We ask for the maximum σ n γ of Σ i,j=1 nx i-x jγ, where x 1,χ,x n are points in the Euclidean plane R 2 with ‖xi-xj‖ ≦1 for all 1≦ i,jn and where ‖.‖γ denotes the γ-th power of the Euclidean norm, γ ≧ 1. (For γ =1 this question was stated by L. Fejes Tóth in [1].) We calculate the exact value of σ n γ for all γ γ 1,0758χ and give the distributions which attain the maximum σ n γ . Moreover we prove upper bounds for σ n γ for all γ ≧ 1 and calculate the exact value of σ 4 γ for all γ ≧ 1. Given 1≦p<∞ and a real Banach spaceX, we define thep-absolutely summing constantμ p(X) as inf{Σ i =1/m |x*(x i)|p p Σ i =1/mx ip p]1 p}, where the supremum ranges over {x*∈X*; ‖x*‖≤1} and the infimum is taken over all sets {x 1,x 2, …,x m} ⊂X such that Σ i =1/mx i‖>0. It follows immediately from [2] thatμ p(X)>0 if and only ifX is finite dimensional. In this paper we find the exact values ofμ p(X) for various spaces, and obtain some asymptotic estimates ofμ p(X) for general finite dimensional Banach spaces. Let X be a normed space that satisfies the Johnson–Lindenstrauss lemma (J–L lemma, in short) in the sense that for any integer n and any x 1,…,x n X, there exists a linear mapping L:XF, where FX is a linear subspace of dimension O(log n), such that ‖x i x j ‖≤‖L(x i )−L(x j )‖≤O(1)⋅‖x i x j ‖ for all i,j∈{1,…,n}. We show that this implies that X is almost Euclidean in the following sense: Every n-dimensional subspace of X embeds into Hilbert space with distortion 22O(log*n)2^{2^{O(\log^{*}n)}} . On the other hand, we show that there exists a normed space Y which satisfies the J–L lemma, but for every n, there exists an n-dimensional subspace E n Y whose Euclidean distortion is at least 2Ω(α(n)), where α is the inverse Ackermann function.  相似文献

LetT be a Markov operator onL 1(X, Σ,m) withT*=P. We connect properties ofP with properties of all productsP ×Q, forQ in a certain class: (a) (Weak mixing theorem)P is ergodic and has no unimodular eigenvalues ≠ 1 ⇔ for everyQ ergodic with finite invariant measureP ×Q is ergodic ⇔ for everyuL 1 with∝ udm=0 and everyfL we haveN −1Σ n ≠1/N |<u, P nf>|→0. (b) For everyuL 1 with∝ udm=0 we have ‖T nu‖1 → 0 ⇔ for every ergodicQ, P ×Q is ergodic. (c)P has a finite invariant measure equivalent tom ⇔ for every conservativeQ, P ×Q is conservative. The recent notion of mild mixing is also treated. Dedicated to the memory of Shlomo Horowitz An erratum to this article is available at .  相似文献

A projectionP on a Banach spaceX with ‖P‖≤λ0 is called almost locally minimal if, for every α>0 small enough, the ballB(P,α) in the space of operatorsL(X) does not contain a projectionQ with ‖Q‖≤‖P‖(1–Dα2), whereD=D0) is a constant independent of ‖P‖. It is shown that, for everyp≥1 and every compact abelian groupG, every translation invariant projection onL p(G) is almost locally minimal. Orthogonal projections on ℓ 1 n are investigated with respect to some weaker local minimality properties. We say that a random vector X = (X 1, …, X n ) in ℝ n is an n-dimensional version of a random variable Y if, for any a ∈ ℝ n , the random variables Σa i X i and γ(a)Y are identically distributed, where γ: ℝ n → [0,∞) is called the standard of X. An old problem is to characterize those functions γ that can appear as the standard of an n-dimensional version. In this paper, we prove the conjecture of Lisitsky that every standard must be the norm of a space that embeds in L 0. This result is almost optimal, as the norm of any finite-dimensional subspace of L p with p ∈ (0, 2] is the standard of an n-dimensional version (p-stable random vector) by the classical result of P. Lèvy. An equivalent formulation is that if a function of the form f(‖ · ‖ K ) is positive definite on ℝ n , where K is an origin symmetric star body in ℝ n and f: ℝ → ℝ is an even continuous function, then either the space (ℝ n , ‖·‖ K ) embeds in L 0 or f is a constant function. Combined with known facts about embedding in L 0, this result leads to several generalizations of the solution of Schoenberg’s problem on positive definite functions.  相似文献

