We investigate restriction theorems for hypersurfaces of revolution in with affine curvature introduced as a mitigating factor. Abi-Khuzam and Shayya recently showed that a Stein-Tomas restriction theorem can be obtained for a class of convex hypersurfaces that includes the surfaces We enlarge their class of hypersurfaces and give a much simplified proof of their result.

One way to understand the geometry of the real Grassmann manifold parameterizing oriented -dimensional subspaces of is to understand the volume-minimizing subvarieties in each homology class. Some of these subvarieties can be determined by using a calibration. In previous work, one of the authors calculated the set of -planes calibrated by the first Pontryagin form on for all , and identified a family of mutually congruent round -spheres which are consequently homologically volume-minimizing. In the present work, we associate to the family of calibrated planes a Pfaffian system on the symmetry group , an analysis of which yields a uniqueness result; namely, that any connected submanifold of calibrated by is contained in one of these -spheres. A similar result holds for -calibrated submanifolds of the quotient Grassmannian of non-oriented -planes.

We shall discuss the class of surfaces with holomorphic right Gauss maps in non-compact duals of compact semi-simple Lie groups (e.g. ), which contains minimal surfaces in and constant mean curvature surfaces in . A Weierstrass type representation formula and a Chern-Osserman type inequality for such surfaces are given.

We study a variant of the Whitney extension problem (1934) for the space . We identify with a space of Lipschitz mappings from into the space of polynomial fields on equipped with a certain metric. This identification allows us to reformulate the Whitney problem for as a Lipschitz selection problem for set-valued mappings into a certain family of subsets of . We prove a Helly-type criterion for the existence of Lipschitz selections for such set-valued mappings defined on finite sets. With the help of this criterion, we improve estimates for finiteness numbers in finiteness theorems for due to C. Fefferman.

We show the local in time well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II equation for initial data in the non-isotropic Sobolev space with and . On the scale this result includes the full subcritical range without any additional low frequency assumption on the initial data. More generally, we prove the local in time well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the following generalisation of the KP II equation:

We establish an asymptotic estimate of the lowest eigenvalue of the Schrödinger operator with a magnetic field in a bounded -dimensional domain, where curl vanishes non-degenerately, and is a large parameter. Our study is based on an analysis on an eigenvalue variation problem for the Sturm-Liouville problem. Using the estimate, we determine the value of the upper critical field for superconductors subject to non-homogeneous applied magnetic fields, and localize the nucleation of superconductivity.

We prove that for the set of Cauchy problems of dimension which have a global solution is -complete and that the set of ordinary differential equations which have a global solution for every initial condition is -complete. The first result still holds if we restrict ourselves to second order equations (in dimension one). Let be the category of chain complexes of -modules on a topological space (where is a sheaf of rings on ). We put a Quillen model structure on this category in which the cofibrant objects are built out of flat modules. More precisely, these are the dg-flat complexes. Dually, the fibrant objects will be called dg-cotorsion complexes. We show that this model structure is monoidal, solving the previous problem of not having any monoidal model structure on . As a corollary, we have a general framework for doing homological algebra in the category of -modules. I.e., we have a natural way to define the functors and in .

We study existence and multiplicity of solutions of the elliptic system

When is even in , we show that the system possesses a sequence of solutions associated with a sequence of positive energies (resp. negative energies) going toward infinity (resp. zero) if 2$"> (resp. ). All results are proved using variational methods. Some new critical point theorems for strongly indefinite functionals are proved.

The Abhyankar-Sathaye Problem asks whether any biregular embedding can be rectified, that is, whether there exists an automorphism such that is a linear embedding. Here we study this problem for the embeddings whose image is given in by an equation , where and . Under certain additional assumptions we show that, indeed, the polynomial is a variable of the polynomial ring (i.e., a coordinate of a polynomial automorphism of ). This is an analog of a theorem due to Sathaye (1976) which concerns the case of embeddings . Besides, we generalize a theorem of Miyanishi (1984) giving, for a polynomial as above, a criterion for when .

An -parameter Brownian sheet in maps a non-random compact set in to the random compact set in . We prove two results on the image-set :

(1) It has positive -dimensional Lebesgue measure if and only if has positive -dimensional capacity. This generalizes greatly the earlier works of J. Hawkes  (1977), J.-P. Kahane  (1985), and Khoshnevisan (1999).

(2) If , then with probability one, we can find a finite number of points such that for any rotation matrix that leaves in , one of the 's is interior to . In particular, has interior-points a.s. This verifies a conjecture of T. S. Mountford  (1989).

This paper contains two novel ideas: To prove (1), we introduce and analyze a family of bridged sheets. Item (2) is proved by developing a notion of ``sectorial local-non-determinism (LND).' Both ideas may be of independent interest.

We showcase sectorial LND further by exhibiting some arithmetic properties of standard Brownian motion; this completes the work initiated by Mountford (1988).
