We study tunneling dynamics of atomic group in two-species molecular Bose-Einstein condensates. It is shown that the tunneling of the atom group depends on not only the tunneling coupling constant between the atomic pair molecular condensate and the three-atomic group molecular condensate, but also the inter-molecular nonlinear interactions and the initial number of atoms in these condensates. It is discovered that besides oscillating tunneling current between the atomic pair molecular condensate and the three-atomic group molecular condensate, the nonlinear atomic group tunneling dynamics sustains a self-maintained population imbalance: a macroscopic quantum self-trapping effect.  相似文献

Tunneling dynamics of multi-atomic molecules between atomic and multi-atomic molecular Bose-Einstein condensates with Feshbach resonance is investigated. It is indicated that the tunneling in the two Bose-Einstein condensates depends on not only the inter-atomic-molecular nonlinear interactions and the initial number of atoms in these condensates, but also the tunneling coupling between the atomic condensate and the multi-atomic molecular condensate. It is discovered that besides oscillating tunneling current between the atomic condensate and the multi-atomic molecular condensate, the nonlinear multi-atomic molecular tunneling dynamics sustains a self-locked population imbalance:a macroscopic quantum self-trapping effect. The influence of de-coherence caused by non-condensate atoms on the tunneling dynamics is studied. It is shown that de-coherence suppresses the multi-atomic molecular tunneling. Moreover, the conception of the molecular Bose-Einstein condensate, which is different from the conventional single-atomic Bose-Einstein condensate,is specially emphasized in this paper.  相似文献

It is shown that the atomic tunneling current and the Shapiro-like steps strongly depend on the initial number of atoms in each condensate and the initial phase difference between the two condensates which are initially in even(odd) coherent states. The nonlinearity of interatomic interactions in the two condensates may lead to the atomic tunneling current and Shapiro-like step between the two condensates. It is found that the interatomic nonlinear interactions can induce the atomic tunneling current and Shapiro-like step between two condensates even though there does not exist the interspecies Josephson-like tunneling coupling. The static atomic tunneling current flows in positive or negative direction, which depends on the phase difference of the two-species condensates.  相似文献

We have studied the dynamics of Bose–Einstein condensate by solving numerically the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. We examined the periodic behaviour of the condensate in a shifted harmonic potential, and further demonstrated the tunneling effect of a condensate through a Gaussian energy barrier, which is inserted after the condensate has been excited by shifting the harmonic trapping potential to a side. Moreover, it is shown that the initial condensate evolves dynamically into two separate moving condensates after the tunneling time under certain conditions.  相似文献

We propose an experiment that would demonstrate the dc and ac Josephson effects in two weakly linked Bose-Einstein condensates. We consider a time-dependent barrier, moving adiabatically across the trapping potential. The phase dynamics are governed by a "driven-pendulum" equation, as in current-driven superconducting Josephson junctions. At a critical velocity of the barrier (proportional to the critical tunneling current), there is a sharp transition between the dc and ac regimes. The signature is a sudden jump of a large fraction of the relative condensate population. Analytical results are compared with a numerical integration of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, in an experimentally realistic situation.  相似文献

We have studied quantum statistical properties in a zero-temperature two-species Bose-Einstein condensate system in the presence of the nonlinear self-interaction of each species, the interspecies nonlinear interaction, and the Jisephson-like tunneling interaction. It is found that the two condensates may periodically exhibit sub-Poissonian distribution. It is revealed that the correlation between the two condensates can be nonclassical, which means that there exists a violation of Cauchy-Schwartz inequality. The nonclassical effect about the correlation between the two condensates can be realized experimentally by properly preparing the total number of atoms in the two condensates.  相似文献

In this Letter, we investigate the effects of dipole-dipole interactions on the vortex lattices in fast rotating Bose-Einstein condensates. For single planar condensate, we show that the triangular lattice structure will be unfavorable when the s-wave interaction is attractive and exceeds a critical value. It will first change to a square lattice, and then become more and more flat with the increase of s-wave attraction, until the collapse of the condensate. For an array of coupled planar condensates, we discuss how the dipole-dipole interactions between neighboring condensates compete with quantum tunneling processes, which affects the relative displacement of two neighboring vortex lattices and leads to the loss of phase coherence between different condensates.  相似文献

We report on measurements of resonantly enhanced tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates loaded into an optical lattice. By controlling the initial conditions of our system we were able to observe resonant tunneling in the ground and the first two excited states of the lattice wells. We also investigated the effect of the intrinsic nonlinearity of the condensate on the tunneling resonances.