Some criterions in order thatl 1 embeds complementably inE Φ(μ) and inL Φ(μ) are given. It is also proved that every idealL inL Φ(μ) such thatI Φ(x/‖x‖Φ)=1 for anyxεL/{0} is contained inE Φ(μ).  相似文献

We prove that a Markov operatorT onL 1 has an invariant density if and only if there exists a densityf that satisfies lim sup n→∞T n f − f‖ < 2. Using this result, we show that a Frobenius-Perron operatorP is mean ergodic if and only if there exists a densityw such that lim sup n→∞P n f − w‖<2 for every densityf. Corresponding results hold for strongly continuous semigroups.  相似文献

We prove extensions of Menchoff's inequality and the Menchoff-Rademacher theorem for sequences {f n } ∪L p , based on the size of the norms of sums of sub-blocks of the firstn functions. The results are aplied to the study of a.e. convergence of series Σ n a n T n g/ n whenT is anL 2 -contraction,gL 2 , and {a n } is an appropriate sequence. Given a sequence {f n }∪L p (Ω, μ), 1<p≤2, of independent centered random variables, we study conditions for the existence of a set ofx of μ-probability 1, such that for every contractionT on andgL 2 (π), the random power series Σ n f n (x)T n g converges π-a.e. The conditions are used to show that for {f n } centered i.i.d. withf 1L log+ L, there exists a set ofx of full measure such that for every contractionT on andgL 2 (π), the random series Σ n f n (x)T n g/n converges π-a.e. Let μ be a measure on ℝn that satisfies the estimate μ(B r(x))≤cr α for allx ∈n and allr ≤ 1 (B r(x) denotes the ball of radius r centered atx. Let ϕ j,k (ɛ) (x)=2 nj2ϕ(ɛ)(2 j x-k) be a wavelet basis forj ∈ ℤ, κ ∈ ℤn, and ∈ ∈E, a finite set, and letP j (T)=Σɛ,k <T j,k (ɛ) j,k (ɛ) denote the associated projection operators at levelj (T is a suitable measure or distribution). IffLs p(dμ) for 1 ≤p ≤ ∞, we show thatP j(f dμ) ∈ Lp(dx) and ||P j (fdμ)||L p(dx)c2 j((n-α)/p′))||f||L p(dμ) for allj ≥ 0. We also obtain estimates for the limsup and liminf of ||P j (fdμ)||L p(dx) under more restrictive hypotheses. Communicated by Guido Weiss  相似文献

Suppose thatE is a finite-dimensional Banach space with a polyhedral norm ‖·‖, i.e., a norm such that the unit ball inE is a polyhedron. ℝ n with the sup norm or ℝ n with thel 1-norm are important examples. IfD is a bounded set inE andT:DD is a map such that ‖T(y)−T(z)‖≤ ‖yz‖ for ally andz inE, thenT is called nonexpansive with respect to ‖·‖, and it is known that for eachxD there is an integerp=p(x) such that lim j→∞ T jp (x) exists. Furthermore, there exists an integerN, depending only on the dimension ofE and the polyhedral norm onE, such thatp(x)≤N: see [1,12,18,19] and the references to the literature there. In [15], Scheutzow has raised a question about the optimal choice ofN whenE=ℝ n ,D=K n , the set of nonnegative vectors in ℝ n , and the norm is thel 1-norm. We provide here a reasonably sharp answer to Scheutzow’s question, and in fact we provide a systematic way to generate examples and use this approach to prove that our estimates are optimal forn≤24. See Theorem 2.1, Table 2.1 and the examples in Section 3. As we show in Corollary 2.3, these results also provide information about the caseD=ℝ n , i.e.,T:ℝ n →ℝ n isl 1-nonexpansive. In addition, it is conjectured in [12] thatN=2 n whenE=ℝ n and the norm is the sup norm, and such a result is optimal, if true. Our theorems here show that a sharper result is true for an important subclass of nonexpansive mapsT:(ℝ n ,‖ · ‖)→(ℝ n ,‖ · ‖). Partially supported by NSF DMS89-03018.  相似文献

The average distance theorem of Gross implies that for each realN-dimensional Banach space (N≥2) there is a unique positive real numberr(E) with the following property: For each positive integern and for all (not necessarily distinct)x 1,x 2, …,x n inE with ‖x 1‖=‖x 2‖=…=‖x n‖=1, there exists anx inE with ‖x‖=1 such that The main result of this paper shows, thatr(E)≤2−1/N for each realN-dimensional Banach spaceE (N≥2) with the so-called quasihypermetric property (which is equivalent toE isL 1-embeddable). Moreover, equality holds if and only ifE is isometrically isomorphic to ℝ N equipped with the usual 1-norm.  相似文献

