) is composed of only three atomic layers, namely, one dominant layer occupying 50% of the entire area and two adjacent layers. Furthermore, a magnified image shows the outermost Si atoms regularly distributed along the 〈1 1 0〉 direction on terraces.  相似文献

Direct grafting of organic monolayers on Si is of prime interest in order to give specific properties to a silicon surface. However, for microelectronics applications, this possibility is hampered by the limited stability of the grafted layers. It has been previously established that alkyl layers attached to Si surfaces through Si-C bonds become unstable at 250-300 °C, by desorption of alkenes. Changing the nature of the bonding to the surface might allow one to circumvent this desorption pathway and increase the layer stability. In our work, decanol and decyl aldehyde are reacted with the Si(1 1 1)-H surface at ∼100 °C during 20 h in order to obtain alkoxy monolayers. FTIR measurements performed in ATR geometry show that the grafted molecule surface coverage is on the order of 33% after reaction with decanol and 50% after reaction with decyl aldehyde. Characterization by AFM essentially reveals that the morphology of the grafted surfaces is unaffected as compared to that of Si-H surfaces. However, the edges of the terraces at alcohol-grafted surfaces exhibit some pitting, probably due to the presence of water in the grafting liquid. Thermal stability studies show that alkoxy chains progressively disappear from the Si surface between 200 and 400 °C. From the CH2/CH3 ratio in the CH region (2760-3070 cm−1), it appears that the chains undergo progressive dissociation by C-C bond breaking before their complete disappearance from the surface. Therefore, the thermal behaviour of alkoxy monolayers appears quite distinct from that of alkyl monolayers that tend to leave the surface in a much narrower temperature range (250-350 °C), essentially via breaking of the Si-C bonds.  相似文献

The adsorption of calcium (Ca) atoms on a Cu(0 0 1) surface has been studied by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) at 130, 300 and 400 K. It is found that a (4 × 4) was the only LEED pattern appeared at 400 K while a quasi-hexagonal structure was formed in a wide range of submonolayer coverage at 130 K. At 300 K, the (4 × 4) LEED spots were broad and weak. The (4 × 4) structure formed at 400 K was determined by a tensor LEED I-V analysis. It is a new-type of surface alloys consisting of five substitutional Ca atoms, nine surface Cu atoms, and two atomic vacancies in the unit cell. In spite of a quite large size-difference between Ca (3.94 Å) and Cu (2.55 Å) atoms, all Ca atoms are located at the substitutional sites. Among surface alloys so far reported, the atomic size ratio between Cu and Ca in the (4 × 4), 1.54, is the largest. Optimized structural parameters reveal that large lateral displacements of surface Cu atoms, being enabled by the appearance of the vacancies, allow the formation of the (4 × 4) structure.  相似文献

A study of surface and interface properties of reconstructed Au-SiC(0 0 0 1) surfaces is reported. Two reconstructions were prepared on SiC(0 0 0 1), a √3 × √3R30° and a Si-rich 3 × 3, before Au deposition and subsequent annealing at different temperatures. For the Si-rich 3 × 3 surface the existence of three stable reconstructions 2√3 × 2√3R30°, 3 × 3 and 5 × 5 are revealed after deposition of Au layers, 4-8 Å thick, and annealing at progressively higher temperatures between 500 and 950 °C. For the 2√3 surface two surface shifted Si 2p components are revealed and the Au 4f spectra clearly indicate silicide formation. The variation in relative intensity for the different core level components with photon energy suggests formation of an ordered silicide layer with some excess Si on top. Similar core level spectra and variations in relative intensity with photon energy are obtained for the 3 × 3 and 5 × 5 phases but the amount of excess Si on top is observed to be smaller and an additional weak Si 2p component becomes discernable. For the √3 surface the evolution of the core level spectra after Au deposition and annealing is shown to be distinctly different than for the Si-rich 3 × 3 surface and only one stable reconstruction, a 3 × 3 phase, is observed at similar annealing temperatures.  相似文献

Periodic-DFT has been used to study the acid-base properties of MgO(1 0 0) layers interconnected with an ice filling. The insertion of HCl by substitution of one water molecule shows that all the protons are adsorbed on the surface oxygen atoms forming hydroxyl groups; the Cl ions are weakly bound to surface cations, generating a monolayer with the adsorbed water molecules. For the insertion of NaOH also by substitution of one water molecule, it is found that OH ions remain in solution close to the Na+ ions, forming ion pairs or chains. Depending on the number of water molecules present, the sodium ions are bi-, tri- or tetra-coordinated. Finally, some aspects concerning corrosion have been highlighted.  相似文献

The adsorption of K atoms on Cu(0 0 1) has been studied by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) at room temperature (RT) and 130 K. At RT, a (3 × 2)-p2mg LEED pattern with single-domain was observed at coverage of 0.33, whereas the orthogonal two-domain was found at 130 K. At 130 K, a c(4 × 2) pattern with orthogonal two-domain was observed at coverage 0.25. Both the (3 × 2)-p2mg and c(4 × 2) structures have been determined by a tensor LEED analysis. It is demonstrated that K atoms are adsorbed on surface fourfold hollow sites in the c(4 × 2), while in the (3 × 2) structure two K atoms in the unit cell are located at an asymmetric site with a glide-reflection-symmetry. The asymmetric site is at near the midpoint between the exact hollow site and bridge-site but slightly close to the hollow site. A rumpling of 0.07 Å in the first Cu layer was confirmed, which might stabilize K atoms at the asymmetric site. Surface structures appearing in a coverage range 0.25-0.33 are discussed in terms of the occupation of the asymmetric site with increase of coverage.  相似文献

We present a comprehensive picture of structural and electronic properties of the TiC(0 0 1)(1 × 1) surface. Our investigations are based on first-principles calculations within the local-density approximation of the density-functional theory. Good agreement has been observed between our calculation and experimental data for the atomic geometry of the surface. In particular, the calculated bond lengths between the first-layer C and the second-layer Ti (d1C-2Ti = 2.188 Å) and between the first-layer Ti and the second-layer C (d1Ti-2C = 2.031 Å) are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental values of 2.25 Å and 2.14 Å, respectively. We have also identified surface electronic states and provided clear support for previously available photoemission measurements. We have further calculated surface phonon modes at the zone centre and at the zone-edge point X using a linear response scheme based on the ab initio pseudopotential method. Our calculated surface phonon results are in excellent agreement with electron energy loss spectroscopy results.  相似文献