We calculate the geometric phase associated with the time evolution of the wave function of a Bose-Einstein condensate system in a double-well trap by using a model for tunneling between the wells. For a cyclic evolution, this phase is shown to be half the solid angle subtended by the evolution of a unit vector whose z-component and azimuthal angle are given, respectively, by the population difference and phase difference between the two condensates. For a non-cyclic evolution, an additional phase term arises. We show that the geometric phase can also be obtained by mapping the tunneling equations on to the equations of a space curve. The importance of a geometric phase in the context of some recent experiments is pointed out.  相似文献

We have observed phase singularities due to vortex excitation in Bose-Einstein condensates. Vortices were created by moving a laser beam through a condensate. They were observed as dislocations in the interference fringes formed by the stirred condensate and a second unperturbed condensate. The velocity dependence for vortex excitation and the time scale for re-establishing a uniform phase across the condensate were determined.  相似文献

A vortex can tunnel between two pinning potentials in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate on a time scale of the order of 1s under typical experimental conditions. This makes it possible to detect the tunneling experimentally. We calculate the tunneling rate by phenomenologically treating vortices as charged particles moving in an inhomogeneous magnetic field. The obtained results are in close agreement with numerical simulations based on the stochastic c-field theory.  相似文献

Superfluid-insulator transition in a periodically driven optical lattice   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We demonstrate that the transition from a superfluid to a Mott insulator in the Bose-Hubbard model can be induced by an oscillating force through an effective renormalization of the tunneling matrix element. The mechanism involves adiabatic following of Floquet states, and can be tested experimentally with Bose-Einstein condensates in periodically driven optical lattices. Its extension from small to very large systems yields nontrivial information on the condensate dynamics.  相似文献

We present analytical and numerical studies of phase-coherent dynamics of intrinsically localized excitations (breathers) in a system of two weakly coupled nonlinear oscillator chains. We show that there are two qualitatively different dynamical regimes of the coupled breathers, either immovable or slowly moving: the periodic wandering of the low-amplitude breather between the chains, and the one-chain-localization of the high-amplitude breather. These two modes of coupled breathers can be mapped exactly onto two solutions of a pendulum equation, detached by a separatrix mode. We also show that these two regimes of the coupled breathers are similar, and are described by a similar pair of equations, to the two regimes in the nonlinear tunneling dynamics of two weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. On the basis of this analogy, we predict a new tunneling mode of two weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in which their relative phase oscillates around π/2 modulo π.  相似文献

It is shown that the interaction of the Josephson degrees of freedom with states of condensate motion can produce their equilibrium bound states. As a result of the appearance of these states, first, the tunneling splitting is significantly increased in double-well trapped condensates. Second, the bound states can realize an absolute minimum of the thermodynamic energy for a sufficiently strong interaction. Transition to the new ground state is a second-order phase transition. The existence of the bound state leads to an equilibrium distortion of the condensate shape. This implies that the Josephson states can be detected by observing the change in the condensate shape.  相似文献

We consider theoretically a phase-locking transition in Bose–Einstein condensate in an optical lattice in the regime where system can realized as a three-dimensional Josephson junction array. The coherence between adjacent Bose condensates (trapped in the valleys of the periodic potential) caused by the Josephson tunneling can lead to a phase transition with a global phase coherence at certain critical temperature. Using a model Hamiltonian of Josephson weakly coupled Bose condensates we calculate the critical temperature for the three-dimensional system placed in a simple cubic lattice and discuss the result in the context of system parameters and possible experiments.  相似文献

Bose-Einstein condensates of sodium atoms, prepared in an optical dipole trap, were distilled into a second empty dipole trap adjacent to the first one. The distillation was driven by thermal atoms spilling over the potential barrier separating the two wells and then forming a new condensate. This process serves as a model system for metastability in condensates, provides a test for quantum kinetic theories of condensate formation, and also represents a novel technique for creating or replenishing condensates in new locations.  相似文献

We study the quantum coherent tunneling dynamics of two weakly coupled atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates (AMBEC). A weak link is supposed to be provided by a double-well trap. The regions of parameters where the macroscopic quantum localization of the relative atomic population occurs are revealed. The different dynamical regimes are found depending on the value of nonlinearity, namely, coupled oscillations of population imbalance of atomic and molecular condensate, including irregular oscillations regions, and macroscopic quantum self trapping regimes. Quantum means and quadrature variances are calculated for population of atomic and molecular condensates and the possibility of quadrature squeezing is shown via stochastic simulations within P-positive phase space representation method. Linear tunnel coupling between two AMBEC leads to correlations in quantum statistics.Received: 22 May 2004, Published online: 10 August 2004PACS: 03.75.-b Matter waves - 03.75.Gg Entanglement and decoherence in Bose-Einstein condensates - 03.75.Lm Tunneling, Josephson effect, Bose-Einstein condensates in periodic potentials, solitons, vortices and topological excitations - 05.30.Jp Boson systems  相似文献