E is a Banach lattice that is weakly sequentially complete and has a weak unitu. TLf n=ϕ means that the infimum of |f nϕ| andu converges strongly to zero.T is a positive contraction operator onE andA n=(1/n)(I+T+...+T n−1). Without an additional assumption onE, the “truncated limit” TLA nf need not exist forf inE. This limit exists for eachf ifE satisfies the following additional assumption (C): For everyf inE + and for every numberα>0, there is a numberβ=β(f, α) such that ifg is inE +, ‖g‖≦1, 0≦f′≦f and ‖f′‖>α then ‖f′+g‖≧‖g‖+β. For the second order derivatives of eigenvectors in a thin anisotropic heterogeneous plate Ωh, we derive estimates of their weighted L2-norms with majorants whose dependence on the plate thickness h and on the eigenvalue number is expressed explicitly. These estimates maintain the asymptotic sharpness throughout the entire spectrum, whereas inside its low-frequency band the majorants remain bounded as h → +0. The latter is a rather unexpected fact, because for the first eigenfunction u1 of a similar boundary-value problem for a scalar second order differential operator with variable coefficients, the norm ‖∇ x 2 u0; L2h)‖ is of order h−1 and grows as h tends to zero. LetK be a compact Hausdorff space, and letT be an irreducible Markov operator onC(K). We show that ifgεC(K) satisfies sup N ‖Σ j =0N T j g‖<∞, then (and only then) there existsfεC(K) with (I − T)f=g. Generalizing the result to irreducible Markov operator representations of certain semi-groups, we obtain that bounded cocycles are (continuous) coboundaries. For minimal semi-group actions inC(K), no restriction on the semi-group is needed.  相似文献

If 1<p<∞, there is a constantr p <1/2 so that ifr>r p only a bounded number of balls inl p of radiusr can be packed into the unit ball ofl p . We obtain the exact value of this bound for eachp andr as a consequence of several new inequalities relating the expressions Σλ i λ j x i x j p , Σλ i x i p and Σλ i /2 for sequences (x i ) 1 n l p and (λ i ) 1 n R.  相似文献

A sequence (μ n) of probability measures on the real line is said to converge vaguely to a measureμ if∫ fdμ n∫ fdμ for every continuous functionf withcompact support. In this paper one investigates problems analogous to the classical central limit problem under vague convergence. Let ‖μ‖ denote the total mass ofμ andδ 0 denote the probability measure concentrated in the origin. For the theory of infinitesimal triangular arrays it is true in the present context, as it is in the classical one, that all obtainable limit laws are limits of sequences of infinitely divisible probability laws. However, unlike the classical situation, the class of infinitely divisible laws is not closed under vague convergence. It is shown that for every probability measureμ there is a closed interval [0,λ], [0,e −1] ⊂ [0,λ] ⊂ [0, 1], such thatβμ is attainable as a limit of infinitely divisible probability laws iffβ ε [0,λ]. In the independent identically distributed case, it is shown that if (x 1 + ... +x n)/a n, an → ∞, converges vaguely toμ with 0<‖μ‖<1, thenμ=‖μδ 0. If furthermore the ratiosa n+1/a n are bounded above and below by positive numbers, thenL(x)=P[|X 1|>x] is a slowly varying function ofx. Conversely, ifL(x) is slowly varying, then for everyβ ε (0, 1) one can choosea n → ∞ so that the limit measure=βδ 0. We show that if 0<ε≦1, 1≦p<2 andx 1, …,x n is a sequence of unit vectors in a normed spaceX such thatE ‖∑ l n εi x l‖≧n 1/p, then one can find a block basisy 1, …,y m ofx 1, …,x n which is (1+ε)-symmetric and has cardinality at leastγn 2/p-1(logn)−1, where γ depends on ε only. Two examples are given which show that this bound is close to being best possible. The first is a sequencex 1, …,x n satisfying the above conditions with no 2-symmetric block basis of cardinality exceeding 2n 2/p-1. This sequence is not linearly independent. The second example is a sequence which satisfies a lowerp-estimate but which has no 2-symmetric block basis of cardinality exceedingCn 2/p-1(logn)4/3, whereC is an absolute constant. This applies when 1≦p≦3/2. Finally, we obtain improvements of the lower bound when the spaceX containing the sequence satisfies certain type-condition. These results extend results of Amir and Milman in [1] and [2]. We include an appendix giving a simple counterexample to a question about norm-attaining operators.  相似文献
