Convergence of sequences of sets of associated primes

It is a well-known result of M. Brodmann that if is an ideal of a commutative Noetherian ring , then the set of associated primes of the -th power of is constant for all large . This paper is concerned with the following question: given a prime ideal of which is known to be in for all large integers , can one identify a term of the sequence beyond which will subsequently be an ever-present? This paper presents some results about convergence of sequences of sets of associated primes of graded components of finitely generated graded modules over a standard positively graded commutative Noetherian ring; those results are then applied to the above question.

     

Behavior of the Bergman kernel and metric near convex boundary points

The boundary behavior of the Bergman metric near a convex boundary point of a pseudoconvex domain is studied. It turns out that the Bergman metric at points in the direction of a fixed vector tends to infinity, when is approaching , if and only if the boundary of does not contain any analytic disc through in the direction of .

     

On the best possible character of the norm in some a priori estimates for non-divergence form equations in Carnot groups

Let be a group of Heisenberg type with homogeneous dimension . For every we construct a non-divergence form operator and a non-trivial solution to the Dirichlet problem: in , on . This non-uniqueness result shows the impossibility of controlling the maximum of with an norm of when . Another consequence is the impossiblity of an Alexandrov-Bakelman type estimate such as

Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of simplicial semigroup rings with isolated singularity

Let be the polynomial ring in variables over a field and its graded maximal ideal. Let be homogeneous polynomials of degree generating an -primary ideal, and let be arbitrary homogeneous polynomials of degree . In the present paper it will be proved that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the standard graded -algebra is at most . By virtue of this result, it follows that the regularity of a simplicial semigroup ring with isolated singularity is at most , where is the multiplicity of and is the codimension of .

     

Associated primes of local cohomology modules

Let be an ideal of a commutative Noetherian ring and a finitely generated -module. Let be a natural integer. It is shown that there is a finite subset of , such that is contained in union with the union of the sets , where and . As an immediate consequence, we deduce that the first non- -cofinite local cohomology module of with respect to has only finitely many associated prime ideals.

     

On representable linearly compact modules

For a flat module we prove that is a functor from the category of linearly compact modules to itself and is exact. Moreover, is representable when is linearly compact and representable. This gives an affirmative answer to a question of L. Melkersson (1995) for linearly compact modules without the condition of finite Goldie dimension. The set of attached prime ideals of the co-localization of a linearly compact representable module with respect to a multiplicative set in is described.

     

Vanishing of cohomology over Gorenstein rings of small codimension

We prove that if , are finite modules over a Gorenstein local ring of codimension at most , then the vanishing of for is equivalent to the vanishing of for . Furthermore, if has no embedded deformation, then such vanishing occurs if and only if or has finite projective dimension.

     

A bound for the dimension of the automorphism group of a homogeneous compact complex manifold

Let be a homogeneous compact complex manifold, and let be the complex Lie group of holomorphic automorphisms of . Examples show that can grow exponentially in . In this note it is shown that

when . Thus, is at most exponential in . The proof relies on an upper bound for the dimension of the space of sections of the anticanonical bundle, , of a homogeneous projective rational manifold of dimension : .

     

-injective rings and -stable primes

The notion of stability of the highest local cohomology module with respect to the Frobenius functor originates in the work of R. Hartshorne and R. Speiser. R. Fedder and K.-i. Watanabe examined this concept for isolated singularities by relating it to -rationality. The purpose of this note is to study what happens in the case of non-isolated singularities and to show how this stability concept encapsulates a few of the subtleties of tight closure theory. Our study can be seen as a generalization of the work by Fedder and Watanabe. We introduce two new ring invariants, the -stability number and the set of -stable primes. We associate to every ideal generated by a system of parameters and an ideal of multipliers denoted and obtain a family of ideals . The set is independent of and consists of finitely many prime ideals. It also equals prime ideal such that is -stable. The maximal height of such primes defines the -stability number.

     

Large groups and their periodic quotients

We first give a short group theoretic proof of the following result of Lackenby. If is a large group, is a finite index subgroup of admitting an epimorphism onto a non-cyclic free group, and are elements of , then the quotient of by the normal subgroup generated by is large for all but finitely many . In the second part of this note we use similar methods to show that for every infinite sequence of primes , there exists an infinite finitely generated periodic group with descending normal series , such that and is either trivial or abelian of exponent .

     

The Banach algebra induced by a double centralizer

Given a Banach algebra , R. Larsen defined, in his book ``An introduction to the theory of multipliers", a Banach algebra by means of a multiplier on , and essentially used it in the case of a commutative semisimple Banach algebra to prove a result on multiplications which preserve regular maximal ideals. Here, we consider the analogue Banach algebra induced by a bounded double centralizer of a Banach algebra . Then, our main concern is devoted to the relationships between , , and the algebras of bounded double centralizers and of and , respectively. By removing the assumption of semisimplicity, we generalize some results proven by Larsen.

     

On strong convergence to common fixed points of nonexpansive semigroups in Hilbert spaces

In this paper, we prove the following strong convergence theorem: Let be a closed convex subset of a Hilbert space . Let be a strongly continuous semigroup of nonexpansive mappings on such that . Let and be sequences of real numbers satisfying , 0$"> and . Fix and define a sequence in by for . Then converges strongly to the element of nearest to .

     

Perturbation of Wigner matrices and a conjecture

Let be an arbitrary self-adjoint matrix and be an (random) Wigner matrix. We show that is positive definite in the average. This partially answers a long-standing conjecture. On the basis of asymptotic freeness our result implies that is positive definite whenever the noncommutative random variables and are in free relation, with semicircular.

     

The Hochschild cohomology ring of a selfinjective algebra of finite representation type

This paper describes the Hochschild cohomology ring of a selfinjective algebra of finite representation type over an algebraically closed field , showing that the quotient of the Hochschild cohomology ring by the ideal generated by all homogeneous nilpotent elements is isomorphic to either or , and is thus finitely generated as an algebra. We also consider more generally the property of a finite dimensional algebra being selfinjective, and as a consequence show that if all simple -modules are -periodic, then is selfinjective.

Hyperelliptic jacobians and simple groups

In a previous paper, the author proved that in characteristic zero the jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve has only trivial endomorphisms over an algebraic closure of the ground field if the Galois group of the irreducible polynomial is either the symmetric group or the alternating group . Local cohomology over homogeneous rings with one-dimensional local base ring

Let be a homogeneous Noetherian ring with local base ring and let be a finitely generated graded -module. Let be the -th local cohomology module of with respect to 0}R_n$">. If , the -modules , and are Artinian for all . As a consequence, much can be said on the asymptotic behaviour of the -modules for .

     

Volume preserving embeddings of open subsets of into manifolds

We consider a connected smooth -dimensional manifold endowed with a volume form , and we show that an open subset of of Lebesgue measure embeds into by a smooth volume preserving embedding whenever the volume condition is met.

     

Cancellation of direct sums of countable abelian -groups

On two problems of Erdos and Hechler: New methods in singular madness

For an infinite cardinal , denotes the set of all cardinalities of nontrivial maximal almost disjoint families over .

Erdos and Hechler proved in 1973 the consistency of for a singular cardinal and asked if it was ever possible for a singular that , and also whether for every singular cardinal .

We introduce a new method for controlling for a singular and, among other new results about the structure of for singular , settle both problems affirmatively.
