On a class of operators with finiterank self-commutators

This paper studies the class of pure operatorsA on a Hilbert space satisfying dimK _A <, where . The main tool is a pair of matrices and . A reproducing kernel Hilbert space model is introduced for a subclass of this class of operators. Some theorems are established for some subnormal operators as well as hyponormal operators in this class.

On the convergence of powers of interval matrices (2)

Summary Let be a real irreduciblen×n interval matrix. Then a necessary and sufficient condition is given for the sequence of the powers of an interval matrix to converge to a matrix which is not the null matrix. In addition a criterion for is proved to decide whether the limit matrix satisfies the condition of symmetry .     

Homogeneous algebraic varieties defined by Jordan pairs

Every Jordan pair defines an algebraic varietyX containing as a dense open subset.X is projective (affine) if and only if is separable (radical). The Picard group ofX is generated by the irreducible factors of the generic norm of . If is separable then the automorphism group ofX is the projective group of .     

On periodic groups of automorphisms of extremal groups

It is proved that if a periodic group has an extremal normal divisor , determining a complete abelian factor group , then the center of the group contains a complete abelian subgroup , satisfying the relation and intersecting on a finite subgroup. Series-parallel posets and relative Ockham lattices

A study is undertaken of order-reversing maps on series-parallel posets and structural characterisations are obtained of various subclasses of such ordered sets. The results are applied to complete the authors' earlier investigation of classes of finite relate lattices, where is a variety of Ockham lattices and the distributive lattice duals of the algebras in are required to be series-parallel.

Common invariant subspaces for collections of operators

Let be a collection of bounded operators on a Banach spaceX of dimension at least two. We say that is finitely quasinilpotent at a vectorx ₀X whenever for any finite subset of the joint spectral radius of atx ₀ is equal 0. If such collection contains a non-zero compact operator, then and its commutant have a common non-trivial invariant, subspace. If in addition, is a collection of positive operators on a Banach lattice, then has a common non-trivial closed ideal. This result and a recent remarkable theorem of Turovskii imply the following extension of the famous result of de Pagter to semigroups. Let be a multiplicative semigroup of quasinilpotent compact positive operators on a Banach lattice of dimension at least two. Then has a common non-trivial invariant closed ideal.This work was supported by the Research Ministry of Slovenia.     

Topological and bornological characterisations of ideals in von Neumann algebras: I

Suppose is a von Neumann algebra on a Hilbert space and is any ideal in . We determine a topology on , for which the members of that are to norm continuous are exactly those in ; and a bornology on such that the elements of which map the unit ball to an element of , equivalently those members of that are norm to bounded, are exactly those in . This is achieved via analogues of the notions of injectivity and surjectivity in the theory of operator ideals on Banach spaces.     

Geometry of the Sphere of Calibrations of Degree Two

A canonical bijection between the set of extreme points of the comass-unit sphere and the manifold of orthogonal complex structures in is described, under which unitary bases correspond to decompositions of the forms realizing the conjugate norm of the mass. This correspondence is used for obtaining a classification of faces of the sphere and the known classification of faces of the set polar to . Bibliography: 10 titles.     

Isometric representations of some quotients ofH ∞ of an annulus

Let denote an annulus,E a finite subset of with at least three elements, and the ideal of functions in which vanish at the points ofE. The quotient does not have a completely isometric representation on a finite dimensional Hilbert space. This complements a result of [11] which implies that the quotient has an isometric representation on a Hilbert space of dimension twice the cardinality ofE.     

Hankel operators on the weighted Bergman spaces with exponential type weights

Über die Starrheit kompakter komplexer Räume

This article deals with deformations of compact complex spaces, the parameter-space being a general complex space. A compact space X₀ is called absolutely rigid, if every deformation of X₀ is trivial. Ex(X₀, ) is defined as the group of the extensions of by and it is shown that X₀ is absolutely rigid if and only if Ex(X₀, )=0.If X₀ is reduced, there is Ex(X₀, ). The proof makes use of the results of M.A{uprtin} [1] and D{upouady} [2].     

Order comparison of norms of polynomials in regions of the complex plane

For a finite groupG and some prime powerp ⁿ , the -subgroup is defined by . Meixner proved that ifG is a finite solvable group and for somen≧1, then the Fitting length of is bounded by 4n. In the following note it is shown that the 2-length of is at mostn. This result cannot be derived from Meixner’s paper, since his result implies only that the 2-length is bounded by 2n.     

Transvection free groups and invariants of polynomial tensor exterior algebras

Let :GGl(n, ) be a representation of a finite groupG over a field such that the ring of invariants is a polynomial algebra . It is known that in the nonmodular case (i.e., when the order of the group is not divisible by the characteristic of ), the invariants ofG acting on the tensor product of a polynomial and an exterior algebra are given by ,d denoting the exterior derivative. We show that in the modular case, the ring of invariants in is of this form if and only if is a polynomial algebra and all pseudoreflections in (G) are diagonalizable.     

Imprimitive Q-polynomial Association Schemes

It is well known that imprimitive P-polynomial association schemes with are either bipartite or antipodal, i.e., intersection numbers satisfy either for all for all .
